RE: What is the cheap and best A123 charger & A123 balancer?
I am very happy with my Imax B-6. ( https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5548 ) It's only a 50W charger so it may be a bit slow for those wanting 10C charges but, I'm using my A123's in 2S form as reciever packs with a standard JR connector for the Rx and the balance lead so I only charge my 1100 VPX's at 2.5A for fear the connector

RE: H9 Twist Engine?
These are my engine experiences on the 40 size Twist. Evolution 46, with a Tower Muffler and an APC 11.5-4 prop. Slow unlimited vertical. Easy to use. Cheap. Messy. The engine ran fine but seeped fuel from the front seal. O.S. 50SX ringed, with a Mac's black pipe and an APC 12.25-3.75 prop. Super unlimited vertical. Not as cheap. Now discontinued engine but they're still out there on some shops shelves. Pretty clean with an exhaust deflector on it. My choice for 2 stroke power. Note: the 50SX is an engine that requires a proper break in. As with any ringed engine, do NOT just put it on and fly it rich. I broke mine in on a stand for 3/4 gallon of fuel, alternating the needle from rich to lean and it has performed so good that it is the last 2 stroke glow engine I own and I'm gonna keep it until I can't get parts for it anymore. A friend got one after seeing mine and just put it in the air running rich and it never performed as nicely as mine did. My 50SX is currently on a Tango 40 and I'll be flying it again in a couple of hours.[:D] Saito FA72/82, APC 14-4W prop. Super unlimited vertical. Not cheap. Outstanding mid throttle torque. Clean. I've flown the 72 and the 82 in Twist 40's and they're so close I can't really tell any difference between them on this plane. I did switch to a Master Airscrew 13-6 K series prop for the Twist. I found that the APC didn't throw as much air of the tail in hovering/harrier moves as the plane needed. The 13-6 solved this with no loss in vertical performance. I've had 3 of these planes. All of them met a loud and grotesque, but fun, death. In my book, the Saito is the way to go on this plane. This plane is not the 3D wonder that everybody thought it would be BUT, it IS one of the best, general purpose fun fly planes ever. I'll be getting another Twist 40 soon...

RE: O.S. FSa-81 engine
ORIGINAL: mart o I was just wondering if anyone has any experience of this recently released engine. I was going to get the Saito 82 to put in a Funtana X50 & then I saw the OS so haven't decided yet. It's quit a bit more money than the Saito so what do you get extra for your money other than the OS name? Specs are: weight - 556g 19.63oz Power - 1.3ps / 1100 rpm (What is ps?) Practical rpm range - 2,200 to 12,000
You get an extra 2.03 ounces of weight and a really cool blue valve cover! My experiences with the old O.S. FS 70 S2 has been very positive and I'm sure the FSa 81 will be a great engine as well but, in my experience, the Saito FA 72/82 are every bit as good, if not better, than the O.S.. I say, save your money, save the weight, get the Saito. If you really really want to, you can paint the Saito valve covers blue too![:D]

RE: Looking for a flight simulator
I, too, am looking for a flight sim that's fairly inexpensive. One of my friends suggested that I just get E-sky's flight sim. He said that it's only $19.99 right now on sale. I couldn't really find anything regarding their software other than the pictures on the ad. You'd think they'd have some kind of little video clip or something so you could see how it looks. In the box you get a basic 4 ch controller with USB interface and the software. From what I've read you can download a whole slew of planes off the internet. I tried to do a search to try and find more info on this sim but am coming up empty handed. Sure, I would like to get a much nicer sim but for my budget I think this might be the way to go. Has anyone ever used this sim?

