RE: New Great Planes Revolver
Of course the larger plane is in the background. If it were in the front, it might look quite a bit larger.

Rowdog, Do you have any problems with the Saito being mounted inverted? I was having some problems with flooding and hydro-locking on my Saito .72 until I put a Cline regulator on mine. Thanks.

RE: New Great Planes Revolver
Thanks for the tips, everyone. I finally found the combination that works great for my Revolver! First, I moved the CG back another 5mm from where it was last week (was 124mm now 129mm) by relocating the battery pack to underneath the servo tray. Second, I programmed 12 degrees of spoileron which I have on a switch on my Spektrum DX-7. Flew her three times today and landings were pretty close to pure grease each time! Also, adding a touch of aileron differential seems to help in coming out of a turn. I'm really falling in love with this plane!

RE: New Great Planes Revolver
What's your method for landing without skipping? Also, I did a search of this thread and found one place where someone estimated their spoileron programmed at 10-15mm which figures out to be between 11.35 and 17.17 degrees. Also saw a recommendation of 35 degrees (seems like too much). What didn't you like about the spoilerons? Thanks.

Anyone using spoilerons to help prevent the skipping problem? If so, about how much are you using? Thanks.

Still trying to get this plane to land without having to land too hot. Questions: 1. How much spoileron are you using? 2. Do think think 129mm (~5.08 inches) is too tail heavy? Thanks. Marl

RE: New Great Planes Revolver
Great tips, N495RD. I removed the 420cc tank and replaced it with a 355cc tank. I also moved the tank back closer to the wing tube. I think that should help some with getting rid of some of the fuel weight that is forward of the CG.

RE: New Great Planes Revolver
Yes, but on a different plane. The Saito was on a GP Venus that met its demise (rolled out of a low knife-edge the wrong way). That's where the valve covers got messed up. The Venus was another hot-landing plane from GP! No nose-overs yet on the Revolver. Shouldn't have any once the CG is set sufficiently back.

RE: Nitro Models Yak 52?
The pull - pull on your kit is different from the Yak ARF that I built. My kit had a metal cross bar which connects to both elevator halves. Pull - pull represents a design improvement because you don't get the torsional twist between the halves. Also it sounds like the fiberglass LG is another improvement. My landing gear will bend if you just look at it. Of course that creates an incentive for making perfect landings every time. From the picture I can't tell which servo arm to suggest, however for the cable, you'll want something that doesn't stretch. Kevlar is one possibility but it can fray if dragging over an edge. I prefer a small diameter, braided metal cable with a plastic sheath over it. Marl

Still flying mine. I love it. I've got an O.S. 55 in it. I don't really 3D with it but I'm sure it would do fine with more control throw. I reinforced the horizontal stabilizer with hardwood and replaced all tail feather hinges with nylon pin hinges. I replaced the foam wheels with nice aftermarket ones and also replaced the wheel pants with ones from a crashed GP Venus. Have fun! Marl

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well I maidened my Wm Super Chipmunk today powered by my rebuilt Saito FA-91S (new bearings, connecting rod, piston ring). Wow, what a difference from before! It ran smooth, idled nicely with good transition and NO TERRIBLE NOISES coming from the motor! I had a bit of a scare when I brought it in and saw a lot of oil on and around the cowl. But then I realized the nut holding the muffler pipe to the head had loosened. I retightened it and flew two more times. Great engine. Thanks for the great advice! BTW, the Super Chipmunk lands like a trainer with flaps deployed and just a bit of down elevator mixed in. Marl

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
This seems extremely unlikely, but.... could the valve timing be off? The Saito 91 that I'm currently rebuilding would not pull fuel into the carb even though I used an electric starter. Once I re-timed the valves, it started right up and ran fine (except for the horrible mechanical noises due to other problems). But if it was running ok recently, then I would think it impossible for the valve timing to change unless something in the engine physically broke. Oh- how 'bout this?: Is one of the valves stuck open or perhaps the valve clearance has changed a lot? That might make it behave that way- just a thought. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how can you pressurize the tank with your hand crank if the vent line is connected to the muffler? Do you have a check valve installed?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I mounted a Saito 72 inverted in one of my planes and had nothing but trouble. Hydro-locking, rough idle, etc. After I installed a Cline regulator it ran great! The tank was a tad too high in reference to the carb spraybar so the carb was getting too much fuel. The Saito 91 that I'm rebuilding was also mounted inverted using the Cline. Idle was around 2100 and tached up to around 9500 with good transition- just sounded horrible because it needed new bearings, piston ring, etc. Marl

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
That makes sense to me that the chamfer would be oriented toward the crank (as you said). It looks like there is a small radius where the crank journal attaches to the counter weight and the chamfer accommodates that radius. I also noticed on my engine that the dot is on the same side as the chamfer.

