RE: Glow Plugs..
I have 7 nitro's in my garage, engine sizes range from .18 up to .28. I run 20% nitro in all of them and some run better with hot plugs (generally my smaller engines) and some run better with cooler plugs. I haven't replace a glow plug in over a year in any of them. I've run over 2 gallons through an engine and not replaced a plug. I haven't seen any difference in reliability in cold vs. hot. Run a good tune on your motor and the plug will last a long time, that's what has worked for me. Generally speaking the lower the nitro the hotter the plug, but there are plenty of engines that are an exception to the rule. The best thing to do is try a wide range of plugs in your engine and see what it does best with,.
ORIGINAL: stoya789 i forgot to mention that duratrax products are "fly by night"! they constantly discontinue their products leaving customers stranded. basically their customer support is a joke. traxxas still sells and supports the products they made from day 1. they still sell stampedes, 4tec's, rustlers, etc. they even sell a "classic" style t-maxx based on the original release. bottom line is you know you won't be left in the dark when you buy a traxxas product.
duratrax products are 'fly by night'?, sounds like you know this firsthand, how about some examples of vehicles where this is true? Also, I love my traxxas vehicles, but come on, they DO NOT sell/support products they made from day one. I am into vintage traxxas nitro, have a nitro hawk and nitro buggy from the mid 90's. Many of the parts on those vehicles are NOT available anymore, no longer made, period.

RE: 2-speed trans
ORIGINAL: Dr. Blockhed I was looking through some upgrades for my ultra lx one buggy and came across a 2 speed trans. Anyone have any thoughts on putting a 2 speed in a buggy? I do run mostly on street/parking lots. I do some running on dirt/grass at a baseball field. I have the stock engine w/ a jp-3 pipe. Will I get a lot more pop from the start and still have good top end speed? Or am I just wasting my time and money (it costs about a hundred bucks)? Thanks for any help
It would be the best of both worlds, good acceleration coupled with good top speed. Personally, I would use the $100 to buy a used 21 on ebay, like a picco or something along those lines. I bought a used jpx21 on ebay for about $100 not too long ago. A motor like that will be a huge improvement over the stock motor in your buggy, so via rpm increase in the new motor you would probably have a higher top speed, probably equivalent to the 2spd coupled to a stock motor. motor change would also mean you now have a spare motor
are you refering to the connection between the header and pipe, and whether or not that is a universal connection? If so, for RTR type vehicles it is universal, as they typically use a standard silicon rubber pipe coupler between the pipe and header. If you use aftermarket tuned pipes, not always so. I use Jammin pipes and all of them have a matching header. Maybe you could use one of them on a different header, but not sure, probably not.

RE: Confused and Undecided
ORIGINAL: chicharito14 Hey guys! I'm kind of new to this, and i need your help please. I'm looking for an off road Nitro powered RC Buggy, and I have some questions. I was looking at some buggies on a couple sites and I ran into a couple questions. My price range is $130-$200. What is a good and reliable brand? Where can I buy fuel? How expensive is fuel? What's the difference between 1 and 2 speed transmissions? I've been looking at forums and have seen Lipo batteries a lot. What are Lipo batteries? I came across these buggies. Are they any good? http://www.rctoyhouse.com/1_10_Redcat_Shockwave_Nitro_RC_Buggy_p/gc-redcat-shockwave.htm http://www.rctoyhouse.com/Redcat_1_10_Tornado_S30_RC_Nitro_Gas_Buggy_p/gc-redcat-tornadobb-redgreen.htm http://www.rctoyhouse.com/Acme_Condor_Pro_Nitro_Gas_RC_Off_Road_Buggy_p/gc-a3002t-b.htm Thanks guys!
Reliable buggies: Ofna, Associated, XTM, they're all pretty tough as buggies are very strong by nature. Fuel can be purchased at a local hobby store, typically about $25/gallon for a decent 20% nitro fuel. If you're a weekend basher you'll get 1-2 weekends out of 1 gallon, unless you run like 8 hours a day then you will of course get less. 1spd vs 2spd: in the case of a 1spd you get the benefit of a center differential. This allows for better handling, but don't take that the wrong way, a 2spd will handle fine too. I would stick to a 1spd because in a buggy you're not going to have an issue with speed, it will probably fly with a 1spd. Lipo batteries are one of the newer battery technologies. Before there were NiCd (nickel-cadmium), then came NiMH (nickle-metal hydride). LiPo batteries (lithium polymer I think) can run longer and deliver a pretty good kick relative to their size.

