RE: 5 mm strut pin alternative
I don't know about that particular one, but they come in many lengths. That link was just a ready example. The shafts I used were another brand that I found at the LHS and they ranged in length from around 2 1/2 to 5 inches. Tower is usually pretty good about including dimensions, but not in this case. Don't feel limited to the RimFire brand. There are lots of motors out there and all seem to have replacement shafts available.

RE: 5 mm strut pin alternative
It's amazing sometimes that the thing i need is in the hobby shop, just in need of a little re-purpose thinking. Another thing you may be interested in is that the c-clip groove can be used to retain the pin in a retract to make it steerable.

5 mm strut pin alternative
I had a little trouble finding 5 mm stock from which to make strut pins that will fit some of the Chinese struts and retracts and found a simple alternative some may find useful. Turns out that electric motors used in .40 size airplanes use a 5 mm shaft that is replaceable. These shafts appear to be hardened steel and even have flats already filed into them. You can find them for as little as a couple dollars. Hope this is helpful to somebody.

RE: Should I Be Worried?
Things I've learned about products in general: 1. The final stage of testing begins at product release. 2. There is little rationale behind brand loyalty. 3. Reliability is a game of probability and our personal experience is but a single data point. 4. It's only a problem if it happens to you. 5. The leading edge is pretty close to the bleeding edge. 6. You only hear about the failures. 7. Stuff happens!

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
Some may not be aware, but SIG seems to be selling some of the hard to find brands from their web site. Just ordered a Kavan starter from them that i couldn't find anywhere else. They really do need to improve the ordering experience from their website or find more retail outlets.

RE: Hobbico Avistar a Performer?
I trained a friend to fly with an Avistar powered with a Magnum 52xls i believe it was. This turned out to be a very good combination. He could fly for 20 minutes at half throttle just putting around the sky. Pour the coals to it and you could do almost anything you wanted. I'd say a BB 46 to 55 would be perfect. We had to add a fair amount of lead to the tail, but if you replaced the metal engine mount with a glass filled nylon mount it might balance without the weight. Wish my Magnum 52 ran as good as his did.

RE: O.S. 55AX Engine Floods - PM Tucano
NewFlier, Just took a look and there is no such shelf in mine. Also noticed there appears to be a newer version of the PM Tucano. Maybe it is different in this regard. My Tucano has nothing but air under it. There are no provisions for retracts in my model so we must have two different scenarios. Does yours actually have retracts?

RE: O.S. 55AX Engine Floods - PM Tucano
Newflier, I actually have this plane and felt the tank was to high for inverted engine installations. Here is what i did. 1. Plugged the original firewall hole, where the tank feeds through, with a properly sized dowel. 2. Once the glue has set, re-drill the hole about 1/2 inch lower than original. 3. Modify internal structure to support tank level with the new hole. Seems to work fine with my TT .46 engine.

RE: Need a .25 glow ARF
I have a Phoenix Sonic low wing and fly the snot out of it. Easy assembly, light, and tough. An OS .25fx flew it great, but a .32sx will take it up to a 100MPH. The thing handles wind well for it's size and lands like a trainer. The only thing i don't care for is the covering which is printed and akin to stick on shelf paper. Hard to beat for $80 bucks. I would also vote for the Great Planes T-Craft if you're up for a kit.

RE: Engine mounting
You have to consider the total package. Sometimes it's a good way, sometimes it's not. The ring that I made had any unnecessary meat removed and really wasn't substantial. Just enough to hold the blind nuts. At least it was functional weight and I traded some of the firewall for it [:D]

RE: Engine mounting
Something I tried recently was to position as close as possible on the firewall and drill the holes. Then make a plywood ring to match the back of the engine mount including the mounting holes. Put the blind nuts in the plywood ring. Enlarge the holes in the firewall to allow the bolt some movement. Now bolt the mount through the firewall and into the plywood ring with the blind nuts. You can then loosen the mounting bolts and move the mount within the confines of the enlarged firewall holes.

RE: Top Flite F8F-2 Bearcat Red Box Build
There is glue available for ABS that sort of welds the plastic together. I think it is mostly acetone. You could also try PVC glue for gluing PVC pipe together.

Red Scholefield writes about these in The Battery Clinic of MA, July 2011. I have a brand new 617 that randomly reversed the throttle channel. It's always a gamble.

RE: Need help adjusting thottle servo
Bob, The first thing you need to do is make sure that the throttle control horn is at 90 degrees to the control rod when the throttle barrel is at mid travel. The same applies to the servo end as well, but since you say things were fine before let's assume for now that the servo end is correct. As stated by others, there are some very good explanations already in the forum with some very good drawings to illustrate.

RE: question about inverted engines?
I can attest to the tank height solution. Recently bought a Phoenix Models Tucano designed for an inverted engine installation. Even so, the tank was still quite a bit higher than the spraybar. I moved the tank down about 1/2" and have had no problems whatsoever.

RE: Mounting onbond video camera to minimize vibration & waves in vedio?
I've used velcro to attach cameras up to 5 ounces to the fuselage. The Velcro seems to absorb the vibrations very well. At first, I would tie a lanyard for fear the velcro wouldn't hold. The velcro never even suggested it might pull away.

RE: Old engines in need of repair
Another possibility is that engine distributors/manufacturers sometimes run a trade-in promotion where you send in an old engine for some small amount toward purchase of a new one. Seems like OS did one last year and Mecoa has a regular trade-in program.

RE: Aiptek pencam HD deal
Other than the form factor, the Aiptek should work reasonably well. If you search YouTube, you can find some aerial video shot from RC planes. This one for $29 meets one important requirment. It's cheap so you won't cry too much if it falls off the plane. I have used the FlyCamOne2 and the Sony Webbie. The Webbie form factor is almost perfect with its swivel lens. The FlyCamOne2 is for sale since I don't use it much anymore. The Kodak is interesting but its video specs are not impressive.
