RE: Reliability issue of the YS170DZ CDI Spark plug cap
Hi Amram, Just to let you know that the Hyde LR85 mount now includes internal limiters, which prevent model damage due to excessive engine displacement in the event of backfire, running out of fuel or even opening the throttle very quickly. To my knowledge the YS mount has no limiters save the max displacement offered by the damper. Additionally make suree you leave a few mm gap between nose and spinner as when you apply an electric starter to an engine with the YS mount, the engine moves backwards as the rubber in the mount flexes; you can end up scraping the spinner on the model if it is installed to close. Best wishes Keith

Axiome C of G
Hi, On the Oxai website the C of G is listed as 190mm; is this from the LE of the wing and I assume this is when the wing, canaliser is fitted? Can anyone else with an Axiome corroborate this figure? Thanks Keith

RE: YS170 CDI
Hi Amran, I ran CDi in my Proline earlier in the year and eventually settled on a 1250 mAh 2S FP Lipo, which was sufficient for three flights, lasting about 12-14 min flying PO9 using 25% nitro / 10% KL198 oil. This powered both Futaba 2.4 GHz 608 Rx / 2 of 9150 / 2 of 9151 / 1 of 9650 servos AND CDi unit with about 350 mAh to spare. Voltage reduced down to ~7.7V. I think weight on that installation was ~140g. Never had a radio problem and this was ground tested power on intially. My new Axiome is closer to the limit and for one competition flight only, I will use a 2S 800 mAh Lipo to run both CDi and R/C. So I'll be carrying round about four of these per competition. The pack weighs 44g and goes through the standard Digi switch as a regulator. I have a small ferrite ring close to the receiver though I've never tried removing this. For practice flying I'll stick with the 1250 mAh packs. Just weighed the ignition unit, mounting, switch and extension lead to Rx and comes to 125g Best wishes Keith

RE: YS 170CDI mount
If you are using the YS mount, be sure to leave sufficient gap 2 - 3 mm to allow the engine to move backwards when applying your starter. Otherwise the spinner will contact the nosie ring of the model when pressing the starter. Keith

RE: YS 170CDI mount
There are some new Hyde mounts on the market that have been specifically specificalyl developed using the CDi engine and incorporate internal limters to prevent airframe strike. I think they are now available on the Central Hobbies site. Keith

RE: Extreme Composite Proline
I was using differential till recently but have taken it off now and it rolls better than ever, especially on the upline. I'm pretty sure the pulling to the canopy thing is just the wrong amount of downthrust but there's no way of adding this without it looking very odd at the front. What Cof G are you guys using? Hey Niall, are you in the Triple Crown this weekend? Keith

RE: Extreme Composite Proline
Hi Nikos, Yeah I think all the EC Prolines exhibit large vibration near the tailgroup. Its a resonant mode of the structure and there's very little you can do about this via the mount. Only stiffening would help as you mentioned but that means adding weight and you might exacerbate it if you add the weight near the point of max movement. That said most airplanes have these issues in one form or another; when the tail falls off I'll be worried. I didn't fly the Proline in Romilly as I didn't have it flying the way I wanted. I was experimenting with wing incidence to stop it pulling to the nose in vertical climbs but this made the rest of the flying poor. So its back now to normal incidence and suddenly its going very well indeed, much better than my Angels Shadow. It still wanders on power off pullouts like at the bottom of the 1/2 rev Cuban8 or stall turns and I have to be very careful to hold its heading the way I want it to go. Rolls though are exceptional and I hope it will have a bright future. BTW I'm back on a DZ170 for the PL turning 7500 on Optifuel 30% heli and APC 19 x 11. Bets wishes Keith

RE: Extreme Composite Proline
Hi Tianci, thanks for the advice I'll call him today. Nickolas, I had some problems with the fuel pump on my CDi engine casuing a big back fire which mashed the underpan at the front. It went back together but it looks a bit of a mess. Then finally as I was really getting on with the Proline yesterday, the sun decided top get particularly strong and melt the canaopy! By the way I take back what I said about the 19 x 11 prop; I'm now using the new Hyde LR85 mount and this suits the Proline, DZ170 / 170 CDi using this prop very well, in fact really really well. How's your's getting on? Keith

RE: YS-170CDI Flight Report
Hi Arch, I've been doing some work for Merle on his limiting mounts and can certainly agree with you that the new LR85 mount is a really excellent product which combines very soft mounting to give great isolation, and movement limiters to prevent excessive motion at idle. I also think the square Alloy beams are a great improvement. In fact the postion of the limiters are set so that at normal low speed idle they don't have any effect. However when the idle goes very low just before cutting the limiters then work to prevent large movements which may cause the engine to strike the airframe and cause damage. I wish I'd had this mount several years ago as the cowl on my Shadow would still be unmarked! The other ways the limiters help is when you get large movement of the engine during very fast throttle opening or most commonly if you get the needle valve setting wrong or run out of fuel in the air and the engine kicks. Finally with the CDi engine using the 19 x11 prop, the LR85 mounts gives excellent attenuation up to full power providing up to 90% reduction in vibration at and above 6500rpm. Best wishes Keith

RE: Fliton Element 170
Not sure; it depends how you build it up. But for the model in question, the bare model weighed 2485g and built up to 4930g, with a CDi engine and digital servos. So with a DZ170 instead you can subtract 100 g straight away but beyond that it depends on your hardware UKpatternflyer

RE: Fliton Element 170
Hi, That total weight is lighter than the finish airframe weight of a high end F3A model, which are typically 2450g. They build up to around 4800g when fully installed so you shouldn't have any issues. UKPatternflyer