Thanks Boogermancan. I got the cam assembly reinstalled and valve timing set. Now just waiting for my new ring and connecting rod to show up. Maybe even have installed on my WM Super Chipmunk for the weekend. I meant to ask- I lost track of which way the connecting rod goes onto the shaft. There's a dot on one side. Do you know which way it's supposed to go? Thanks much. Marl

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well I got the new bearings installed in the FA-91S! I used to rebuild cooling turbines for F14's many years ago so I thought I'd try something that we used to do for pressing turbine wheels onto shafts: I put the rear bearing on the crankshaft and stuck it in the refrigerator. I then put the housing in the oven at 275 for about twenty minutes. Took the shaft out of the fridge and then the housing out of the oven. The rear bearing literally fell into place. I held it there until everything was near thermal equilibrium. And Voila! Rear bearing installed! The front bearing wasn't so easy. I tried the same method, but the bearing only went half way before getting stuck. So I got a 9/16" socket that would contact only the outer race but not so large that it would get stuck in the housing front bearing bore. Heated the whole thing at 275 for about 35 minutes, and then ran it out to the garage. Since I don't have an arbor press, I used my drill press and socket to press the front bearing the rest of the way in. Fortunately, it didn't take much force. I hope I did everything right. The shaft spins very smoothly now (not like before when it was seriously grinding and actually stopping in places). I put the prop drive washer back on and everything spins smoothly, plus there doesn't seem to be any axial play. I'm assuming that's good. Well, what do you think for my first time? BTW, now that I've cleaned all the parts, what oil do you recommend when I reassemble? I'm thinking ARO (ATF). Thanks for all of the advice. Marl

w8ye, The bearings for the FA-91S just arrived! I used my puller to remove the prop drive washer. Removed the cam assembly. What temperature should I set the oven at for bearing removal? Any tips you can provide at this point would be greatly appreciated. In a previous thread for a Saito 56, the oven temp was 275F and then the crankcase is banged against a board. Is it a similar procedure for the FA-91S? Also, how do I know which way to install the new bearings? Thanks! Marl

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
blw, Your point is well taken. I'm not sure what I can do from here. I could post a formal complaint on RCU and try to get him to make it right, but then the transaction is in limbo waiting for, who knows how long, for a resolution. My time is valuable and I'm thinking I can learn from this encounter and learn how to change bearings on a Saito engine (So far I only know how to replace cylinder heads, push rods/guide tubes, adjust tappet clearance and set valve timing). I suppose I could revise my feedback comments a bit to address his "name calling". But it seems like it's his word against mine. I know for a fact the valve timing was seriously wrong but he tells everyone in the rebuttal it ran great. And I also know I didn't mess it up. But isn't it just a matter of which feedback (original or rebuttal) that is seen as being credible? And so when potential buyers "read between the lines", they can figure out who is telling the truth? Marl

w8ye, Thanks. I may be posting if I get into trouble. BTW, and FWIW, the guy who sold me the engine posted an updated rebuttal and claimed to know nothing about the valve mis-timing or any of the other engine problems. He claimed it was I who "screwed it up". Caveat Emptor I'll be more careful next time :-) Marl

w8ye, You're right about that. I think the feedback I gave was sufficient to let the community know that they should exercise caution when dealing with him. Nothing is accomplished by revealing his name. I read more on this forum about replacing bearings. I think I'll go for it. I have a prop hub puller already, so I ordered the bearings and ring. Maybe I can get this 91 running right after all. Sincere thanks for all your help. Marl

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ed, No offense taken. As I mentioned previously, I couldn't get the engine started and I noticed that there didn't seem to be much compression. I immediately contacted him to ask about it and he told me- and I quote, "Hi Marl, that engine has never been out of the box, never seen fuel, bought it brand new of the shelf". I knew this wasn't true, so I emailed him back to make sure he knew which transaction I was talking about and included the RCU item reference number. I mentioned that I had not expected to be receiving a new engine. At that time I told him that I suspected the valve timing was off and asked if he knew if it had been disassembled. No response. Then when I confirmed the valve timing was wrong and subsequently got the FA-91S started, I emailed him again to let him know what I had found and that the engine he said was running great and so on, couldn't have run the way it was. No response. When I considered how mechanically noisy the engine was, the blue sealant that had gotten into everything and the amount of inconvenience he had put me through trying to get the engine started, and the fact that he wouldn't return my emails, I felt it was time to give him the feedback he deserved. However he attempted to block me from leaving feedback by marking my offer as having been "rejected". I contacted RCU about this and they explained to me that he's not allowed to do that since the transaction was actually completed. So RCU changed it so I could give him a feedback. So I gave him a "Poor" feedback along with a factual commentary about what I had discovered about the engine. He then wrote an incredibly caustic rebuttal accusing me of being an idiot and that I had screwed up a perfectly good engine, that I should stick to building plastic models, etc. RCU removed his rebuttal. Subsequently I PM'd him and tactfully said I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and that he might not have had first hand knowledge of the engine's condition (someone else told him it ran great and he believed them?) and that I would return the engine to him (at least it's running this time since I had fixed the valve timing problem) if he would refund my money and I would rescind my negative feedback. Haven't heard back from him yet. Marl
