RE: Wattage S-3B Viking on steroids
my LSJS motor in that fan is 4500KV and pulls around 18 amps on 3S, and around 25 on 4S, surprisingly low draw for the setup, I'd put a meter on it thought to be sure, when my 30amp ESC burnt up I said the heck with it and went to a 60amp, just to be on the way safe side, it doesn't even get warm...

RE: Great Planes L-39 mods?
I ran my little screamers jet screamer in it and didn't see much difference on 3S on 4S it was a bit better...I should have tried to put the XF fan back in to see if it was better then the hyperflow, I switched to a Phase 3 F-16 and put all the gear in that plane, much faster then the L-39...on my last flight with the L-39 it blew the fan hatch off, resulting in a not so graceful landing, I repaired it but now the airframe is just hanging here, one issue with this plane at higher speeds is the elevator deflection, only the side with the pushrod moves at high speed causing a roll on a hard pull of the elevator...it's a good little plane and can be made a lot faster but you might want to consider some other airframes for high speed use...if you want to stick with the L-39 I would get a motor and ESC from DONS RC that is capable of handling a larger 4S pack and that will get you more speed, maybe switch to a better fan also, not sure which ones will fit, I had to modify the airframe and fan to get the XF fan in there...also a thrust tube would help efficiency...oh and if you go with an ESC from DONS I would opt for the 8 dollar programming card, makes things really easy to set up or change at the field

RE: Airplanes and Pepper Spray...
yeah there's some houses near where I fly, I also fly gas planes, like my waco with a .91 saito four stroke, the EDF is louder though so no noise issue, but a guy did drive up and ask us not to fly over his neighbors house(which I didn't) but I just agreed with him and make sure to leave enough room so that from his angle of view I am not over the house or near it...but with the edf I end up over a different part of town, but then I am about 200 feet up getting ready to buzz the field, but I do have to watch for people walking dogs in the area before dropping in that low...

RE: Airplanes and Pepper Spray...
well maybe if it goes to court they will have some sense and realize that while flying the plane your hands and attention where kinda tied up so it's not like you posed a threat to her, and your didn't get agressive twords her...how ridiculous, I am dreading being told not to fly where I do at a local ball field with a farm field next to it. but I could never imagine something like that happening. thats terrible

RE: EDF reversing for air brakes
I think the relay to switch the two wires with the lockout switch on the landing gear would be the best bet for success, but if you reverse two wires then you'll need to throttle back up to apply the "brakes" so you'd have to reverse all of the fans, which you may as well if going this far already, if you only do half, then half will throttle normal and half backward, so the normal ones will out power the reverse ones. as far as reverse rotation, I don't think they make fans that rotate opposite, unlike a prop plane torque is not much of an issue on a DF plane...you may have an issue though do to the efficiency in reverse, they don't move a hole lot of air the wrong way and also if you have a lot of power it may brake a blade...I like new and unusual stuff though, so I say go for it.

RE: GP L39 - Is Stock Motor/Fan Adequate ?
I have one on the way, should have it by next weekend to fly it, Im putting my XF fan in it with the little screamers jet screamer motor, running a donsRC pentium 30amp esc, electrifly 11.1 1500mah pack...not sure what it will do in the L-39 but I had that combo on a modified stryker and it worked great, not sure on the speed but plenty fast(I'll try to clock this one with my GPS) and the run time was the big plus, I was getting 8 minutes or more out of it and that was flying it pretty hard, I will also be trying a 4s eventually and Im building a thrust vectoring setup for it that will operate with elevator and rudder for some high alpha ability...I'll let you know what happens and start a thread on it, time to make this little thing what it can be...another thought, micro air retracts, I found some light enough if I have room for the bottle and stuff for them...I'll let you know how it does, may save you some cost in playing around with motors till you find one you like...

