EPIC FPV flying through a Martian Landscape!
If you've ever wanted to fly FPV in a Martian landscape, this is as close as you can possibly get! Absolutely breathtaking scorched red terrain, majestic cliffs, beautiful rivers covered with water lilies made of ice, natural stone arches, and narrow chasms barely big enough to fly through all make up one of my best FPV videos yet. Filmed in the open deserts west of Moab, Utah, this place is a fantasy land of FPV terrain, both exciting and treacherous. Edited to a fantastic soundtrack score by E.S. Posthumus, if you don't get goosebumps, you might want to check for a pulse!

For those of you who like to watch FPV videos, this is a thread for people to post their new FPV videos of any kind. It's a pain to constantly be monitoring the FPV section for new videos, so let's get them all in one place. I'll start with a fun vid I put together of the past two weeks flying FPV in the autumn colors of Utah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Doz7o7KtyS0

RE: KMP F-7F Tigercat
Hey Gents! Anybody on here have stock retracts they want to sell? A friend and I have been saving up the cash to build a couple of these Tigercats to build in formation, and we finally called to place the order this week, only to find that all of the retracts are out of stock and they aren't planning on getting any more in until next spring at the earliest... and possibly not until fall next year. Evidently ESM is converting EVERYTHING to electric retracts, which is awesome, except they screwed upon the design, they take nearly a full minute to retract instead of the 5-10 seconds that they should. Nobody in their right mind would want to put something in the plane that would jeopardize their ability to land in a timely fashion should a problem arise with one of their engines or run out of fuel. So we're either going to cancel the project (which would be sad) or we're hoping to find someone that has the stock retracts and isn't using them. We can't afford $700 for Sierras, so we either find some stock retracts somewhere, or we wait a year until the V2 electric retracts come into stock. We're crossing our fingers a couple guys out there have upgraded to Sierras or CJMs and want to sell their stock gear.

Great Vids Argyris! Keep 'em coming! Seeing two of these planes together is a real treat. There's another local fellow building a PC-21 who bought one the following day after seeing mine, and I'll be able to fly with him in a few weeks when he finishes his build.. I'm excited to fly some formation with two of them! [:D]

RE: New KMP PC-21
Well it took me over a year due to some issues beyond my control, but I finally got my PC-21 built and flew it this past weekend at the St. George President's Day Fly-In in Southern Utah. I went ahead and cut off the cockpit area so that batteries could be accessed from the top, and installed two BBI Thunderbird pilots, along with a custom sound system to simulate a turboprop. It was a nice straightforward build with very few issues. The kit is absolutely gorgeous and one of those rare products where all the parts actually fit together nicely and everything came out very clean. Tomas at VQ got me my plane in short order, then I had to let it collect dust for a while, but it's finally done and I'm incredibly happy with the results! This video is a compilation of the first three flights. More to come as weather permits! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCf8W5jCUnU

RE: Green Model (Hobby-Lobby) Gee Bee Y Senior Sportster
Brett, The engine facade requires the little half-moon shaped wood pieces. Those fit around the inside of the cowl, the curved side fitting snug in the concave ring of the cowl with epoxy. Then screw the facade to those wood pieces. I flew with that plastic pan on the belly only once, then just flew without it. It's not necessary. You should be able to find replacement nylon bolts at your hardware store. I bought a bag of them online. They're plenty strong to hold the wing on. They will snap off if you ever run into anything, which could save your wing from more serious damage. If you can't find any, let me know and I can send you some of mine.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
PLANE JIM, I don't believe that's the case. You can assign a servo slow function to any servo, assigned at an increment of .1 seconds. So if you add +1.7 to a servo in the servo slow menu, you add 1.7 seconds to the time it takes the servo to complete the move. The difficulty comes when you want servos to operate at a normal speed until being triggered by a mix or switch, which would operate them at a slower speed. I don't think there's a way to assign speed rates to servos being controlled indirectly in this fashion. The switch or mix would drive them at whatever their default speed is, depending on how you've got it set up in that servo's channel. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
I second the motion. It's just silly to have to use up your channels, leaving them empty to program a 7-point curve or mix, when the functionality should just be built into each channel independently, like most decent radios. I can't fathom that Hitec would want to limit their user base for such an advanced radio to just casual flyers & park flyers. Channel slots get tight really fast when building warbirds with retracts & multiple split flaps. And a 12 channel radio would be the coolest, especially if we could just do a software upgrade to our existing radio and buy bigger receivers.

