help with mix digital servos / a123 batt.
i have some brand new futaba S9252 servos that I wanted to use with my new vanquish. All the other servos are 6.0. I want to go to a A123 rx batt system. Is there a regulator out there that will accomadate this and with the 6.0v servos would that cause a problem with them. Hate to have to order another two servos. budget getting a little tight. i am considering using a123 or life batteries for my rx and tx. I notice that all the rx a123 batteries are 6.6 volts. Will this cause a problem on my digitial servos that only go to 6.0 v? Also, I know they have a123 life batteries for tx but I have not found any in the 7.6 range or that will fit in my Airtronics SG-10. I have a cellpro charger and found a place where I can charge do a single charge thru the switch. Any help will greatly be appreciated.

RE: Bullet Connector Size
i noticed tewalker stated he liked the one that were gold plated. That is fine on the male to female plug end, but for soldering where you solder the leads, it is not good. Why; if you do not pre-tin that gold tab, then the gold gets in the the solder jitand actually makes the solder joint brittle, which can make it fail due to vibration, shock, or it will become a high resistance point in the joint and over time cause that joint to go bad. So, always pre-tin any gold connector you are planning to solder too.

RE: Sad News for District 7
Hi Jarvis, I am truly sad that we lost chuck. Here was a guy who, who not only was a fixture but set a good example. I never heard him complain or bitch about anything, he just loved to fly and challenged all of us to fly the best we can. He was a credit to NSRCA Dist. 7. RE: Airtronics SD10G for pattern
HI Gang, People ask if this transmitter is easy to set up. ABSOLUTELY the easiest there is and I can prove it!.. I was at a contest a day early getting the feel for the field get everything tuned for the next day, and when I dd my flight check, i had a senior moment when I checked my ailerons. So, start take off, and just after 2meters high I go to turn left and the plane goes right!... First you say it then you do it oh POOP!!!!!! Well, I fly sportsman and just going into imtermediate, so I was able to think backwards, or for me forwards, and got the plane up and was yelling for help ( almost dumped the plane twice!!)..... one of the master pilots took over and got the plane high. I said I can change the setting in 3-5 secons are we high enough,, he said yes, I did it in no more than 3 seconds, and "Viola" the plane was healed!!!!.. the masters pilot flew the plane in and I put the plane in the pits and profusily thannked that pilot for saving my plane. HI Chris, Just a comment; On my manual it states you cannot charge the stock battery thru the radio with anything but the stock charger it came with. therefore, to use any other charger you have to charge the battery outside the xmitter. Wayne Lovett

BLUE MAX Challenge for Pattern Contests
This year at Ontario Ca, I came up with an idea to add more fun to our contests and allow more interaction between classes. I bounced this off some top flyers (Jerry Bud, Rusty Fried, Derek K (our fearless NSRCA President) and they thought it was a good idea. I have sent this to Derek for his review and commication to the other districts. I am sure it can be modified and improved and that is up to each district, but the benefit from my opinion will really enhance fellowship within the classes. NSRCA Blue Max Challenge Purpose: This challenge is set up to allow more interaction between the three lower classes, “Sportsman, “Intermediate, and “Advance, with the “Masters and “FAI Classes. It allows for fun, adds another element of competition to each event (and the season), that all can participate in and have a chance to win. How it Works: The challenge mostly happens on at the end of the day Saturday. (because Sunday you have people that have a long drive back home and probably would not participate as much). I estimate only 30 minutes at the most would be required and I know everyone would want to watch (Can you spell “Pressure). The CD would announce “Blue Max Challenge anyone? At that point, any Pilot from the lower classes can challenge. (Preferably one from each class) a “Masters or “FAI pilot to fly the “Challengers sequence and be judged and scored for that flight. (The CD can allow more than three challenges if the group is ok with it). This score will be matched against the best score the “Challenging Pilot flew for that day. (Note if the district is using handicaps that can be added in, if not, then the best score wins). The CD’s will announce the winners of the Challenges. NOTE: if the “Masters or “FAI refuses the challenge the lower sequence pilot wins the challenge, unless there is a reasonable excuse (having technical problems endangering the plane). (NOTE: It would be my hope that the “Masters and “FAI pilots take this as a way to get to know people in the Lower Classes, encourage them to “Take the Risks, “Go for It, and in a small way it mentors the lower classes by saying “ When you get to the upper classes remember where you came from!). This information will be kept for every contest and at the end of the year, the one with the most wins gets a Certificate or? (This is where each district can be very creative and do a number of things. I could see where a “Blue Max Cross or Crosses is put on a plane to show how many competitors had been shot down or ribbons on their caps etc. etc. etc. (ala WWI Pilots). Last but not least, it allows for the lower classes to observe their sequence flown by very accomplished flyers and builds comraderie. What do you think?

