RE: AR7000 LED flasing slowly
http://www.spektrumrc.com/Articles/Article.aspx?ArticleID=1756 What you are doing is bench testing the QC feature... "Here come the second issue. If while the led is flashing slowly I turn the transmitter and I push the back green button I'm losing the bind. Then I need to go through the binding process again with the terminator. This behavior is systematic as I can repeat it as much as I want. " I think what you are doing is asking the TX to generate another GUID...and so it does, and of course the rx does not recognize it. Holding down the bind button while turning on the TX WITHOUT the bind plug installed in the RX is not a normal procedure. I suggest you call Horizon for a complete explaination. Good Luck!!

RE: Rib stitching
If you don't have a helper, a friend told me that on full scale airplanes he straps a mirror to his knee, hangs the surface to be stiched over the edge of a table, sits over the surface with a bright overhead light and stitches away...the puncture points are pre marked, and spaced according to FAA guidelines of course...! RE: Nelson Hobbies Covering & Paint
I have used the Nelson's lite-fab natural color on several airplanes, with excellent results. I also used the paints, with excellent results also. The paint is not like most paints, so there is a learning curve, but a little practice and you should have great results. I hand brushed and also airbrushed the paint. It drys pretty fast, so between coats it is best to immerse the airbrush hand piece in water so it doesn't clog. WarBirdColors paints are similar and also excellent. I felt they were a little easier to use but that is just an opinion...! I used Lite Fab on the GTM Hanriot build posted on this site..... Randy

RE: WWI piloting skills?
ORIGINAL: abufletcher
ORIGINAL: vertical grimmace Interesting about the immelman, I just scrapped it from my flight schedule for the flight sequence for my Fokker DVII. I could just not get it to perform it properly. By the time I get half looped inverted, the ailerons are just dead and could not roll back over. I replaced it with the split S. This should hopefully improve my scores.
The problem in competition would be that the judges would be scoring maneuvers based on some artificial definition of what the move has evolved into rather than awarding points for a ''historically evocative'' flight. Below is a link to what the Immelmann was in Immelmann's time. Also here's a link to an older thread on just about the same topic: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1762533/anchors_1762533/mpage_1/key_real%252Cimmelmann/anchor/tm.htm
Absolutely correct!! We forget that these maneuvers were attack or evasive maneuvers and were not meant to be pretty, nor were they meant to give any warning to the pursuer. I doubt that there was any "setup" for a loop or an immelmann, like diving for speed, you just did it if you thought it would help you survive the day..... Randy

RE: JR 9303 throttle-glow driver mix ????
Thanks Allan!!! That last setup you posted works like a charm!! So, the +178 offset gives the throttle position for the glow driver to become active... the POS0 settings tell it how much signal to send to the glow driver +100 at low throttle(position +178) with the gear sw at POS0.. the POS1 setting take the throttle out of the picture with the switch at POS1 and allows full time operation of the driver Is that basically it?? Now that I know it does work, I'm trying to understand why....!! Thanks again!! Randy

Glow driver setup/tx programming??
OK...I've posted this over in the radio forum with no solution yet.... Here is the idea. OS 160 twin, McDaniel 472 Twin cylinder glow driver, JR9303 radio. I was told long ago, and it makes perfect sense to me, that you need to have your glow driver on a switch that is independent of the throttle with a two or more cylinder engine. The idea is that if you loose a cylinder at low altitude, the last thing you want to do is reduce the throttle to re-light the dead cylinder...better just to flip a switch and off you go...I have that setup and it works fine..but I'm tired of flipping the switch on and off in low altitude/low power situations just as a precaution! I know.."then don't".. but that doesn't work for me... What I would like is to mix a couple of channels on my JR9303 TX so I get both the ability to turn the glow driver "on" manually at any throttle setting, and the "automatic" function of having the glow driver come on at throttle settings less that 1/3rd or 1/4 ... Now, I know there are smarter glow drivers out there....but I have this one and it is installed and works fine. Also, McDaniel offers a PC Switch that will do what I want, but it means more money and another little electronic unit in the model... Any ideas?? I'm going to the USSM Championships in September with the Hanriot and I want to get all my ducks in a row before I leave...!! Randy

RE: JR 9303 throttle-glow driver mix ????
I will try that. But, I am able to successfully mix the throttle to the glow driver(gear)....that part works fine. What I am unable to do is override the mix function allowing me to manually turn the glow driver "on" regardless of throttle stick position....ideally I would be able to move the gear switch to position "1" and have the glow driver on continuously with out regard to throttle stick position, OR, I could move the gear switch to "0" and the glow driver would come on only below a specific throttle stick position, something a little under 1/2 throttle.
ORIGINAL: abufletcher I think what I'm essentially seeing on landings is the model stalling out about 2-3 feet above the field. It's not a nasty tip stall, but the nice low angle I've got up to that point disappears fast. All bad sides apart, there is a certain thrill to flying it that the Puppeteer lacks. It wouldn't trade my eccentric flying Legionnaire for all the pattern planes in the world! [;)]
Nice work on getting the Legionnaire flying!! AOL chooses not to notify me of posts in threads I've subscribed to, so I had to catch up!! Are you attempting three-point landings or wheel landings??? Three points are tough without dropping a wing or a bounce or both. Try wheel landings...pretty much fly the airplane gently onto the ground at a low power setting and then close the throttle...but, all models are different and conditions are different from day to day...and remember, the landing is not over until the airplane is at a complete stop...stay active on the controls until then!! Good Work!! Randy

