RE: New Yellow F/A-18 Build Project
Hi, So, on my off-time, I started doing some prep work on this. I've snapped the plywood parts out of their sheets and assembled the stab bearing boxes. Nothing fancy there. I've seen a few guys build this bird and redo this section or add a bunch of reinforcement to it, but it's totally unnecessary if assembled per instructions. Contrary to the instructions, though, the bearing boxes will be glued to the bulkheads outside of the airplane and shoved back there and glued in place when cured. I pulled out the other bulkheads to ponder mods. For the twin-turbine ones I've built, I added a 1/8" carbon plate doubler to the front and back of the front main bulkhead, but those bulkheads had far less meat to them as they were cut to accommodate twin inlets. This one is plenty good-to-go for single turbine use, especially since it already has an additional 1/8" ply doubler factor installed. The rear main bulkhead comes with a supplied 1/8" aluminum doubler which is epoxied and bolted onto the 1/4" ply bulkhead. The stab shafts are 8mm titanium with a steel cross-pin. The cross-pin slides into a slot cut into the (very wide) hard balsa block which is glued into the balsa-sheeted foam-core stab. There's an 8-oz carbon cloth sandwiched between the balsa and the foam in the stab too. When the stab root is capped with ply, the root side of the cross-pin is encapsulated between the balsa block and the ply root with epoxy, too. The result is a stab which 'ain't goin' nowhere', and will never develop slop or play in the shaft. I'm going to use the scale aileron and flap hinges, which are a lot bigger than I thought they were. The go through the bottom skin, the balsa I'll insert in the wings and all the way to the top skin. Each flap and aileron only has two hinges per (scale). Note the strategic use of honeycomb in my tail bulkheads, inspired by recent scientific discoveries regarding proper tail-section design.

Kingtech K-170
Hi, So after nearly three months of no-fly due to work, I dusted off my Y/A F-15 and massaged the 1/2" deep flat spots (from sitting so long) out of the foam tires. I went out to the field and gassed her up. Voila! She started right up and was all in-the-green without the slightest hesitation. Two perfect flights followed by greasy nose-up landings, then off to a fishing boat to snag some Dorado. Who could ask for more? The engine is dialed down to about 28#, but even with that it's mostly a half-throttle bird except for when going straight up. This engine is awesome. [:D]

RE: JHH AND YELLOW AIRCRAFT PHANTOM F-4 TURBINE CONVERSION
Hi, That plane will fly fine at 14lb dry. The one I built was built with the turbine pipe in hand, so I didn't have to retrofit the pipe past the DF mounts. Pics would definitely help with brainstorming.

RE: JHH AND YELLOW AIRCRAFT PHANTOM F-4 TURBINE CONVERSION
Hi, I don't think Tam is out of business. Re your concerns, I can tell you that there isn't a whole lot of reason for the airplane to weigh more than a few pounds over a DF setup. Back in the early days of turbine conversions, all of these ex-DF planes or kits were coming out weighing a ton because of people doing their 'reinforcements' for turbine ops. The problem was that most of the reinforcements were total overkill or completely misapplied reinforcements. A lot of peoples' answer to their strength concern was to add carbon/resin everywhere (including places where the carbon had no relation to the forces acting on the plane in that area). Consequently, they had the self-fulfilling prophecy of fast-landing, overly-loaded airframe that flew and landed like crap. In the case of your Phantom, you unfortunately have one of the planes that is not able to be safely flown on turbine power if built totally stock. Like Harry pointed out, the wing on that bird is relatively thin, and needs significant reinforcement if you're going to use the plug-in spars. The retract mounts have a couple of dowels pinned through them into the foam, but since the foam isn't very much, they aren't doing much to keep the plate in the wing when you get the tension from the gear trying to move back when the brakes are applied. There are some mods I'd recommend (like gluing in a cross-brace onto the LG plate through the top skin running chord-wise) that won't add much weight, and then making sure that your reinforcements actually are helping you. You will have to go in and dremel through some of the meat of your aft main bulkhead. Don't try to take them out, just make some moon-shaped cutouts in them to get the pipe past them. You actually won't be diminishing the structural strength of the airframe at all if you just reinforce the top and bottom of the bulkhead where they meet. I'd love to see some pics of the build-job in there, btw. With the right gap, a P-60 will be fine in there. The first turbine-powered one of these I saw fly was on a Ram 500. It hauled. It also landed at Mach 2 because of the "flaps blank out the stabs" misconception, but I test-flew one with a Super Bee that really hauled but landed beautifully because the builder (ME) didn't over-build it. I'd be delighted to help you with this however I can.

