RE: OPS Heli or YS60 for speed
We actually got around 160 on a long vertical dive, measured with GPS. The plane has FPV capabilities installed. Other options I have at hand, but would require much more work are an OPS 60 DF, a Picco 80 DF and a Rossi 90 DF. The problem being they are RIRE, which moves the CG to the front. Maybe I will opt to build a new, longer fuselage. Thanks for the input.

OPS Heli or YS60 for speed
Hi Guys I haven't posted in a long time, but have this question for you: I built a speed plane based on a pattern design (thinner fuse and much thinner wings). It is doing around 150mph with a YS60 and tuned pipe, 10x10 APC. I just found an old OPS 60 (seems to be heli) engine that I can basically bolt right in. Do you think it would be worth it? The YS turns the 10x10 @ 13,500 static, and unloads nicely in the air, but maybe the OPS will deliver more. Thanks!!

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Finally got a chance to go fly, and take pictures. This is the Birdy 60, kit built, Novarrossi 60 w/pipe, Flaps, eflite retracts. Wing reduced to 9%, very fast!!! Don't be afraid of using a powerful engine/pipe. Definitely worth it. Different feeling and technique to fly the original ballistic pattern.
ORIGINAL: doxilia Pictures of the model and details of the wing modifications please...? [8D] I was thinking this thread could benefit from some pictures and details of other Dirty Birdies. Whether ARF or built glass or wood models, they are DB's. Without wanting to detract from the value of classic pattern ARF's (I wish they were ARC's), I'm always surprised by the interest generated by them. The P7 thread is on the verge of being the most popular thread on the forum. It's a good thing I guess! If... I were to put one together, I can see doing it with inexpensive equipment. I would likely sin and do it with cheap electric components (servos, rx, motor, esc and lipos). Maybe see if I can break the sound barrier with one before exploding the model through the shock wave... [:D] David
RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
I finished assembly of a kit DB just two months ago. Novarossi 60 RE with pipe, electric e-flite retracts. I'm sort of a speed freak and like very fast pattern planes, so a few mods to the wing were made. Flies awesome, and darn fast!

Thanks guys. I will call Darrel right now. I asked my buddy why he does not post himself. He simply is not into forums of any kind. He promised to register in RCU though. I'll keep you posted. Ed

Is Sierra Giant still in business?
A friend of mine who's living abroad asked to post this. He purchased $2,200 worth of hardware from Darrel Tenny of Sierra Giant last December. He wired the money and the last contact he could make was to confirm the money was received. I know Darrel has a good reputation, but this friend tells me he has called and emailed at least 50 (yes, fifty) times to no avail. Any info will be appreciated.

RE: DA or Us engines?
Hi guys. I have seven DAs, a couple of US, and a bunch of Zenoahs. My experience makes very clear that they are very different: DA 50: Powerful, light, fragile, very good torque. DA 100: Same as the 50, not so fragile US: Robust, poor power, heavy, several other issues. I would not get another one of these. Zenoah 62 and 80: Probably the best engines ever. Especially if you know that they need to be above 7k rpm to get alive. They last forever, even when leaned out with a broken prop! Quadra: I have a 52, a 100 and a 200: They are not good, even as paper weights. My advice: if you will not use this for 3D, get a Zenoah.

RE: Government intrusion in hobby flying
Rulings like this one only regulate people that are willing to follow them. I can't imagine a potential terrorist applying for an AMA membership and sharing his intentions. Simply put, whoever wants to make an aggressive UAV will do it, given he has the required background, knowledge and funding (not easy). The fact that we use large models and jets will definitely not make a difference in level of risk. I suggest this argument is used by the AMA. Best to all

RE: Overheating of FASST RX
Bax: Two of these receivers were powered by 2 cell LiPo packs using a well ventilated Castle 10A regulator set to 5.5V. The third one by a SmartFly Turboreg. What kind of power problems can affect these receivers besides low voltage? Maybe some effect of the switching regulators? Thanks, Ed

