RE: AMA Today - FAA reps address members
I am curious as to whether any industry types have had any input to the AMA regarding this? You know...Tower...Horizon....etc? I wonder what their take is on this?

RE: Using a closed road for an airfield
Just get a couple of friends and fly there. You want a Club?...then join that one you mentioned.15 miles away. Just go fly and enjoy. Until or unless someone tells you not to. Better to ask for forgiveness.....than to ask for permission. You got a diamond in the rough. Enjoy!

RE: best way to train new pilots
I agree with most of the posts. I think the biggest problem I see is lack of understanding of basic aerodynamics. Most newbies have no idea what pitch, roll, or yaw is. Also the lack of a plan. Once a new pilot has soloed...he is pretty much left alone. They come to the field with no plan...other than to fly. They never practice landings..they have no GOALS. How many times have you seen a take off with no rudder input. The plane heads to the left and if they have enough speed....they rotate and fly into the middle of the pattern. Saw a mid air like that once.

I have one gas plane...yet to fly. I have been looking at the "sticky" . To set it up correctly. Thanks for your reply.

RE: Emergency Engine Kill... Choke Servo or Opto-Ignition Kill from Transmitter
As part of my ongoing "gasser" education....I assume a throttle stop prevents closing the throttle beyond where the stop screw is adjusted. So if you remove the screw...the carb can be totally closed with the stick...then further closed with the trim on the TX. Have I got that right? 7. Remove and toss the "stop screw" on the throttle arm plate, then unhook the little spring that pulls the butterfly closed, unless you want your throttle servo under constant load/tension. Do NOT REMOVE THE SPRING.

RE: Reno crash
Thanks... rjbob, for the link to the "Ghost" pictures. I was astounded at how many systems there are, crammed into the modern Reno Warbird racer. Seems like every inch has something in it. I knew they clipped wings and such. But I thought the fuse was pretty much stripped and a Hot Rod motor installed....and that was it. That cockpit looks tiny. And the photo that shows the pilot...seemingly absent...really lends credence to the theory that he was unconscious. He must have had a lot of slack in the shoulder belts. Or do they use some kind of retract system on the harness?

RE: Reno crash
I thought I heard someone remark that maybe his seat broke. Is that possible? That MSNBC video...looks to me like he was completing his turn and the plane just rolls over on its back and dives into the ground. From that angle, I can't see the violent pitch up everyone talks about.

RE: Not one single kit!
No offense Jess....but we both enjoy flying RC...you fly a kit built....and I fly an ARF. How is it that we don't have anything in common? I am sure you would tell me all about your "kit built" if I asked. I would probably give you an "attaboy" and wax poetic about how nice it looked and what cool building skills you have. Maybe ask you for some tips. I built a kit back in 07 after getting into the hobby in 03. Check my profile and you will see a couple of pics of my .40 size Stingray (crashed on maiden)...and the yellow WTF which was an amalgam of, tail feathers from a CAP (mid air) and a wing set, cowl, LG from a .40 size Sukhoi ARF (another friend crashed it)...and a scratch built fuse, which a friend helped me with. So, I have"built". It's just that I have not done so in a long time. Not sure if I will or won't again. I was at the field the other day flying my Easy Sports which use the original wings...but we built a pair of fuse's after I dumb thumbed the ARF. And a friend crashed his and gave me his lightly damaged wing set. So now I have two. Anyway, I was talking to one of the guy's...who was a prolific "builder"...but at his age...his eyesight is going....so he no longer builds. He brought an ARF trainer to the field to fly. Would you not have anything in common with him? If you did not know him and saw him flying an ARF...would you think there was nothing in common with you? Look...I have nothing but high praise for people who "build"...especially scratch builders. What I don't like is the attitude that SOME builders have towards people who buy ARF's. And blame them for the demise of kits....and the demise of this country, in general. IF in fact the "building" community laments the fact that the youngsters are not building....perhaps a mentor program could be set up where they fly. Take a youngster (or oldster) who might be interested and help him build a kit. Kind of a Master-Apprentice thing....if you will. This would be a way of passing building skills to the younger ones. All for now...going to go down and prep my ARF's for tomorrow's flying. Regards, Chris

RE: Not one single kit!
ORIGINAL: Mastertech To those who blast those of us that no longer build kits, just what gives you the moral high ground to look down your nose at us? Just because you choose to build a kit or scratch build doesn't mean everyone has to. Some guys just don't have the required skills to do so. In fact most Arf's out there today are far better built than most builders can build. You want to build from a kit, fine have a grand time. Please refrain from bashing those that do not, you do not know whether we have the time or space to build or not so don't assume for an instant we're less of a modeler than you are. Tim
My sentiments exactly!

RE: question-more weight or engine downthrust
Been lurking...and I am impressed how you folks have come to the aid of Dave. My hat's are off to you all. Maybe it's me....but I don't like the looks of the rudder cable , how they are crimped. One side looks slack...and has some kind of weird "thing" being used as a crimp. I always run the cable back through the crimp and leave just a tad of loop....showing. Gives more surface area for the crimp. What say Y'all????

Paralell Packs
After a 2.5 yr hiatus from flying..i am getting back into it. As soon as I get my thumb and finger back on my .40-.60 size planes....I am gonna fly my 25% SIG Sukhoi. It's going to need batteries, so I thought I would switch over to A123. TX is a DX7. RX is an AR 7000. It has an Opti kill on it. I read Red's article on parallel packs. I get the concept. With the A123 is a parallel pack really necessary? Also...if I were to go that route...I run out of RX channels. I think I have the elevators already Y'd. So can I Y the two outputs from the charge switches into one RX port? Or...get an 8 channel RX? Any thought? Thanks

RE: ARF's are Kits?
Do I call it building? NO. I call it assembling, since that is what it is. Do I want to build? NO. Do I care if others want to build? NO "Do what you want" Do I insult people that build? NO "why would I". Are people in this thread insulting people with ARFS? YES Why do you suppose that is? "I have no idea"
Well Said... rcairflr....I have "BUILT" two kits....and "ASSEMBLED" six ARF's. I have been fortunate to hook up with two guy's who have built kits and have shown me what to look for when I have rebuilt several crashed ARF's....or modify NIB ARF's. They have transferred "their" pride in building....to me...when I "ASSEMBLE" an ARF.

RE: What's it all mean??
aeajr...I find it interesting that you characterize it as a Hunters game. I never thought about it in that way. But it does make sense. Mankind is descended from hunter/gatherer's. Today we only hunt for sport/meat. Some for pure sport. So taking that part of the brain that is programmed and putting it to work to hunt for thermals.......seems natural. Maybe profound. Maybe THAT was what I experienced on my first flight, but was unable to put it into words.
