RE: Small tuning issue
Well I got the new plugs in yesterday. The OS A3 worked better than the #8 I had in it. However, it still wasn't acting right. I replaced the OS A3 with a R1 hot plug and it idles for about 20 sec then dies. The top end with the R1 just screams I love this plug for top end power. But I'm still having the same issues. I also tried to plug off one exhaust port and that just made things worse and I lost a few thousand RPM on the top end even after messing with the needles. So I went back to factory setting on the needles and tried everything over again and the problem still exists. So I pulled the carb off and disassembled it to make sure everything was good, and it was. Then I took apart the remote needle and everything is fine there as well. Then when I was messing with putting the cowl back on I noticed a nice tear in the rubber seal on the front bearing. Shined a flashlight on to it and I could see through the bearing. The bearing its' self doesn't have any play in it but I'm assuming that blown seal is what is causing so many issues. So would this cause major tuning issues like this? I've never had this happen before so I'm unsure. And as someone else asked if it was bad fuel, it is NOT. I opened a fresh gallon of O'Donnell 15% today just to make sure.

RE: Small tuning issue
Thanks for the advice everyone. When the plugs come in from tower I will try again and let you all know how it goes. I'm bumping the heat on the plug up to see if runs better. All my other engines like the hot plugs so I'm also thinking the #8 I have in there is too cold

RE: Small tuning issue
JohnBuckner, Yes I'm military but all the guys I used to fly with are either deployed or have PCSed. I have tuned 5 or so airplane engines and I used to race 1/10 scale stadium trucks. I know how to tune for the most part, not saying I'm a master or anything but I can usually tune and engine by sound alone. My last resort will be taking to the LHS. However, I'm a crew chief so I don't give up easily. Hossfly, The Stinger is band new, I just finished the build on friday. I always take extra time to look the tank over and lines before calling it good. I had an issue with a split line once way back on my trainer and I haven't over looked a fuel line or tank issue since lol. I can assure you that they are good. As far as pressure in the tank, that's what I'm curious about. I read a post on rcgroups that when using the Bison Pitts muffler like I am most guys had to pinch off one of the exhaust pipes to get enuf pressure in the tank. I really don't want to do this but I will if nothing else works. jetmech05, I did run 2 full tanks and about 2/3 of a 3rd tank before trying to tune and fly. I know that things will change as it loosens so I wasn't looking for stellar performance. I just wanted it to run and idle like any engine should.

RE: Small tuning issue
I just ordered some OS A3 plugs on tower and a TT R1. I also turned the needles a bit richer for the next start. We will see how it goes from here. Do you guys think I could have damaged the new engine with these issues? I had a HUGE puddle of oil under the plane when I was running it in on the ground.

RE: Small tuning issue
I just re-read my post, I forgot to mention that with the glow plug igniter on it would idle just fine and at WOT it seemed to have more power as well. I will try your suggestion to make the LSN richer and the HSN leaner. I did think it was odd when I had to turn the HSN about 1/2 turn richer to get it to run right a WOT. I had this engine running just a few weeks ago with the old piston and I didn't change the carb settings.

Small tuning issue
I'm having an issue with my newly rebuilt Evolution .46NX. I replaced the piston/sleave, connecting rod, and wrist pin. Bearing are fine, carb is clean, ect. I was breaking it in today every thing was going well for the most part. However, it will NOT idle. As soon as the RPM drops to what a normal idle should be it just dies without warning. No hessitation, sputtering, or anything of the sort. After 2 tanks I started to find the sweet spot on the high side and set it 2 clicks richer untill I get more run time out of it. I tried messing with the low speed but that just caused more issues with the idle. So I returned that back to where I had it. It transistions very well from low RPM to high RPM after the engine has been at 1/2 or full throttle for a few seconds, so I know the low speed is good. I've checked for any cracks in the fuel lines (which they are new). Someone please help me out because every time I tried to come in for a landing and brought the throttle back I was dead sticking it in. I have added a Bison Pitts muffler to it since this engine is now inside of a Stinger instead my old Escapade. It's the muffler made for an OS 46AX but horizon said it would work without issue. I'm using an OS #8 plug and I will try a #6 next time to see if helps. But does anyone have a clue to what could be wrong?

RE: Escapade or stinger 2
Just got back from flying the new Stinger II. All I can say is WOW! This thing freakin moves! I have an 11x6 on it and it's fast. The engine doesn't have enuf power to do vertical very well but it still powers it nicely. The ending weight ended up being 5.46lbs. I set my CG alittle nose heavy because I didn't want to add any more weight to it. But the CG line only moved 1/16" from factory recommended. It flies great and will do anything an acro is made to do. Snap rolls are incredible, knife edges are beautiful, ect... I think alittle more power would give it that sweet spot, like a 12x6 spinning at the same RPM I am now. Hope this helps you make a decision.

