RE: LawMate 1W transmitter - How to power this?
I figured it out long ago. I just used a 3 cell lipo battery. My airplane has a nitro engine so I don't need to worry about supplying power to the engine and transmitter on one battery. The heat sink that came with my transmitter was just a flat piece of metal with 2 groves. I didn't think that was adequate since the avg daily temperature where I am is in the upper 90s. I put a computer processor heat sink and a low power fan on there.

RE: cheap 4 channel electric trainer?
The easy star doesn't have ailerons. I need something with ailerons or it will be too different and probably not help that much.

cheap 4 channel electric trainer?
I have a Goldberg Eagle 63 inch trainer. I have fpv equipment. I would like to fly fpv. My fpv tx is 2.4GHz. It is NOT compatible with 2.4GHz anything. It completely jams anything and everything that has anything to do with 2.4GHz.I have a 72 MHz controller TX that does not support buddybox. I can't learn to fly fpv at my club feild. Due to the AMA rule about buddybox. I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair of 72MHz TX's that support buddy box just to have permission to fly it at my feild. That's wasteful. Mine works PERFECTLY. I have a feild at my house. It's not as good as my club's feild but flying there is better than complying with AMA and buying a pair of transmitters just do I can fly fpv. I've flown there without problems by myself. The only thing is that several weeks ago I misjudged the distance between me and my plane and the trees farther out. I ran into a tree. This evergreen tree must of been at least 150 feet high. My plane was in the very top. It was either climb up there and go get it or abandon it and start over. The plane was stuck in there and moderatly damaged. So to make a long story short I went up there and fell halfway down. At least I came down with my airplane. Anyway I messed up my airplane really really badly. It was on of these things where I had to repair it just to say I did. The servos and everything still worked which was amazing. I finally got it fixed and installed my fpv equipment. Once I got out there I was too shaky to go in a straight line so I gave up. I used to be confident and could fly and take off and land without much effort but when I tried it I was like "Now what will I do if it gets it the air??" because I didn't want to repeat what had happened previously. The way my airplane flys might even be different because I had to rebuild everything except the fuselage and some of the main wing. So now I have to get comfortable flying all over again. I can do it i'm just not comfortable. So I need an inexpensive electric trainer (preferably a foam one) that doesn't go as fast as my 60 size trainer and isn't as intimidating. I need to be able to mount my fpv equipment on it to be able to practice with that. I can go fly at my club any time but I can't do fpv. So what kind of trainer should I get?

RE: Should the AMA consider changing FPV Ops 550.pdf
I fly FPV. Due to AMA rules, I can't fly fpv at the club field. I do it at my house. The feild at my house is much bigger but there are less places to land. I do it anyway because it's just fun. I have my HAM radio license so you can't argue that this is illegal for me to do. I agree with the line of sight rule/law. However I don't think it should be mandatory to have two people doing buddy box. My transmitter isn't compatible with buddy box and I'm not spending $400+ on a transmitter that can do it. Those 2.4GHz transmitter's aren't even compatible with my video transmitting equipment so even if I could shell out that huge amount of money on something I wouldn't spend it on a transmitter I don't need. I am forced to use old but still fully functional 72MHz control equipment which doesn't have buddy box (or at least mine doesn't). I also think the 10 pound and 60mph limit is just a little harsh. My plane weighs less than 10 pounds but I don't see why people shoudln't be allowed to fly fpv on their huge 108 inchers. I don't know how fast I go but I doubt I stay under the 60mph speed limit. The bottom line is that I can't buy a whole new transmitter just to use buddy box and I'm not willing to comply with the 60mph speed limit. So I just fly at my house in the middle of nowhere outside of AMA rules. It's just having fun like we are all trying to do [;)]

RE: Call me Crazy!
When testing on the ground I can walk about 1000 feet away before the signal becomes messed up. This is with trees and all kinds of obstacles in the way. In the air I've haven't had a chance to fly that far away but the video remains crystal clear the majority of the time and without a doubt wouldn't have any problems going further. A guy with the same transmitter as me was able to fly 35,600 feet in the air at a line of site distance of 13 miles. This was with a directional antenna. The most cost efficient way to get that kind of range would probably be to buy something like this. Here is the antenna the guy in the video used. Note that this is for 2.4ghz stuff and won't work for anything else. You would run out of controller range long before you ran out of video range with that. A 1 watt 2.4ghz transmitter and a standard receiver without a huge antenna should get you really far. Probably further than the range of the average 2.4ghz controller transmitter range since those transmitters have an output of less than 1 watt.

