RE: Retracts - Mechanical or Pneumatic?
Yepmechanicalthat's the way to go. And here's all ya need to see if there's any current draw up or down. Just plug it in between the receiver and retracts and cycle em. It will tell ya if there's a draw. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN172 I had to buy one when I was doing my Hangar 9 P-40. Love it. It will also tell ya if you have a bind in any other control surfaceses. John

Wing Mfg B-25 kit
Has any one buit the Wing Mfg. B-25 kit? I have one that I'm trying to sell here, but no one seem to want the deal I'm offering, so I might have to build it myself. It looks like a great kit to build, but I think it's beyond my abillities. Is it very hard to sheet the foam core wing with balsa? Never done that before and I'm a little afraid of it. Wouldn't want to mess it up, ya know? Thanks in advance for any responce-John

RE: Frequently asked questions about Seaplanes
A great way to water proff the wing saddle is to put a bead of silicone all around the wing saddle,(after good cleaning of saddle) then line that with waxed paper, (no wrinckles) then mount and tighten the wing. Let it set overnight. Remove the wing and gently pull off the waxed paper. The silicone will not stick to waxed paper. Now you have a nice silicone gasket seal around the wing. That's how I do it, works great. Just my 2 cents. John

Wing Mfg B-25 Pro sieres kit
Just wondering how much interest there would be in a Wing Mfg. B-25 Pro. Series kit. With Robart re-tracs & the cockpit kit. My cousin bought it all in '03 and never got to it. He's gone now and I have it. I think it's more than I can handle. Herre's the link to check out exactly what it is. http://www.wingmfg.com/ John

RE: 4 star 60 maiden gone wrong
Get another 4* 60. Yes the fuse is weak right behind the wing. Your tail feathers coming loose is not normal at all. Send the failed joint back to Sig. and I'll bet they will sent you a new plane. The 4* is really a great plane. I flying my 4th 4*. There are three reasons why I'm on my 4th. 1-Pilot error, me. 2-Pilot error of the glider plane that I was towing. 3-Shot down. The 4* is such a great plane that I just can't do without one. I even fly it on floats. 5 minutes from floats to wheels. Just my 2 cents. John

RE: AMA Magazine
I think MA is a great mag. I especially like it this month (April 09), 'cause on page 34 there's a picture of me sitting in the middle of a bunch of planes at the Northern Calif. Float-Fly in Red Bluff last year. Taking a break in between flights, so I could watch a few crashes instead of just hearing the plane hit the water! Hate to see anyone crash, but if it's going to happen, I want to watch, ya know? I do get a couple other RC mags. though. MA just has to feature all aspects of the hobby. And even though I don't fly ff or slope soaring I read those articles, too. You can pick up lots of ideas on building techniques and different set-ups. Little things that can really make a difference. Just my 2 cents. John

RE: Nitro Planes Lancair 52
That Lancair looks a lot like their Aquila. I have one of those. It's deffinetly not a beginners ARF, and you'll have to make a few changes and re-enforcements. But I'd say for the price-you can't beat it. My Aquila, once I made the changes to my satisfaction flys great. In fact I flew it a couple times today and love it. Hurry before they run out. John

RE: Aquila AT10
Yep-I got one. Being a Notro Models ARF, it's not a beginners ARF, but I was happy paying $199. It has it's draw backs. The biggest one for me is it should have been a 1 piece bolt on wing since it's a low wing. Instead they made it a 2 piece. So, you have to remove the canopy to put 'em on or take 'em off. So, I just leave mine together. Other than that, my tail was crocked, so I worked with the heat gun for about an hour getting it straight. Two more hands would have helped very much. I made some other changes. Like a seperate servo for the nose wheel. Pulled out all their inner linkage and re-routed them. All in all-great value-just not for a begginer. And at $99 I'd say it's like a sore "tally wacker" Ya can't beat it. Get one, you'll like it. John

RE: Stubborn Fuel Tank Stopper Problem
I hate to disagree with Minflyer, but the third line CAN be used as a de-fueler. All you have to do is stand the plane on it's nose. I have a few planes with cowls in which I have instaled Hayes tanks. (the best) Using the third line and a fuel dot somewhere hidden, I can fuel and de-fuel using the third line and not have an extra hole in the cowl. Yes, it can be a bit of a pain to stand the plane on it's nose for de-fueling, but not that bad. Just my 2 cents. John

RE: First Kit ideas/help
Another vote for any Sig kit. I've built a few Sig kits and they are easy to build with very good instructions like Alex says. For your .46 - I'd go with the Four Star 40 or the Somethin' Extra. Both great planes, and great flyers. John