RE: Overheating of FASST RX
Hi Bax I know tris is An old thread, but we recently had three lockouts on FASST receivers. Two aré 14 channel and one is 7 channel. All three caused a total loss of control, and link could not be recovered until the Tx was very close to the failing Rx. Two different 12FGA transmitters and modules were involved. Could this be caused by overheating of the receiver? One note: All three Rx did not go to failsafe, but simply froze the servos to their latest position. Please advise. Ed

Could you please post the updated information on which FASST receivers have the option of setting failsafe on more than one channel? Also, with which modules would these failsafe options work? Thanks

RE: R6108 Questions
Thanks Bax Actually what I mean regarding the data stream is exactly if it is published. One more question: Does the Rx have a DSC port? If it does I can send in the servo commands through it. Thanks again. Ed

R6108 Questions
Hello I want to use the new SBus Futaba system, but have a few questions: 1- Can the system be used with any Futaba Tx? I currently own three 12FGA 2.4 GHz transmitters. 2- What is the functionality of the data port? 3- I am currently into robots (besides Rc Airplanes) and would like to control 16 servos through the 6108`s data port. Can this be done? If it can, you certainly have a market in the robot community!!! 4- Is the data sent through the S-Bus public? As an alternative to point (3) I could tap into the bus data stream. Thanks a lot, Ed

AXI 2826/12 still in production?
I am looking for an AXI 2826/12 with no results. Tower does not stock them any more. Hobby Lobby have them backordered along with all the other usual suppliers. Has AXI gone south? I hope not, as I have not found any real substitute for quality and performance.

RE: New fast airframe in the works
Here goes a pic of a downwind pass (windy day), 296 Km/hr = 180 mph. Passes against the wind were doing 225 Km/hr= 140 mph. Average = 160 mph. That´s using the YS!!!

RE: Super Falcon 120
I had a rough time getting mine up to speed, finally giving up. In any case, the aerodynamics wont lie. You can easily get into the 200+ league with a turbine using any of the many jet trainers.

RE: Super Falcon 120
The falcon is not really a fast plane. The wing is extremely fat and the aspect ratio too small. Have some fun with it, but I wouldn´t push it for speed. Just my 2c Ed

RE: New fast airframe in the works
A few updates: The small airframe still has the YS60, 10x10 prop. I added a complete telemetry/GPS/video system with good results. Consistently doing 155-160mph. A few 180mph passes in windy conditions. This thing flies like a beauty and a beast at the same time! The flaps slow it down for very easy landings. I think it is finally ready for the Rossi or an OPS .67 I got my hands on. Now the REAL news: The big 100" airframe is almost ready. I got some APC 16x16 props last week, and now in the process of tuning the G62 & pipe. Our guys will be painting the airplane this week. I will post pictures of both and a snapshot of the video w/telemetry. Ed

RE: New fast airframe in the works
Hi Guys!!! Out of line for a few weeks, but not grounded! We have polished the dolly operation and been able reduce airframe drag to the point where we are now. Yesterday we radared it at 155 mph still using the YS .61 and APC 10x10. Flutter came back to the ailerons, so we are installing servos in the wing. Next flight scheduled for Friday. As soon as the flutter problem is solved we will put in the Rossi. Also, the BIG airframe for the Zenoah 62 is almost ready. Should fly in a couple of weeks. Ed

RE: Hottest .91-.120?
Great thread!!! I designed and built a speed plane which is still in optimization stage. It is specifically designed to use a DF .90, expecting around 200 mph. I posted a thread a few weeks ago, which I will update today. Just as a pointer, yesterday we radared it at 155 mph using a YS .61 (2 HP) and an APC 10x10. The Rossi (4.5 HP) should do MUCH better. We are a group doing this and I think we have come a long way, more than willing to share our experience. Ed