RE: Call me Crazy!
Your crazy. jk My club thinks i'm crazy too but they just don't care for fpv flying. Note that you will need your ham radio license to do any fpv flying. I already have mine. One major problem I've had with attempting to do any fpv flying from a computer is that my laptop can't stand the extreme summer heat. It locks up and I have to do a battery pull. I'm currently working on an intercooler for it. Those cheap laptop cooling pads you can buy aren't enough. Most people just use goggles for fpv flying but you'd have to use your laptop on an adruplane set up with maps and waypoints and stuff like that I would reccomend buying a basic fpv setup before doing anything like buying an autopilot. The best place to buy video transmitters is here. I wouldn't buy that fat shark crap if I were you though. A 100mw transmitter is, indeed, inexpensive but you shouldn't expect a range of more than 30 feet. This place is horrible about including required cables and power adapters. They give you the bare product you ordered but you have to find most of the cords yourself. I had to buy a 12 volt switching adapter for my reciever. My camera actually came with a cord but the video plug was unike any connector I had ever seen before and couldn't find anything that fit it so I soldered a composite video ending on there instead. The important part is that you actually get what you ordered at all. There are very few places where you can buy this stuff at all so you just have to deal with it and have a good understanding of how to wire stuff up and solder. Depending on what transmitter you have depends on what battery you need. My 1 watt transmitter is 12 volts so I use a 3-cell 2200mah lipo battery. I get maybe 1.5-2 hours of battery life with that. The best way to mount cameras on planes that weren't designed for fpv flying or dont have a place to put a camera (i.e. high wing aircraft like mine) is to order meccano parts from here and build something like this to mount the camera on: Here is all my equipment. (excluding misc wires and cables) I needed that stuff to get to where I could watch the live feed on my laptop http://www.urbandrones.com/24Ghz-1W-Lawmate-Transmitter_p_13.html http://www.urbandrones.com/24Ghz-12Channel-FPV-Video-Receiver_p_17.html http://www.urbandrones.com/540-High-Resolution-Camera-low-light-001-Lux-36mm-Lens_p_20.html http://www.all-battery.com/11.1V2200mAh25CLi-PolyBatteryPackWithDeansConnector.aspx http://www.amazon.com/EZgrabber2-Capture-Uploading-Conversion-Gameplay/dp/B0036UUST4 http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Regulated-Camera-Supply-Adapter/dp/B000VRL632/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338158702&sr=8-1 (what I use to power the reciever the didn't provide an adapter for. You could also just use a 11.1 volt (3-cell) lipo battery and take apart that adapter for the output plug if you don't have a way to supply power from your car or soemthing) As for a camera mount that moves around you'd need something like this, two servos and two reciever channels you aren't using to plug them into. As for the "arduplane" setup, you'd need an APM 1 or 2 board, and a battery equal to or greater than 6 volts but less than 12 volts. The battery plugs into your reciever which plugs into the ardupilot's input channels chip to power it and override it. There is a detailed documentaion of that thing (both APM 1 and 2) and how it works here You can get the ardupilot mega board (both 1 and 2) diydrones.com and any batteries from all-battery.com I can't believe I spent an hour and a half typing that. I hope it makes intelligable sense to someone.

