RE: Modules and Receivers for 9c super
3DAP, Something else you might consider, if you have the time, is that XPS is releasing a 900m system - that will be a constant frequency hopping system. Supposedly more robust than the XPS 2.4. If you are not in a big hurry, you might drag your feet a bit and see how that system shakes out. Think I'll do so. They don't have a release date yet, but they claim the system is designed, built, and awaiting FCC certification.

RE: Major Glitch in a Futaba SS system!!
Well, I think I've figured out how Futaba is going to handle the ZGUID problem. They'll merely continue doing what they are now doing. They will stand by the Service Advisory, that shows they know units will go to ZGUID in the field without admitting it's so. They will never explain said advisory nor admit that units will go ZGUID in the field. They'll continue to maintain that they can't reproduce the problem. They will do all they can to maintain the illusion that the problem is just a "few" that were shipped that way from manufacturing. They will continue the hobby store testing program and advise that found ZGUID units be sent in for service. These units will be fixed, with details of how they are "serviced" unexplained other than "the unique GUID was restored," or some such. Futaba will patiently wait as units go ZGUID, they are identified as so by the owners, and then sent in for service. There will be no recall nor any admission of possible flaw. There probably won't be any further official statement of any kind, other than "send your unit for service if it tests ZGUID or you are unsure of it's proper operation." Eventually, they'll get a majority of the units back for a proper fix. And the ones they don't they'll leave in the field. That's it folks. I believe that's all you're going to get. And it's an absolutely brilliant strategy on their part. But, I wouldn't want Bax's job as it might get a bit rough come spring time. Now, if I'm wrong, and Futaba actually comes clean and recalls these units, I'll eat crow. But, I seriously doubt I'll have to do so.

RE: Major Glitch in a Futaba SS system!!
[quote]If there are 5000 fast units and only a few problem units, then this is pretty damn good. IMO. [/quote] Unfortunately, it appears that all units sold may be problem units - at least the FASST 6EX, 7C, and TM-7. And while the Futaba apologists like to poo-pa the issue by pointing out the few problems we've heard of so far, the numbers of ZGIUD units is on the climb. Consequently, negative incidents with the systems will possibly climb also. Why? Because the R/C forums presence is but a portion of the R/C world. Many R/C fliers don't visit the forums - and have little or no contact with people who do. There are bound to be incidents with this equipment that we don't hear of (so we can't add to the count). Some users, possibly many users, of the systems in question will not hear of the ZGUID issue, or how to watch for it, until it is possibly too late. Early reports on Hobby store testing show some stores are not aware of the issue - or have a lackadaisical attitude towards the matter. Are such Hobby stores going to track down the buyers of effected systems and give them the service advisory from Futaba, or tell the buyers how to test and fly with caution? Is Tower, who ships world-wide, going to contact all their buyers and let them know? Seems unlikely, especially since these units are still for sale - at least in the U.S, and at Tower. Is the sky falling? Of course not! However, is the matter serious with potential to cause bodily harm and injury? Yes. A more aggressive approach from Futaba, to inform all owners of effected units and provide a permanent fix would most likely help in avoiding, or limiting, any serious incidents.

Futaba has yet to admit that the TXs can change to ZGUID in the field - attempting to maintain the myth that the problem is merely a "few" ZGUID TXs that were shipped that way from manufacturing, nothing more.

RE: Whats the most common cause of a deadstick
Fuel foaming is not a myth. If one has not seen it, it merely means they have yet to experience it. Some people just have to doubt that which they have not seen for themselves. Fuel foaming can definitely make it difficult to tune an engine properly - or keep it running if the foaming is significant. I've flown SPADs and profiles with 4-strokes. I had one SPAD profile setup that initially shook so much the entire tank looked to be filled with nothing but foam. Really funny situation as the guys couldn't understand how I kept the engine running with so much foam in the tank. I've never used Armorall in my fuel. Even though many guys say it won't have a negative impact on an engine, I just don't like the thought of adding such to my fuel if I don't need too. [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD741&P=7]This Dubro Tank Filter[/link] has worked great for me - to stop the bubbles/air from leaving the tank and getting to the engine. It worked on the profile mentioned above. The engine was 100% reliable - keeping it's tuning and never quiting, all while the tank was foaming like crazy. I use them in all my setups and foam in the tank is never an issue. If one likes to contribute to O.S. via their high prices, they have a [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXXF25&P=ML]Bubbleless Clunk[/link] as well.

