RE: E Flight Taylorcraft w/Park 450 recomended prop 10x8 is too much?
I had a couple of old 11x6 wood props hanging around and was surprised it fit the electric motor

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Jim, Yep, no doubt that the Syssa will need extensions for the exhaust stacks too. Also note, if you are using the heavy duty .91 and up Dubro #883 pull-pull system be aware that the mounting hole on the rudder needs to be drilled from the bottom of the rudder up at about 1inch or so from the bottom edge of the rudder. The manual says 3/4" and I found out that that was way too low for the heavy duty Dubro #883 pull-pull set-up. I am also upgrading the horns on both elevator halves and each aileron with Dubro #913 Heavy Duty adjustable horns. They come two horn sets per package so if you decide to go this route if you already have not, those are the ones I am using. These are for the .91 and up size aircraft and feature a self leveling mounting base so the horns stay at a 90 degree angle relative the control surface as the surfaces are tapered. Have you recieved your motor yet? Hope this information helps you out. [:D] Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Guys, I have some more to report on my progress. I have completed the pull-pull cable installation on the rudder for SD! I ended up crossing the cables and the geometry worked out very nicely in doing so. No binding and lots of free and easy movement with no servo buzzing or chatter. I crossed the cables only after I tried to install the cable system conventionally which for me was a no go for me. I handled the crossed cables in the fuse by prior to actually crossing the cables I rubber banded together 2 8 inch pieces of push rod guide (blue) from an extra goldenrod set. I slid the push rod pieces down the cables and then hooked up my "crossed" cables. The push rods form an "X" where the cables cross in the fuse there by preventing rubbing. I will work on getting the wheel pants and wheels on next couple of days. I took the extra time tonite to mix up some 30 minute epoxy to coat the interior of the wheel pants as the factory was a little light in thier application of the same. I am also ordering 2 sets of (for the elevator halves and ailerons) Dubro 913 heavy duty adjustable trumpet and horn set-ups. These will match my heavy duty pull-pull cable hardware that is installed on the rudder. With any luck this week I should have the fuse done with the exception of the canopy. I am still debating how to attach the canopy parts as I believe it would be beneficial to have it removable for servicing the interior. I have a question regarding the exhaust. The DLE 35 fits totally within the cowl and the exhaust stacks are not long enough to exit the cowl. Is there available exhaust extensions so I can get the exhaust out of the cowl?? I gotta believe someone makes extensions of some kind for this purpose. Any suggestions?? I will post some pictures shortly, after I complete the fuse. Jim, I hope you are doing ok after losing your pet. Hope to see you on here soon with your SD! Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Jim, I too wish that they had left a hatch access to get at the firewall. I mixxed 30 minute epoxy and literally poured it in and used a brush with an extension handle and brushed on a coating the best I could. This is not optimum or the best procedure but I feel I got a ample amount of epoxy on key firewall connection points. Getting the blind nuts on the lower side of the firewall to accomodate my firewall spacer was a real trick. I did it with a blue pushrod inserted through the hole and thread back to the open "cockpit area". Then I slid the blind nut down the push rod to where it lined up with the hole in the firewall. THIS was very difficult. Finally I got the blinf nut to stick long enough to get a thread started and got them set. This was the hardest part of the build so far. Absolutely you need to cross the Rudder Pull Pull cable. I tried to do it conventionally, and am not happy with the results. I will be replacing the cable tonite and crossing it over. I also picked up a SWB pull-pull tensioner to install so I have a simple way to adjust any slop in the cable. In theory you should be able to install a pull pull pretty simply. I think the size of the plane makes this more difficult. Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Guys, Made great progress tonite. Wing strut fuse mounting braket installed (was hard to do, small area to work in), fuel tank final install complete, motor installed and throttle linkage hooked up and travel adjusted. I used a small ball link on the throttle arm, worked good. Next step is to locate where I want to mount the Rx and get that in along with the rudder servo and pull-pull set up and finally the e;evator half servo's mounted in the tail. Looks like the fuse should be all done toward the end of the week. I still have to figure out where exactly I am going to mount the batteries. I believe in the belly of the middle compartment at about the CG. I will know better once I began to balance the plane next week or so. Upside of crappy flying weather and wife in school means I can work on airplanes in the basement. I will post some pictures again maybe tommorow. Jim has your SD arrived yet? did you get the spinner worked out? My spinner and single bolt prop adapter got here from Valley View today, thanks to Tammy!! Let me know how you are doing Jim in getting your SD!! [:D] Paul