RE: Facetime FPV?
Mounting an ipod touch on an airplane... Could be feasible but not cost efficient as you would have to buy one of those severely overpriced wifi amps. WHY they have to charge $1-2k to amplify a wifi signal by 10 measly watts is beyond me but if you had money to burn or already own one you could try it. It would be much much cheaper and better to just buy an fpv setup if you're looking for the cheapest way to have an fpv setup.

fpv camera in cockpit. Does this give me enough view?
I haven't ever flown fpv before. I want to place my fpv camera in the cockpit to keep from getting engine oil and stuff all over the lens. Here's a picture of what it looks like. Since I haven't ever flown fpv before, I don't know if that's a good place to put my camera or a bad useless place to put it. What do you think?

RE: new google out Finwing FPV airplane
That looks like a nice plane. I need something other than my .60 size nitro airplane to practice fpv flying with. Mine goes way too fast and is easy to crash. Servos can survive crashes into trees at 70mph but fpv equipment can't.

RE: My first wreck
Here is what it looks like to one side of the feild. Do you think that would be a good place to take off? There's an overhanging tree but I could ask the neighbor if it's ok if I trim his tree. Either that or I could try to take off and land further down. What do you guys think? As for the repairs it hasn't been too bad. I just spent about 45 minutes cutting parts and glueing everything back together. Here's what I have: I drilled a hole in the new dowel rod and put a small nail in there and glued it and put it in the end of the old one to make sure they're both attached real good. All I have to do now is wait for the glue to dry and put new covering on it. I'm glad this crash wasn't very bad.

My first wreck
So today I decided to try to fly in a feild next to my house. It's about as big as the one at the local club and I don't have to drive there and use up gas. I asked my neighbor if I could fly over his feild and use the middle section as a runway and he said I could. He also said it was ok to mow the grass in the middle section lower if I needed to. I mowed the grass as low as my mower would cut it. This "runway" is about 12 feet wide and has trees lining both sides. Here's a picture: The grass was still way too high after mowing it as low as my mower could mow it. So there was grass flying all over the place from my propellor. I even almost hit a tree the first time. I never got very much speed. After my last try, I starting going down the runway. I didn't get going very fast. Maybe like 5-10mph. When I got moving at about that speed my plane started wanting to swerve and I hit a tree and broke my wing. The whole thing was very poor judgment and I deserved it. At first it looked really bad. I was worried it broke stuff like the metal arm that moves the ailerons and I wasn't going to be able to fix it and make it work the way it should again. After ripping off the cover paper, I saw that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. Here are some pictures: I guess the way the ground is curved is why it didn't want to go strait. I'm going to need to find a better place to take off and land or else spend at least 2x as much on gas going back and fourth to the club feild.

RE: I DID IT!!First solo flight, well first flight period
Congrats on your flight! I am new to this hobby as well. I spent the first 3 months putting back together an old trainer someone gave me. Using only information on the internet, I was able to make it flyable by myself. The only thing I didn't do right was buy a reverse prop instead of a normal one. It drove me crazy wondering why the engine always started backwards haha. I knew I would of crashed it if I would of tried to fly it without help though. After 2 training sessions, I soloed.

Best way to power video transmitter?
I know this isn't the right section in the forums to ask this but no one ever goes on the fpv section. I just have a noob question about powering a LawMate 1W 2.4GHz video reciever. Here is the picture of the datasheet Can I just power it with any 11.1 volt lipo battery or do i have to get down and dirty with voltage regulators and use a 14.8 battery to make sure it's at exactly 12 volts? If I have to use voltage regulators, whats one that would work? Thanks

LawMate 1W transmitter - How to power this?
I purcahsed a Lawmate 1W transmitter from the internet today along with a reciever and camera. I haven't ordered a battery for the transmitter yet because I'm not 100% sure what kind to use. I just know it's 12 volts and an nimh battery will probably fry it because of how it's voltage drasticly chages (correct me if i'm wrong) What kind of battery would you guys who know a lot about this reccomend? And what would be an inexpensive charger? I don't own a lipoly charger. I own a universal nimh charger if there are any nimh batteries that will work. Thanks

Wow that's a bad crash. At least your friend has an excuse to buy a new airplane. Maybe you could get a seperate battery for the engine and reciever if it's not too expensive to prevent a total loss of control again.

