RE: Memories of Dad...
I posted up here earlier, but now I am still remembering another good time with my dad, it seems that this thread helps to keep the good memories alive. I just remembered another time with him, I must have been about 6 or 8, he was building a Guillows P-39 Aircobra with me. I can clearly recall pulling the half-built kit down from the shelf in the den while he was at work and I came home from school, and trying to look at the plans by myself, not making much headway, but dad would work with me at night, and I can still remember smell of the Duco cement. Yea, this thread must have a lot of misty eyes on it............

RE: Silk Covering Techniques
ORIGINAL: Doc.316 Hey, I gotta question....Can vinal stickers be used over silk/silkspan covering? If so will the thinners in the dope clearcoat eat them up? I was looking to make some up on my inkjet printer to replace some waterslide decals in an old kit....the old ones aren't useable as is. Thanks Steve
I believe that vynal over silk/dope is fine - look at this photo of the AMA numbers...

Or how about being up late enough to watch the TV stations sign-off? Formation flying, national anthem, picture of flag waving, etc.

RE: Twin .020 Jr Skylark build thread
The CG on my Jr. S is currently at 2.25 inches, which is what the Early RC plan shows. That's right on the main spar.

during the 3 (scary) test flights, the pitch was extremely stable, so I feel comfortable about removing some of the weight. That, plus prop pitch, could really do the trick! Thx..............

Bob, Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to try these avenues first. I really feel that higher pitch will solve the problem. Anything else is major surgery.

Correction - OAW is 20 ounces, I re-read the thread. Here's some interesting highlights: Pg 6, post #126 - bare airframe with dope but before silk - 10 ounces, including all surfaces, etc. Pg 9, post #211 - silked doped painted, landing gear, wheels and engines installed - 14 ounces Pg 10, Post# 226 - pix of radio install way up front.

RE: Twin .020 Jr Skylark build thread
Tha airfrme built light enough, the problem is the placement of the PeeWees is too close to the CG to aid balance. If you read the build thread, I had to put 3 1/2 ounces of lead in the front to balance. The battery is right in front of the LE, and the servos are either at or in front of the CG.

Update - making some progress - found 35% 1/2a fuel from Norvell on the Sig website, so have ordered it. LHS will get me some APC 4x4 props that I will have to bush to fit the 020 shafts. I have to buy a package of 6. Hoping that will be enough, I will have to trim the prop diameter to get the r's up to 16k

PeeWee .020 help
I have a Jr Skylark with two PeeWee .020's Problem is, they do not have enough "oomph" to fly the plane properly. They have 4 1/2 x 2 props turning 16.5k rpm on 25% fuel. I need at least 50% better flying speed. Suggestions? I have found 3 1/8 x 3 3- bladed props on Ebay, and will try a little more nitro, if I can find it. Plan 2 is to take an 049 6x3 and cut it down. Can anyone tell me if the screw size is the same for 049 and 020? Airplane details are at this build thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8268762/tm.htm

RE: Original Taurus Plans Question
Getting back to the subjuect of down & side thrust, I think you cannot go wrong by STARTING with what the deigner did. After that, downthrust is mainly determined by level flight, power on/off, inverted flight, power on/off, and where your CG is for you particular airplane. Very factual. Side thrust, however, is a bit more loosey-goosey, and sometimes has to do with the pilots preference. Also, the exact body build and where you want to add trim vs let the plane track comes into play. For example, too much right thrust will not be noticed in level flight, but shows up dramatically in loops. Maybe not even the inside loops, but outside ones. Of course, you have to determine if the variation in looping is side thrust or left/right balance. I believe it takes at least 100 flights of concentrated effort to really trim out a pattern plane, and even then, you learn a bit more on the second 100 flights, too.

RE: Cutlass Supreme Flies Again!
I saw FB's Cutlass after the last gear flop landing. That's when I arrived for the maiden of the Jr. Skylark. Nice plane, well-built, no signs that it was a kit, so we're thinking it was a scratch project. Glass/paint body, monokote wings. When FB gets done with his recovering magic, it will be beautiful All you Octoberfest guys, wait until you see his Perigee!
ORIGINAL: HighPlains How much nitro in the fuel? Small engines have a huge surface area to displacement ratio, and need lots of nitro to stay warm.
fresh bottle of 25% 1/2a fuel. The engines are turning 16-17k. I need about 50% more thrust. OAW is about 22 ounces.

RE: Twin .020 Jr Skylark build thread
Maiden flight done! Sorry, no photos or movies. You wouldn't want to see them, anyway. Today, Sunday 10/4, we got the Jr S. up in the air, three times, in fact. Each time was it's own disaster. Not to worry, the plane is still in one piece, and will go to Octoberfest in PA, but it probably will not fly. Basic reason: Seriously underpowered! So now the details...... We got the enines purring nicely, both running, preflights all done, time for the launch. With Rick at the controls, I gave the Jr. S. a firm toss, being very ccareful to shoot it straight and level with firm forward motion. The plane left my hands, dipped about 2 or 3 feet, but was level. Rick added up elevator, and she was off. Very slowly off. Really slowly off. She barely could fly. Rick nursed her up a bit more, and slowly got her about 30 feet in to the air when the engines faltered. Luckily, they both stopped about the same, and Rick got back to the field unharmed, Second flight, we tried to get the engines more reliable, but just after launch, the right engine quit, and rick limped it into the cornfield. Luckily, no damage to the plane. Flight #3, got both engines going, launched, and had the same sickly, underpowered barely climbing flight pattern. Upwind (there really wasn't any wind thank God) and a nice downwinf leg to climb to about 100 feet altitude. This plane is pitifully underpowered. Then an engine quit. Well, we (Rick, who was still test pilot) found out that turning into the dead engine was a real no-no, it would wind up real quick. Luckily, proper inputs would take it back to straight and level just as quickly. The plane was out over the tree line, and being so small, was a bit hard to orient. We both lost orientation a time or two, but Rick (God bless him!) got it headin gback to us. That left engine seemed to run forever, makinng turning a bit of a problem. Finally she quit, and the plane settled into a nice glide that landed her into the marginal grass that surrounds the CCRCC field. So the 4.5 x 2 props do not provide enough thrust to power this plane. They are running at 15-16k rpms. Conventional wisdom says that two engines develop more thrust tha one engine of twice the displacement, but you can''t prove it by me. Rick and I agree that we need more pitch, so I have to look for something like a 4 x 3 prop. Any bright ideas anyone can add????

RE: Question on painting procedure
My own preference is to paint the base color with all surfaces off of the airframe. Like Cees says, you get better coverage of the hinge area. Then I mount all the surfaces and mask & spray color, then clearcoat.
