RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
Welcome back yel914 and thank you! Magnetic build boards are very nice and is on my long list of wants...someday! Gary another advantage is the price, it's so much cheaper than CA!

RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
LOL, Mike no secret. Before I install each rib I put some glue (Titebond) on the end grain of the rib that would go on the spar I let it sit for 30 seconds letting the glue get wicked into the wood then add a bit more if need be. I then place the rib into position and clean off the excess with a small flat bladed screwdriver. The excess glue dosen't really add any strength and saves weight in the long run...

RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
The first two photos show how I held the 1/8" x 3/4" x 42" balsa leading edge in place at the front of the ribs as the glue set up. I like to use 3/4" aluminum square stock to ensure the same pressure is being applied with clamps. Time to install the shear webbing to the front and back of the spars between each rib. The kit comes with lite-ply to be used on the front of the first four ribs only, after the fourth rib you are instructed to switch to 3/32" balsa for the rest. The plans do not show any shear webbing on the three last rib bays nearest the wing tip. I decided to install shear webbing for all bays making a stronger structure. After separating all of the lite-ply webbing from the sheet being carefull not to damage any, I didn't like the fit between each rib so I decided to make my own instead. I like my shear webs to fully contact each rib ensuring that the rib cannot move or twist. End result a stronger wing assembly. Note: When using balsa for shear webbing be sure to orientate the grain vertically for strength.

RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
Welcome hairy46! Dave you must have missed post #40 LOL. Titebond can be unclamped after 15-20 minutes. It is not completely cured but it has set so you can continue your work. David, you are correct, it is a DLE-35RA. I was just too lazy to type in the last few letters. On the glue issue, any glue that you use should be stronger than the balsa if properly applied. If your using thin CA it dosen't fill gaps well so your joints need to be pretty tight for good holding power. Medium and thick type CA's will fill gaps better. jymster, congratulations on the 3rd place finish. Indeed well worth the effort!

RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
David no offense taken... I know that DA is coming out with a 35, but when I called them they told me the engine won't be out till the end of June. I really would have considered it but I'm a bit impatient. I will more than likely use a DA in my next build (believe it or not I've already been thinking about it). I did make it to the LHS and spent a nice time looking at all the things that I want but can't afford...I did make a decision on an engine, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Before I left for the LHS I did glue the last rib on the left wing which is different from the other ribs in that it is not glued plum as the rest are. This rib is installed so that their is a dihedral angle set into the rib. There is a lite-ply dihedral gauge that is supplied in the kit that is used to ensure this angle is correct. Removing the gauge from its lite-ply sheet was the next task at hand and this brings us to a tip I would like to share with you. We are all at some point reliant on removing parts from sheets that have been die cut, but where the die did not completely make it through the sheet. So you flex it back and forth a bit and sometimes it separates cleanly but more times than not it comes out with some damage. ( I hate it if that happens.) So I get a single edge razor blade and insert it into the die cut and using a very small 4 oz.ball-peen hammer I give it a whack completing what the die should have done. Obviously it can't be done on curved parts, but it works well if the part is straight. This is how I removed the dihedral gauge in the photo. All the ribs were checked for square and plum before the glue set and the last rib was set to the proper dihedral angle using the gauge block. OK, you probably peeked and saw what engine I chose for this build. It's the new DLE-35 and it will fit very nicely. I chose it over the DLE-30 because of a few factors: 1. The angled sparkplug in the head 2. Rear facing exhaust with pitts style muffler 3. Increased power and RPM over the 30

RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
Glad you found this thread bdshort. Welcome! Made up my list of things I need to buy tomorrow at the LHS for this build to move forward. I will more than likely come home with an engine, so stay tuned on what will power this Spacewalker... Here are some shots of the wing ribs in place, I've tried to show with the camera how everything has lined up. Looks pretty straight to me...I will glue the top spar in the morning.

The wind here where I live (NH) has also been very much a nuisance. If it's not windy it's cold, if its sunny and warm the wind prevents any flying. Been a wierd start to our flying season here. Nice to hear that your almost ready for final assembly, don't forget your followers like pictures...

RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
Welcome back Robert, was wondering where you were! Dave, reducing your exposure to CA is a good thing. CA does have it's place in building, but many are paying the price to its exposure of the fumes. Titebond typically sets up in about 15-20 minutes depending on the amount you use. Dave it also sands off your work a whole lot easier than CA, but the down side is it makes you build slower...

RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
Had to work late last night so I wasn't able to spend any time in the workshop . Since I had already prepped all the wing ribs, I pinned down a Spruce spar to my build table and layed out the ribs in their proper locations. I suppose there are many ways to get this done, but I prefer to do one rib at a time, set it into position carefully with squares and clamp until the glue gets a chance to set. Once it's set I move on to the next rib, not the fastest way, but they come out straight !

RE: Sig Spacewalker II 1/4 scale
All good builds start with a review of the building instruction booklet which I have done several times already. The next step involved a short trip in my truck to visit the local copier in town to have my plans duplicated. I hate to build on folded plans, so for me plans that lay flat is a "must have". I took a quick inventory of the wood in the kit, and was happy to see that everything inside the box was neatly packaged/placed without any visable damage. I sorted the wood and removed the six 1/4"x1/2"x40" Spruce sticks that will become the Main Spar assemblies for the wing. Cutting them to length and glueing them up with epoxy went as planned. As a note, the glue of choice for me is Titebond II wood glue, however since the spars are made from Spruce I find that epoxy is a better choice for strength and holding power for this type of wood. (I use very little if any CA on my builds.) The spars were clamped between some aluminum square stock that I have in the shop to ensure the spars will be straight and true once dry. While waiting for the epoxy to cure I decided to separate the ribs sheets into three piles, starting from the top are ribs W-1, next W-2 followed by a pile of W-3. I released the ribs from their die cut sheets carefully and made one large pile that I will clean up so all of the ribs will have the same identical profile.

Welcome back Dave! I'll try not to disappoint... FlyerInOKC, I couldn't agree with you more. I always give my LHS as much buisness as I can so it won't help lead to them going out of buisness. I don't want to think up how much $$$ they get from me in one years time. I'm pretty sure the rest of you guys are in the same boat.

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Tonight's lesson is titled "How to be a dumb ass". Photo #1 shows the main servo tray that I made. I decided to cut the holes for the rudder and elevator this evening, so I carefully laid out my marks and cut the first hole. I was very pleased with how it all came out until......as photo #2 shows, that I centered the servo in the tray and didn't take into account the offset of the servo arm. There goes two hours of hard work! Of course I don't have another piece of 3/32" ply so now I have to drive to to the LHS and get some. This concludes tonight's lesson from Professor DA!

Sig Ryan STA
Like many others before me, I started in this wonderfull hobby in the early 70's. Having a very limited budget then left me with the hopes of someday building the planes that I wanted during that era at some other time in the future when funds were more available. Fast forward to today, where did all that time go (not to mention my funds)? I've always admired the Sig Ryan STA plane, and recently I had the good fortune to buy one on E-bay for a tidy sum of $225.00. Now buying a NIB kit from 1971 makes one wonder if all that money that you are spending will just be for the plans and instruction booklet, after all, the wood in the kit is 41 years old! My kit arrived recently and I was eager to open it and check its contents. It was like a time capsule. I found the wood to be of the highest quality with no warping, twisting, splitting or hardening of any kind! I really couldn't believe it.... My intentions for this rather hard to find kit is to bring it out of the 70's build technology and bring it into today's technology standards without changing its looks or flight characteristics. There isn't a whole lot of information out there for this type of plane for me to reference. My thoughts are to power this beauty with a DLE20 engine and get rid of all the bellcranks and install individual servos for all the ailerons and flaps along with a pull-pull set-up on the rudder. So that's it in a nut shell, hope you enjoy the process.........

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Thanks OldScaleGuy... Tonight I fit the main servo tray that will hold the elevator and the rudder servos. Also in place is the tray that will hold the throttle servo seen just behind the firewall. All trays are made from 3/32" birch ply and are removable with the exception of the trottle tray. Took me a while to get the servos in a position that I liked and could service down the road. Time will tell if this all works....

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Here's what I've been working on. These pictures show what I came up with to hold the gas tank, throttle and choke servos. (I still have to make the tray that will hold the servos, this will be in front of the tank) There's not a whole lot of room to work and fit everything and have it serviceable should it need to be removed at a later date. The tray is made from 1/8" birch ply and it can be slid in or removed just by removing the two 2-56 bolts that are visable.Lightening holes will be made as well as a slot to hold the tank strap.