RE: GP Lear Jet conversion to EDF
with any brushless setup you need an ESC for each motor, depending on size you can run them both on one large li-po like most of the smaller foamies with twin fans in them. I am guessing nacel size will dictate the size of fans you'll be using, I doubt it will weigh more then the glow setup but you might be around the same weight, also you will need to figure out the battery location while building it to get it to balance, it was designed for a glow engine and fuel tang to be up front, now the fans will be pretty far back, hopefully the battery will balance it, retracts would be cool, plus less drag and higher wing loading equals a faster plane which is always good in my book here check this out for ideas, similar size/design, slightly larger so I guess either twin 101mm or twin 90mm, w/e the biggest that fits I'd say...[link=http://www.nitroplanes.com/new-edf-rc-jet.html]http://www.nitroplanes.com/new-edf-rc-jet.html[/link]

RE: Prop for K&B 3.5 outboard
I second the x437/3, I put one on my K&B and it made a huge difference, went from having trouble getting the bot on plane to it not wanting to come off plane unless I really slow it down.

RE: got this engine....anyone know what it is??
yeah I would pass on using that engine, shine it up and display it, if you run it and it breaks something your not gonna be able to find the parts to fix it, plus it's probably putting out the power of a modern .15 which is not much

RE: speed under $400
I picked up a used 7.5 mono a couple years ago, it was a youngblood with a CBM .45, I got it in a trade but I think he only asked 250 for it, so between that and my 2.4GHz radio it was in your price range and it consistantly clocked 53mph on a small pond, depends on what deals you come across and how good you are at building/tweaking...if you find something used someone here can always give you a heads up on what to expect performance wise with it

I tried a new plug but the only plugs I have for a 2 stroke are tower hobbies plugs, probably not the best, I never had an issue with them in the engines in my trucks but if theres something that will be noticeably better I'd give it a try

RE: K&B outboard experts help!
thanks for the starting point on the needle, I'll check it, It seems way rich to me, I have been running boats and cars for awhile and its a real blurbley sound and doesn't want to clear out easily, but I will check it again, the manual on the K&B sight says 5-6 turns which I found was way off, seems the mean half turns I guess...and its rolling over, hasn't blown over backwards yet, balances about a third of it's length in front of the transom. ....just checked, needle was almost 4 turns out, oh I am running 15% nitro in it which may not be enough, but it's just for sport use so I'd like to keep it cheap if possible but if it needs 30% or something I'll get some...this engine is fairly new too, maybe 10 tanks total through it so far if that...

RE: K&B outboard experts help!
I't did but I saw all the air run through the line after the flip...I also made sure the fuel system doesnt have a pressure leak anywhere, seems to hold pressure, its a brand new tank and stopper, stopper is tight, I even flushed the tank thinking it had water in it, and also flushed the engine with nitro, still no dice, then the steering servo took a crap so I gave up for the day, but I'd like to run it next weekend on the V hull I have so hopefully we can nail down the issue till then in case it gets dunked again

K&B outboard experts help!
so my flat bottom outboard boat is a succes with the exception of one problem...it has a tendency to flip over, not usually an issue with a nitro engine, just flush it out and fire it back up. it runs great run after run, but once it gets dunked it won't run more then 100 feet on the water...it fires right up, run on shore as long as Im comfortable letting it run without water to it, throw it in, take off and blah, shuts right off... it did this the other week after rolling and now again today, i let it dry a week or two and its good to go again, I thought maybe the radio got a bit damp and was killing it but it always goes about the same distance and dies, and it doesn't matter how far from the transmitter is it, its a 2.4GHz futaba, and I'd think it's kill it on shore if the radio was acting dumb...it drove me so nuts I just put the engine on a v-hull to avoid the flips but I'd like to be able to run my flat bottom again as it's a lot of fun...

dunno if you caught this yet or not but the outboard is missing the water line that goes from the pickup to the head, you'll need to disassemble the lower to install it,

RE: Li'l Rascal building
to answer your unidirectional question the answer is no, just set it up to turn right, they never turn well to the left due to the torque from the prop, my flat bottom has an outboard and a center skeg so all the turning hardware is centered and it still doesn't turn left well, if they are fast enough turning right is plenty of fun...especially with a small hydro like that, it will be handful in choppy water

RE: Sk-Daddle Too, gone outboard
thanks, hopefully in the coming weeks I can get some video of it, I would have liked to have it flipping on camera, it went over so fast I never saw it coming, it rocked to one side, caught a kicked back the other way and over it went, it was when I was coming out of a corner and I punched the throttle a little early