RE: Off Topic: Heroes - Something to Think About
ORIGINAL: strega7 Can you remember the movie, happened in Vietnam (I think). In the last scene there are soldiers/pilots trapped by vietnamese forces. The airsupport in form of Sandy-birds wanted to break through, because the rescue helicopter is in stand by. No chance to find out were the enemy is. So one soldier went away and attracked the attention of the enemy forces on his person. Finally the Skyraiders had the aim they wanted .... I will never forget the scene, the lonely man at the tank and the Hobo´s attacking the enemy around him .... I think he was a hero, he saved the life of his comerades. Great movie, tears in my eyes. I don´t know wether its a fairytale or a real thing happened in Vietnam.
That movie was titled "Flight of the Intruder". ( http://imdb.com/title/tt0099587/ ) A pretty good movie. Beautifully photographed flight sequences, especially the Sandy's in the scene you described. If you haven't seen it, watch it and enjoy it, THEN go read the book! ( http://www.coonts.com/Books/flight_of_the_intruder.htm ) Remember to read it AFTER you watch the movie. The screenwriters took a few, ummmm "liberties" with the story and I'm not going to ruin it for you. I'm not saying the movie was junk or anything but the book is absolutely fantastic! While the story is fiction, the author, Stephen Coonts, was an A-6 Intruder pilot during the Vietnam War. There is a picture in his online photo gallery of him standing in front of an A-6 on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Enterprise in 1971 and that aircraft, presumably his, was number 505, the same as the lead character in both the movie and the book.

DX-7 Signal Shading Question...
Danny, I'm installing a DX-7/AR-7000 system in a 90 size Seagull Yak and I have a concern about signal shading on the antennae. The wing tube is aluminum and the primary Rx whiskers will be parallel to it approximately 3 inches behind, and about 1/2 inch below the centerline of it. One of the primary Rx whiskers will also be about 1 inch forward of the rudder servo. The secondary Rx will have it's whiskers oriented vertically ( up and down) on the side of the fuselage with one of the whiskers about 1/2 inch of the throttle servo and wire. With this setup, how concerned about signal shading should I be? If it's not good to be that close, how far away should I keep the Rx's from the "shade"? I've seen too many of the Spektrum units in action and I do have confidence in it but, I feel I need to ask for my own peace of mind. Thanks!

RE: New H9 Cub??
I think I understand, you're worried about up inside the fuselage, the bracket the struts attach to? I don't have an amswer for you on that. I keep my flying Cub in one piece and the ARF is in storage. I figured on having to drill a hole in the bracket to get the landing gear bolt in place and seated. On the outside, there is no interferance between the strut bolts and the gear.

RE: New H9 Cub??
OOOOPS! Sorry Bill, I almost missed the other question, the wing strut tiedown bolts will not be a problem. They're out of the way of the gear unless it gets expanded well past the 90 degree point at which time we won't be too worried about it because we have just severely injured the plane(Splat!). RE: New H9 Cub??
Bill PTC I never got around to installing my Robarts! I've been having too much fun with this thing,,,, STILL! I did mount my Saito 72 on it and am just having a blast with it. I have even aquired an ARF version of this plane for the day that I do something dumb to this one. I have mocked up the Robarts on the fuselage and it will fit without adding a plywood plate. The mounting brackets reasonably line up with the factory landing gear rails. Now for the bad-ish news... The plane's rails are grooved for the wire gear and that doesn't give you enough of a flat spot gor the Robart brackets to mount to. Earlier in this thread Dafid posted a picture of a solution that will definately work using some thin metal as a "flat spot" for the brackets to seat on. It could also be done out of light ply or possibly even wood filler. We just need to get rid of the groove and it'll be fine. Gang, I can't tell you how much fun this little plane has been! It won't 3D, it doesn't really like to be upside down, it rolls way too slow but, it is a ton of fun. I can't really explain it! I went to a fly in in Kentucky a while back and actually won the "Best Scale" plaque with it! A PNP ARF! At that same fly in, I took 2nd in the limbo contest with it at the 2 foot level when I snagged the streamer with the tail! Not much lower and it would've been a touch and go! What a blast! RE: Spektrum DX-7
In the "General Information" section, on page 102 in my manual, is written that we shouldn't fly with a Tx voltage lower than 9.0V and the Rx should be no lower than 4.7V. That being said, this entire section of the manual looks like it was "borrowed" out of a 72 Mhz set up. They are giving contradictory info on range checks, frequency procedure which are all quite correct for a 72 Mhz transmitter. This low voltage thing concerns me. Not overly so that I'm afraid of it. I don't ever let the voltage get below 4.7 before a flight. Quick charging doesn't take so long as to risk an airplane. I have adopted 6V Rx packs and do not intend to fly the 7000 without one. What does concern me is low voltage drops during some hard manuvers. Would 5 DS 821's and an old Futaba S3001 potentially cause a drop to the reboot point using a Hydrimax 6V 1650 Mah NiMh battery? Am I possibly being paranoid? Probably...

