Dynam Skybus AKA DC-3
I have just about finished assembling my Dynam DC-3. I wanted to do a model of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad's first corporate plane in 1955. It is covered in white, blue and chrome Oracal film. I added flaps, nav and landing lights and a steerable tail wheel. Now if spring would just get here so I can see it in the air! RE: Parkzone North American T-28 Trojan
I started with the dark gray and blue Air Force version. I did use some automotive spray-can gray primer over the dark blue areas, I don't think I primed the entire airplane, but it won't hurt. The Testors paint didn't eat any foam on my plane, and I have used it on bare foam on other planes. It dries pretty quick. Try it on an area you won't see after the plane is finished to make sure. I paint my planes like any other models, several light coats to achive the color desired, rather than one or two heavy coats which would likely have runs. Give primer time to dry completely before covering it, and give paint time to at least get tacky before the next coat. Jim

RE: Parkzone North American T-28 Trojan
Yes, the silver is Metallic. I would think about any metallic silver would do. The landing gear covers are by Robart, I think I got mine at Hobbyzone.com but anyone that carries Robart landing gear should have them. They just go on over the original wire landing gear. They are plastic and light weight. I also wnt with slightly bigger wheels to help with grass take offs. You can find good photos of the real plane, as well as other good looking T-28s here http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?codesearch=91592/TL-592&distinct_entry=true Jim
ORIGINAL: ka9fax thank you jim for the good info. i just called my lhs and everything was in stock but the silver he has is a matellic silver. the number is 28141 he thinks thats the right one because he said none of his paint slots are missing but i wanted to ask u before buying. also were did u get the kool gear? it really gives a nice scale look. i also hv alot of the blue tape, but im not going to take a chance, ill get the frog... merry christmas tony
RE: Parkzone North American T-28 Trojan
I used Testors Model Master Laquer in the 3 oz spray cans. For this plane I used Hemi Orange, Chrysler Yellow and AMC Sterling Silver. I have also used Krylon spray paint on foam planes with pretty good success. You will likely have to prime any area you removed decals, since the original paint will come off with the decal, I use a good automotive light gray, but I have also used Krylon and it is okay. I try to leave as much original paint as I can as primer. I wipe down anything I'm going to spray paint with some rubbing alcohol to remove oil and dirt. I use green Frog tape for masking and I stick it to something like my shirt to remove some sticky before using it. Getting paint to stick to foam is a challenge and this tape is the only kind I have found that won't pull off the original paint or primer I have applied. There are some folks here that have created much better looking planes than I, so I am no expert. This is just how I do mine. Good Luck Jim
ORIGINAL: ka9fax Hi Jim, Great looking bird!!!!!!!!! just wondering if u would tell me the paint color's u used, i know u said Testors brand. also did u repaint the whole wing and fuse? Also if u can give me any tips on how u painted it as far as masking and 1st few steps. This will be my 1st paint job and not to sure what to look out for. reason im asking is i crashed two planes due to them blending in with sky, the plane flys so well i keep rebuilding, i always want to keep one in my hanger. So mabe if i go with this yellow. i will see better. thanks for your time Tony
RE: Parkzone North American T-28 Trojan
I haven't put a watt meter on it, so I can't tell you exactly how the 3 blade does on power consumption, but I think it is generally agreed 3 blade props shorten flight times, so I just plan on five minutes and land. What I like is the 3 blade prop makes more thrust and seems to give the plane better slow speed manners, which helps on landing. I haven’t noticed the motor or ESC getting hot, so I don’t think it is stressing them any at all. Jim By the way, I have ordered the FMS 1400 mm T-28, I plane to paint it the same.
ORIGINAL: rsbabcock Love the colors. How does the 3 blade prop perform compared with the stock 2 blade. I love my T-28s. I have both Navy and Air Force along with many other planes, both nitro and electric. I fly t-28 more than all others combined. Anyone have problems securing the battery? I have had trouble with one of mine with the battery shifting forward and causing a severe nose heavy balance problem.
RE: Official Hobby Zone
I'm using a 2200 3 cell battery. I cut the top of the battery box open, just big enough to slide the battery vertically up and through the top of the battery compartment. I cut the opening at the front of the box so the battery is as far forward in the fuselage as I can get it. Make the opening snug and it will hold the battery in place well, but I did move the Velcro strap to the front of the compartment for added security. I have an extra battery box, I will take some photos of the mod and post them later. Jim