RE: I need a starter pattern plane
HI The venus 40 or 60 is an excellent choice, it flys very very true. If you can still get an excelleron 90, it does very well, especially with a OS120AX (this engine requires no work, for the directions and it will never let you down) . The aquila looks very nice, but until you see some building threads on this machine wait to see what the quality is like. Also, the otop 90 is a very good flying plane. hope this helps "in the box" "out of the box" we dont need to stinkin box!!! Wayne

RE: MIDAIRS!!!!
In thinking about this issue, what one could do is each line fly 90 degrees ( I -------- I ) from each end of the runway, then all you have to do is make sure each take off(s) and landing(s) are done as each pair finishes. This would keep the landings and takeoff s from interfering with the patterns. I know at most airfields if you fly this way you might have some sun issues, but that can be overcome in most cases. Just a thought.

RE: determining the fuse center line / thrust line
HI I use an excelleron 90 as a backup plane, and I tried it with ys110 but due to heat issues, I went to an OS120AX. it will fit perfectly on the soft mount that came with the plane. Then I put bolley gear for the landing gear, and wala! perfect set up, it glides at 1/2 powr and has all the verticle you will ever need. The OS120AX will idle all day long..... great engine. I had to put about 6 oz of weight at the tail, and I have the battery in the front section. it is a good beginners plane.

RE: OS120AX
Will OS be providing a header and tune pipe for the OS120AX I fly pattern and it is such a great engine. However, most pattern planes use a tuned pipe out the bottom for a number is issues, keeping the plane cleaner and tracking, more power, and cleaning lines on the airplane. Please Advise. HI, I am trying to find out OS is going to provide a header and tuned pipe for the OS120? Its a great engine and for pattern flying you really need the header and tuned pipe if for nothing else keeping you plane clean. Please Advise. Thanks Wayne Lovett

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Gentlemen, I have been using the excelleron 90 for a year and a half in pattern and doing fine. Just few comments. I used a ys110 and had problems on hot days, could not resolve the issue, so I went to an OS120AX....... it fit perfectly and gives me all I need. I run a 15-12 prop (15-10 is ok) and have all the vertical I could every need. I did have to go with taller landing gear but no big deal. It is a great combo. I cannot say enough about the OS120AX... out of the box it purrs.

RE: Contest Calling
I am so glad you are giving it a try, as for addicting (WINK WINK) naaaaaaaa dont you believe it, I mean it no worse than any other recreational drug (cocaine, heroin). As to a caller, if you have other guys who are flying pattern , fly together and call for one another. Last year was my first year in comp, and someone will always help you calling, If it is someone who you practice with, so much the better.. Also the better the flyer a caller is you will find the more helpful he is.......... I am very fortunate that my mentor is calling for me where possible and I call for him where possible. In fact, I can judge the masters schedule much better than I can fly the sportsman! If you gonna fly, you gonna have to learn how to judge so you can be sure how each maneuver should look like. Then you really get hooked when you see a masters flyer fly it and you say I can do that, and compare what the judge is looking for and what you fly!!!!!! WHOA BOY let the fun begin!!!!..... I must say for myself, it has improved my flying 2000% and improved my knowledge of getting an airplane set up properly to fly. BUT MOST OF ALL !!!!!!! IT IS FUN!!!!!! wayne

RE: I need a pattern starter plane.
HI I have been using the excelleron 90 with an OS120AX and it is an excellent combo. the 90 is an easy build, I used everything except the supplied hinges. Those I changed out with great plane pinned hinges. plane flys well but you need a computer radio to smooth the flying as it can do 3d with the best of planes. The OS120AX works great right out of the box. I can do a knife edge loop, no problem. please note other posts in pattern that the new focus II ently level plane is coming, and I can tell you the Focus II is a great pattern plane. Also, if you go to hobby people a lot and the have a 90 on the shelf offer them $175 to $199. I got my last one at $175.00 !!!

