RE: Retracts For HOB's
Hi Steve, I can't help you with your retract question, but I'd love to hear about your build. Do you have any pics? Very interested in this line of kits. Tower doesn't seem to have them in stock anymore.

RE: Balsa USA 1/6 Scale Thomas-Morse S-4C Scout Build Thread
Is an OS 52 FS to big for this kit? (I was given the engine from a friend). This is my first choice but I'm afraid it might stick out. I've read a few threads on the 1/6 Pup and they seem to have no problem with the 52. This one looks a little cramped up front. My birthday is coming up and I need to know which one to tell the old lady. Thanks!

RE: Guillows planes ?
ORIGINAL: jollyroger Personally, I wouldn't even look at a Guillows kit. They are all crap. Lousy wood, printed patterns that don't match and they are totally outdated. Not worth it in my book...total junk! If you want to build a small kit try Mountain Models, Manzano Laser Works, Radical RC, Warbird kits, Stevens Aeromodel just to name a few. You will be more than pleased with the outcome of the build. They all use CAD and laser cutting which make for an easier build with great flying characteristics. Don't buy Guillows crap.
Jee wiz. Kinda harsh. I probably built half of the line of Guillows kits growing up. There were not many alternatives at the time. I built a few Sterlings and Comets, but as I recall the Sterlings were not die cut. Most I flew with varying degrees of success, many hung from the ceiling because I had to many hours in them to give them a toss. I guess folks that didn't like them just couldn't build. Yup, you have to build these things. I had a blast with these models, and learned much. Enjoy

RE: spray paint silkspan?
I used silkspan on my 1/2a bombshell. I dyed the silkspan, covered in thinned clear, then painted the black with Sig dope. Thinned about 50/50. I used a cheappie detail sprayer I got at Harbor Freight for about $15 and borrowed my neighbor's compressor. I was very happy with the results.

RE: 3 ch to 4ch.??????
I started on a 3 ch Kadet and now also fly a 4 ch Carl Goldberg Freedom 20. For me, the biggest issue is remembering to use my left thumb to steer on the ground with the 4 channel and my right thumb with the 3. I have drifted off the runway more than once before realizing I needed to use the other thumb!

I'm not sure your microlite is fuelproof. Check around, or test it first. I used coverlite and liked it very much. Easy to apply using basla rite, light, fuel proof, and takes paint nicely. http://www.coverite.com/covering/covq1800.html

RE: Kadetito
Hi carlosam. Sorry for the slow response. I was up north visiting family and swinging by Gettysburg on the way home (awesome). My Kadetito finished up at 23 oz. (with everything). I used Hitec 81 servos for the control surfaces, and a Hitec 55 for the throttle. The engine and muffler are heavy (3.4 oz), so I mounted the servos aft. I was able to dial in the CG by simply moving the battery around. Plenty of room inside to do what you want with servos, etc. I flew this morning and the 6 X 4 is okay. I will try a 7 X 3 (if it doesn't over heat the motor). So far I like the 6 X 3 better. I think I will hand launch next time with the 6 X 4. She wallowed into the sky when I took off from the paved runway. Once airborne, she was fine. I would re-think the aileron idea. This plane (just like her bigger sisters) doesn't need it. I guess if you used a bigger engine it might be fun. With the .07 she handles and responds nicely with just rudder and elevator. If you do add them, then knock some dihedral out like you indicated. I have found it harder and harder to find spruce locally. I used bass wood for the outside stringers, and balsa for everything else. I did the same on the wing. Bass wood longerons and balsa on everything else. I also beefed up the gear with oak, and thicker ply. My landings still make the guys chuckle. Regards, Mike

RE: Kadetito
Thanks for all the kind words and guidance guys! I finally got her into the air this morning. bolar is right, she flies just like the big one. I lucked out and remembered I forgot the servo arm screws as I was about to land, but they held on (lesson learned). The TT .07 is a good match for this plane... nice throttle response, but not much high end. Pretty much what you want in this airframe. It was probably a bit to windy (I just couldn't stand it though) and I busted the prop on my second flight. I have a 6 X 4 I will try. Thanks again for all the help!!