I would welcome anyone, even if they came in with a toys-r-us car that runs on 8 AA batteries. It's all about having fun with what you have. I've found that a big part of this hobby is socializing with others, meeting people and getting to know them. Making new friends is priceless, especially when they share the love of RC like you do. Too bad the people at your track didn't see the value in that, it's their loss so the hell with em.

What I think I'm seeing is totally normal. When you're at top dead center, there is always that little bit of slop when you rotate the crank forward/backwards before the piston comes back down. How does it run? If it runs fine then I think you're worrying about nothing.

I have always thought thunder tiger and OS were good.
I like Picco engines, those are the ones I have the most experience with. I mentioned the JPX 21 (Jammin) earlier, not sure who makes the jammin motors though, my faint memory wants me to say Picco as well. Speaking of JPX, there is also a JPX 28 which is full of torque, more than you need, great motor. I've heard Novarossi are good but have never messed with them. OS has some decent engines and make some good RTR upgrades. Example, OS has the OS18CVR which comes in many versions to fit about any 1/10th scale car. It typically gives a good power increase over a stock motor.
ORIGINAL: stoya789 .28ci is 4.5884cc which is ~40% larger engine displacement than 3.3 so of coarse can go faster.
Not necessarily. In this hobby, engine displacement is not too great a predictor for whether one car will go faster/be more powerful than another. Case in point, take a decent .21ci size engine such as the Jammin 21. It will blow away about any .28ci (or bigger) engine that comes standard (RTR) on a vehicle. There are a whole slew of .21's like this.
ORIGINAL: Foxy I hate to be pedantic about this, but I'm afraid my phrasing of this is 'accurate', while yours is 'misleading'.
I'm afraid I have to completely disagree with you. I did nothing but provide factual information. With a 2spd you can put a 2nd gear on there that would never work on a single speed unless you didn't mind totally killing your bottom end. A single speed with the same gearing will go the same top speed, I get that, but with that as the only gear the car is worthless. That is my point. You provided a 2spd scenario where the 2nd gear is the same gearing as a resonable gearing on a single speed car. This never happens, the 2nd gear on all the 2spd's I've seen is way too high to work on a single speed car. So, that is most definitely a piece of information that was skewed to support your opinion, hence "misleading"

RE: Hey I'm new! Whats a good RC to start with?
ORIGINAL: Foxy Also, why o why do people believe that a 2-speed makes cars faster. IT DOESN'T. It improves acceleration, not top speed. If you have 2 identical cars, one with a 2 speed which is 14/28+15/24, and the other single speed 15/24. Which one is going to be faster? Neither, all things being equal they will do the same speed. The truck with the 2 speed will get there faster though.
Not the best example as it's a little misleading with respect to the gearing of a 2 speed. I've had quite a bit of experience with 2 speeds and rarely if ever is the 2nd gear a similar gearing to a single speed as you used in your example. On the majority of 2 speeds out there (every one I have seen) the 2nd gear is one that would be way too high for a single speed, would kill acceleration bigtime. Also, the clutch bells can be separated by 4 teeth or more. A truggy I had: 12/65 + 17/60. Had awesome off the line acceleration and top speed was insane. Same truggy with a single speed wouldn't be able to have a 17/60 because it would take forever to accelerate off the line, totally impractical. Sure, you'll get to that top speed......in a week or two. So bottom line, for a basher who wants the best of both worlds (best possible acceleration + best possible top speed), a multispeed transmission will be superior to a single speed.

RE: Air Leak?
I've used spit to see how hot an engine is, but not for tuning. I tune simply by listening to the engine. Once it runs smoothly both off the line and at full throttle, I leave it alone. I'm in my 25th year of doing this and it has never let me down. Temp guns are for the trash as far as I'm concerned. There is no ideal operating temperature that applies to all glow engines, they all run at different temperatures. I have some that like to run cool, barely boil water on the head when running great. Then I have some that run scalding hot and love it. Give me any engine and I can have it up and running on a perfect tune in less than 10 minutes, no temperature gun required.

RE: is this true?
there's more tinkering in nitro, but in my opinion, it's a negligible amount relative to the amount of time you're able to run. If you're a beginner in nitro it may take more time during the learning curve, but once you figure it out (and it's not that hard), you're golden. I typically run all day (6-8 hours) and the total time I spend playing with the carb during that day is probably 15 minutes or less. 15 minutes out of 6-8 hours is maybe 3% of my time, negligible IMO. Most of my down time is replacing parts, but I beat the hell out of my vehicles, both electric and nitro.