I have an excelleron 90 with an OS120AX and it is a pefect combo. However, I also recommend that you wait. In fact, read the post on the updated focus II entrly level pattern plane ( focus II is excellent plane)........... I think you will see three or four new entrly level palttern planes ready in the next 4-5 weeks.

RE: Help picking new plane for Intermediate
The evolution had a pile of problems with it and as those problems were sorted out on this forum, they mfg took all the fixes and put it in the rock and roll. For the price the Rock and Roll is very good. However, the focus II is a very good proven plane and you see them at many contests. My suggestion is for you to stay with what you got for this year and fly intermediate (we have guys flying intermdiate with Excelleron 90's with ys110's or OS120AX's in them and they do fine). Give yourself some time to do some research and really pin down what you want. Talk with the other builders and flyers, they can tell you the good for the not so good etc. I will tell you that flying pattern with hone your flying skills for exactness, and you will improve your FAI flying. IMHO.

MY Christmas Present
my mentor, has retired his EMC-2 as he has thre new planes. I have been calling for him the last year and a half, and he has given me the plane (includes all servos, and he is loaning me the OS140 that is in it. I cannot tell you how wonderful and scared I was to fly it. I have been flying the excelleron 90 with an OS120 AX and it has been a good combo. But the EMC-2 is like comparing an Lincoln towncar with a yugo. It is sooooo smooth, and I now know the meaning of feeling the plane thru the sticks....... I have not landed it yet but did get to take it off and fly it and get it trimmed out. The reason I did not land it was because the the wind was reverse and I have not flown in a few weeks and to be very honest I did not want to have to land under anything but normal circumstances. Plus it was late in the day and even my mentor had a hard time landing it due to having to land facing the sun. Now here is a question. My excelleron 90 is a very good plane but compared to the EMC2 it is inferior. Is this due to the fact that the EMC2 has digital servos and it is a full two meter plane, whereas, the excelleron 90 is a 90 size plane? Anyone want to venture why the difference? THe 90 is balances and fully trimmer out and has no bad tendencies. But know this the EMC2 has me stoked!!!!!!........ and I cannot wait to get into the new sequence . I am flying sportsman and this will be my last year in that group. In fact I intend to fly the intermediate with the excelleron 90 until I have the pattern down before I fly the pattern with the EMC2. Hope your Christmas was as good as mine. !!!!!

RE: Excelleron 90
hi I have two excelleron 90's and with a YS110 it was good, but them I put in an os120AX and it was very very good. Perfect engine for that plane, you fly on 1/3 throttle and can do all you need. HOWEVER, you need to watch out for two things, ONE - change out the landing gear to a bolly gear to get good cleanance for you prop and SECOND reinvorce the landing gear at the base, put the triangle stock in there to give it full support. otherwise, the plane flys well

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Hi Dave, I do not know if you went back to a year ago where all the issues of the excelleron 90 were discussed, but make sure you go in and reinforce the landing gear, or it will pop off the first landing you make. (unless the mfg addressed this already, but be safe and do it) also the aluminum landing gear is soft, change it out to a larger one to give you more prop clearance. I am running an OS120AX on mine and it is a perfect set up. vertical for ever, however you will need to change the landing gear to allow for a bigger prop. I am running a 15-12 APC and it is perfect. The OS is so easy to use right out of the box. Glad you are doing sportsman, the new 07 sequence is nice ( this will be my last year in sportsman and it has been fun). Wayne

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Hi, It depends on what type of flying you will be doing. I have found that the throws listed in the manual for the elevators are very close to the 3D portion, but if you flying pattern like I am, and have reduced the throws greatly to keep it smooth. Rudder it to the max, and ailerons are like the elevators they can be toned down. Hope this helps. Wayne

RE: District 7 Championship
Absolutely a fantastic contest!!!!!!!! everyone was their to compete, but in the best tradition of NSRCA their to help one another be better pilots, helping one another, talking planes planes and 07 patterns, good food. I am not sure there is any tri tip left in the Arvin Area!!!! Best of all only one plane seriously damaged, but a new wing will be easy to replace, and one plane slightly damaged, the was more cosmetic but a new canopy will be on order. All in All....... "it doesn't get any better than this"!!!! Congrats to all the winners!! and for me, all the new people I got to meet and talked about (what else) planes with, and all those who I have not seen in a while!!!! Wayne Lovett