But nobody has any right to question my charecter or what I have done in my professional career.  Lets get this straight I was a Federal Agent for the Department of Homeland Security Air & Marine division, yes I flew Black Hawks and several other Jets that we had.  Before that I was Captain/ Check Airman on the B737-800 and 767 and know after leaving the Goverment due to conflict of interest becuase of a contract my company aquired with the GOV I own and operate Modellbau Inc. which is owner of Modellbau USA, MBA Turbines and UAV Flight Technologies.  and to top all that off thanks to all the Tornado customers and all the money everbody thinks I make on these toys I opened and own Prestige Aviation an air charter company out of Ft. RE: The new Tornado sport jet
Hi I don't know why, but I do know I ordered the F-86D when they were on sale for $500 plus shipping. Even at that price, I turned around and sold it for $400 plus shipping after opening the box and examining it for 5 minutes. The formers were cracking away from the skin with a little force and the fit of the parts was pathetic. There was CA fogging all over the monokote on the wings. No surprise to me that the formers still pop out.

RE: yellow aircraft f14 tomcat-
Hi, Well.... Yeah. That Tomcat. To be honest, I think the project is dead-in-the-water. There's no way to produce the airplane in such a way that it works properly without it being so price-prohibitive as to be unable to compete with the current offerings in the market. It's small by today's standards, and it would cost enough that we'd get five of those "WHAT??!?! I can get a Joe Blow ARF with all the fixins for that price!" calls per day. That's my take.

Hi First off, congratulations on a 9 pound A-4! The flaps are nice, but hardly necessary. You'll land beautifully (especially at that weight) without them.

RE: Y/A F-22 Rudder Flutter
ORIGINAL: ianober I wouldn't be warning just F-22 owners but all Yellow owners. Those horns are also used in their F-15 kit and ARF. So this should be for all models, not just one.
Ian, I thought I'd throw a couple facts in here. "All models" includes the F-22 and F-15 ARF's. It's more like 'both' models that are factory-supplied with those horns. I haven't experienced a failure on any of them, with hundreds of flights on half a dozen F-15 ARF's. My current F-15 is powered by a K-170 and flies hard and fast. None of mine are set up with balls or anything on the horn itself but, rather, clevises at the horn and balls at the metal servo arm. I think the observation about the relative size of the flying surface to the size/material of the horn is important. After I saw Ian's pics, I went downstairs and did a test-to-destruction on some of those horns I have sitting in a box. I broke them with my hands, although the amount of force it took left me feeling ok about them being on my F-15 (in case the hundreds of flights didn't). In the case of the rudder on the F-22, I don't think I would feel so confident, so I'm definitely advising owners to replace those on existing models and to use a heavier-duty horn on kit-built models. Again, thanks Ian R., for bringing this to my attention and let me know if there's any way I can help.

Y/A F-22 Rudder Flutter
Hi, I was contacted by a customer regarding the crash of his Y/A Raptor. From the pictures, we are not able to know for sure what let go first, but he reports that the fin departed at moderate speed in level flight. In the photos, you can see that the rudder horn is broken clean. IMO, the rudder horn was the failure point, and rudder flutter ensued causing the fin to depart. The customer wants owners and builders of this airplane to be aware of his misfortune in case there's a future crash that can be prevented. So do I. Personally, I've used those stock horns on many F-15's without issue, but that doesn't mean that it was not (or could not be in the future) the failure point. I've forwarded his email on to Charles, and I recommend that current owners inspect their rudders, fins and rudder horns to make sure there's no crack or weak-spot. On the next one I build, I intend to upgrade to a heavier-duty, carbon-reinforced horn.
