RE: Can I replace Gasoline with Kerosene, just like that ?
Briggs and Stratton used to sell engines that ran on both, plus there was a conversion as well. The engine had reduced compression via using two head gaskets. One would start the engine on gas, let it warm up and then switch the fuel to the kero. The tank had two halfs to it, one for gas and one for kero with valves to make the switch. The engine would not run on kero until it was warmed up first on gasoline.
ORIGINAL: Mr Lee You guys in the states are so lucky when it comes to things like this............. We have to just accept that it broke and buy a new one. Our hobby shops would laugh at us if we tried to return a model that had been flown even twice and then broke and we tried to return it saying that it was a design fault!....and I am sure great planes or whatever manufacturer would not be willing to ship a new aerie to SA as it would cost ten times more than just shipping it nationally i.e. within the states! I would take great planes' offer, it seems better than nothing at all... I purchased a BS40 two days ago and have seen that the wing mounting will need a little mod here and there to make it last....thanks to this forum I don't have to find out the hard [:o]
The origional poster lives in Canada. If you buy an ARF from Tower Hobbies its $80.00 to $120.00 to have it shipped. By contrast I had a plane shipped from Australia for only $70.00 CDN. Anyone who can access the web can contact the manufacturer............The shipping cost will still be born by the receiver wheather you live in Africa or the North Pole. Our local hobby shop up here is almost 2000 klm away, You sir are very lucky to have a LHS in your area, we up here in the Yukon do not! We have to order everything and pay the shipping expense.

One time I emailed them about a wing issue and asked if they could replace one wing panel, three days later at my home in California I had a new plane, the whole ARF, sitting there on my doorstep. I can see now that Great Planes is not so worried about customer satisifaction anymore....... RE: Great Planes BigStik 60 wing defect.
ORIGINAL: GaryHarris I'm in the process of assembling my BS 40 and have been eyeballing that area for two days now. Thats a bad design but looks like an easy fix. That square edge of the tab will allways be a weak spot unless the load is distributed over a larger area and adding a small radius insted of that square edge. I soaked that area several times with thin CA and then layed a CA hing on each side of the tab and added several more coats of thin CA. Hopefull this will distribute the shear moment over a larger area.
If you still feel uncomfortable you can cut the bottom of the wing skin from the spar to the leading edge about 1" on each side of the middle joiner. Then glue in balsa blocks. drill thru the blocks and install 1/4" dowels and make the corrosponding holes in the fuse bulkhead. Back up the bulkhead with 1/8" ply to be extra strong. The great planes method now is extra cheap, barley able to last the warranty period and guaranteed to fail.............Sad day for Great Planes

RE: Great Planes BigStik 60 wing defect.
Nine years ago the Big Stick 40 had four wing bolts holding down the wing. Enter the era of cutting costs to max profit margins by cutting corners. If you can make the wing edges do double duty by serving as the front hold down you save on wing bolts, hardwood, glue and the time it takes to make a wing as well. Times that by how many big sticks Great planes makes and well the Great Planes bean counters are very happy[:D] The only reason a manufacturer would change a sucessfull design by DE-Evolving to a questionable design is driven solely by profit not modeler happiness! [:@] Pete's plane only lasted months however my Big Stick 40 with the four bolts and thousands of flights from yesteryear in 2000 stills flies today, ,making hi G turns, hi speed dives and insane pullouts at full throttle. Come on Great Planes......What happened in the last nine years. I for one would be willing to pay the extra for a solid design. Either that or stand behind your products with more than just a 90 day warranty.....which is almost no warranty at all.

RE: FUSION 9 RECEIVER WEIRD BEHAVIOUR
Mike, thanks for the info. Yes it is working again and thats the issue. When something dies and then suddenly regains life, there is an issue. I have tested it and it seems ok. I am very leary about putting a $99.00 receiver in any airplane if there is a question. If it fails I will loose much more than $99.00. I have never seen this before and was hoping that someone else had the same issue.... As for now its sittin on the bench collecting dust as I am not sure what to do with it? I would have hoped that I was not the only one that has seen this issue with the Fusion 9....... Thank you for your time and help.

FUSION 9 RECEIVER WEIRD BEHAVIOUR
Have a Fusion 9 receiver. One day it stopped responding which I thought strange. I took it home and extracted the receiver from the plane. Hooked it up and tried to reprogram it. It would not find a signal. Thinking it was my now decade old Futaba 8U, I tried a Futaba 10Cap on FM and my old 6 channel Futaba...Nothing. I waited a few hours and tried again, Still nothing. I changed the reciever with a new one, programmed really good and put the plane back together. I sent the reciver to my LHS which is like 2000 miles away and when they get it.....I get a call saying that the reciever is working normally, that they tried it on every radio they have and it programs just fine. They send it back to me and guess what, they were right, now the once dead reciever that could not find a signal mysterioulsy wants to make me look foolish by finding new life! Well, this weird behaviour is causing this receiver to sit on my bench cause now im scared to put it in a aircraft. What if it decides to go on the blink when im flying. Planes are worth much more than it. Maybe someone from Hitec can shed some light on this issue?