RE: Yamada fuel injection
There are many YS engines in scale planes. The only reason some guys think they are only for pattern is because pattern guys were the first to use them in a big way - as they were the only one willing or able to spend that much money on an engine. But, that was all some time ago. 4-strokes have come along ways in recent years - especially the Saito and YS line. Springer, the power bands on YS engines are superb. That's why so many of us 3D guys love ours. Definately, not peaky. Let me put it this way ... if I was going to invest the ungodly amount of time needed to scratch build a 1/4 scale Fokker DV11 and was planning on using a glow engine, I wouldn't even consider anything but a YS to power it. I've had 2 dead-sticks running YS engines. Once when I ran out of fuel. The second was when my fuel line cracked open - an old piece of tubing I knew needed replacing but hadn't done so yet. Yeah, I'd say my YS engines are pretty reliable - just what I'd want in an airplane I spent many, many hours building.

RE: Yamada fuel injection
Springer YS (Yamada) are great engines. They have a few special needs and tuning procedures that are different from most other engines. If one takes the small amount of time needed to learn about them, YS engines will bring great joy and satisfaction. Unfortunately, many guys don't bother to learn dick about them - running them without filters, trying to run them without the check-valve and/or leaking tanks and lines. And then they crank on the needles like they're tuning a 2-stroke - ususally always tuning by ear instead of spending the few bucks for a tach. Then they whine to Dave Shadel in the YS Support forum about how their engine is messed-up. He tells them to send it to service. Then when they get the engine back they still can't get it running decently (cause they haven't learned anything yet) and take to bitching about how poor YS engines are. Nothing hard about them if a guy can teach himself - and will take the time to do so. BUT, the biggie for you may be Nitro. Some guys have had luck running low nitro content fuel in a YS. But from my experience and knowledge I can tell you, you'll only be asking for headaches if you run under 20% nitro. Now from what I've gathered, nitro is hard to get and/or expensive where you're at. If this be the case, you may be better off with a Saito. Where the higher nitro fuels make the Saito run much stronger, they seem to run quite reliably on lower nitro fuels. Some guys claim good luck with 10% and I've even heard of a rare case or two of 5% nitro. My recommendation: don't buy a YS unless you are prepared to feed it 20-20 fuel - all synthetic or 30% heli fuel. If you're prepared to do this and learn some new things, go for it! YS engines are very, very sweet in any type air frame - scale, 3D, funflyers, pattern, or even trainers if one can afford the dollar risk. The trick is to prop it right for the type of airframe and flight performance you desire. [quote]ORIGINAL: springer What I'm looking for is reliability, power and compactness. Does the Yamada fit the bill?[/quote] Given what I wrote above, yes - most definately. I have no experience with the Laser so I can't compare it with Saito or YS.

RE: YS 63 FZ-S or Saito 72?
tuwood, I have 2 of the YS .63S engines - one is currently on a Katana V2. They both purr like kittens - and roar like tigers when I hammer the throttle. Never have had a dead stick or hiccup with either of them. Both only had enough bench run break-in to insure I had a good/reliable low idle - which took a half a tank of fuel. Then I put them in the air and flew them. I don't believe in many-tanks-on-the-bench break-in. I break 'em in like I plan to fly them. Transition slowed on both of them at about the 1 and 3 gallon mark. A slight tweak (1/4 to 3/8 turn in) on the regulator screw sweetened them right back up. Before you install the engine, go over all the bolts and make sure they are tight. Most of mine needed a small, partial turn for snug. Be sure and use a good fuel filter. It only takes a small spec of crude to mess up the diaphram in the regulator. Be sure you have a bullet proof fuel system. The engine develops a lot of pressure in the tank - and the engine needs the pressure. So make everything tight and leak free. The check valve is a must. Be sure and install it in the proper direction. When you refuel, be sure and open the vent/pressure side line first or you'll get a fuel bath. Don't use castor. It'll eventually gum up the regulator. And yes I know some guys like to run 10 and/or 15% fuel - but I've never understood why one would buy a performance engine and then skimp a few bucks on the fuel it needs to run at its best. Use YS 20/20 fuel and your engine will perform the way it was designed to. It'll keep it really clean inside also. I recently had a radio hit on a Katana GS at takeoff. The plane nosed almost straight in, into the asphalt runway, from about 20 feet. Bent the crank shaft on one of my .63s. When I dis-assembled it I was amazed at how clean and shiny the inside was - even though the engine has 10 or 11 gallons of fuel through it. There was no build-up of any kind ... anywhere. None of the typical build up that I've come to expect when I open a castor fed 2-stroke. Gobs it was pretty inside! Just like new. There'll be nothing but YS 20/20 fed to my YS engines. The engine is all back together again with a new crank and front bearing. Runs wonderfully. Just like before. Remember that the low-end screw works the reverse of most other engines. Clockwise is richer. Other than maybe checking to see where it's set at, by counting the clockwise turns to gently seat it, try using the factory low-end setting for your initial start up. Here's one of the better tuning sheets for the YS engines. You might consider printing it and putting it in your field box. [link=http://ysperformance.com/html/instructions.htm]YS Engines General Instructions[/link] I like the APC 13 x 4 Wide on the .63 equipped Katana.