RE: Official Hobby Zone
The Fun Cub doesn't utilize struts, the wing has two fiberglass spars, one long, one short to give the wing strength. It feels plenty strong to me, but I don't plan to be doing any hard aerobatics other than short take offs and landings. The Fun Cub wing is a bit thicker than the HZ wing, but I'm sure you could use the HZ struts if you want the insurance or apperance. I'm leaving them off for now because it frees up space for camera mounting options. Thanks Jim

RE: Official Hobby Zone
This is my latest Super Cub project. It uses a wing from a Multiplex Fun Cub, so I get the benefit of a seven inch larger wing, plus ailerons and flaps. I made the usual wing saddle and battery box strengthening mods and added 3 inch wheels. It is powered by an E-flite Park 480 with a 40 a ESC spinning a MAS 10X5X3 prop. I painted it neon red and white, with the fuselage covered in Econokote. I didn't follow any prototype, just wanted something easy to see. My goal is not more speed, rather better short take off and landing ability and more lift so I can attach a camera to the plane. RE: Official Hobby Zone
Well, I maidened my parts built HZ Super Cub this evening. The plane has a new E-flite Park 450, 30amp ESC and running a MAS 10X5 prop. I covered it with yellow Econokote and used Callie Graphics decals to match a photo of an old Army SC. When I first launched the plane I thought something was wrong with it. It wanted to pitch nearly straight up. I managed to get it level and finally figured out it is just ridiculously overpowered and flies great at about 1/3 throttle! At anything over ½ throttle, it just wants to climb out of sight. Thanks to everyone here that provided info and pointers on this upgrade and build. The first shot is the new SC sitting next to my old original, all stock SC. Jim

Econokote on foam?
I just finished covering my HZ Super Cub with Econokote and I am very happy with the results. This is my first time covering a plane. The plane looks great, much better than my attempts to paint foam, and I don't have to worry about the paint peeling off if I want to put a bit of tape or a decal on the plane. Even better, I don't get bits of paint on my hand when I carry the plane. Now I am considering using Econokote on my Parkzone Wildcat. My question is, has anyone else tried using Econokote on a foam plane with panel lines, and can you get the covering to shrink enough to allow the lines to be seen? Thanks for any help. Jim

RE: Official Hobby Zone
Thanks for the info. I flew the Cub this evening. It handled okay, but just didn't seem to have as much power as before the new gear box. And at full throttle it is noisy. Perhaps the motor shaft is bent. So I plan to order the upgraded motor, mount and ESC. What prop are you using with that set up. I really don't want to go faster, though better climbing might be fun. I have been using 9X6 props from various makers since I got the Cub, they all seem pretty much the same, With the power upgrade, would moving to a 10X6 give better climb? Jim

Hi folks, My Cub was damaged in a crash, to the point that I had to order a new gear box. Now the plane seems to make some gear noise in didn't before. I am pretty sure everything is lined up right and all the nuts bushings and washers are in the right place. Should I lube the gears and shaft? If so, what should I use? Thanks Jim

RE: Parkzones New Warbird F4F Wildcat
I primed the whole plane with Valspar gray primer from Lowes, and the colors are Testors Model Master spray cans. The tricky part of the whole deal is not removing paint with masking tape when you are masking for a second color. I would take strips of blue 3M tape and stick them to my shirt before using them to reduce the adhesive. This helped, but I still had to touch up a few spots where the paint pulled off with the tape. Just work slow and be ready to do at least some touch up work. Now, starts the repaint on my Trojan. I didn't crash it, I just want a paint scheme with a little more color. Jim

RE: Parkzones New Warbird F4F Wildcat
The paint and body work is done. The plane is back together with new servos and ESC installed. I am waiting on the new motor to arive and it will be complete. I also plan to add the Park Flyer Plastics cowl, canopy and drop tanks when they arrive. I know the paint isn't perfect and I used the "it looks close" method of scaling stripes and lettering. But it should be easier to see and it doesn't look like every other Parkzone Wildcat. Jim

Foil covering, reception inhibitor?
I have a friend who is contemplating covering a foam parkflyer with aluminum tape used on HVAC duct work. He is looking for a more bare metal look than he can get with paint. Any ideas regarding how this may affect reception? He is flying with a Spektrum 5 ch TX and his plane is a Parkzone with a Spektrum receiver. Thanks for any insight. Jim

