Mato-Tamiya Sherman Firefly
I am now beginning to work on a Sherman Firefly. This will be a mix of Tamiya. Heng Long and Mato components. I will be using the Tamiya MFU for electronics and sound mating them up to Mato gears, with Heng long recoil and turret rotation. I have finshed adding the cast texture to the turret, and used one of Ethan's cast gun shields. I added narrow hatches scavenged from a 21 century Sherman to the Tamiya hull. I have aslo removed the sand shield overlapping from the hull. As usual I will post pictures as this progresses.

Agree with Big Mig on this point. Stay clear non smoke and sound, unless all you are looking for is a static model

RE: Which tank is best for my son? Many questions!
My first tank was a Walker Bulldog. It still has the original ESC board and nylon gears in it as well. Not a WWII tank so it didn't have the same historical interest to me. But it is a good runner with lots of clearance, so it is a good recommendation. However a Heng Long PZIII is a very good runner too, and has many more upgrades available then the Bulldog. The fact it has a short bbl, means the airsoft works much better. This combined with the upgrade potential may mean it holds his interest in tanks longer. Either way Phil has a history of making sure his customers are happy, so for a first tank, you have the right vendor. I also recommend you gettng one too. The idea of you and your son spending time together in this hobby is the best recommendation yet!!!!!!! Also a Tamiya Sherman builds into a great tank, but it is a kit and requires a week of spare time to put together. More expensive, but with all things considered is about the same value as a Heng Long 1/16 scale tank. Totally different animals, so it makes it almost impossibe to compare the too, but of course we all have an opinion on it, and we have and will spend huge amounts of bandwidth on here making those comparisons.[:D][:D][:D]

RE: Mato Sherman, M4A1 (76) EL MOD F.O. Pics & Video
ORIGINAL: ksoc
The price comparisons are misleading. Each Tamiya tank costs an arm and a leg. The Elmod electronics are transferable between tanks.
Did you every think you could do the same thing with Tamiiya electronicis??? They already come in plastic cases. The only down side is you can't re-program the sounds. (John Ackerman's Panzer III)
Yes I think that is the issue with the Tamiya package. It is tank specific, so you don't have the ability to change them between tanks and stay faithful to the prototype. Still there are a lot of heng longs out there running a radial engine[:D] so anything is possible

RE: M4A1
The cast texture on the turret is made with Autobody spot filler. The lettering is drawn with chalk. I have since gone over it with a white sharpie paint pen. I have also fixed up the pin up gal to look like she is painted on. Now comes the washes and weathering

RE: M4A1
This is a 76mm gun. Speaking of TV shows. I watched the Alien invasion movie, War of the Worlds this weekend, and guess what?. M4A1 76mm Shermans with HVSS suspension firing on the Alien invasion fleet. Thanks for the comments guys. Right now I am undecided if Sally goes or stays, Maybe after weathering she will be better. Right now she just looks like a decal!!!!!
ORIGINAL: Panther G I believe that i have decided to install all tamiya electronics in my Sherman. With the cost of converting it to electronics that will support one of the available battle systems, I can buy and install the Tamy guts for about the same price. anyone thinking about going this route? RE: NEW 1/16 M36 Jackson Turret Kit- NEW UPDATES 11/15/09
That is a good price. All of the Upper hull and turret on this tank are Diecast, and the metal tracks are really good. Factor in all the goodies you get with this tank, and I think this is a very reasonably priced offering. I am tempted to get another one!!!!!!!!! This is a real heavy unit when you get all the running gear and battery in it.

RE: Mato Sherman, M4A1 (76) EL MOD F.O. Pics & Video
You do present an option. I did something similair with my DBC's. I made I module out of them so I can just transfer them around between tanks. I do find though that this does present some trouble, as a lot of times I just can't be bothered to move the module around. I am sure the same thing applies to this. You have to REALLY want to run another tank to go through the hassle of transferring everything over.

RE: Mato Sherman, M4A1 (76) EL MOD F.O. Pics & Video
I think the Tamiya Sherman + the Mato Sherman offer one of the best plug and play type mods available. I think anyone who is looking at doing a Mato Sherman upgrade, needs to at least consider a hybrid of both. The El mod option is certainly one way, but the Mato/Tamiya mix offers some cool options as well. The standard gearbox on the Tamiya Sherman is bullet proof, and I see no reason why it would need much of an upgrade. My M4A1 with HVSS is just that mix of components and it is turning out really well. We certainly have all kinds of options now.

I cut down the Mato turret, and added an oval loaders hatch. I added some auto body spot filler to the turret to give it the rough casting look.

RE: Heng Long Recoil tutorial
The 20 ohm resistor should slow the return rate down to make the microwitch set up much easier. I found without the resistor, the momentum of the gun carried it past the microswitch, and the thing would just fire constantly

RE: Found this on Ebay...What do you guys think?
My Tamiya is on stock plastic tracks, and to be fair I have only recently done this. However I have had an RX 18 on my FOV Sherman for over a year and that tank is seriously twice the weight of the Tamiya. No cooling fans, just 3:1 gear reductions.

A few coats of paint layered on. Primer, steel, primer and then faded green. Still need to rewire all the electrical. Will use the top side hatches for an on-off switch and the charging jack.