RE: formula fastech nitro
yeah, that is an issue with the torch, a soldering iron isn't a great option though, the don't heat that fast and if the whole thing heats up then your back to square one...if you do cut it off use a spare nut to run on there to clean the burs of the threads, or a die if you have a tap and die set with the correct size...just go easy on the new collet, people seem to think its gonna fall off, or the shaft will fall out if its not as tight as possible

RE: help on asp outboard motor
I think he's using the shaft starts like they sell with the RTR boats like the miss vegas deuce, several cars use them too, you could make an adapter to flip the polarity though between the starter and battery...where as most of us use the standard plane/boat/heli starters, either with a belt, or on most outboards the rubber cone...is the outboard you have the one with the belts on it, that came on the dolphin boats, and is a copy of the ones ABC used to sell...maybe a picture so we can get an idea on better ways to start it...

RE: formula fastech nitro
I have a small butane torch I bought for around 20 bucks at walmart, works great for heating things like that collet to loosen them up, to hold the crank use a piece of scrap leather around the flywheel and grab it with a channel lock pliers, if it makes little teeth marks in it just file them down, maybe not the prettiest solution but cutting it off your almost always gonna at least nick the threads,

RE: formula fastech nitro
a 3 blade should work well, I had one on a 7.5 mono I had, and now I have one on my flat bottom outboard boat and that is working great too, they seem to help the boat plane out and stay hooked up better than a 2 blade

RE: Sk-Daddle Too, gone outboard
yeah its a world of difference from whatever the other prop is, with the two blade it didn't want to get on plane and when it did it sounded like it wasn't hooked up right, now the second it hits the water that prop is hooked up solid...like I said to fast for it's own good...

RE: Sk-Daddle Too, gone outboard
got the prop on, also added some aeromarine adjustable trim tabs...I did this so when it gets out of shape and the nose lifts, there is something to keep it from blowing over and they already have saved it a few times today...JD, the x437/3 worked beautifully, planes out instantly and really flys. the engine wasn't even close to what it will be when broken in and leaned out a little and it's already to fast for its own good. it's a real handful when it hits and chop but handles well for a flat bottom...flipped it once today, upside down in the water for several minutes and the electronics were all fine, it broke the tank loose but I had some CA with me to fix it...what a blast to drive though, I'm really happy with it. If you want a fast sport boat that will keep things exciting I'd suggest building one of these, my last mono clocked 53mph consistently and compared to that I'd guess it hit 40mph a couple times...

RE: Sk-Daddle Too, gone outboard
thanks, I'll order one, I need to order some other stuff too, thats the prop that was one the engine when I bought it, so I figured I'd see how it worked before trying another but I had a three blade on a 7.5 mono I had it it worked really well, any tips other then the prop change for this engine, I was thinking about going with a tuned pipe eventually but I think its already gonna be pretty fast for a flat bottom so at some point it will be too fast for its own good

RE: Sk-Daddle Too, gone outboard
I'm planning on this boat flipping, but I have had radio boxes that I thought were water tight end up leaking in a violent flip so I figure it I coat the circuit board and water can get to them the only thing that would go out would be the switch, which I have about 5 of them laying here collecting dust, I guess we'll find out soon enough, the needle for the needle valve showed up so I will fire the engine up tonight, won't have time to run the thing in the water until thursday though...if it doesn't work then it will suck cause the rx is like 50-60 bucks, but the servos are cheap...the other issue with a box it where to put it since the linkages to the servos worked out best right where they are and not close to each other, normally they would be under the rear hatch and the hatch would be water tight, but it's not and they can't be there with the outboard setup

RE: Sk-Daddle Too, gone outboard
Thanks, the circuit boards are coated with rubber, and the pins should not really and issue, a battery and electric motor will run submerged so since its only going in fresh water I doubt it will be an issue, if it is I'll build a box but it's sort of an experiment, I have done it with success on ESC's before. oh, also everything is placed off the floor of the boat so any water taken in during a run won't tough anything.
