RE: Rib stitch and tape over Koverall
Tony, I use Ploycrylic to fill the weave of the fabric then I add my stitches and tapes. I use stitches from cablerock that was listed earlier and tapes from Gary at Pink-It.net. With the polyC you do not want to try and dope tapes down over the polycrylic. You will need to use tapes cut for Solartex. I do prefer to paint my planes so for me the color is not an issue. I also put several coats of polycrylic on over the tapes after they have been ironed down and lightly sand. This gives the tapes a more scale appearance IMO. I am going to try and attach a few pics showing the method I use. If you want to see more let me know. In the pic of the finished plane you can see the stitching detail on the bottom of the wings. RE: Big JN-4 Jenny for Electric Power
Terry, I have the Proctor Jenny plans and I have blown them up 200% to 1/3 scale. The plans are incredible and would make a really nice big Jenny. It is on my to do list one of these days. At 1/3 scale it is like 174" span. Later!! Anthony

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Thanks VJ, We really like the field. We all take turns mowing and keeping the grounds up. We have a Father's Day Fly-In each year and have numerous clubs come out for the event. Last year we had 50 pilots and we are hoping for more this year. I will get some good pics to post. Later!! Anthony

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build
ORIGINAL: rkcruit Hey Waco, In your experience, will polycrylic adhere koverall to a surface primed with Rustoleum? When I try to use dope or Stix-it on my William Wallace gear to stick the edges of the Koverall, it bubbles up the primer. I guess it's because they're both laquer based? Any suggestions? Thanks for your help. Ken
Sorry didn't see the post earlier. I never use Rustoleum primer, always Dupli-Color primer. I have never had a compatibility issue with the Dupli-Color primer. RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Hi Chuck, The Waco is much more massive than the Cub for sure. Glad the dead stick was a non issue for your Cub. Our club rents property on a pheasant farm and they have a 3,000ft grass strip. We use the last 600ft and mow it down short for the models. We can always use the other 2400ft if needed. Nice to have it there just in case. The tall grass can be tough on small models but 1/3 scale planes can handle it without too much trouble. Later!! Anthony

Thanks David, I detailed the props. The one on the Waco is a 32x12 Menz prop. The prop on the Cub is a 22x8 Xoar. A little paint and a soldering iron is all it takes to do the detailing. Later!! Anthony

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
I went flying today and the Waco made it's debut at the field. I did not fly the Waco but did run the engine and performed taxi test. The engine ran really well and temps did not seem to be an issue. After several test runs on the runway and running at idle for several minutes one cylinder was at 217 deg and the other was at 234. I think these temps will be lower in the air. If all goes well weather wise the Waco will get flown next weekend. I did get the Cub up for a few flights and the new engine performed well. It is really a nice flying plane. Here are a few pics from the field today. Everyone at the field likes the Waco. Later!! Anthony

Bravo Robert, Looks like you are gaining ground on it. I have my Waco, 1/3 Cub and Contender loaded up in the trailer for tomorrow. The Waco will just be getting some taxi test and running the engine to make sure all is well with it. Hopefully next weekend will be the big day for the Waco. Later!! Anthony

RE: 1/3 Scale Nieuport 11
Hi jeffo, One of those stupid builder mistakes. When I assembled the plane I noticed the rudder horn bolts barely caught into the nut plate on the back side. I told myself I needed to pick up some longer bolts and replace them before flying. Well after about 10 flights on the DRI it happened. I had forgot to replace the bolts and the plane started acting funny in the air, started doing slight flat turns with no inputs. I immediately turned down wind to set up for landing and about the time I went to turn on crosswind the plane snapped and spun in from about 150-200ft. The rudder horn had pulled loose and the rudder went full left. The results was a tight spin that was uncontrollable. All I could do was chop the throttle and wait for the impact. I thought about rebuilding the plane but decided against it. I had to rebuild my Waco and that was enough. I was very hard on planes last year. The engine was not damaged and I am using it in a 30cc Stick. The N-11 will make a nice WWI replacement. I watched Art fly his last year and it is a nice flying plane for sure. Later!! Anthony

RE: WACO YMF
Oh another thing, with a twin in these round cowls you may find a need to modify the muffler canisters to fit within the cowl. I had to cut and modify the canisters on my plane as well. The twins do seem to run smoother and have a better sound so the extra work to get them installed is worth it. Later!! Anthony

RE: WACO YMF
Hi Dan, Don't know if you have decided on an engine yet. The DLE-60 twin may be a good option. It is 8.5" wide not including the spark plugs and caps. The 3W twin I have in my 1/3 is a tight fit as well. The spark plugs and caps line up with the cowl blisters and gives me enough clearance. I have approx. 1/4" clearance inside the blisters. Here is a link to the engine at tower with the dimensions. [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCPZB&P=0]DLE-60 Twin[/link] Maybe you can find someone here on RCU that has that engine and they can get you the dimension for plug cap to plug cap. Enjoy the build. Anthony

RE: 1/3 Scale Nieuport 11
Hi Guys, I have a copy of Art's plans and will start building this winter. Just took a quick glance at the plans looks pretty straight forward to build. I lost my 1/4 DRI last summer and I think this will fill the spot nicely. Later!! Anthony

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build
SDP, I made a set for my 1/3 from Black Nylon. I do not have to worry about O-rings as my gear has springs so I used 1/16" elastic cord sewed into the ends to tie it to the gear legs. The nylon is flexible enough to give it a more scale look on the gear. Later!! Anthony

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build
I had Dubro foam filled tires on my 1/4 Cub and they did fine but I was always flying from grass. I also have them on my 1/3 Cub. I have my planes loaded in the trailer and I will be spending the day at the field. I haven't flown the 1/3 Cub for about 2 months, time to get some air under it wings. Later!! Anthony

RE: Top Flite Mini-Contender
Good to know the rudder did not fully correct the issue, If I get the electric version I will modify the tips and build a new rudder. My Contender is a really nice flying plane and everyone at the field comments on how well it fly's. I have let a couple of the guys take their turn on the sticks and everyone is pleased with how it handles. Later!! Anthony

RE: SIG Horz. Datum Line
Bill I am not saying don't ask, asking is how you learn. You can't read too much into what is typed. You can't take everything as literal. Like (" You tend to get a bit a head of yourself though") I don't think GB meant you literally he meant you as in everyone tends to get ahead of themselves in a build. (God knows I still do) You were given a very precise explination of what the datum line is at expense of GB time and effort. When you simply rely on text at conveying a message you do not get the depth of feel that you get with a verbal conversation and the full intent of the conversation. The comment stated above was a generalization that was not meant to be slanderous or mailicious in any way. It is knind of like is a glass half empty or half full. Good Luck!! Anthony
