RE: .40-.46 build plans
Well, I got started with a .61 build over the weekend. I've got all the stringers and bulkheads cut out and fitted together, I'll start epoxying as time permits. Greg

RE: .40-.46 build plans
Interestingly, these plans scaled up 25%, yield a boat with the same dimensions (length and beam) as my Big swamp buggy. The BSB with the .61 on it was not at all stable-quite top heavy in fact. Would a flat bottom with these dimensions be stable enough for this engine or should I further increase my overall dimensions? Thanks, Greg

RE: Flat bottom, pusher build
Thanks DBW. I haven't been around here much lately, but it seems we are on the same page as far as Cajun Gator's plans. I've been looking at those plans as well as a few others I've seen. I fully believe his boat is a well proven design and as such will warrant the time/expense to be invested. I like that the engine tower is included as part of the plan, not to mention the lines of the boat. I have been looking at this hull to [link]http://www.rcairboats.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1209[/link][/link], but it is unproven as far as I can tell. My plan would be to scale up Cajun Gator's plan for a .61 size engine. Thanks, Greg

RE: .40-.46 build plans
Hello, really pleased to see this post tonight. I have been checking out these very plans lately-trying to decide what I want to build next. I think the interest here has made up my mind. I would actually be building this boat for a .61 mill. Specifically an OS SF .61, which leads me to my first question. What would be an appropriate size increase to make to the original plans? Also, has anyone mounted their boats fuel tank in the hull, and in turn used a fuel pump to supply fuel to the carb? The kids and I run a Big Swamp Buggy, and I just never liked the fuel tank mounted below the engine. Thanks, Greg.

Flat bottom, pusher build
Does anyone know of plans or a kit for a .60 size flat bottom, pusher? I'm looking for a somewhat scale appearing boat to run in the pond behind my house. I like the Cajun Gator line of boats , but they are just too rich for my blood. Apparently they are only sold RTR, but I,m not entirely sure as my emails aren't returned. I've been running a Dumas BSB, but I'd like something with more realistic handling traits, and I've also got a nice OS .61 SF that needs a home. Thanks, Greg

RE: I converted a glow engine to run on E85
To summarize: E85 with about 10%-15% high quality oil be it a synthetic or castor and a "hot" plug to keep this mixture lit. A leaner mixture setting to account for gasoline's higher heat content/volume compared to alcohol. Does this come close to getting a glow engine to work with this new mix? Is adding some nitro a good idea to keep power up and have good throttle characteristics? Thanks, Greg

O.S. .61 SF ABC info
Hello, posting this here because I believe this was a popular pattern engine back in the day. Looking for some general info on this mill, like when it was produced, strong and weak points, things a guy should look out for. It seems that there were a couple of carb options-like maybe the 7L and the 7M? I just bought a cheap one on Ebay to replace an ailing K&B .40 on an airboat that the kids and I are running. I also won an auction on a very clean looking example as well. Hopefully I won't have to tear down that one down as I just did with the cheap one-it needed a good clean up. The quality of O.S. engines is well documented and it is clearly evident here, after having a look inside I am thoroughly impressed. Hoping my .61 SF's will provide long and reliable service. Please share your thoughts. Thanks, Greg

RE: Big Swamp Buggy ??'s
Hey guys. Its been a while, but I laid on primer tonight and finally test ran the old K&B .40 that will power the boat. It was quite a relief to see that old mill come to life. Its an engine that my dad and I used on a couple of RC planes some 25 years ago, and I have really been counting on it for this project. The thing was really gunked up and the ring was stuck solid, but it should work just fine for a while, and will make a nice trainer engine for my kids and all the others that show up at the pond when we fire it up. It doesn't look like we will be able to hit the water this weekend, but hopefully the next. Good luck to all-looks like some great projects everyone has on the bench. Greg

RE: Big Swamp Buggy ??'s
Thanks for the quick replies. Things have been cold and snowy here in northern Illinois, and that means alot of extra work for me, hence my lack of participation here. I've done some more research as far as finishing goes, and like the sound of the Topflite LustreKote system. I'm wondering if I can spray LK color, accent with Fascolor (a water based paint for Lexan RC car bodies) and top it all with a gloss LK clear to give it a nice durable shine. I'll have to spray some test panels to be sure it's all compatible. The wood still needs to be sealed before anyting goes on it, and for that I may use Midwest Aerogloss sanding sealer, or equivalent. Not really sure about compatibility with these products though. n8mkr-using epoxy or 'glass resin will certainly yield a bullet proof coating in all respects, but for me they are too heavy and hard to sand. I'm a bit of a perfomance freak, so weight matters alot to me. mjderstine-sounds like a great project. I admire your ambition to start by modifying a kit-I'm just trying to make mine a working example of something that is known to already work. Hope you get into Lipos and brushless for power. Good luck. Is there a tutorial on how to post photos? Greg

RE: Big Swamp Buggy ??'s
Great thread guys-I too am building a BSB. Going to mount the sponson tops and top deck soon. I plan on doing away with the "cockpit" area for the same reasons stated before. No major problems with the build so far, despite the terrible directions supplied by Dumas. Keeping the frame square has provided some issues, but careful clamping and some extra time spent lining things up has worked well. I like the idea of using bondo to fill seems and such-should work as long as there isn't too much flexing of the hull. Which leads me to the question of finishing the boat. After filling and sanding, what are you guys going to use to seal and paint your hulls? An automotive (urethane) system would be ideal, but far to costly in my opinion. After all the effort, I don't want my paint softening because the nitro fuel isn't compatible with the finish. Incidentally, rattle cans would be my second choice, spraying being my prefered method. Thanks, Greg

building a Big Swamp Buggy
I plan on purchasing a Big Swamp Buggy kit in the next week to build with my son and daughter. I've got an old K&B .40 for power and several car radios to choose from. I just went through the engine and cleaned away 25 years worth of accumulated junk-I believe it will run just fine. Over the years I have flown/built planes and helis, and am currently involved with cars, so building the kit shouldn't pose any huge issues. I'd like to hear from members that have built this kit and get their input on it. I would really appreciate any comments, particularly things that other builders have changed. Thanks, Greg
