A123: Dewalt Harvesting & Fleabay alternatives
Some time ago I bought a DC9360 36v pack from fleabay and harvested the batteries for RC use. I have run out of those cells & am in need of more cells. Have been watching fleabay prices for awhile now. The packs are selling for around 100-129.00 usd. 10 cells each = 10 to 13.00 usd per cell. There is also a couple of Hong Kong sellers selling loose cells. They are apparently real A123's. Item # 130331892537 20 loose cells for 120.00 shipped equates to 6.00 per cell. Very attractive. These look like harvested cells. (my best guess) The second seller ( Hong Kong ) has prices at 8.65 per cell. These appear to be new cells. Item # 320424227029 Not sure about tabs, as there are pics of cells with & without tabs on the auction. I guess my basic question is has anybody bought from these dealers? I am always a leary of a "great deal". Comments? Heck maybe I can be the go-between guy for a 100 cell super buy out. I would ship to all interested parties. Just a thought... Stan WV

HS-7955 Has the Jitters
I have a NIB 7955 that I installed in a new 35% plane on the rudder. I soldered in a 3-4' extension. On powerup the servo "jitters". I reset the servo & tried again, same problem. I tried another new 7955 with no extension & the same thing. Tried a 56xx series servo & all is quiet, no "jitters". I am using a A123 battery thru a Smart-Fly power Expander. Whats going on with these servos? Anybody have have a clue....? I thought these servos were suppose to be the cream of the crop. Gimmie back my 5955's.... Stan

RE: RCGF Engines
I am very aware of the DL-100, as well as a couple other Chinese motors. I do try to make an informed decision on major purchases (major for me) before I do so. Way back when I took a chance on a fairly new mfg. (in the usa) by the name of ZDZ. I now have 3 of their engines. I feel this is the same thing. I am just trying to collect real world data before I do so again. I DO NOT want to be left with a 700 dollar boat anchor, or doorstop, or paperweight... Thinking out loud: Sure would be nice to have all the players in one place to have a shootout & see which one is the best for the end users criteria. It is a fantasy I know. Or a nightmare, depending what side of the fence you are on... As of right now (as my budget allows) MY players are a used DA100, or a new DL/RCGF 100. Although I admit this changes almost daily as I read the posts from the real world. I haven't made up my mind. I am still waiting for all the data to come in. [:D] I admit those WRAM prices are attractive. Too bad I am not there. Maybe they be at Toledo? I looked at the mfg. list (WRAM & Toledo) & did not see RCGF listed, or their importers. Who was selling them? BTW: 2Robinhood that is a nice clean install. Gave me a warm fuzzy. [sm=thumbs_up.gif] Regards Stan

Hi Guys, I just picked up a h9 35% Extra 260. Obviously I need a 100 cc class engine. I have been looking at all the usual players (DA, ZDZ, 3W etc.). I am thinking about trying a Chinese product for this install. While I have not read all of this thread, I have digested a good deal of it. Not much info on the 100 engine. I have been putting off the purchase of a watt meter for awhile, but it is time to bite the bullet & pick one up. My question is which one is the best for the dollars spent? RE: World Models 1/3 Super Cub
I have started my build on the WM 1/3 Super Cub. Here are some random thoughts... After opening up the box and inspecting various pieces parts I found no damage. That was a relief. I have seen how some Greyhound employees treat baggage. It is not pretty... The covering was pretty much wrinkle free. Some if the edges around the windows etc. are loose but that is not a biggie. An iron makes short work of the builders lack of detail. WM Toughlon covering is not to bad. Shines somewhere in between Monokote & Ultracote. So far it shrinks when I need it to and sticks when I apply heat. All laser cut parts. Can't complain there. Looks to be a tough plane. Time will tell. Landing gear seems to be stout enough. I did contact William Wallace (via e mail) about making me a set of gear. Let me be kind by saying Willy takes 2 weeks to get back to you. And he wants me to send a check. Forget that. I do not do business with anybody that does not accept Paypal or a CC. I have been burned before. Never again. Replaced the wheels with Dubro 6' fatties. Much nicer look. The tailwheel mount plate on the bottom of the fuse is not long enough. Even with the stock tailwheel assy. only 1 of the 3 screws go into the ply plate. I epoxied an additional plate to the bottom. The tailwheel assy. is something to behold. A wonderful arrangement of springs, bolts & plastic. Its also heavy. Ohio Superstar got the nod as a replacement. Its not scale, but it is lighter. The slot in the fuse that holds the horizional stab. was wonderfully level with the wing tubes. My only gripe about the method of attachment is that after you slid the hor. stab in place there was some space between the upper joint (at the front half only). It was less than a 1/16th. All servo cutouts have been perfectly sized. A pleasant surprise. (Hitec 5645's) The hardware that I have fondled so far is not of bad quality. As a matter of fact I was surprised to find bearings on all the control parts. WM even included the servo arms with bearings. A nice touch... The push rods need reinforcement. I dont have a carbon rod like someone suggested. I replaced with carbon arrow shafts, Rocket city, Dubro and H9 hardware. All because I did not have the correct size carbon rod in my inventory. LHS is 42 mi. round trip. 'Nuff said. The worse part of the whole build so far (I have not started on the wings yet) is the mounting of the cowl. I tried to fit the cowl to the fuse with no motor, to get an idea of where the cowl wants to be placed. Let me make a long story short by saying that the cowl did not let me know. I am going to have to force her into submission. It is not going to be a pretty sight after it is done. Its too bad that the cowl is so far off. I take pride in my fit & finish. This cowl is not going to be up to my usual high standards. Shame on WM for the fit of this cowl. [:@] I did call Steve at Airborne & he said the hub to firewall was 7.75". I mounted my G-62 at that measurement. I have not tried to mount the cowl. Maybe I will fly it without a cowl? It might be prettier... LOL My Power Expander fits nicely on the provided plate. It sure is roomy in there! M1 (A123) cells will power this bird. I will make the plate removable so I can access the fuel tank (not installed) as needed. A quick tip. I have been using Tygon fuel line for years. It will harden with age. A better alternative is Hayes Fuel line. Good for glow, gas, smoke & kerosene. Not suppose to harden either. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXK824&P=ML I am hoping that it will not be too small an ID. I will report later on this. That about all I have to report at this time. Sorry I was so long winded. Part 2 to follow as I progress. I almost forgot: I can't stand the stripes on this plane. They do not line up with the red covering that goes across the bottom of the fuse. I pulled off the 2 stripes on the rudder. I am contemplating pulling more stripes off the fuse and either relocating them or doing away completely. But that is a story for a later date... As always comments, questions , raves & rants always welcome! Blue Skies, Stan WV

