RE: Need some expert help cox style motor
If I understand this correctly, the engines won't even run off a prime. I think you're dealing with a compression problem. Stick the engine glow head and cylinder upside down into some fuel, do not submerged the exhaust ports, rotate the crankshaft to top dead center. If you see bubbles coming out where the head should be sealed, there's your problem. Other things to consider are, combustion chamber to large causing low compression ratio, or the piston cylinder fit is to loose. You may want to try posting this question at, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/049Collectors/

RE: New to the world of cox engines
I would suggest disassembling the engine and scraping out the inside of the piston, and around the piston-connecting rod ball socket. I disassembled a previously run engine and found 4 large ferrous metal pieces laying in the bottom of the crank case. Then I started taking apart new Surestart engines, they all had metal particles stuck inside piston. when you reassemble it give everything a heavy coating of castor oil. Check out the "Cox reed valve FAQ" thread, http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3747940/anchors_9137938/mpage_7/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9137938 for a suggestion about taming the needle valve problem.

Here's another video from the same guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHC3_OAbmGo It's hard to tell if this is being throttled or choked. I have been working with surestarts with exhaust restricting throttle rings. Some of the engines will sputter away at 3500 RPMs for several minutes while other engines may die at 5500 RPM.

RE: Cox Reed Valve FAQ
ORIGINAL: Tom Nied Do the Sure Starts benefit with a piece of tubing on the needle valve to create a better seal? The reason I ask is when starting one tonight, I noticed when I pushed down on the needle it sped up and screamed a higher pitch.
Surestart engines suffer from a bad needle valve spray bar fit. My solution was a piece of Dubro small silicone tubing, cut 7/16 of an inch long, and a piece of vinyl house siding with a 3/32nd inch hole drilled in it. This will do three things, 1 stops air from being sucked in, 2 stops the needle from springing back when adjusted, and 3 prevents the needle from self adjusting itself from vibration. When installing this, lubricate the top of the spray bar, and the end of the silicone tubing. Push the needle straight into the spray bar and rotate until the threads finally catch. Do not wiggle the needle valve around, as you will bend the tip of it, push it straight in and keep turning.

RE: comparing radio range checks. Your thoughts
I had a few crashes because of bad receivers, that were not detected during collapsed antenna testing. Now, I always use extended antenna testing. My girlfriend sits in one corner of the field with the transmitter, and I walk the plane all the way across the field as far away as I can get, approximately 900 feet. If my radio gear passes that then I feel it is safe to fly.

However, when I checked his posting times, his previous post was approximately 11 hours earlier, therefore violating the "one post in 24 hours rule". So I had to ignore his correct name post.

Are you absolutely positive that the propeller was not oval before you started using it? Try another propeller and see if the same thing happens. You might get more response to this question if you posted it in the engines forum.

RE: Not halfA but still relevent. Prop safety always!
I had two friends that momentarily lost their brains: One stuck his hand into the front of an old 14 inch brass blade fan that was running on high speed. The other stuck his hand under a lawn mower to adjust something, all he had to do was release his grip on the handlebar and the safety lever would have killed the engine. In both cases lots of blood, stitches and skin grafting later they told me there story. In the days when I pitted for rat race teams, I learned to tape up my fingers with medical tape before the race.

Give away Surestart RC contest.
I went to the local animal shelter and bought myself a used dog. She is a nine month old, Papillon/Yorkshire mix, weighing in at about 4.5 pounds. I have already named the dog, and thought it would be fun to give a Surestart with a throttle ring, to the first post that correctly guesses the dogs name. There are two rules: 1. Only one name guess per post. 2. Only one post in 24 hours. If there is no winner after one week, I will post a clue.

RE: Speaking of changes - fuel
CP, most of us are stuck buying what ever the local hobby store has, or buying off the Web. Will you please tell us where you get your ingredients?, names, addresses, phone numbers, Web addresses, e-mail addresses. I'm sure, if it was possible, to just step out the door and meet the local chemical truck each day on his way past, we would all be doing that. But that's just not the way it is. So using what is available, and altering what is available, are the most feasible options for most of us. And how about a special permit to buy certain ingredients? Some people have skid marks on their record and may not be allowed to purchase some ingredients, or maybe they live in Themiddleofnoplace, Wyoming and would have to pay astronomical shipping fees. Thanks.

Trinity Platinum 30% nitro has only 8% lube, add 11.293oz castor oil to a half gallon to get 21.8% lube and 25.5% nitro. Try Arty's fuel calc. spreadsheet, it's great.
