RE: flight simulator for pattern
I'm using AFP, not AFPD. It only has the Smaragd. I like the way the virtual Smaragd flies, but is it realistic? Since I haven't flown a real F3A plane, I couldn't tell how realistic the virtual Smaragd is. Tom

RE: Tank position problem.
If you're committed to an upright installation, because the holes have already been drilled, etc. Another alternative, is to simply heighten the fuselage above the tank somewhat. Once again, not necessarily attractive, but it solves the problem:

RE: Tank position problem.
On a typical upright engine installation, it's a bit of a challenge getting the tank high enough. If it was me, I would just let the tank peek out the top of the fuselage. Not pretty, but functional.

RE: Tank position problem.
This subject came up in a Clarence Mather column once. The reader asked (and I'm paraphrasing), "Why don't kit manufacturers take the proper engine/tank relationship into account?" Clarence's response was something like, "Kit manufacturers know planes; they don't necessarily know engines." Tom

RE: Tank position problem.
I wonder if engines are more tolerant of the tank position with (Tettra/Jett) bubbless tanks. Pylon racing enthusiasts seem to be the only ones using them. I'm guessing it's probably best to line bubbless tanks up with the spray bar. Tom

RE: Tank position problem.
ORIGINAL: Sport_Pilot Actually unless using uniflow the center of the tank should be 1/4'' to 1/2'' below the spraybar. This is for a 60 sized plane and needs to be larger or smaller depending on the size of the engine and tank.
I've never understood that. Don't you want the center of the tank in line with the spray bar, so you get the same fuel mixture when the plane is upright or inverted? Tom

RE: Nitro percentage...
I re-read a "Pattern Patter" column in my September 1999 issue of Radio Control Model World. A fellow by the name of Elliot Balfour is in favor of adequate nitromethane levels. He says, "You can SAVE MONEY by using a fuel with higher % nitro as your engine will keep on running and you will not break your precious airframe in a crash landing." Elliot gave some recommendations: - YS 4-strokes 20%-25% - OS 91 4-stroke 15% - Webra 120 2-stroke 15% - OS 10 2-stroke 25%
