RE: YS 170 fuel pump issue
I forgot to mention the cam followers, they have spiral groves around them to allow more oil past, I don't think the extra oil will be a problem as the instruction sheet from the 170CDI states oil content can be 8% to 20 %, I think, as I don't have it in front of me and it's to late at night to out to the workshop to check, and I bench run my CDI's first run on 20 % oil. RE: YS 170 fuel pump issue
If your refering to the 4 cap head bolts holding the disc valve assembly coming loose then you would have a running issue if the disc assembly was loose also. And on the 170 conversion, I recently had an unexplaned failure of the rear bearing it was dry??????? it surprised me, coincidence maybe????? don't know yet, intriging??? Anyway I,m trying a 170CDI carb housing with the sub needle on the conversion and will see what happens, also the 170 CDI crankshaft has a oil hole through the big end journal to aid in lube, and the conrod is redesigned also, I may also drill the crank the same as the CDI, so I now have both, conversion and 170 CDI. But it is still good to run the old 160 glo to keep my hand in. Will

RE: YS and gas
Oldfart is correct, you would be totally disapointed with the result, you would have a gutless piece of c**p that would most likly have internal failure very quickly. You would be better off getting a 25 to 28% model and fitting it out with a YS170 spark, move all the gear forward, treat it as a pattern model and keep it light, trim it properly and fly rings aroung the 45cc gassers. This is my next project, as soon as I find a suitable model with out paying a fortune for it, and I will fly a bit scale aoro's for the fun of it down under. YS Service Aust PS. I also have some new YS 120 parts that I will clear out shortly.

RE: YS 170 fuel pump issue
Good to hear that the mods to the valve body is working well, But I thimk you may have contribuited to the wear of the disc valve assy, you say you flushed out the oil with straight fuel and left it over night, you should have oiled the assy or at least used a fuel mix, when I assemble a engine I use cool power red, so the inital first start has plenty of lube. Your raw fuel dried out and when you started the engine it was dry, and it would run dry for a while until lube/fuel worked its way through. The gunk you mention is most likley the residue from the wearing parts. Will

I originally made mine from an old glo plug, use a 1/8 drill and drill out the centre and solder a length of brass tube in, and if you have the plug spanner with the hole up the centre, do I need to say anymore.

RE: YS 160 DZ CDI ?
As I said before, it's amazing what can be achived if you are willing to have a go, and I like how he modified the back plate, just a differant approach to the problem. My 160 hybrid CDI still runs the original 160 piston and liner etc, but because I have a 170 crank fitted I run two 170 head gaskets, reason, the 170 liner is .5 mm longer than the 160, and the 160 head gaskets are only .30 mm thick, and the 170 head gaskets are .5 mm thick. I have over 50 flights on this motor and I am now going to convert it to a low oil motor. I now also have a factory 170 CDI that I can compare it to. The factory 170 CDI will now go in my pattern model and my modified 160 CDI will now go in a 2.2 mtr Corby Starlet, not quite sure what muffler system I will use in the Starlet as I still want to run the YS mount, I was fitting a OS 200 but decided that the YS CDI would be a better choice. I must admit I prefere the CDI over the glow version. YS Service Aust

The muffler and elbo look to be from an OS four stroke, can't tell what size. You can't go wrong with using a YS mount on this engine, far superior to anything else. I have some for sale if interested. YS Service Aust

Hi Mick, You are in luck, I happen to be holding a couple of engines to sell for another modeller, he only runs the big petrol stuff now, one of them is a s/hand 140 FZ which was rebuilt a while back but apparantly not used, and also a new in box 160 DZ. RE: YS 160 DZ CDI ?
I forgot to mention to the owners of 160's, you can make more power from them if you replace the 160 backplate and insulator with a backplate from a 140 FZ. There are several types of FZ back plates but only one will work properly. Using your existing set up you will gain about 400 rpm. I have one of these set ups in my old Impact, no differance at all in the tuning, and has been running over 2 years now.

RE: YS 160 DZ CDI ?
Yes that is correct, but you could machine out the back of the 160 case to suit the 170 backplate, and as I stated the hybrid crankcase I have takes the 170 size backplate. Almost anything is possable if your willing to have a go.

RE: YS 170 fuel pump issue
We in Australia have also encountered this problem, you can machine out the imprints, but unless you have access to the machinery there's not much you can do. If you can seal the washers into the pump body etc, it may work, but if you think it could work try it, you have nothing to loose and everything to gain. I have experimented on other issues, some work great, and some are total failures, but I'm glad that I did, its amazing whats possable if you try. Will YS Service Aust

RE: YS 160 DZ CDI ?
Hi Jeff, No, the CDI unit will not bolt straight onto a 160, but it is possable if you wanted to do some modification, but only if you have access to a machine shop. There is another way but only if you are lucky enough to have a 160 stamped hybrid crankcase that looks like a 170 crankcase, I have one and converted it into a 170 CDI with hardly any modification what so ever. I could have done it as a 160 but decided to up size it to a 170. If you want more information call me on 0418 327 247 Will YS Service Aust

RE: tunning video
The problem is, no one will deliberatly run a YS out of tune for fear of doing damage, unless you are willing to pay for such damage. Or maybe if a few of you got together and established some sort of fund so a YS can be destroyed in making a video, then I would geuss a few would put up their hand to make such a video. Xmans

Another good product that can be used is INOX, don't know if it is available in the U.S. or not, but is in Australia. As I said it's your call on what you do, but as you have experiance in doing OS and Saito, doing your YS would be a breeze. Don't be afraid of the sealed parts, just get a gasket and seal set as well, they are very simple to do, nothing mysterious at all. 140 FZ 2 CRANKSHAFT
Hi guys, Does any one out there have a 140 FZ 2, its stamped on the side of one mounting lug. If so has there been any running problems from new? And can you remove the backplate assembly and check the back of the crankshaft, has it a hole in the centre or does it have a brass plug in the hole? Many thanks to anyone who can check for me. RE: Power difference 1.60-1.70
Unfortunatly what I call the upgrade is only applicable to the 160, but the modification that I do to the 160 will also work on the 110, BUT, it is not in the scope of most, and I would say almost all flyers, as there is work to be done on the engine itself and the possability of replacing ruined parts for the unwise is too great, and extra care is required when assembling, for these reasons I will not explain what I do. I can do the work for others but the work required and testing takes about a day to do, so the hourly rate of labour mounts up, not to mention postage etc. And if I did the work for others, there would be no warranties as I have no control over how the modified engine would be used or abused. When I first modified the 160 I was expecting it to disintergrate or come to some terrible end, but no it stood up well, but who is to say that it still won't happen?? I am going to do the same mods to the 170, but as yet havent had a chance, the parts are sitting on my bench just waiting. Will Crossman

RE: Power difference 1.60-1.70
There is a differance between the two, but not a great deal, so unless you are in masters and need more grunt, then let your wallet decide. I personally think the 170 can be a bit more user unfriendly during breakin, but after that there is no problem. But with saying that, there are two ways to upgrade or modify your 160 to about the same as a 170, one of which my son, Adam, used in the Worlds at Argentina, and the modified 160 was used in preferance to his 170. If you are going to spend $500 on a s/hand std 160, I will sell you a upgraded 160 for the same price, the upgrade will give you about 450 rpm increase on your setup. It does not really matter if the engine has only twenty flights from new, or has been rebuilt after 2000 flights, you will get the same performance from both of them. Adam's modified 160 started out as a very tired engine, I did the mods and was impressed with it performance, so then I replaced the piston, liner, ring, bearins etc, it is now a very nice engine with possibly better grunt than the 170 down low where you need it.