RE: JR 9303 throttle-glow driver mix ????
Hi Allan, I will try that...regarding the signal to the glow driver I can play with the values and see what works. With the Monitor screen displayed the gear channel moves when the throttle is advanced or retarded but not from one extreme to the other as it does when activated with the gear switch....I'll inhibit the gear sw and see what that does... RE: JR 9303 throttle-glow driver mix ????
Hi Allan, Thanks for the response. That is the setup I have now. With the gear switch set to "0" the glow driver is always off. With the switch set to "1" the glow driver comes on when the throttle is just below 1/2. What I would like to do is have the glow driver linked to the throttle, so it will be on at low throttle, and off at higher settings, but i would also like to overide this so the glow driver would be "on" all the time, via a switch...the gear switch preferably. Maybe the 9303 is not able to do this.... What I did not do was inhibit the gear switch...but the glow driver is plugged into the gear channel....I used Mix 3 and #throt which according to the book allows the throttle stick to act as an on-off switch.... I will keep trying... Randy

JR 9303 throttle-glow driver mix ????
Here is what I would like to do. Presently the McDaniel twin cylinder #472 glow driver is plugged into the gear channel, fixed gear model-so I can turn it on and off whenever I like. I would prefer to mix the gear/glow driver channel to the throttle so the glow driver comes on at low throttle, but I would also like to be able to over-ride this mix and turn the glow driver on at a high throttle setting, in the unlikely event that one cylinder should drop off, I could re-light it without closing the throttle. So far I have been able to mix the glow driver to the throttle, but am only been able to turn the MIX on and off with the gear switch....i.e. at high throttle the gear switch has no effect, it only controls the driver at low throttle settings...Mcdaniel offers a PC unit that can do this, but if I can do it with a tx mix I save about $55.... Any suggestions??? Thanks, Randy

RE: Cermark Pitts Build/Assembly
I never tried an 18-6. The manual recommends some odd sizes, 15-8, 14-13.5 among others. 16-8 and 18-6 are both listed, along with the 16-10 in the "scale" column. An 18-6 may be better, as I do have a little trouble getting a slow enough idle with the 16-8 so the airplane will stop on the ground....less pitch may solve that..... Randy

RE: My thoughts on the Spektrum incidents...
If 2, 3 or 4 or more receivers are set to "bind" mode, and the the transmitter is turned on in "bind" mode, then all the receivers will bind to that transmitter and model memory....if you replace an AR6200 with an AR7000 in a plane, the old 6200 rx remains bound to the tx until you bind it to something else, even though you also bound the new 7000..... If wanted to get really crazy, you could place several receivers around your flying site, all bound to the same model memory and all with data loggers, and go fly....you would expect all the ground receivers to have a clear record..no holds or fades, but if they had holds, fades and/or frame losses, that would mean a signial interuption from the transmitter, and would have nothing to do with the attitude or distance of a flying model.....I would think this would indicate a transmitter fault....

RE: My thoughts on the Spektrum incidents...
I would just take a second complete airplane, or maybe just the fuse. That way I could just bind it and try it...it is a glow model so no motor function to worry about. The logger is already installed. Two data loggers would be the way maybe, one airborne and one on the ground, but I only have one, and see no need to buy another just for this. We'll see.....the trick will be remembering to bind the test model back to it's original model setup.....

What if someone were to take a second receiver, bind it to the same transmitter and model memory as he/she happened to be flying that day, and leave that second receiver, with a data logger, on the ground, powered up, several paces away while they flew? That second receiver/data logger should not record any fades, holds or frame losses, but if it did? I have not experienced any of the loss of control problems that others report, but I may try this, just for fun... Randy

RE: My thoughts on the Spektrum incidents...
I too bought several new receivers at the local shop that did not have the QC upgrade. I even received a couple without the QC from Horizon during their "buy one get one free" promotion a year or so ago...so I just re-packed them and sent them in for the upgrade. I even had an AR6200 where the main rx had the QC but the satellite did not. I too wonder at the similar failure reports that indicate full aileron and full elevator deflection. Thank goodness I have not had this issue, but I primarily use a JR 9303 tx with the Spektrum module. The DX7 is used mostly for indoor and park flyers. Perhaps the fault is in the transmitter?? http://www.spektrumrc.com/Articles/Article.aspx?ArticleID=1756 Randy

RE: ar 7000 reciver
If it were me I would connect that questionable satellite to the ar7000 that does not seem to work and sent the package to Horizon. If you have another TX available, try it just to see what happens. Is the satellite that is slow to bind a long way away from the main rx? In a 1/3 Cub I suppose you could be 36" away. Try moving the satellite close to the main rx and keep the tx close to both while binding. They have to be able to communicate both ways to bind, tx to rx and rx to tx as I understand it... You might also try a different cable to connect the satellite to the main rx.... Let us know what you decide Randy

RE: what to turn on first?
I have always understood that you should turn the tx on first. This allows the tx to scan for two unused channels and then lock on to and transmit on those channels. Turning the rx on second then allows the rx to scan for the correct GUID i.e. the tx it is bound to, and off you go. In the 72mhz days we always tried to turn the rx on first, supposedly to see if someone else was on the same frequency before we turned on the tx and shot them down... I'll have to try your way. Obviously it works.... Randy
