RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Facia, Great recovery after the gear failure and you did the three things a pilot should always do in any emergency situation; Fly the plane, Fly the plane, and Fly the plane.[;)] Flyfast1, I had one, but sold it prior to starting the build. Earlier in this thread you will find my remarks concerning the mix variations. Great looking plane in scale appearances, but it is closer to a MK I or II because the wing panel lines and machine gun ammo bays are that of the (A) model wing. OldScaleGuy, Looking good![8D]

RE: P-40 Brotherhood (All P-40's Welcome)
NFO, One of the benefits of a 4 stroke engine is they will produce 90% of their full rated power when adjusted rich on the top end. If the engine is tightly cowled up, it may be getting hot on the top end causing a reduction in power. You may have tried this, but start by: (A) 1. Check for contamination in fuel system. 2. Remove High End needle and pump fuel through the carburetor to back flush needle seat assembly. You can place plane on nose to help prevent pumping fuel into the cylinder, but either way make sure the engine turns free before proceeding. (B) Low End Needle Adjustment: 1. Run and tune the high end needle and let run at full power for 30 to 60 seconds. 2. Slowly reduce to idle and let idle for 1 minute. • If the engine starts to load the low needle is open too much. Close 1/8 turn at a time and repeat steps 1 and 2 until idle speed remains constant. • If the engine remains constant go back to full power and repeat steps 1 and 2 above. Now pinch the fuel line at the carburetor inlet nipple. (Release fuel line before engine dies) 1. If you have an immediate rise the low end is too lean. Open 1/8 turn and repeat steps (B) 1 & 2 and pinch line again. You are looking for about a 1 second delay before the engine starts to go lean and dies. 2. If a few seconds pass before an engine RPM rises due to the leaning condition the low setting is to rich. Close the low end needle 1/8 of a turn and repeat steps (B) 1 & 2 until you achieve about a 1 second delay before the engine starts to go lean and dies. 3. Once you have achieved the proper low end adjustment go back to full throttle. (It is best to use a tachometer here to be able to see the slight RPM changes) I choose to adjust to max RPM and then richen for a 100-200 RPM drop. This sets me on the beginning rich side of peak. 4. Now, if you still are experiencing a loss of power at top end in flight increase (richen) the high end needle about 25-50 RPM down. If the problem lessons you are most likely loosing power due to an overheating situation. • Readjust per step 4 until your full power setting in max cruse is stable. ( C ) You can go back and recheck the idle mixture at any time per steps (B). I generally use this method for all gas and glow engines. Note: I like the OS F Glow Plug If this does not help then lets look into other probable causes. Hope this helps others too.

RE: P-40 Brotherhood (All P-40's Welcome)
ORIGINAL: naval flight officer #1 handled well enough. They are heavy when you load them up with retracts and flaps ect. As long as you treat them easy and with the understanding that they will tip stall if horsed around they are not too hard to fly. #1 met an untimely death I think due to a flap control horn failure. The plane rolled over and before I could recover it was in pieces all over the field. 90% of my issues come from the retracts. #1 had a hard time getting the gear to fully lock down so more belly landings happened then wheel landings. #2 has a hard time keeping the wheels straight after touch down. Abrubt nose overs on pavement are not easy on the cowl. They are fun to fly and locally here in Jacksonville there are not many warbirds flying so it seems to get the attention of other flyers. Saito 125FS for power. I am really starting not to like 4 stroke engines. I never seem to get them tuned properly and they give me no confidence in flight. MTOW @11-12LBS VNE limited only by the nerves of the pilot (see engine tuning statement above).
NFO, Thanks for the feedback. Strange you are having reliability issues with your Saito 125. Saito’s are considered very reliable powerplants, and in my experiences they are only second to YS as far as glow engines performance go’s; except for the affordability vs YS. However, YS does offer the Sport series now. I had a 110 Sport a couple of years ago, and a friend has one now that produce as much power of the YS- 91’s & 120’s I ran throughout the 1990’s. The 115 looks like a good option. Now, the DLE-20 is proving to be a good fit for the 1/7 scale birds. We have been running them locally in ARF and Kit built warbirds, (P-51’s, Sopwith, Ryan STA, and others) but we have also experienced some issues with a few dead sticks, missing, or burbling. Some are thinking it has to do with the carb being to close to the firewall, but others are not sure yet. We are talking over 6 separate engines, and I have mine I am prepping for my P-40. More to follow on this later. I would guess you have a tuning or fuel tank location issue with your Saito if you are lacking reliability. Another positive thing about the YS, they operate on a pressure system so tank to carburetor issues do not exist. If you would like I could help you troubleshoot and retune the engine via phone and see what happens.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Comp ARF Spitfire update: I can’t remember how many times I installed and removed my powerplant from this airframe, or how much wood I have fabricated into parts I cannot use, but I think I have discovered my chosen method of installation. Although very slow progress has been made with this and other projects, here is where I am at the moment. I added a bulkhead that will retain a removable panel designed to block out the carb bay from the remainder of the fuselage. The additional bulkhead will also be tied to the 1/4 inch aircraft ply firewall to help carry the operational loads of the DA-85. I added fiberglass to the fuselage bond line in the forward sections because I get concerned when I can see light passing through an aircraft structures bond lines. Well back to work on my Mach I Mustang, Ford that is[;)]

Update on 1/7 Scale TF P-40 Kit Build: I managed to move forward on the install of the DLE-20. Plenty of room up front for the ignition, ignition battery, and fuel tank installation. A few more steps and it will be balance and fly time. Currently on the primed bird, I am laying out the install set-up for the E-flight Power 60 electric install, and the wing is undergoing some fiberglass covering.