RE: Spektrum DX-7
I've got a question.... I'm new to Spektrum/JR programming as a long time Futaba 9C user. I'm setting up my Yak an the dual elevators are giving me fits. I've got the leads plugged into the elevator port and aux2. They're on mix 6 with constant "on". They're set to 100% in both directions. I'm not getting as much "up" from the aux2 side while the "down" stick position give a pretty much equal stroke. To make them equal out I'd have to give it like 180% ifit were possible. I've checked the dual rates and end points and everything looks good. It'd bound to be something I missed in the learning curve.... [X(] ****Edit due to brain fade:**** (Smacking my head with the palm of my hand) Never mind gang... I found the answer at Bob's site. I hadn't inhibited all that stuff that Mike McConville said to do for Elev to Elev mix and it now works like a champ!! Bob saves the day and wasn't even logged on! Thanks for the info collection you do Bob.

RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
I have not used the Futaba MSA-10 or the JR Matchbox (both are fully capable "synch boxes") I have, however seen them used and have never seen anyone have a problem with them. Those reversing Y harnesses are a whole 'nother bag of burning dog doo.... I don't like 'em or trust 'em, and I only know one person who likes them and his elevator servos still don't match at full throw. I, personally, would advise against the Y harness option. I agree with mtwister. Programmer, transmitter or synchro box. The last would be your cheapest out. I think the 3010's will be fine and you're on the right track.[;)]

RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
I usually do the ailerons on 1 and 6 as well. I do the elevators on 2 and 7. I have also done a mix on 2 and 5 before for a 6 channel Rx. That is what makes my Futaba 9C a joy. It's "user friendly"[:D]

RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
I usually adjust the endpoints on each elevator servo in the transmitter so that they are even at center and max throw both up and down. This is assuming that you have a computer Tx and are plugging each servo into a separate channel, not using a Y harness. I just got my Extra 330 this past weekend and haven't started on it yet BUT,,, man-o-man, this thing is light!! Unless it has some weird flying traits, I'm gonna love it!

RE: Great Planes Reactor GP/EP 3D ARF .46-.70
The Magnum 70 weighs in right at 21oz. and the Saito 82 weighs in at 17.6oz. (Both weights with mufflers.). For an all out lightweight 3D'ing 4 stroker, the 82 is king but, the Magnum is no slouch in the power department, turning an APC 14-4W at 10K RPM's on 15% Cool Power. It's just a little heavier and a whole lot cheaper.... It's a good value and all 3 of my 70's run great but,,,, so do my Saito's... [:D]

RE: Great Planes Ryan STA question
The plane won't notice the nose weight. One thing though, the landing gear is very close to the fuselage centerline and you have to par close attention to taxi-ing while using ailerons in a crosswind. I've seen a lot or the STA/STA-M's drag a wingtip due to strong crosswinds or turning too fast while taxiing. The only damage I've seen from this was some covering scrapes from concrete. It's no big deal on grass though. Let me know how the maiden flight goes!!

RE: Great Planes Ryan STA question
No I don't. The only reasons I can think of for them to discontinue it are slow sales and / or being an older design. The giant Spacewalker was also discontinued. More recently, their 60 size Tiger Moth got the axe. I hate to see any of the above planes become discontinued. The STA, Spacewalker and the Tiger Moth are all timeless to me. The STA especially. The look of that plane is why I got into RC and, to be honest, I'm a little scared to assemble and fly mine for fear of tearing it up!

RE: Great Planes Ryan STA question
Jon, I have this plane new in the box and haven't flown an STA with the O.S. 91 FS, so, I can't actually comment on your question. That being said, the assembly manual says on page 3 in the engine selection section, that they flew the prototype with an O.S. 91 FS. I have flown a friends STA with an O.S. 120 and I would call it "sporty overpowered". Meaning it had more power than the airframe needed. A Great Planes giant Spacewalker (similar configuration, weight and size) with a 91 FS flies easily in a very scale manner. If you are expecting to fly this plane "on the wing", like a full scale plane, the 91 FS will do nicely. If you are expecting to fly it with pure power, the 91 FS isn't the engine you need. In this case I'd suggest a 120 class engine from O.S., Saito or YS. To throw another engine into the mix for you to think about, look at the Evolution / MVVS 26cc gasser. Plenty of power and it'll fit nicely. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EVOE26GT2 Good luck, the civilian STA is a beautiful looking and great flying plane. You're gonna love it!
