RE: landing bounce
Jeffsend, The bounce problem of my Pulse XT 40 went away after the tail wheel broke off and was replaced with a sullivan tail wheel bracket that raised the tail about an inch. Prop strikes are no more frequent than before.

RE: HOw much paint do I need?
There are some good posting on painting Glow models. Water based paint is popular among the gas set. Not so much with the glow engines. Butarate dope is not allthat hard to use and is fuel proof. According to some two part urathane serves as a fuel proof overcoat for other paint. Will it stick to water base? I do not know. Where do you Chapel Hill guys fly. My site is south of Fuquay. If you have time to go to the "fly for tots" event in September there will be lots of floks there to ask questions of. If you are interested I can show you some airplanes that have been painted with dope from Sig and one painted with Auto Rattle can. The rattle can so far has cost about as much as dope. four cans for a 40 size model. Jerry

RE: Safe voltage to fly
The problem was on the battery end of the cable. A solid push on an individule pin and the problem went away. The voltage jumped from 4.4 to 4.8 and the problem could not be made to come back. The pins have been released from the connector. They look OK and so does the crimp. It looks like this horse has been beat enough. Thanks for the help guys. Jerry

RE: Safe voltage to fly
Thanks Guver, I some times used an oversized power supply to find shorts on mother boards. Thanks for the reminder. These new fangled temp measuring things are probably better than my fingers at finding differences. So its off to HD to buy a new toy. The cable is identical to a servo extension cable. The thing that has made this interesting is that each of three servo extension cables gave me a slightly different voltage. As much as two tenths. What would have happened if this cable had been used as an elevator extension cable? The reading with this cable is about four tenths low. After it has been pummeled and beaten on in every way that we can think of I am going to cut the ends off and put new pins on. Each end can then be tested in someway and so can the middle. After a lot of testing it turns out that one of my three old batteries is bad. It will charge up to a good operating voltage and appears to work ok but by next morning it is down to 3.4 volts. P40 Driver, Rest assured that this is not going back in an airplane. The thing that bothers me is that there is not a good way to test extension cables and there are some that have been in my planes for five years and could be developing the same problem that this one has. RE: Safe voltage to fly
It took me two months to isolate a problem that looked like a bad pack. The pack which had some age on it only charged to about 5.1 volts. after one flight it was down to 4.9 and then another flight down to 4.8 even below by third flight of ten minutes. A new high quality 1100 nicad pack was installed in the plane which gave good results on a cycler. after a few flights this pack also looked liked it had gone to pot. It looked like three old packs had all died in the same week and the new one did not look so good. Time to look somewhere else. It turned out to be the cable that attached the Futaba tester to the battery. I have checked that cable with a high quality ohm meter good down to .01 ohms. It checks the same as the good cable. Put the cable back in the tester and the battery reads about .5 volts lower than with the good cable. What would have happened if that cable had been used as an extension cable between the battery and receiver? I am still puzzled as to what is going on there. It has got to be resistance in that cable somewhere. any thoughts on how to analyze the cable further.

RE: Magnetic building system
This past winter I attached a sheet of steel to a very flat table using 3M contact spray adhesive. The sheet metal has a slight wave at each end. This is in the metal or the build up of glue. The table is still flat according to a straight edge. Is there a way to remove the sheet metal without damaging the wood underneath? The center portion of the surface is long enough to build a 36" wing half. The puzzle is that it was first attached with epoxy and had the same problem. The epoxy let go after some gentle encouragement. The spray 3M was put down very carefully to avoid any problems with making the final surface wavy so I think the problem is in the metal itself.

RE: Model Airplane News, then and now.
The good old days were great. My first airplane was a Trixter Beam. It died on the fourth flight due to an internal failure. I took it home in a paper bag. My second was a livewire trainer. It died on the 24th flight. It had an aerodynamic problem. I saw another Livewire trainer do the same thing. Pappy Debolt had a problem with that plane that none of us understood. My third airplane was a "Gramps" scratch built from MAN plans. It carried four c cells and a 22 volt battery. It lived for a number of years. People got tired of watching it fly. It was rudder only and had to be flown until the fuel ran out. A fox 19 would go for a long time on 6 ozs of go juice. At least two airplanes went home in a bag every weekend or were lost forever drifting off into the sky never to be seen again. If our club had that kind of luck there would not be enough members to pay to cut the grass. It was a beautiful day here in NC. I just got back from the field, ran the last of my eighth gallon of fuel through a Pulse 40. I have no idea how many flights that is. Not one radio or aerodynamic problem to date. I still love to build. There is a Taurus almost ready for its maiden flight, an ultra sport being painted; I am experimenting with auto paint on that one and a trainer that is being built to experiment with different aileron hinging. To survive in model aviation in the 50s and early 60s you had to be technically skilled and very tenacious.