RE: 50cc Extra vs. Alpha trainer
Wowonly TWO mid-airs in thirty years!! When I was still on the buddie box nine years ago, I thought I came close to another plane. My instructor told me not to worry, mid-airs just never happen. He said he'd been flying for 20 years and never had one. Well almost nine years later, I've had ELEVEN !!! Of course two were pylon racing and one was rc combat, so I'd say those really don't count. But the other eight were plane and simple MID-AIRS ! Here's pics of a couple. Just goes with the hobby, I guess. Like some of us say"If ya can't stand to loose oneDon't put it in the air" The Chipmunk had a mid-air with a heli. Sounded like 8 or 10 kids hitting a Pinata all at once, and the heli flew back and landedNO damage. Such is life. John

RE: Lanier Mariner 40 MKII ARF 62"
Hey Guys-I sent Tower an kinda nasty e-mail about dis-continuing the Lanier Mariner. Didn't even think I would get a responce, but I did. Here's what hey had to say along with my e-mail to them. It kinda surprised me. So, maybe there will be a Mariner in the line-up again. I sure hope so. Dear Mr. Reade, Thank you for taking the time to send Tower Hobbies feedback regarding the Lanier line. We contacted the product manager. This is the reply we received. We are making changes to the Lanier line. The changes will involve reviewing the product lineup. We are reviewing the planes on a case-by-case basis and changes are made as needed. We appreciate your time and your business. -Tower Hobbies http://www.towerhobbies.com bat >>> "JOHN READE" <johnereade@earthlink.net> 5/24/2008 2:23 AM >>> Dear Tower-Why did you discontinue all the Mariners? They are a great flying plane. They are a great looking plane. Did you just buy Lanier to close down one more competitor? John At least it sounds like they might put it back into production. RE: Lanier Mariner 40 MKII ARF 62"
ORIGINAL: Pistol Pete hey..I know that maneuver!!!!!...definitely contagious. but sorry about lost and thanks for sharing. I wonder if you still have the same favorite maneuver or are you going to work on a new one?[:D] Unfortunately Tower does have its peeves. add to insult they have nothing to replace it. Its a love-hate relationship with those folks...hate what they do but love the prices...and they know it.[sm=punching.gif] They still have corsairs but reviews are not that hot due to short nose...kept CC in wallet for that one. I always liked the mariner just never got to it until the super discount tower had to which I also was able to pick up the SE 5A EP, nice quality but none of my lipos fit it[:o]...and the reason still in box as well.[8D] I have intentions of coating inside with thinned out epoxy to give wood some moisture protection. Definitely will be looking into that double throw elevator tip. Hey you know you want to fly one again...get that one in michigan.[>:] http://corrosionxproducts.com/?gclid=CNuqlYuywpMCFQ0MIgodOFeuDA
Yep-Pistal Pete-Ya got me pegged there. I let that favorite manuver fall down the priority list quite a ways. Now I'm working on knife-edge and 4 point rolls. And a really fun one is to try and make the SMALLEST splash or ripple while doing a touch & go. (splash & dash) And I do have one in the hangar now. Been flying it for over a year. A friend assembled it, (ya don't build an ARF) I put the maiden flight on it for him to trim it out. Then he crashed it, fixed it. I put the second maiden flight on it for him, trimed it out. Flew just great. Then he crashed it again and gave it to me. I repaired it, been flying it ever since. I did have one scary issue with it, though. I hadn't put the dual rods on the elev. yet, was only up about 2 or 3 minutes, when the other elev. half came loose at the hinges. He hadn't put enough CA on 'em. And to make matters worse the throttle linkage broke from the flutter of the loose elev. half right at the engine.. It's still controlable, though sluggish on the elev. But it's at FULL throttle !! Soooooooo-I had to do loops, rolls and snaps-just anything to help slow it down. Finally it ran out of fuel and landed nicely, no further damage. That's when I went for the dual control rods and she's doin' great. In fact she will see quite a bit of air time tomorrow at our "Memorial Day Float Fly". Then she will see a lot more air time next month at the "Northern California Regional Float Fly" in Red Bluff, Calif. So, get yours together, You're going to love it. Just don't forget the dual control rods on the elev. Make a silicon seal at the wing saddle. A little thined epoxy here and there to help with water resistance. And take the reciever apart, squirt it with "Corrosion X", wait a few minutes then blow the excess off with air. Put it back together. Then give all the servo connections a little squirt of "Corrosion X". And you'll be good to go. Here's the link to "Corrosion X" it's not cheap, but very good insurance. http://corrosionxproducts.com/?gclid=CNuqlYuywpMCFQ0MIgodOFeuDA Check out their site. IT's better than W-D 40. And here's a pic of my Free Mariner that still flys like a new one. John