RE: beast oil to use in breaking in a dle 55
I just bought a DLE 35 and I was instructed to run a mix of 32:1 for the first and second gallon through the motor and then 40:1 thereafter. I purchased my motor from Valleyview RC and they recomended that I use Stihl HP Ultra oil mix. So, this is what I will do. I have to think the DLE 55 besides being bigger the recomendation more than likely would be the same. Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
After careful consideration and talking with several other club members and reviewing this thread to death I have decided to place my ignition and Rx switches inside the door of the SD. I took several pictures of what I have come up with. Sorta a power panel set up that if I had to, I could un-bolt and un-plug connections and remove for easy service. Here is what I came up with. The next hurdle will be the throttle servo. I am trying to keep the middle bay as open as possible so I can one day add smoke to the SD and have the room to do it easily and cleanly. Back at it tommorow since the weather report says windy and rain likely. Have a look at the pictures of my progress. [:D] Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Guys, Just talked to our club president and he thought it be a good idea to have the kill switch on the outside of the plane for ease of access. I have already installed the fuel dot on the outside of the plane. So it looks like I will place my Rx switch behind the door and also leave room there for the fuel dot and switch combo I recieved from Valleyview for the future smoke system addition. This plane requires a lot of thoughtfull planning when laying out your equipment. Off to the LHS to pick up a few items for over the weekend. Hopefully the fuel system will be done and the radio install can begin!!! I would like to fly this plane before snow flies this year!! Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Jim, sorry to hear that you are having difficulty with Tru Turn. I am sure you will get it all worked out before not long though. I have been at a slight stand still here due to a busy work schedule etc.. Anyway I was able to get a few minor things accomplished early yesterday and today though. Hopefully I can devote a little more time tonight to finishing the fuel system install and the ignition system install. I am just anal about being able to take things apart after they are assembled for routine maintenance or reparis. I built a slick fuel tank mount that in the end will allow me to slide it out of the fuse since it is on rails for lack of better words. i also painted my firewall and will pick up a bushing for the hole for the ignition wire access to the fuse. Also note, my replacement cowl showed up absolutely A1, not a scratch. Thanks to Mr. Dan Spears and RC Guys!! Any thoughts where I should mount the fuel dot?? Also, I am honing in on my ignition switch location. I am going to mount it on the external of the plane on the fuse so I can get at it easily and quickly without having to clammer to open the door to get at it. I have the optilink which will be in the plane and tied to Aux2. I will mount the Rx and future smoke system switch and fuel dot (this came with the motor) on the inside of the door like cmoulder did with his SD build. Here are a few pic's of what I have done so far. [:D] Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Guys, I am now working on mounting my fuel system and setting up to put my throttle servo in. Being new to gas, I see many folks are removing the idle adjustment screw on their carbs. Is this a good idea or is this just standard operating procedure? Also, what sort of pushroads/connectors are you using for the throttle linkage set-ups? AND what fuel dots and what on/off/charge switches should I use for the 4.8V ignition battery? Jim I am glad you are geeting all set-up for the arrival of your SD. I am still waiting for my cowl replacement from Dan, and am expecting he must of shipped it last week so more than likely I will see it this week sometime. This thread is huge!!! This plane has had a lot of comments and build tips throughout. I really like Cmoulders radio set up which leaves room for smoke someday if I should decide to go that route as it seems like a lot of messing around. What I am finding is you really have to think hard about where to put what in this plane. So far I have decided to keep the rudder pull - pull servo mounted in the cabin and both elevator servo's mounted externally in the tail of the fuse. It seems the throttle servo gets mounted where ever