RE: Looking for WW1 biplane kit (65“ – 73“ wingspan)
And further fleshing out Balsa USA's list, the Nieuport 11 is 73" wingspan, and is suitable for glow/gas/electric: http://www.balsausa.com/store/product.php?id_product=33 Generally, wingspan your talking about fits the smaller of the 1/4 scale airplanes, something that in fullscale would've probably had the smaller rotary engines. RE: Hoosier Dawn Patrol
Sunday Morning Patrol - Shrouded in Fog Sunday morning we finally had some calm air - under a thick blanket of fog. I managed to sneak in First Flight with my electric Eastbourne Monoplane - never straying more than a hundred foot at most from myself!! - ahead of the bigger birds. As the fog lifted the powered airplanes were able to take to the air - calm, moist, heavy air - for some very surreal flying. Two who's pictures I manage to snag: Randy Adams got in his first ever Fog Patrol: Jim Suchy also got into the action with his Balsa USA Fokker D.VII: Even while King Arthur (the always entertaining Art Shelton) bravely defended the Hoosier front lines with all the resources New Zealand could muster: As a note, Art was already to make first flight on Sunday, until my little Eastbourne did the deed - he didn't sound too dissappointed that he didn't get to put his all silver plane into the sky that early. His Nieuport 17, in captured paint scheme, was almost always otherwise airborne all weekend long, and I really like how that Nieuport looks in the air. We've definitely got to get our own Nieuports done!! Lee

Two pilots who were obviously enjoying themselves were Dave Johnson and Dennis Crooks, both with 1/3 scale Fokker D.VII "Blue Birds": They put on some VERY spirited formation flying several times on Saturday: I'm sure some folks got a bunch better pictures of the flying than I did - I was typically way out of position when the good stuff would start!!! There's just so much going on at these events!!! Lee

RE: Hoosier Dawn Patrol
Review of the Threes One of the highlights each year at the Hoosier Dawn Patrol is the Saturday "Review of the Threes" - as many one-third scale planes in the air as possible. I managed to snag a couple pictures of the action (which actually was done twice on Saturday - one unofficial practice session popped up spontaneously as well as the official launch in the afternoon): As a note, I personnally think that the Review of the Threes is such a rush for the participating pilots, as well as all others spectating, that we are definitely going to try to do this at Dayton for the Dawn Patrol Rendezvous on Saturday!! RE: Hoosier Dawn Patrol
Flags of the Great War When we arrived on Thursday, Doug Cox, Randy Adams and myself got with Sir Percy on presenting our collection of the Flags of the Great War. The collection now stands at 15 nations, plus the two war flags of Germany. And we took some inspiration from how Dale Cavin displayed his set at last year's Southern Dawn Patrol to run the flags down the flightline. I think they looked great: They were - unfortunately - WAY too prominant most of the weekend, as strong winds on Friday and Saturday (crosswinds, of course) made for some challenging conditions at times: But in spite of the winds, we had no crashes that I'm aware of, and only a few dinged wings and such to repair on the bench. She Who Must Be Obeyed and I got a chance to pose in front of the Allied Sector during the event: Helen and I had a great time flying and visiting all weekend!
ORIGINAL: abufletcher So great, it just makes me sick! I sure wish I could attend these sorts of events. [:o] I've take the (perhaps unwelcome) liberty to clean up this spectacular shot a bit in photoshop (levels, shadow/highlight, color). . . . .
Thanks for the notes, guys - I appreciate it! No problems with cleaning up the photos, Don - I haven't had the time since the event to do much more than sort through the photos, and get the better shots uploaded. I'll be posting a bunch more on the ODP thread this weekend. ANY time a photo gets a little TLC in photoshop that helps is fine with me, and doesn't at all defeat the purpose of this thread, IMHO. It definitely makes a difference being at an event that attracts the right kinds of machines to photograph - the first third of the needs for this thread. The weather and the site are equally important - we were very fortunate at ODP this year with the weather (wait til you see some of those photos! [:)] ). The trickiest part many times is trying to catch the right "pose" - showing the plane at it's best angle, while discretely hiding things that give the illusion away. We were again fortunate at ODP to have a good number of pilots who flew their planes very realistically. And yes, the mantra "Is it real, or a model" is the minimum standard we should all be targeting, with the ultimate being "No way is THAT one a model"!!! Very best regards, Lee McDuffee