RE: Karbonite or nylon, which is better.
Amazing - Two years have past and if you look at a HS635HB it still does not have anything on the box limiting it to 12 pounds. In fact the servo box says how tough Karbonite is and rates the servo up to 1/4 scale. After my buddy lost his 10 pound Mustang, Karbonite elevator servo gear train failed, his confidence in Hitec is diminished. I see more and more servos going Karbonite in the Hitec lineup.......................Think I will look for Non - Karbonite servos.

RE: Going to YS, I'm done with Saito
Raman - Sorry to hear about your trouble with Saito. I guess we all have experiences that shape what we like and don't like. My experience 10 years ago with YS was not good. I had an engine that had a casting flaw and when it warmed up.......it went lean and blew the prop, spinner and nuts ( both of them ) off the crank. This happened about 6 times until I finally put it on the stand and watched it go from filthy rich........to so lean it backfired. I have not bought a YS in 10 years............ My flying buddy bought a Saito 115, we put it on the stand and used 15% and put some oil in the crankcase for the cam and a few drops in the valve cover, checked the lash and primed it with a few flips. Using a chicken stick it fired on the first try and it ran great from the start with the supplied Saito plug. We then broke it in on a big stick and it has run great save the muffler breaking or coming loose all the time. The stock muffler broke at the threads where the muffler attaches to the pipe and an aftermarket muffler vibrated the big nut out. I guess we will have to safety wire it so it cant back off. My experiences are exactly opposite to yours. I just hope I have good luck with a couple of YS 110's that I going to buy for two warbirds........... A suggestion......before you write off Saito, put it on a test stand and run it to see exactly what its doing. Maybe it does have a problem, thats what warranty is for then send it back and get a good one. If it don't run good on the stand, it will never run good in a plane. You will also have a baseline to tell how it runs when on the plane, usefull for troubleshooting problems with the planes fuel system. The YS's are a monster of an engine when they run right, they are more complicated than a Saito, and we all know the more complicated a system is, the more maintance and care it will need. Good luck with either engine you choose to run[:D]

RE: In Line Fuel Filters, Good or Bad????
I filter all my fuel coming out of the Jug and going into the plane. I run fuel filters on everything. Some may say "what contaminates could get into the tank". To that I say the tank itself. It is a system of parts brought together to perform a function. Plastic tank, metal clunk, silicone fuel lines and some kind of rubber stopper. I had one tank where the brass clunk shaved it self flat on the bottom of the tank. I wonder were all the metal went? what about the plastic it was grinding against? On a receint tank removal from one plane that I have had for a very long time, for the express purpose of tracing down why my inline fuel filter was plugged solid. I discovered that the stopper was degrading and causing debris in the tank to foul the filter. Without the filter, it takes only a very small piece of debris to cause lots of greif and poor running enignes. Yes I have neglected my inline filters and have suffered power loss, but i ususally don't have dead sticks, that coupled with our small field and lots of trees and wind, its good to have a little power on final Others will have a different opinion, that is ok as well.

RE: Rossi .45 glow problem
I have never had good luck with the Rossi Plugs. The R4 that comes with the engine seems way too cold. If you compare with say a K&B 1L or HP there is a world of difference. I use the K&B HP plugs and when it the weather turns cold I use the 1L and in extreme cold I will use the K&B 4520 Idle Bar plug. I have had the Rossi's run great and when you pull the glow igniter, they just die. Ususally changing the plug solves this issue and I have noticed that the glow plug wire on the dead plug will glow but is no longer centered and or touching the side of the glow plug hole. I use 10% and two head shims on my Rossi 45. Once warm the engine is hard to stop.

There is little replacement for displacement so your saito powered revolver with the right prop should give the 55ax guy a good run for his money. The revolver flys nicly on a 12 inch prop so get as much pitch as you can on a 12 in prop, maybe 12x10 to 12x12. Should be speedy.

Futaba 8U with Syn Module issues with Hitec receivers
I ran into a very weird anomoly with this radio. I receintly got a FM syn module so that I can change channels ect. When I use the Radio with any receiver that I bought in the year 2000 it works great. However when I use it with new Hitec Receivers like the Supreme 2s with a crystal the radio glitches. The Rudder and Throttle are blended and the servo throws are almost nill. I thought it might be the reciever, so I changed that, and then the crystal ect, no change. When I put the regular module with only one channel back into my 8U it works fine. What is really confusing is that the Syn Module works on my older planes with no problem, range checks fine.... Also noticed that my older receivers do not jitter the servos like the newer receivers do, when you turn the receiver on and not the transmitter. RE: got a new plane
The F-20 needs some attention to the covering on the belly aft of the wing. There is a seam that needs to be sealed really good or any speed above 110 mph will start allowing it to depart company. It slows down very nicly for landing. When the nose comes up level on final it will slow down really fast. I start my rotation at about 4 feet and am ready with more throttle if the nose comes up too much as speed bleeds off fast. My landing gear seems adequate for the plane, however a few hard landings will break the softwood blocks in the wings.