it suits your engine throttle linkage which is on the left upper portion of the engine mount. I still need to order a 3.5" spinner for the plane. Looking like Tru-Turn as well. [:D] Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Guys, After much thought, I used a little bit from everyon'e suggestions. I might say things turned out pretty good! Using the stock standoff's from DLE, I had to add an 11/16" mounting plate to get the proper spacing for the prop hub. I mounted the fuse to a 6' step ladder as shown in the attatched photo's using wood and clamps. This really worked out nice for aligning the motor and cowl. Jim, when you do your build video, you are going to have to change some of the order in which the instruction manual lays out the assembly. I never would of put the tail feathers on had I known what I know now. It would of been much easier to have stood the fuse up against the bench on it's vertical and horizontal stabs less the tail feathers!!! I was up and down a step stool about a gazillion times today/this evening aligning the cowl until I had everything positioned properly!!! Anyway, have a look at the pictures I took as I slogged along with this step in the assembly of my SD. Overall, I am quite happy with the outcome. The spinner back plate I am using is too small, I have to order the proper one next week. I just used it as a guide to check alignment. Onto the next steps!! [:D] Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Sorry you missed this weeks shipment! I wonder if my replacement cowl was in there? I really like the idea of the build video! I got a fuel tank tonight, however, for future reference send me a photo of your fiji tank. That sounds really cool. I never new that tygon grew so I will leave the extra space as you describe. Hopefully your SD gets in soon!! I would be currious what improvements have been made to the basic kit compared to my older "new" kit. Ya gotta post plenty of pictures. I spent the night getting ready to begin the engine install, but got sidetracked tonight over at the LHS. Not entirely bad though!! The DLE looks like a quality engine! I will keep you posted! Paul

Awesome news Jim!!! I recieved my DLE35 today. An excellent turn around time on this 2-1/2 days door to door. Tammy from Valleyview sure did a nice job to see I had this for the long weekend! I will pick up the servo's tommorow. That leaves me a fuel tank, fuel line, spinner and a 4.8 V ignition battery to get yet. Hopefully you have your SD real soon Jim!! I got mine through Chief back in the day. Have you seen the RC Guys Pitts Special?? Wow!! Downstairs to un pack motor and set up to begin its installation. Paul

Scott, Jim is right about these Saito's especially the big ones not working real well with spring loaded fuelers. They will suck air right through them and give you all sorts of grief, do what Jim said and use a fuel dot. Air leaks are our enemy on fuel systems. Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Scott, Yes, you need the Sullivan Glow Driver. You install the panel on you plane preferably in a place that has easy access and in plain sight away from exhaust. You plug your throttle lead from your servo into the Sullivan unit. There is a corrosponding lead on the Sullivan unit that you plug into your throttle channel on your Rx. Then, you need a power source for the glow power. That is where you need the sub-c cell. I had Batteries Plus sell me a 3000 MaH sub-c cell for a couple of dollars. They in turn spot welded two soldering tabs on that battery. In one instance they actually soldered a set of leads onto the battery tabs for me as well. You need to prepare a a set of battery leads for the sub c cell. I believe the sullivan unit comes with a small deans connector on it, with another loose connector for your battery lead. Also be sure to get the ground wire conncted to your motot mount. I just removed a engine mounting bolt and bolted it to the motor, since my motor mount was nylon. 1. The unit has a on off slide switch that has to be on 2. you can choose to turn on the glow driver with another small push button a LED will light (your rx needs to be on) 3. you can program this unit very simple so that it only comes on at whatever low idle stick position you program into the Sullivan, very easy the instructions are real easy. I would turn on the tx, turn on the rx, turn on the Sullivan unit, put my throttle stick at my low idle position and start my motor. Throttle up and the glow driver went off. Come in for a landing and throttle back, the glow driver comes back on and heats the glow plug, preventing most if not all flame outs. These units really are good and easy to use. No more flame outs after i began using them. Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Jim, I Have that flaperon set up on my big Kadet, it comes in handy landing the plane. Stands to reason they would work well on the SD too. You should do a build video. An experienced builder putting together a plane would only serve to help those not so experienced. May save Dan some headaches too!! Scott, I ran Sullivan glow drivers on all my Saito's they are easy to set up so that when you want to start the motor it is on and it will come on at low idle and keep the plug warm. All 4 strokes like to run rich and should. It seems the Saito which I do love as an engine just benefits from a glow driver at the low end real much. I powered the glow driver with a single cell nicad that I charged only a couple of times a year. Put the battery where you can get at it easy. Batteries plus sells them for a couple of bucks I had Batteries Plus spot weld on solder tabs on the battery. Hope this Helps some. Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Well, the LHS called. The Servo's will be in on Friday at noon. If nothing else since we are to get the remainder of Hurricane Isaac this weekend I can work on installing the radio!!! Are there any prefered methods for radi installation on this kit?? i.e. where to mount the reciever. I am going with two servo's in the tail and a program mix with elevator and Aux2 on Pmix 5. I am going to at first try the ailerons on a simple "y" connector, I will use the gear channel for the remote throttle kill switch, then you basic throttle and rudder set ups. This should leave me AUX1 for the future if I want to put smoke on the plane or I could mix that with the aileron's and deploy flaps. However, I understand this plane handles gently on landing so I will do my best to keep her light as possible. Tonight it will be onto the main gear and then onto the ailerons being added to the wings. Still miles to go!! Paul

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Jim, I know the feeling!! I have a H9 27% Edge I would like to sell for real cheap, but presently no takers in the area. I am also going to be un-loading a Saito 1.80 later this year that has been broken in, but never used to fly a plane yet. It was a door prize at a local RC event about 5 years ago!!! I still need to address the spinner as well. Also, have you had any experience with the opto link kill switch that was part of my deal when I ordered in the DLE? I have read that it is powered of a battery pack from 4.8V to 7.4V and that no voltage regulators are necessary as in the "old days". I need to research this and the sullivan smoke system. I am thinking of using a seperate 6V 2700 MaH Nimh pack for the rx and Servo's which I have on hand. The ignition system and possible smoke system will also run on seperate batteries as well. I am in the search/learn mode now on those items. I more than likely will roll the SD out and de-bug and get use to before I entertain adding smoke. Good luck with your repairs on the GSS.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Guys, I called Valley View RC and Tammy informed me that the DLE35RA is on its way priority mail as of today noon Pacific Coast Time. I think it will get here to Wisconsin by Friday...hopefully! I got a chance to go out and fly tonight I had the H9 RV-8 for its first flight, so I was only able to complete the tail feathers and install the tail wheel assembly on the SD. The tail wheel actually is pretty well put together and looks like it will do the job. I plan on getting the main gear on tomorrow less the wheel pants since I am going to have to stand this plane up against a ladder to get the motor/cowl alignment right. I can put the wheel pants on much later. The elevator seems a little stiff and has a slight imbalance between up and down. I have the joint tight, so there is a very small margin between the stab and elevator. I think this will work itself in. I cleaned out the joint with denatured alcohol and then added a drop of light oil to each hinge pin. I will just keep working it I believe it will be ok. The servos are not in yet either, I ordered Hitec 5645's for each control surface. I hope this wasnt overkill! Here are a couple of pictures of the SD as of tonight. [:D]

Is there a good thread that goes through the basic adjustments/RPM ranges do's and dont's with the DLE engines?? Valleyview suggests the Stihl 2 cycle oil mix and suggest 32:1 to begin with. RE: New DLE 35
Guys, I just ordered my DLE 35 today!! Should have it this week before the long holiday weekend. Hopefull I will have it installed and be ready to test run it. From what I was told is they recomend the Stihl HP Ultra Oil mix at 32:1 for the break in period. After which I can adjust to 40:1 mix. It is encouraging to hear that this little engine should run right out of the box and requires only a small amount of carb adjustment to get it right. I am placing this engine in an RC Guys Super Decathlon. It sounds like 19-8 is the prop of choice for this engine from what I have read in this thread. I am thinking several tanks of 32:1 through the motor on the ground then running it in by flying it around on the remainder of that gallon. After i expend the first gallon will it be safe to move up to a 40:1 mix like they suggest. Any input here would be greatly appreciated. Paul
