RE: what to get?
I would definately go for a Mojo as well. It is a great plane to learn 3D on. If you are not a builder then I second the OMP Edge ARF.

Just called Great Planes this afternoon and they did not kow what I was talking about with the landing gear. I did email the airsupport address to see if anyone their knew what was going on. I sure hope I can get a set since this has always been the biggest issue with this plane.

RE: Electric REACTOR to GLOW
I would think that there would be no problem if the engine fits in the cowling. make sure to get some clear coat to put on the covering that is compatible wit Monokote. Also make sure to seal all the exposed wood surfaces with thinned epoxy so the glow doesn't destroy the wood.

RE: How safe are clamp style mounts?
My Tower Trainer has one on it and it has been just fine. I have never liked the design but when I got the Tower trainer I didn't have any of the conventional mounts laying around. I have actually gotten to like that mount. I use my trainer for trying out experiments and breaking in new engines and it has been a blessing in disguise. I don't have cowling to worry about so I just toss the engine in there eyeball it straight and call it a day.

RE: NEW FLOAT DESIGN FOR PROFILES
Looks cool! I have thought about doing this to my Chinn Yak. How does it affect the 3D maneuvers? Does it change much between floats on or off? I know most profile guys have a very rearward CG as well. How does this translate to float flying? It looked like theGee Bee in the video had a fairly conservative CG setting and flew mostly in a sport plane style. Do you have any 3D videos?

I don't care what the haters say, I think it is pretty sweet. I dig the looks all around and like that someone decided to step outside of the box. Definitely a cool plane. Sure wish the Air Force paid me enough to have one of those sitting in the garage...... But i digress. If you want I can make a final eval if you send it my way first. [:D]

Any flyers in Montgomery, Alabama?
Hey everyone. Just wondering if there is any regular flyers in the Montgomery, AL area. I am at Maxwell AFB for Air Force Officer Training School and I finally got some weekend privelages. My wife came down last weekend and brought one of my electric profiles so I would like to get together some time while I am here to meet some folks. I am going to head down to a LHS this weekend and see whats up. Sean

RE: sealing control surfaces- why?
I noticed a big difference on one of my 3D planes. I was having a big problem with wing rock when in High alpha flight. I did some reading and figured it couldn't hurt to try hinge sealing. I was already re-hinging the plane at the tme anyway. To my amaziment almost all the bad habits the plane had were gone. There was just enough airflow in the gap to disrupt airflow over the wing. Anyime you disrupt the laminar flow of air over the wing it will kill lift. It really does depend on your model though. I have a pattern style aircraft that I flew forever without the hinges sealed. When I started messing with 3D I went back and resealed everything and it really did not make that much of a difference. It s a GP Reactor BTW. I think it is very aircraft dependent. Some hinge designs do not need it. If I were you I would give it a try sealed and unsealed and see wat you like best. Good Luck!

RE: Pushed my trainer too hard? Wing joiner failure
From what I have read here I would be calling to get a new wing kit. I have a Tower Hobbies MKII Trainer .40 that I have done far worse things too than what you describe. I have used mine for combat, bomb drops, and wide open throttle turns right on the deck. It shows very little signs of wear to this day and it is one of my favorit eplanes to beat up on. I as well only use 8 rubber bands. I use the larger rubber bands that I got from my LHS and have never had a single issue with rubber bands breaking or the wing shifting. There was definitely a manufactuer defect in your kit somewhere.

I have never been impressed wth the Evo engines to be honest. Alot of people swear by them but I will take a 55AX any day over the Evo. For the Reactor I would stick a Saito .82 init if you can swing the cost if not go with a 55AX. I would make sure you were not running to lean too. NO engine will tolerate that for long.

I've been in this hobby for 14 years and I still smile when I am out flying. I miss it right now. I haven't flown in about 3 weeks and i wont be flying till close to the end of the year. The Air Force has me in training for officer status so no flying for awhile. Congrats on your accomplishment. This is a very fulfilling hobby that has been a really great addition to my life. I am even getting my two year old son into it! He plays Realflight every day right now. For him the best part is he doesen't have to share it with Dad! Congrats and happy flying!!!!

RE: How do I do rolls in a circle?
There is no wrong way to do a aileron roll. the aileron rol you describe though is basically a paprabolic arc. To amek an aileron look really cool you will not use any up elevator initially. As you start your roll use some left rudder at the 90 degree point, down elevator at 180 degree point, right rudder at 270 degree point, then back to upright position. This will be a true aileron roll with no change in altitude. Looks pretty cool but will take some practice. I will let someone else handle the rolling circle. I am still working on that one. [:D]