RE: F-18 or f-15... help?
Neither. I used to have a F-16 from nitroplanes and it took full power and about 300ft to get off the ground. and flying it took full power just to stay up. My friend bought a F-15 from them as well and it didn't even have enuf power to take off. We then took my 70mm out and put it in his F-15 and it would fly. So expect to upgrade the motor and ESC if you buy one.

Looking for P51 wing & tail set
I was hoping that some one might have a wing set w/ tube and a tail set for a P51 PTS, RED tail and wing tips. Or if you guys know where I can get them for cheaper than what H9 wants for them. Which is an outrageous $98 a wing! I would wrather junk it and buy a new plane for that kind of money.

RE: Escapade or stinger 2
I had an Escapade and it flew very well untill the gear let go and it did it's final and last no gear belly landing. The gear and canopy are my only complaints about it. The gear broke loose often, however I land on some rough blacktop. For the canopy I ghetto rigged it with rubber bands to get it to stay on. With the higher wing loading I also had to land with some speed or it would drop a wing. Just bought a Stinger II a couple weeks ago (replacing the Escapade) and I'm almost done putting it together but so far it's been very easy to assemble. I'm using HiTec 485HB servos and a rebuilt Evolution .46 with a pitts muffler. I should have it in the air next weekend and I'll let you know how it performs. But from how it looks and the wing loading, I think it will a very nice flyer.

On towerhobbies they are cheap at $2 something and if you buy 6 you get discounted for one so it's like buy 5 get one free. I'm also using a DuBro aluminum prop nut not the plastic spinner. I hate the plastic spinner's but that's just my opinion. And if you want a colored tip, just paint it.

I have a 11x6 on mine and I've tried a 10x6 and 10x7. I like the 11x6 the best but had to up the nose tire 2 sizes and I bent the mains a tad to lower them. She fly's great with it and I can get 20min a tank at half throttle. Lands WAY easier with my modifications that I made to the main gear, no more bouncing due to the stupid wire gear.

RE: P51 .40 size with Enya .90 4c?
I looked up the airplane specs and it says I can use a .60. I weighed the .46 that's in it and it weighed in at 20oz. My Enya is 27.22oz. Is 7oz really enuf to throw it off? I know I will need to find the CG again but that's easy with battery placement. Do you know where I can get a rectangle tank or of a way to mold a tank into the airplane? I ask because the space I have is limited where the tank is supposed to go.

Just bought a used H9 P51 PTS and was wondering if I could install my Enya .90 4c, or would this be too much weight/power? Would I have to drill different holes in the firewall to get a .90 size mount to fit? If so, is there a tutorial on how to do this without loosing the thrust line?

RE: choosing second plane
Well I bought a H9 P51 PTS used from my LHS. It came with an extra fuselage because the guy before me recieved it with a broken air scoop. But he fixed it and never took the extra fuselage out of the plastic. I paid $220 but after getting it home I wish I would have talked him down a bit more. The engine on this thing looks like crap and you can tell it wasn't taken care of. But the rest of the plane is good condition. I still have my Enya 90 sitting here though. I was thinking about putting it on the P51 What do you guys think? I'm also getting a very used and beat up Escapade .40 from a friend for $40. I think I will use this to learn on for a bit.

I see your guy's point. I haven't already decided on what to get, I am hard headed though. I started with an EDF F-16, big mistake lol. It was eventful when it smashed into the ground at full speed though. I take another look at the stick's in a 60 size, but does any company offer a good .60 size stick that isn't ugly (referring to the GP one).

RE: choosing second plane
I agree that too much power is well, too much power. I'm meaning I like to have enuf power to go vertical, doesn't have to rocket into the sky just climb up there. I've learned alot about throttle management mainly because one day we got bord out on the flied and decided to pull an OS 55ax with 12x7 APC out of one of his planes and install it into my trainer. Man that was incredible power to weight. Little too much at that, almost ripped the wings off lol. But I'm seriously considering the Escapade .60 to install this engine into. It looks nice, fairly cheap, and has a huge wing area, wing loading is about 23-27 though so it's not as good as a stick but WAY more attractive. Do you guys trust nylon geared servo's or metal all the way? I'm looking for core-less and found the Futaba S9001 and I would run a LiFe battery 3200mah for it on a Spektrum A6210 receiver so I can re-use the DX5 that I have.