RE: Cox Pitts M-12 Assembly
Wow, I finally got this puppy airborne this weekend, after three failed maiden attempts. First time, a main aileron servo was bad, had to replace it before flying. Second time, I took it to an abandoned airstrip in the desert, which was bumpier than I expected and the plane bounced so much on taxi that the prop caught and shattered my prop & spinner. Stink. Got a new spinner & prop, took it out for a third try and just as it lifted off the motor ripped itself off the airframe. Turns out I'd weakened it on the previous attempt. The motor came off the plane but wires stayed attached, it caught the ground and brought the plane down in a nice carthweel. Boy that hurt to watch. Trashed the cowl. I finally got around to rebuilding the motor cage (built several other planes in the meantime) and took it out for a maiden this Saturday. Plane flew like a dream. Absolutely gorgeous. Fast too, insanely fast on the 12S setup I've got in there. Now I've got a problem. I had a buddy of mine help me rebuild the cowl (it took heavy damage in the cartwheel) and it's all glassed, filled, & sanded. But I need to find paint to match. I tossed my manual after finishing the plane, and have no idea what color this plane is. Somebody mentioned that it was SIG covering, but nobody's stated which SIG Aerokote color it is. They have several that look like possibilities. But I need the paint dope for the cowl, and the colors they state don't even match the names of the Aerokote covering. Does anybody happen to know what color this covering is? And is it Aerokote Lite, or just regular Aerokote covering? If I can just get the right paint, I can finally be done with this project and start enjoying it. Does the manual mention the color? And which paint should I use? Here's the list of SIG paints. http://www.sigmfg.com/IndexText/SIGSD026.html Here's the list of SIG Aerokote covering http://www.sigmfg.com/cgi-bin/dpsmar...100.html?E+Sig I'm guessing Bright Red for covering, and Light Red for paint, but am hoping somebody will know for sure before I flush a bunch of money on a guess. If somebody had a cowl or kit they wanted to part with, I guess that'd work too. :)

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Ron, Yep, you can do that. Receivers don't care which port power goes into, and since these wires are so thin, it's wise to use more than one just to ensure there's enough juice flowing to the bigger servos in large planes. I usually have two power lines (one to channel 8, one to channel 9/batt), and the SPC powered independently. Works great! I love the Optima receivers!

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Ron, I don't think it's an issue of coming unbound in the air, I think it's an issue of changing your TX settings while your RX is turned off. If you go into SCAN MODE in your TX, for instance, when the RX is turned off, then the radio is broadcasting differently the next time you turn it on and your RX may not recognize it. That's a hunch based on what I was doing when it happened, and may be completely wrong. I'll try and replicate the behavior and identify it this weekend when I'm at the field. I repeat, once I rebound my RX I had no further problems. I'd figure it out now, but I've got a show to get ready for and the band is gonna be pissed if I show up unprepared. I'm off! Happy flying!

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Ron, I've had that same stepping receiver issue that you described. I think that it's actually the receiver unbinding itself. I've got a receiver that's done this a couple times, where it seems to be getting the right signal from the TX (like left aileron if I'm jamming the stick left), but it moves a bit in the right direction, then stops, then moves a bit, then stops. It's like it's getting 2% of the signal or something. I think that it's literally doing just that, your radio is transmitting on a certain channel set, but the receiver is on a different set, but it DOES have a small area of the band where it's overlapping and picking up a fraction of the signal. Each time I've rebound the receiver, it works fine after that. It begs the question, if I bind all my receivers individually to my TX, does it remember what each receiver's signal setup was? What if I bind 4 planes, then do a SCAN mode startup with my TX, which scans the frequency and chooses which parts of the band to use, do all my old receivers have to be rebound at that point because I've changed the TX transmission distribution across the channel? That would suck. I just assumed that the receiver would be told by the TX what parts of the 2.4 band it was using and communicate intelligently somehow.

