RE: Warbird balbo
Thanks for the link. Nice take off by the first Yak. It is interesting to see how sloppy the flying always is in a Balbo. The video with the Moki radials at the British Nationals is worth a look, too. Beautiful Sea Fury in that one. (The Corsair, P-47 and Yak aren't bad, either). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L19xA93LQm0&feature=relmfu

Chris - Now that you've received your Airworld Sea Fury, how do you like it? It sure looks nice on their website! grw57 - The EDSG repaint sure makes your Sea Fury look nice. It was worth the effort. Glad to hear it's a good flyer. Jay

RE: Macchi C202 Folgore
There are two Macchi C.202s left. One is at the Smithsonian, the other is at the Italian Air Force Museum outside of Rome. There are also three Macchi C.205s, which are basically hopped-up Macchi C.202s. All three are in Italy. One is at the Italian Air Force Museum, the second is at the Macchi plant, and the third is at the Italian Museum of Science and Technology. There is also a company in Italy that makes excellent full scale replicas for display. They are designed to be easily transportable and quick to set up and take down. I keep wanting one for the front lawn, but the wife says no. You could always drop $1,000 on this new 96 incher from Easy Tiger: http://easytigermodels.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14&products_id=338&zenid=2f227ef850421b7e8ae093017ff20b7f I keep holding out for Jerry Bates (or Chad) to release plans.

RE: Chino airshow 2012
I heard that when the day comes that they finish the Airacomet, the theme of the following year's airshow will be "The Planes of Larry Bell". The idea will be to gather all the airworthy P-39s and P-63s and fly them along with the Airacomet. How cool would that be!

RE: Black Horse Macchi C.200
It will take up to a 3.25 inch wheel without having to modify the wheel wells. I believe the tires it comes with are a little under 3". If you want to go larger, you're going to have to start tearing apart the wings. If you go to a forked strut, you're also going to have to tear apart the wings. Consequently, I'm just replacing the gear with higher quality Robart units that I already have, and am going with 3.25 inch wheels. My friend is going to use the Wingspan electric gear and Robart struts. I switched my cockpit mounting over to magnets.

RE: Planes of Fame Airshow 2012, May 5-6
Matt, Since you're not familiar with the airport, here's a couple more tidbits. All the cars are parked in one big dirt field. You don't get any say in where you park. You'll then follow the crowd to the gate that lets you into the actual airport. They run free trams that take you almost to the flightline. Depending on how long the line is, sometimes you can walk it faster. You're headed for the control tower. You'll be able to see it from the parking area. The tower is almost used like a pylon during the show, so anywhere on the ramp is a good viewing spot. It will get crowded, though, so if you want to sit, get there early. And it looks like it will be warm, too. It should be another fantastic show! Jay

RE: Black Horse Macchi C.200
Hi JazzboneCuit, The wing attaches the same way as the giant Hanger 9 P-47, if that's any help. There is a left and right wing panel that side onto an aluminum tube. There are then thumbscrews that you tighten from the inside of the fuselage to secure the wing panels in place. They also provide a second method of securing the wing. There is a small hole in the upper surface of the wing (by the white triangle) where you could insert a screw and tighten it into the aluminum tube. The have put vinyl tubing inside the aluminum tube to keep the screw from vibrating loose. I'll probably just go with the thumb screws from the inside of the fuselage. It has worked fine on the P-47. Hope this helps. Jay

RE: Club letter to local airports within five miles
Hi Frank, I've been a county government analyst for over 20 years. I've drafted my fair share of letters to county department heads and boards of supervisors. My recommendation in your specific instance is to keep it simple and to the point. I would approach it as if the airport manager is new to your county. I would give them a paragraph stating that in accordance with your special use permit with the county, you are giving them the required annual notice of the club's presence. I'd give them a second paragraph about the club's days and hours of operation, operating rules, and contact information for the club president and vice president. If you'd like, you can give them a third paragraph letting them know that the club is fully monitoring the pending FAA NPRM through its national sanctioning body, the AMA. All you want to do is comply with your special use agreement. (It's clear you already know that). Nothing more. All the airport manager wants is to be reminded that you are there so that he can comply with whatever requirements the county has placed on him as airport manager with regards to the model airplane field. He also wants to be up to speed in case an airport user calls him having a melt down because he just saw a model airplane flying near the airport. Jay

RE: Dan Palmer 92
The one Jerry Bates is going to do the plans for will have fiberglass cowls, etc., available from Fighter Aces in the UK. Quality stuff but expensive. There was another build on RCSB where the guy did his own drawings (never formalized for sale) at 120 inches because he found that he could use the Robart P-61 Black Widow gear. Turns out the gear is the correct length and geometry. I'd be more inclined to reduce Jerry's plans to 120 inches so I could use the Robart gear. Here's a link to that build thread: http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4942&PN=4

Black Horse Macchi C.200
I picked up one of the new Black Horse Macchi C.200s a couple of weeks ago. I'm very impressed with the quality. The instructions state it’s 95% almost ready to fly, and for once it’s true. There isn’t much to do – and nothing involving glue or epoxy. The hinges are even pre-installed. And they’re scale hinges! I haven’t put it on a scale but it’s very light. The covering is well done and the colors are correct. The components all fit like they should. They even include the mounting bracket for the retract valve. The only negatives are the landing gear and the position of the pilot. The gear is typical ARF; poorly made and too lightweight for the job. I am going to replace them with a set of Robart 631s and Robostruts. Fortunately the design of the mounting rails will accept heavier gear without any issues. For the tailwheel, I’m just going to go with a steerable nose wheel bracket.

RE: Black Horse Macchi C.200
The position of the pilot is much easier to correct. It wasn’t difficult to remove the bottom of the cockpit floor. I then added a wedge shaped balsa block (2 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 7/8") so that he sits higher and at the right angle. I also gave him a quick spray of Dullcote to knock down the shine. It is a decent bust, and it’s well painted. I also added a magnet while I had the cockpit apart in case I don’t want to keep using the screws to attach it to the fuselage.

Lookie what I got my grubby little mits on! Yep, an ESM P-39 spinner. $65 from TBM. I had it in four days. I'm impressed with the quality, too. I wasn't sure what to expect from ESM. Here's the link: http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/ESMP39-80SP-2.html Now if we could just get Sierra to do gear. Actually, all we really need from Sierra is a nose unit. The mains can be cobbled-together from Robart components, but for a robust, reliable, scale-looking nose gear we need Sierra! Jay