RE: unusual hinge construction
This looks good for elevators and rudders. It is very near what I described. Substitute carbon tube and music wire running the length of the control surface and that would be it. For an aileron a support would be needed near the center unless barn door type could be used. For a center support cut a slot about 1/16 of an inch wide through the leading edge of the control surface and a matching slot in the trailing edge of the fixed surface, wing, rudder or aileron. Now install a thin support with a hole drilled to match the music wire. The question is what material could be used that would not stretch or ware the bearing point. I am envious of the quality of work I see on this site. Two good examples are in this thread. It was my intention to start another kit this afternoon. Unfortunately the world had another project in mind. A tire rolled off of the rim of a piece of equipment that I used this morning and the repair effort ate up my airplane time.

RE: Debolt Cobra canopy
There is a debolt Cobra resting comfortable in my shop attic. The Canopy is in a shoebox. I have not looked at it lately but it is most likely OK. While we are on the subject is there a set of plans that includes the wing ribs. The kit plans do not include the rib templates. The original box is also in the attic. I sure would like to build another one. Just not willing to disassemble the wing to get the rib design. As I recall the canopy is very similar to the ones that come with the present day Tarus/Primus from home and hobby solutions. Jerry

unusual hinge construction
Some where in the past I ran across a hinge made by placing a carbon tube in the center of a leading edge of control surface that had been routed by a halfround bit. A cove bit was used to route the traling edge of the fixed surface. The two surfaces were clamped together and slices were made about 1/16 of inch wide to allow for the instalation of a fixed part in the stabilizer or fin. A hole was drilled in the fixed part to match a wire passed through the tube. The question is what material could be used to make the fixed part of the hinge? It would have to rsist wear and stretching from the music wire passing through the tube. Thanks guys

Does anyone know why Futaba does not reccomend the 9650 for airplanes. Only reccomended for surface and helicopters. "Can be used with 1/12 or 1/18 scale vehicles and electric helicopters" Are the nylon gears to weak for the vibration of glow engines? I have been considering using it for .20 size glow such as Flea Fly. Comments please.

RE: SIMLA BUILD THREAD
My experience with titebond on the doublers for a Primus. On the first one a weight was placed on them and they curled pretty badly. On the second one I got smart and clamped them between two pieces of 3/4 " furniture grade birch plywood with many hundred pounds of pressure. When the clamps came off the next day they went SSppoonnnig and curled just like the first ones. So much for clamps. See "RE: Phil Kraft's " post 80 for several suggestions on glueing doublers. doxilla suggested "laminating epoxy" which sounds like the most forgiving method. Is laminating epoxy the slow setting variety? This problem is one of the reasons that I have been reluctant to start building my KingAltair kit. Some experimenting with pre drying the titebond is certinly in order.

RE: Not Much Action On Here Anymore
I got my drivers lic. when I was 17. Gas was around 20cents a gallon. We would get together pool our dimes. Buy three gallons put the two smallest girls in the trunk and go to the drive in movie. Total cost for the evening, one buck. Lets just say the girls got in free. A trip to the flying field costs about 20 dollars. 8 for gas and about 12 for glow fuel. And the movies were worth watching.

RE: Building the Flea-Fly
Have you picked out your servos? One in the wing as the plan shows or one for each aileron? Are you going to use barn door style as in planes or go to strip style? If I ever get the primus finished this one may be next. Does anyone have a thought as to how much weight will be saved using modern electronics over the Kraft stuff shown? Today's 2.4 rx and two servos may weigh about what my old orbit servo weighed. Now let’s see a 1600 ma NIMH battery at less than half what a NiCad pack weighs. Could it be flown with an OS LA 15? Come to think of it there is a Kraft receiver and a couple of servos in a mason jar out in the barn with the lid screwed on tight to protect them from who knows what while I spent 30 years doing other things. Gotta buy some scales. If you are going to do barn door style ailerons please take lots of pictures and let us know your technique for cutting out the ailerons.