RE: FINALLY got engine to start- cant get it to work right for anything
Ok. I' sending an email to my local club now. EDIT: after internet research and hours of messing with it, the bottom line is that the threads on my engine's shaft are gummed up to such an extent it's impossible to screw anything on there especially with how it leaks oil and there is no possible way of getting it to ANYTHING like that. Im really mad. Is it possible to fix that?

RE: FINALLY got engine to start- cant get it to work right for anything
As I recall from the thread about having trouble starting the engine, it's already been said that needle valves have absolutely nothing to do with starting. Starting is all about the prime. You can start a properly primed engine with both fuel lines disconnected and it will run for a few seconds. If you engine won't start, it isn't primed right. Tweaking the needles to try to get an engine to start right is an exercise in futility.
I swear that this engine wont start if my needle vavle is set more than 2 turns open if it's cooled off and hadn't run in the last 2 minutes. However, I did manage to get it to start on 4 turns open after I took a heat gun and heated it up real good. This was only after I was about to give up and this was the last thing I was going ot try before giving up for the day. After I heated it up, it started on the first try. With the needle valve as far open as it can go, my engine still stops after about 1/2 throttle. When it starts going the opposite direction, it runs louder and seems to run better. So I thought i'd turn the propellor the other way and see how that went. I was so so close to getting to what I thought would be the thing that finally works. 2 months or so of hard work and it was finally going to do something right. I tried to losen the hex nut holding the propellor. It was kind of stuck. So I took a clamp and held on to the metal ring that's behind the propellor and everything which is the only thing that I thought was part of the shaft. (picture below). I tried to losen the nut. Well that metal thing came loose!! Oil had leaked under it and made it come off. tried to clean everything off with degreaser once I got the propellor off (by putting a nail in the piston inside the engine so it would temporarily stay). No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get it to become clean enough to go on and stay on so I could tighten anything. WHAT DO I DO NOW??? Order a new engine?

FINALLY got engine to start- cant get it to work right for anything
A few weeks ago I posted a thead where I was trying to get my new engine to start. You all were very helpful. I eventually got it to start but became busy and wasn't able to work on it any more until recently. The thing that kept it from starting is because I didn't have the throttle on "idle". It was maybe 1/3rd and I thought that was idle. Now that I can start it I have a whole new problem. It wont stay on all the time. Sometimes it will stay on until I try to open the throttle past 1/3rd or so. It will also start backwards right after I prime it and run loud and steadily like it seems it should minus the fact it's going the wrong way. I have tried messing with the needle vavle. If I turn it more than 1/2 a turn leaner or richer than the 1 and a half turns it says in the manual, it wont start and if it's running, it dies. I'm using 15% nitro fuel and this engine: http://www.hobbypartz.com/72p-s61aii.html So should I put on the propellor the other way? Should I touch the adjustable screw close to the carb? I dont know what to do but I know one of you guys know what im doing wrong or what I need to change.

RE: I can't get this new engine to start for anything
There is a hobby shop 35 miles away from where I live. From Google street view it hardly looks like a store and is out in the middle of absolutly nowhere. It supposedly carries the dx7i but I don't believe that (I saw that on Spektrum's wedsite). But who knows I might go there and see if they have fuel or even exist. A few minutes ago I tried to start my engine. It jumped several times in the opposite direction that I was trying to get it to spin with the chicken stick (im glad I wasn't dumb enough to use my finger). I don't know what was up with that. Also a few times it jumped and got stuck right when the compression chamber was at it's most compressed point. I have soaked the engine in oil trying to get rid of that one hard spot but it seems to be supposed to be like that. When I turn the prop with the glow plug out, however, it still has that hard spot. The hard spot is when the piston arm is strait up.

RE: I can't get this new engine to start for anything
one quick question. Are you sure you have the proper lines hooked up? can you drain and fill the tank from the line that goes to to carburator. The reason I ask is that it sounds like you are running off a prime and not pulling out of the tank.
Yes they are hooked up correctly. I drain and fill the tank from the same one that goes into the carburator.
If it's not then you must not have any compression or the plugs is not hot enough or the fuel is junk. Forget about all the high end, low end needle adjustments until you can at least get it to pop. Oh and by the way $35.00 for a gallon of 15% fuel is highway robbery. I'm using 35% fuel in my racers and the cost is less than that.
Ok well I can feel compression and I have seen my glow plug glowing and even bought another one just in case and it still glows just right. So that leads me to start thinking that maybe the fuel I got was a rip off after all. What kind would you reccommend?