RE: Noob (me) with a Parkzone P-47 - to fly or not to fly?
As a fellow newb I can tell you the smartest thing I did, after reading comments from veterans here and talking to the folks at WV Hobbies, was start out on a Hobbyzone Super Cub. Easy to put together, easy to fly and best of all, easy to repair. After a month or so with the Cub, I felt comfortable getting a T-28 and, so far, have had good luck with it. Funny thing is, I still really enjoy flying the Cub. It is slow, predictable and relaxing. Pick up a Super Cub, or some other high wing trainer and get the feel for actually flying. You will be glad you did. And, you will appreciate the speed and agility of the P-47 even more after flying a good trainer. Jim

RE: Parkzones New Warbird F4F Wildcat
Got a new E-flite 30 a ESC and hooked it up, turned out the motor is screwed up. It will turn when you give it throttle, but it grinds like it is full of rocks or something. I'm beginning to think the crash may not have been my fault after all. With the blood on the plane and the motor messed up, I think there is at least a slight chance I hit something making the plane go down. Yeah, I know it's a long shot and the plane is still messed up, but if I can tell myself MAYBE, just maybe, I didn't cause the crash, then I feel a little better about investing the money to repair the plane. And, as long as I have it apart, I'm going to repaint it into the pre war yellow wing VF41 scheme so I can see it better. I’m also thinking about creating a landing gear dolly that will give the appearance of gear down, and can be used for take offs, but will drop off on lift off similar to what the Germans used on their early jets and rocket planes. I‘ll still have to land in the grass, but it will give me an option for display and take offs and be cheaper than the retracts that are out there. Photos when I'm done. Jim

RE: Parkzones New Warbird F4F Wildcat
I plugged a fresh battery into the Wildcat and the ESC started smoking. I unplugged the battery immediately and removed the ESC from the plane. I guess having the battery connected to it for so long was more than it could take. I need to replace it now, should I get a bigger ESC, like a 30 amp, or just stay with the 18 amp that came in the plane. I'm just asking in case I want to use a bigger prop or make some other upgrades to the plane at a later date. Jim

RE: Parkzones New Warbird F4F Wildcat
I flew my Wildcat Sunday evening and it went down into a very tall tree. I was about 100 feet up and 300 feet away making a right turn when the plane just seemed to dive down into the trees. Since I haven't been flying very long I assume I made a mistake. I was flying at about 50% throttle when this happened so I am thinking I banked too much and lost lift. At that height, I perhaps may have recovered, but I happened to be over a 80 foot tree at the time. I was debating if I should leave it there, or hire a buddy I know that cuts trees for a living to climb up and get it, but it was windy Monday and the plane fell to a much lower group of branches and I was able to recover it today. Overall there is very little damage, nothing some glue and paint won't fix. The plane has a pretty good size nick in the prop and blood down one side of the fuselage. It looks like it hit a big bug or small bird. I didn't see it hit anything while flying, but that far away I may not have seen the impact. Could that account for the dive into the trees? Also, since the battery was plugged into the reciever for three days, should I try to charge it or right it off? Jim

RE: Official Hobby Zone
I have had it a little over a month now and I really enjoy flying this plane. Hobbyzone may have single-handedly made me an RC airplane enthusiast. Even taking into account the fact that it is a 3 ch "beginners" plane, it is just plain fun to fly. I have repainted mine into a yellow U. S. Army scheme from the '50s and added nav lights by Ramtech. I have picked up a couple of 4 ch planes, but this is still my favorite, just because it is easy and relaxing to fly. This is a shot my wife took yesterday evening. Jim

RE: Newbee Propeller question?
Thanks Chocks and Chris, that does help. I am pretty sure the Master Airscrew is likely a step up in quality over the plastic prop that came on the planes. They do look a little more to scale and improve the appearance of the planes. Even if they just fly as well as with the original prop, I'm still ahead. Thanks Jim

Newbee Propeller question?
I have read and basically understand the trade offs in speed vs power that comes with changing prop size and/or pitch. And I understand the risk of overheating and hurting parts of the plane. However, I am curious about using after market props of the same size as original on my planes. I picked up a Master Airscrew 9X6 prop for electric planes for my HZ Super Cub and PZ Wildcat. These planes both came with 9X6 props. But the new prop looks much thinner than the stock 9X6, so before i tried it on either plane I was wondering if there is enough of a difference to worry about or can I use any 9X6 prop that will fit the shaft on the plane? Thanks Jim