Okay - let me take a shot at getting us back on track - photos from the Ohio Dawn Patrol0 2009. RE: Half Scale Fokker DVI
Good morning, Paul Yeah, lots of 'Schtuff' goes into one of these events - don't know 'bout anyone else, but I spent most of the week trying to catch up on sleep!!! Yeah, Dayton is gonna be something - but first we need to get to Muncie for the Hoosier Dawn Patrol!! Got one more short video of the 'Big Dog' in action - I cannot emphasis enough just HOW good this plane looks in the air - just about the most realistic speed I've ever seen in a model. The video really doesn't do it justice: http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y113/WinterHawke/2009%20Ohio%20Dawn%20Patrol/?action=view¤t=MVI_1453.flv Once again, congratulations on very successfully completing that most important first milestone on a scale model - the test flight - and I can't wait to see her completed and flying at future events!! RE: Ohio Dawn Patrol 2009
Good morning, Joe That Bleriot looks great - can't wait to see it in person. I did a quick search this morning on the 'net, and downloaded the manual from K&W on the Bleriot - according to them, the balance should be 25% to 30% - a much more reasonable range, I would think! 39% sounds more like the full size aircraft balanced - most of the old pioneer airplanes balance tailheavy compared to modern thinking - I'd be more tempted to shoot for the 30% point than anything else. I would guess anything further back than that would end up being very "pitchy" (to steal a line from American Idol") ) - an old rubber band model I built many years ago had this very trait. It flew, but every once in a while it would tuck under into a very sharp outside loop. Combination of the balance point rearward, and all the down elevator needed for level flight. I'd stick with the manual on this one!! Very best regards, Lee
ORIGINAL: Joe Westrich Lee, I didn't know you owned a plane. Â I thought you just flew everyone elses ;)
. . . . . . . and another thing . . . . . . . . Contrary to some vicious rumours floating around that should be beneath me (if there was any room down there, that is) - in fact, I DO happen to own aeroplanes that even fly - as a matter of fact I've reached a pinnacle of sorts with my fleet now consisting of TWO on-topic machines which should be at ODP. Besides my venerable (some sorta french word meaning old) GP Fokker Dr.1, I think we've sorted out the bugs in my new electric Eastbourne Monoplane. Turns out that someone's soldering techniques are substantially less than adequate on occasion. FINALLY tracked down the intermittant motor cuts - after looking everywhere for some sort of battery/switch/esc problem, it turns out I had a bad solder connection on the motor!! Tried to keep the heat off the motor as much as possible while soldering it, and succeeded all too well. Got four flights on it this weekend, all with no problems whatsoever - and finally had an opportunity to try it off of short grass, and take-offs and landings are no problem either (so long as I don't get too slow on landing - lotsa drag on all those bracing wires!!). Gonna be fun with this one at ODP - particularly looking forward to the early morning and late evening, with hopefully calm air. See y'all in a few weeks!! Evening, Sir Percy Yeah, that elder statesmen was Norm Kaz - he had a bit of unluck on Friday before Helen and I arrived, and was putting the landing gear back on his big 1/3 scale Fokker D.VII when we saw them. He managed to get everything back together, and put in a couple of nice flights with his plane over the weekend - in fact, he won "Best Military" with the D.VII. Helen snagged a couple pics: We spotted for each other on Saturday, and on Sunday I even got the opportunity to fly his D.VII around a bit - that is one nice flying airplane!! Yep, we're now looking forward to Ohio, then Muncie, then Ohio (to name the three large WWI events in the Ohio/Indiana area) - and speaking of Muncie, I've got my application for the Hoosier Dawn Patrol heading your way! VERY much looking forward to the events this season. Just gotta sort out my new Eastbourne, and figure out why the motor only runs for a few seconds at a time now. Darn electrics, trying to teach an olde dog new tricks. Heck, I haven't learned most of the old tricks yet!!!! Very best regards, Lee McD

RE: Machine gun sound and smoke systems?
The problem with a noise maker, speakers, etc has always been that they're not terribly loud in relation to the motor - the paintball guns are very loud by comparison. Even with a large gas engine, you can still easily hear the gunfire - the video link really doesn't do the sound justice, as the "pop" of the guns echoed off the trees and hills surrounding the flying field in a very convincing fashion. RE: Ohio Dawn Patrol 2009
Evening, guys Just back from up north after attending the Ron Busch Memorial in Menominee, MI - the Balsa USA Scale Warbird Classic Event. Got a chance to shake the cobwebs out of my olde Triplane, and start sorting out my Eastbourne Monoplane. Had a great time at our first Fly-In of the season, and now are VERY much looking forward to this year's ODP !!!! Got a chance to see the completed DH-4, which Balsa USA introduced at Toledo. While we didn't get to see it fly (a wee bit too windy for a newish important prototype), we did see some photos on Dave Lewis's computer of it in the air, and it looks great. Dave and Mark Enderby both commented on how nice it also flies!! Hopefully we'll get a chance on seeing it in Ohio (I believe they're first going to be out at Warbirds over Delaware the week or so before ODP): What's great about these events? The people, the planes and in the case of the Ohio Dawn Patrol, the venue - I've heard nothing but compliments about the site - folks like the parklike setting a lot! Hopefully we'll have a good turnout this year - my entry is "in the mail" even as I type!! Okay, with a new camera this year (Canon PowerShot SX10IS) and a fabulous venue (Ron Busch Memorial - Scale Warbird Classic at Twin County Airport in Menominee, MI - hosted by Balsa U.S.A.), and several GREAT models and pilots, I was able to get several photos that I think may just do the trick here. First off - Paul LeTourneau and his Douglas A1 Skyraider: And even when another model (okay, a pretty good one) was in the shot, it still looked real:

RE: Machine gun sound and smoke systems?
There's also a link to video on the Ohio Dawn Patrol website (www.ohiodawnpatrol.com) with a Fokker D.VI making a strafing run using the paintball gun system about midway through the video: http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a160/deljon2005/Videos/?action=view¤t=FokkerScourge2008.flv Pretty effective sound producers, but as Mike points out, so far (to my very limited knowledge) they've only been tried in the 1/3 scale (and larger) models. A great deal of weight can probably be removed from the actual gun, since it's really not firing anything but air - again, Joe and the gang could have some guidance on this. Best regards, Lee McDuffee