RE: I can't get this new engine to start for anything
im using 15% nitro fue. This is where I got it: http://www.amazon.com/Torco-Fuel-Nitro-Airplane-Gallon/dp/B005TKQUMI/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1331171383&sr=1-1 I have made absolute certain that there is nothing blocking the lines as of now. I tried putting a small squirt of fuel and it's still doing the same thing. In fact I haven't really got it to do anything other than jump a little when I try to start it for the past week or however long i've been trying to get it to start. I didn't try much of Wayne Miller's advice mainly because I don't have much free time today. Tomorrow I will do all that and follow it as closely as possible and tell you if I had any luck.

RE: I can't get this new engine to start for anything
OK I tried opening the needle valve to 3 turns instead of 2. Then 4. Still nothing. The manual said 1 and a half. After spending all day messing with it a couple days ago on 1 1/2, I decided that's not going to work. It wants to start and I can smell cumbusted fuel (although this isn't anything new). I can see fuel by looking into the carb when I spin the prop. Sometimes a little fuel will come flying out of the carb when I try to start it. I don't know it they usually just do that or if it means something.

I can't get this new engine to start for anything
This may quite possibly be a really noobish question. So I have been working on restoring an airplane someone gave me for the past month or two. I have just about everything working except the engine. It had an OS .45 engine on it. I made sure the glow plug worked, the glow starter worked and was the right kind, the fuel tank could hold pressure properly and that it was fully oiled and everything I could possibly find on the internet. I couldn't get that thing to start for the life of me. I got it to run twice for just a second but that's it. After a week of messing with it, I bought an ASP .61 engine. Here is the exact place I got it from. http://www.hobbypartz.com/72p-s61aii.html I made sure it was properly oiled, bought a new glow plug just to be safe (even though the one I already had lit up the way it needed to), read what little of an instruction manual it came with and followed what it said and tried everything I know about to get it to work. I tried turning the propellor clockwise, turning it counter-clockwise and even tried an electric starter. One time when I tried starting it by turning it counter clockwise, it ran - for about 2 piston cycles. With the electric starter it spun the prop around a little but the most it did was melt the end of my nose cone a little and make a weird smell. I'm not experienced at this at all but in all the videos i've ever seen, they simply start their engines with a LOT less effort than it takes me to make mine do anything. I've got to be missing something and it's going to be a huge noob moment when someone points out the one thing I missed lol. Any ideas?

RE: Century 7 Radio won't charge after getting new battery.
I currently have a JR charger. If I buy a new charger, will it be ok if I reverse the wires? I'll look to see if my transmitter has one of those diodes. How would I replace one? I don't know for sure if it doesn't work but the light on my charger has never lit so it could of been blown all this time.

Century 7 Radio won't charge after getting new battery.
Ok so I have a Century VII radio system with reciever. I bought a new battery for it because the old one didn't work at all. This battery to be exact if it makes any difference at all: http://www.amazon.com/Tenergy-2000mAh-NT8S600B-Transmiter-Airplanes/dp/B00384JI3K/ref=sr_1_17?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1331060385&sr=1-17 After an hour of soldering the connector on to this new battery which was previously on the old one, I plugged it in and it worked just fine. The battery held up for about a week until it needed to be recharged. The charger I have goes into the radio controller. There is no easy way to get the battery out of there. But anyway, after leaving it charging overnight, it worked for about 2 minutes but died. The old batter was nicd and the charger is nicd. This battery is nimh but nicd chargers are supposed to work on nimh batteries anyway. So I dont understand. If I buy just any nimh charger will it damage my radio controller? Do I just need to quit messing with it and get a new radio package? (i'd really rather not) Thanks