RE: YS-170CDI Flight Report
Hi Atul, First run of the day open the throttle and crank the engine 180 degrees backwards and forwards to actuate the pump so that fuel is drawn to the injector pipe; you can see the fuel progressing through it. If after a while it hasn't reached there, there may be some congealed fuel slowing things down a bit in the system (especially on cold days), or if you've got a long tank feed, it might just take a while to get there. Either way pull the fuel feed from the tank to the pump, and ensure fuel can dribble out of it. That way you know you've got fuel to the pump ok. Reattach the pipe and repeat the cranking thing with the throttle wide open. Needless to say, only do this if you are certain the ignition unit is off with the CDi. If you still can't see fuel moving to the injector then you've either got a blockage or the needle is shut. Once fuel reaches the injector, crank the engine by hand a couple of turns to let the fuel lubricate the engine. After that you are good to go with either CDi or DZ. Don't forget to shut the throttle down to idle before starting; Boy when you forget this once, you'll never forget again. This is ok for the first run of the day; after that you shouldn't need to do it. JFYI, today: Angels Shadow DZ / 18 x 11WPN 7700- 7900 rpm; 30/20 Optifuel; Proline CDi 18.1 x 11 7800rpm; 25/10 Optifuel Hope this helps Keith

RE: YS-170CDI Flight Report
Hi Carston, Thats a great reply and sums up what I feel about the requirements to filter correctly. I guess one question is what level of RF can the receiver tolerate, which is quite a big piece of work. Perhaps its just best to admit defeat; I've gone to a 400 mAh Lipo, which should be good for five flights Bets wishes Keith

RE: YS-170CDI Flight Report
He asked me to do some measurements "just to be safe". I measured the voltage rail on the receiver with a digital storage scope (100 MHz BW), and saw spikes of +/- 20 Volts or more on the supply rail of the receiver!
Hi Carston, have you tried an in-line ferrite ring, as per Shanes' suggestion? Thats exactly the kind of thing an inductor would help with.
Keith, Do you use a Switch between the Receiver (9 channel) and the Ignition. I am presuming so. Will a normal JR switch do? And how about a 6V regulator: is that too much voltage for the ignition? i.e. should one definitely use 5.7V or some regulator lower than 6V? I would hate to mess up the Ignition! atul
Hi Atul, Here's the circuit I've tried on 35MHz 149 PCM receiver. The regulator takes the voltage down to 5.5V into the receiver and the Emcotec switch regulates to 5.5V also. It worked ok on the ground and for most part in the air. However the model seemed to experience momentary freezing of the ailerons in flight; i.e. when I rolled, it would appear to roll a bit further than I'd input. I've experienced this before with a stick pot fault on my 14MZ tx, so I tried a second Tx but with the same issue. My guess is that the Ignition unit is doing something to the receiver function. So I can't really recommend this approach any more. I've now gone 2.4 GHz and will adopt Shanes' approach (see post and see how it goes. Does anyone know if YS recommend a particular method for this Keith

RE: YS-170CDI Flight Report
Hi Atul, The Ignition unit draws 0.32A at 7800 rpm. For a 10 minute flight at full power this means you'll use around 50 mAh, but obviously you'll never fly at full power for that length of time. The battery size will then depend on your setup and tank size. Bets wishes Keith

Braking
Hi, Does anyone have good experience of braking effect with the Plett Evo 30-10 / Jeti Spin 99 ESC. I have these in my C-ARF Integral and when it comes to the figure 9, 2 half rolls oppsite, manoeuvre in PO9, the model just accelerates incredibly on the down line making it look really rushed. RE: YS 160 Piston Damage
Thanks for your input guys, I really appreciate it. The person who bought it has never run DZ's before and I suppose he could have started / run it lean based on how he used to fly his 120AC's. However I was suprised to see all the wear at the bottom of the piston and maybe thats down to the very dusty conditions in Argentina when we flew there. So I expect I'll have to compromise and go halves on the repair bill. Thanks once again Keith

RE: YS 160 Piston Damage
David / Eggert, Thanks for your replies. I myself have never seen this kind of damage on a DZ and I've been running them since the Dingo appeared in 2002. So from what you say the mechanical damage appears to be the result of hydraulic locking or very significant backfire. I cannot say what has happened to the engine since I saw it six months ago, but the guy who bought it reckons it was like that when he tried it for the first time recently. Its hard to imagine the engine running normally in this condition. My problem is that I sold it to him in good faith, it having not run after November last year at the W/C in Argentina. I had many practise flights there in front of team members from Norway, Sweden, Ecuador, Brazil and Ireland and no one commented on it running badly, and I thought it was running well at the time; it had to due to the winds there. YS 160 Piston Damage
Does anyone have any idea what might cause this level of damage to a piston in normal use? Its from a DZ160 engine I sold to a chap 6 months ago and he's just sent me this picture claiming that its been like this since I sold it him. Yet the engine ran fine last time I used in in Argentina 2007; it had to 'cos of the howling winds there. I can't believe the engine would have run if the piston was like this. Keith

RE: 170 DZ quitting in two loops manoeuvre PO9
Hi, Thanks for the reply mjfrederick. I did look at the one way valve but its pretty tight so decided just to leave it for the moment. Just to update you; the engine started varying between flying days being very rich in level flight and then going lean in the high G verticals and even the Triangle loop up leg. After exhausting all the other options I canibalized my second, un-run DZ170 and swapped pumps. Bingo; it works fine now, as anyone who witnessed the home International in the UK recently can testify. So the problems in the pump but god know what it is. It even went normal to rich when going rolling into inverted with the bad pump; how wierd is that! All I can say is that it definitely wasn't the tank setup or anything outside the engine. Keith