Could some one post a pic of the installed cowl? I am having fits trying to mock up my motor install (G62). Am trying to get the cowl to fit before I mount the 62. I just picked up my WM Super Cub last night from the J&C Hobbies in Pittsburgh. ( I am in WV). Heck of a big box. Did not have time to check contents, but the box has no apparent damage to the exterior. Greyhound did a good job! Proposed engine is a G-62, hitec 5645's all around & a 5955 on rudder. Hi Peeps. I just soldered a couple diodes to a VPX pack. Battery voltage 6.6, 6.30 with one diode and 5.96 measured with 2 diodes. Diodes are RS cat. # 276-1114 1.5A @ 1000V. How come I am only seeing .3 voltage drop per diode? Do I need to have a load (like a bulb) and measure? Just wondering as this is my first attempt at lowering voltage with a diode. Stan

PE 14mz switch/charge Question
I have a PowerExpander 14mz. I was wondering what the switch schematic is? I assume that you interrupt the positive & negative terminals for "off" and short them out for 'on'. I am also guessing that the signal wire does nothing. Correct? In charging M1 (A123) cells through the PE 14mz, how many amps can I charge at without frying the PE? As you may have guessed I am being resourceful and making my own switch & charge jacks. Thanks for the replies.... Blue Skies

RE: Ignitions on A123 Cells??
Thanks for the replies Gents. Gotta love this forum. Great exchange of information. Zeeb: My thoughts exactly on the 5 Cell RX vs the M1 cells. I think I will be ok. What I am not sure of is the same pack for RX & Ign. I guess I will go where no man has gone before... *chuckle* As far as the time frame for info is concerned: I do not have the Dewalt pack yet. In transit from Fleabay. I do have several packs of VPX cells. I made one up last night for Ign. I did put it back in its stock case. I figure a couple ounces is not going to make a dif. and it might give me a tad more protection from the motor vibes. Surely cant hurt. Heck I do not even have my new plane yet. Due sometime in April, although I will try the cells out in a 150 sized Great Planes Big Stick bashed into a Ultra Stick look alike with a ZDZ 40 mounted on the front. I have a feeling my ignitions are of the old style & will not be able to take the voltage of the M1 cells. Diode here I come... I will post any info I come up with in the upcoming days. Again thanks folks! Blue Skies

Falkon Ign. & M1 (A123) cells Unregulated
I am about to switch 3 ZDZ motors (40, 80 & 160) over to M1 (A123) cells. From what I can gather reading other posts, several people are using the M1 cells (2 cells) on their ignitions, unregulated, with no ill effects. A couple manufactures even said that it was ok to do so. So I ask the questions... Is it ok to do so? If not what is the upper & lower limit of the input of the Falkon ignition? Thanks in advance... RE: Ignitions on A123 Cells??
Great thread guys. I was searching for a thread on regulators and A123 cells. Seems my ZDZ Falcon Ign. won't handle A123's (40,80 & 160cc) unregulated. Sure opened up a can of worms to my eyes! Reminds me of Star Trek... I see that 99.9% of the posts deal with the Spektrum/FAAST 2.4Ghz radio systems. What about us 72 Mhz guys lagging behind in the upgrade curve? Has anyone tested A123 cells unregulated into a Futaba system? (More precisely a DP149 RX) I hate to go where no man has gone before... but I will iffin I have to... Stan

Old Li-ion testing / cycling
I am getting ready to hop on the M1 (A123) Bandwagon. Some of my planes have 2+yr. old Li-Ion batteries that I assembled. IGN. & RX packs. (I assemble all my packs) But before I do change batteries I would like to check the capacity of the Lithiums that are currently being used. I have always heard that you do not discharge these batteries for fear of hurting them. Right now I am cycling some 2200 & 4400 packs. What would be the proper method of checking these packs for capacity? I hate to replace good batteries, although the replacemants some would argue are better. Thanks in advance. Stan

Big 4st. needed for a 33% Super Cub
Howdy. I have been reading with great interest about the converted 4 cycle motors out in RC land. I thought I would ask a few Q's before I proceed. Plane in question: World models 33% Super Cub. AUW approx 28-35# Several are flying with G-62's. Why can't it also fly with a big 4 banger? And the sound... quite tasty i bet... Looking at the Stihl 65cc 4 stroke. I must confess that I am not ruling out other motors, that one just came to mind. Questions: Is somebody converting & selling to individuals or are individuals tracking down the motors & sending to someone to be converted? Obviously there are several talented individuals that are converting there own. I will not be one of them. LOL Are there other motors out there that are suitable for my application?