RE: choosing second plane
With the Enya 90 I'm looking at the Escapade .60 but I'm unsure if the engine will be able to pull it like I want. I've always been on the "overpower it" side when it comes to these planes, however this thing weighs in at 27.4oz according to my scale. I mainly like to overpower it so I can fly at 1/2 throttle and if things get hairy I can just snap it to WOT and pull my self out. Most people suggest a 14x6 K series or 12x8 APC for this engine. What are your guy's thoughts on overpowering a plane, and what would be good for this heavy engine? Or are the .40 size ones you've been listing is what it should go in?

Out of these airplanes what would you guys recommend? All running Hitech 5485 servo's and a Magnum 70 4 stroke swinging a 13x6 at about 10K RPM. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAVPJ&P=ML Stinger II http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/twist-40-arf-version-2-HAN2660 Twist 40 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLGM8&P=ML Dolphin Like I said I'm not looking to break the bank so these are my watch list. Only one I know I've got to do a little work on is the Dolphin because the hinges and control horns suck. I'm not into the look of the stick's, I want a low or mid wing sport plane or the P-51 (only warbird I like).

choosing second plane
First I want to start with saying that I've been flying my Alpha 40 for about 4 months now every weekend and use my flight sim about once a week flying different planes. I've modified my Alpha 40 with increasing the throws and beefing up the tail and wings so they will hold together with the bigger flight control movements. My "instructor" (a guy I've been flying with that's been doing it since he was 9 and from seeing him fly is a damn good pilot that know's what he's doing) said that I should skip the basic low wing sport plane and jump to an Extra 300 or Edge 540 because I've been advancing so fast in my skill level. I was originally looking at getting a Phoenix Dolphin and beefing it up handle more than it was probly ment to, or getting a P-51 from Hangar 9. Either of which I'm wanting to install a 4 stroke, Enya 80 or Magnum 70. So what do you guys think I should do or do you have a different plane to suggest? I'm not looking to break the bank on this but if I can get just the airframe for $160 - $200ish that is .40 size to fit one of those 2 engines I'll be happy. Also, what servo's are good yet cheap? I've been looking at the Hitec 5485 and 5625. Lastly, is $150 a good price for an Enya 80 new in box for the 1980's?

Enya 80-4C or Magnum 70?
I've got a guy at work that I've been talking to about building a new sport plane with a 4 cycle and he said that he has a new in box Enya 70 from the 1980's that he bought back then to install into one of his but never built anything that he wanted to put it in. All I can find on google is Enya 80-4C so I'm assuming that's what it is, and he wants $150 for it. I've also been looking at the Magnum 70 because it seems like a good engine and fairly cheap, it costs $160 at tower hobbies. So my questions are, which one would you choose and is $150 a reasonable price for the Enya?

RE: Pulse XT60 w/ DLE20 questions
Thanks for the info guys. I might go with the 125 then so I can have a gasser. What is a good torque number to look for on a servo for a 125 size airplane? Any other info on what to reinforce or change while building it? I would like to do things right the first time and not have to tear it all apart later down the road. I do have some questions though from that other post that catflyer reffered me to. What is the bennifit of using the pull-pull rudder since this plane isn't designed for speed? What is the advantage of having the optical kill switch thing?

RE: Pulse XT60 w/ DLE20 questions
Yeah that's what I was afraid of...too much power. I'm not afraid to put more power in an airplane but I'm not looking to overspeed the airframe and rip the thing apart in-flight. Does the Pulse XT40 fly as well as the 60 size? I was told that the 60size airplanes fly way better than their 40 size counter part. I was originally going to get an ultra stick but the wing area on the pulse was greater and it looks easier to fly. I haven't commited to anything yet so I'm open to suggestions. I don't want to go over $300 for the airframe or over a 60 size (anything over 6ft wing I wont be able to transport), but I want a gasser. Thanks so far for yall's input so far.

Pulse XT60 w/ DLE20 questions
I'm looking to step up to a sport plane from my Alpha 40 trainer. I have about 6mo flying experience of every weekend for about 4hrs each day and countless hours on the Phoenix flight sim with all kinds of planes. The price of glow is ridiculous at $105 for 4 gallons so I'm wanting to get a gas engine. I'm stepping up in a big way and need some advice. Will the DLE20 be too much engine for the Pulse XT 60? What size of prop would best suit me in the beginning? using APC props Is it true that I will get radio interference with a gas engine? If so how do I go about fixing this? How long would a 6v 4500mah NiMh battery last for the ignition source, or is there a better one? Does the engine need to be mounted side ways or upside down? What is the benefit of this and can I mount it right-side-up? Would the Hitech 5625MG servos be good enough for this plane? I'm not wanting to break the bank and these seam nice for the price/performance ratio. I was originally looking at getting a FG-17 Saito but I've heard nothing but bad things from Saito's gas line. Are they really THAT bad of an engine?
