LIPO'S and minimum discharge voltage
I would like to know what the minimum discharge voltage is, I have heard everything from 3.1 to 3.4 volts per cell to avoid early battery damage.... what is the story? Thanks!

I think you may have an ignition problem, when warm it does not work correctly.

Anyone using Eneloop batteries for ignition? Wonder how these work for Ign and also wondering if they are good enough for flight packs?

RE: Scuffed high tension lead
Probably you are ok with 80% of the shield intact. If that engine uses a resistor spark plug, that reduces the chances of interference more so, even with a damaged woven metal shield.

Peak power RPM, how good is the fit?
I have a suspicion that on our bigger two stoke engines say 80 CC and up, most of the engines we use on our planes produce their peak power at a higher RPM than we usually run them, of course the exhaust system has a lot to say about that. I wonder if a change in port timing (and possibly other changes) would benefit some of the engines, that is bring down the peak power point to the low 6000 RPM range, where it could be better utilized. I would bet that a lot of the engines peak at 7000 RPM or better. Since many of the engines we use have major parts in them that come from engines not designed for R/C some of the manufacturers are probably handicapped as far as changing things too much. Just changing the exhaust port timing can really move the power curve around.

RE: Is it going lean ?
If you want to know if it is running lean in the air you can use a data recorder and check engine temp. With some practice you will find you can tell something about how the engine is set by listening to it. Just like the guys said it is like learning code it takes some time, I copy CW at 35 words a minute but it took quite a while to get to that speed, AB9K

Bearing preload
Maybe this has been discussed before but I could not find a thread..... So February Model Aviation has an article on how to buy a used engine and in it the author states that if the bearings have been changed the bearing preload must be removed after assembling an engine, this is done by heating the case ( he does not say where exactly or if in the front or back bearing area ) and tapping the crankshaft with a hammer or mallet, he says "this will snap the bearing into place." Is this always necessary? Can you tell by feel while rotating the crankshaft if this needs to be done? Wondering if those here who rebuild engines go through this procedure or maybe some other procedure to "align" the bearings after putting them in the case?

Carburetor improvements?
What would you like to see in features for an R/C carburetor that we do not have now, or something that we have but needs improvement? I would like to see a three needle low, mid and high range adjustment capability. Would also like to see a priming function that pulls fuel to the carburetor and wets the carb. throat for fast easy starting even if the engine has not been for for a while, something like what you see on some weed eaters ETC. but improved. Maybe an accelerator pump but not sure that would always be needed and in some cases might be over kill. Also (and some older non R/C carbs. had this) the regulator diaphram atmospheric area internally vented to the air intake throat. Ideas?

RE: Photos of how to replace ignition cap??
The resister greatly reduces the "ringing" of the high voltage path from the coil to the plug, this ringing is what causes the R.F. generation, the resistor does effect the ignitions characteristics, mostly reducing the duration of the spark. The old booster gap was fairly effective in reducing plug fouling in some engines that were prone to it, the availability of modern oils that produce less deposits eliminated the need for the booster gap for the most part. The introduction of Capacitive Discharge ignitions systems with their very fast secondary voltage rise time did more than anything in reducing plug fouling in 2 stroke engines, Capacitive Discharge systems tend to produce more R.F. interference that older type of ignitions which is why more shielding is required when using them in close proximity of radio equipment.

RE: New DLE 55 always dies on taxi.
You may be idling at too low a speed in an effort to prevent it rolling on the hard surface, try increasing the idle RPM a bit and put some drag on the wheels and see if it keeps running.