RE: CMP Cessna 182 Building Thread>the best scale Cessna 1.20 size ARF that is on the market!!!
Great day to buy this plane, it just went on sale at Nitroplanes. The 50 size is down to $99 and the 140 size is $169. Great deal for a plane this big. If it weren't such a hassle to make all the mods, I'd get one right now. Wouldn't it be nice to get an ARF that really is almost ready to fly? Too many projects already in boxes, not enough time. But I've had my eye on this one for a long time. Has anybody seen this converted to a float plane? I'm curious what floats might work for it.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Nope, I'm not talking about Expo. You can't control expo at a point-level like you can with a typical point control curve. Here's a diagram to show what I'm talking about. My Evo's can do this on any servo. From what I can tell, the Aurora only allows 7-point control on the throttle curve, but I'm hoping I'm wrong and that there's some way not covered in the manual. That link to the FlyGian thread talks about 7 point p-mixes, but I have no idea how to use a P-Mix to control a single servo's movement, and the thread doesn't say anything about it, just that they exist. Isn't a P-Mix just a way of saying "if I move my elevator 50%, also move my flap 100%", and such. I don't want to use one control to influence another, I just want a single switch (in this case G) to control a single servo at a controlled speed (using Servo Slow) and across a 7-point curve of motion. This is a very simple task in my Multiplex Royal Evo radio, since all servos have their own control curves. I just can't believe that they'd completely rob users of control curves on the Aurora, especially since they've already got the 7-point curve functionality available for the throttle control. They just need to make that same functionality available to all the other control surfaces, for those who need it.

Programming CURVES, Does anybody know how to program curves for servos other than throttle? The Aurora has throttle curves, which are easy to set up, but I haven't found any way to set up a 7 point curve on any other servo. My other two radios have curves functions on every servo (separate from Exponential curves) that allow you to adjust individual points along the servo range of motion. I can't find it anywhere! I'm hoping somebody knows it's secret hiding position, because if this radio doesn't have basic curve functions, I'm absolutely screwed on several of my planes. TIA, tODD

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Well guys, after my Royal Evo 12 went up in smoke this weekend, I decided to bite the bullet and start over. No idea why my Evo smoked, I was flying fine, and then it shut down and I could smell it smoking. Motherboard just decided to give up the ghost. My plane was gliding in for a landing with the motor off when the radio smoked, so at least the plane didn't crash. So I've got an Aurora 9 on it's way with 4 receivers. Not enough to get the whole fleet back up, but it's a start. I sure hope this system is as awesome as everybody claims, because it's sure a kick in the nuts to start over... especially after that free receiver deal just ended. I wish my Evo had smoked a month ago so I could have gotten that deal. Well, I would have rather not LOST the Evo because I loved that radio. Anyway, it's probably stupid to jump in with new and relatively untested tech like this, but I really am drawn to it's feature set. Touch screen, telemetry, independent receiver power input and reasonable receiver prices. I'm really excited, despite the loss.

I just finished building mine tonight. It came in at exactly the same weight as my CMP P51 50 sized plane. I used the same gear, so it makes sense, but I build heavy. It came in at 7 lbs. even, but others have built theirs at 6 lbs. I'm using a big motor and big battery. Here's the thread I've been following. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1142963&page=7 I created a nice cockpit graphic that I posted in that thread, at post 100. RE: has anyone built a cmp spitfire 50?
Has anybody flown one of these yet? I just finished mine tonight, gonna maiden it in the morning. My setup is a Turnigy SK 50-55 580KV motor with Thunder Power V2 4400mah 5S battery. I used a separate servo for each retract so I could program them individually. The only mod I made to mine was I used a light pull-pull rudder system to save on 10 grams weight. Those CF tubes with metal rods are twice the weight of a good pull-pull setup. Hopefully it survives the maiden. It came in at exactly 7 lbs, which is heavy for this plane, but that's the same weight as my CMP P51 50 sized plane and it flew fine with this exact setup. The maiden will be with a 2-blade 13x10 prop, and if it goes well I'll convert over to my 3-blade setup. I found a nice aluminum 3-blade spinner at www.atsrcplanes.com. Very nice people at that shop. Anyway, I guess I'll be the first, unless anybody knows of another thread or forum where someone has already flown. I sure don't like being the guinea pig. I've got a second one in the box, just in case. [:D] P.S. If anybody is interested, I created a nice custom cockpit graphic for my Spit. I posted it up in the RCGroups forum in the Spit thread. Feel free to print it out on your color printer, cut it out, and glue it into your cockpit. Here's the thread & a pic. It's post #100 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1142963&page=7