RE: Why this is the best hobby in the world
ORIGINAL: Charlie P.
ORIGINAL: lopflyers Im a medical doctor so I'm a little more educated than most people and still the perils of RC planes are slowing getting in my memory bank. And then you use a Dremel tool to lop off a bit of extra bolt and, even though you made a cardboard shield, it bounces and lands on the wing and melts through top and out the bottom covering before your eyes.  Always learning . .  .new cuss words. RE: Are all RC forum's activity in decline?
ORIGINAL: JPMacG I think every possible RC subject has already been discussed ad nauseam. There is just not much left to talk about. In the early days I found RC Online / Universe tremendously helpful. I still love to build and fly, but I don't have much new to discuss online. I perceive a similar decline in other forums that I visit... bikeforums.org, qrz.org, subaruforester.org. I suspect fourm participation is generally declining. People have become saturated. And also, I do think the RC Aircraft hobby is declining in general. The generation that loved aviation is dying off. The younger generations do not have the same connection to flight.
Holy Cow. Really? There is a web site were guys (and gals I guess) get together to talk about their Japanese made SUV? Amazing.

RE: Kadetito
I finished her up tonight. Balances well and came in at 23 oz. I tried to crunch the numbers and the wing loading seems about 2/3 that of my Kadet Senior. The Senior weighes about 8 lbs (I had to add 9 oz of lead to the nose of the Senior). No excuses, I will try to get her in the air this weekend. Any last minute advice bolar? [;)]

RE: Kadetito
I tried to get her done this weekend but it has been pouring non-stop since Friday. I really just need to paint and put it all together. I also got held up on the worst part of any build for me. Getting the @#$%@^ control horn to lineup with the back plate. [:@] I will use this Coverlite again. It goes on pretty easily and seems very light. The paint adds more weight than I would have guessed so I think I'll be over my 1 1/2 lb target. Hopefully I'll know soon.

RE: FM-2 Widcat LG 1983 March MAN
Good luck with that. I've had the plans for about 15 years and pull them out every once in awhile. I just shake my head and roll them back up. My brother has access to a CNC machine so I think we could make the parts for the gear....it's the fuselage that I don't get. No longerons, etc. Once you get started, please keep us posted. I'd love to see how you progress.

RE: Kadetito
Silk was definitely my first choice, but I tried like heck on a 1/2a bombshell last year and failed miserably. I finished it in silkspan and it came out great, but i kept poking holes in it. I am pleased with the way this coverlite is coming out. I think I added less than two ounces to the total weight, and it seems a bit more sturdy than the silkspan.

RE: Kadetito
The Balsarite I just bought is VERY thick. I guess I expected it to be similar to dope. I added some laquer thinner until it got thin enough to brush on. I tested a piece on the "heavy" wing it seemed to come ocut okay. I picked up a 350 mAh aaa 4.8v receiver pack to save a few ounces. Will that be enough for an 8 or 10 minute flight around the field? My aa 4.8v 600 mAh will fit, but I'd love to save the two ounces. Trying to add pics but getting goofy errors......

RE: Kadetito
I'm getting close to starting to cover. I still have a few little things to finish up first. That .07 with the muffler is heavy so I mounted the servos as far back as I dared. With just about everything on the airframe except the pushrods for the throttle and nose wheel steering, and covering, the fuse is 15.5 oz. The wing is 3.5, so I thing I'll be at my target if the covering isn't to heavy. I'm going to use Coverlite and have no experience with it...so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I know it's screaming for silk, but I haven't had any luck with that lately, I didn't think silk span would be strong enough.

RE: Kadetito
Ouch. I think I'll miss 1 lb 7 oz. Heck, I'm not even using ailerons. I can't help myself, epoxy, supports, reinforcements. Not sure how i got so heavy.... This is what I meant about the wings. The wing in the foreground is the first one I built per plans. It is very strong but it is heavy and doesn't have the "bones" of the Kadet. I built the one in the background over the Kadetito plans, but used the framework design of the Senior. It is definitely not as solid, but should be solid enough (I hope), and weighs 4 oz lighter. Also, the plans wing is so stiff, I doubt I'd be able to get the washout the plans calls for. I get what you mean about rubber bands for the wings. Everything I have ever built had rubber bands for the wings... Gentle Lady Sig Riser 1/2a Buzzard Bombshell 1/2a Delaire Sportster Kadet Senior Carol Goldburg Freedom 20 I guess I'll wait until I build a kit with bolts and learn from there.