RE: Crosswind landings
Not much I can add to gboulton's post. I have always looked at a crosswind landing, full scale and RC, as kind of a balancing act. There is a balance that has to be found between the aircraft's intended course and where the air mass is trying to push it. As gboulton noted, airplanes do not care where the wind direction is. It is up to the pilot to correct the path of the aircraft to the intended target. When I first learned to fly RC no one took the time to expalin the mechanics of cross wind landings to me. All I got was, "Use some rudder, you will be fine." It wasn't till I got my full scale ratings that I really understood what was going on. Every pilot has there own way of flying the cross wind approach. Some like to crab or slip alnost all the way down to the runway, only swinging the nose around at the last minute. Some like to use the rudder to point the nose at the runway and dip a wing in to the wind to hold the ground track. I have always used a combination of both. For me this applies to how i fly full scale and RC cross wind landings. The Plane will want to weather vane into the wind. Basically the cross wind will push the nose into the wind if you let it. By using a combination of rudder and aileron you can balance the crab and the plane will not fight you much. I have found this is the easiest way to make your initial apporach. It takes some practice to figure out the proper wind drift angle but once you find it the plane will hold a fairly constant track across the ground. Once I cross the runway numbers, or end of the field, I transistion the nose of the plane to line up with the runway. Using some aileron I dip a wing into the wind to counter act the force of the wind trying tp push me off course. You are essentially cross controling the plane at this point which will require a little more airspeed to counteract drag. Once you are in the landing flare the key thing is to keep the upwind wing down into the wind. Depending on the severity of the cross wind this may require landing on one main gear tire then the other. Keep holding the aileron input into the wind and it wil keep the wing from raising and flipping over. I second the idea of going to get a quick flight by a full scale instructor. All of this will make alot more sense when you can see it firsthand from the cockpit.

RE: Great Planes Reactor GP/EP 3D ARF .46-.70
Roger, Glad you could join us! Yeah the Reactor covering has been an issue from day one. I have taken very good care of mine and it has well over 100 flights on it. It has been a constant battle to keep the covering looking nice. Really it has been the tail feathers causing most of the problems. I have used little spots of CA to tack the corners back down. the wings still look as good as the day I bought them. I think it has mostly to do with how much engine goo gets on the covering. The tail gets blasted all the time and it seems to have the most prolems.

RE: Engine for 3D: 4stroke or 2stroke
Ameyam, Ther is no an issue with running the 55AX inverted. The biggest issue is tank placement. If the tank is to high in realtion to the carburator it will cause fuel to run down into the carb when it does not need to. I have run a 55AX inverted several times in different planes and it is only a matter of taking the time to tune it properly. As for the 4-strokes yes they do have more torques and most of your ideas are correct. The valve adjustment is very easy to do. The info can be found all over the internet on how to accomplish this. Most of the time you will only need to check the clearance. I have a old OS 91 4S that has never needed a valve adjustment in all thes years of flying. I just check it once a year or so to make sure it is holding its settings. As for props, the ability of the 4S to swing larger more efficient props is where they make up for their RPM disadvantage. They provide better throttle response on a more efficient prop whihc in turn creates amazing performance. I would probably use only 4S for 3D planes but the cost is just to much for me most of the time. $150 for a 55AX or $300 for a Saito 82. Not to hard of a choice for me.
ORIGINAL: ro347 If using aileron and elevator to turn....add a smidge of rudder to hold the nose up through the turn.
The rudder will be used to cancel out adverse yaw so you will need it to lower the nose. Mostly in a right turn. The nose will want to move in the opposite direction of the tunr due the drag of the raised wing.

RE: Beginner??? Probably!
Glad to see your plane appeared on your deck Paul. I admire your determination. I think one advatage you have in this endeavor is patience, and I think that comes with age (not an old joke). I started flying when I was 13 back in the mid 90's and there is no way I would have had the patience to go it alone with no instructor. Youth does not bring patience and great problem solving skills, age does. Many people crash once and give up. Whether that has to do with age, personality, government conspiracy to hold the modeler down, I have no idea. This has been a thouroughly enjoyable thread to follow. Hopefully you can get the plane back together and get it back up in the air. If not I second the vote for the SPADFlyer trainer. I have flown one of those models and it is a great flying plane. Plus coro is so hard to destroy. Good luck Paul!!

RE: I got my plane into a spin and never came out
Sounds like a classic cross control stall to me. When I was getting my full scale Flight instructor certificate I had to be able to demonstrate a cross control stall . It almost always happen on the base to final leg. Low altitude, low airspeed and in a turn. All recipes for disasters. To much control surface hangin out in the breeze causeing drag. Add that to a low power to weight ratio and disaster ensues. THe first time I did one in a Cessna it was pretty scary and I did it at 6,000 feet! I with Combatpig on this one. I have had so much fun flying my Chinn Yak profile. I have vastly improved my 3D ability and reaction times because of this plane. It really is not to hard to fly either. Tame down the control throws and use a conservative CG it will glide in like a trainer. If you can fly a foamie you can fly a larger profile. Plus with the higher power ratio you always have enough power to get out of trouble.

RE: Control issue
All plane lose altitude during a turn. When you bank the wings the planes loses some of its vertical lift. To correct for this you have to use some up elevator to keep the plane level during the turn. Try making very shallow turns and experiment with how much elevator you have to use to keep the airplane at the same alititude throughout the turn. Hope this helps!
