RE: University of Alaska at Anchorage
I went to UAA for a year after high school. I did the private pilot ground school at their facility on Merrill Field, the instructor was good and they had nice facilities and sims. I don't think that they have their own airplanes. If I remember right you take the ground schools with UAA and fly with one of the local FBO's. I transfered to Embry Riddle in Prescott, AZ and did Aerospace Engineering. Their engineering program is excellent, I personally was not impressed with the flight program... they ground all of the airplanes if there is a cloud in the sky or if the cross wind is over 10 knots etc... It's so restrictive I don't see how their graduates could be prepared for the real world. On the other hand their classroom training can't be beat. If you go to riddle I'd recomend getting your CFI before you get there, then major in Profesional Aeronautics and teach while you're there... A couple guys I knew did that and they spent far less money and graduated with twice as much time as the guys that majored in Aeronautical Science and did their flying with Riddle.

Yeah that's the waivered aerobatic box at Borrego Springs (L08) it's nice to have an emergency landing site that close when doing low level aerobatics.

RE: Rutan Voyager 90 degree roll
Give the guy a break... the blame for his misunderstandings rests fully with his instructor. This is a good example of why spin training should never have been replaced with "spin avoidance". Ty Frisby Aerobatic CFI Sunrise Aviation www.sunriseaviation.com

RE: Sport Pilot
That is VERY cool... I don't know if my computer is fast enough for online formation, but I need to look into it. Hey send me an email acropilot_ty@yahoo.com I'd love to figure out how to get that formation sim flight going. Ty By the way, things are going great, I got to fly an Edge at nationals so I've got a smile that'll take several months to wear off!!

RE: Sport Pilot
This is Ty from Sunrise... It all started with models and flight sims, so I continue to visit this site and chime in now and again. I know a lot of Bretts, but from your website I'm guessing you are the Brett I met at Paso Robles. You've got some very impressive formation shots (sim...-join... the sims are great for formation aerobatics without the risk. Ty

RE: Good Books?
Introduction to flight is the best book I know of, another good book for visulization is "an illistrated guide to aerodynamics" If you are going to be designing wings then you need "theory of wing sections" it is the best book on wing theory, and is essential during wing design. Ty

RE: 1-1/4 spin?
On the 1-1/4 turn spin you will also need to hold some rudder on the downline to keep it from dragging a wing, if you spin right you will recover and then put some right rudder back in to get the wings parallel to the horizon. Ty

My favorite is the picture of Jon Nash's edge with the smoke in a circle around it. I'm a little biased since I was on his pit crew that day and flew his extra 300 down in formation with him in the edge Ty

RE: Use entire wing as aileron?
I had a friend with a little glider that used this setup... "Wingerons" It would roll like crazy, but it was also a tiny little plane so the loads were light. I don't remember the name of the kit, but that might be a good starting point to see how they set up the control linkage and structures. Ty

RE: Surface finish on wings.
I agree that the optimum positioning of the turbulator is not at the thickest point of the wing, but it must be placed before the natural transition which almost always occurs after the thickest point at low reynolds numbers, so a conservative location is the high point... The turbulator could be moved back from there through experimentation. My experience with turbulators has been in wind tunnels, In one case the reynolds number was about 50,000 and a strip of masking tape placed at the high point increased L/D max by something like 40%... it was dramatic. In other cases we would coat the leading edge of models with fine sand to force turbulent flow in an attempt to "simulate" higher reynolds numbers then attainable in our 3ft. x 4ft. 120 mph wind tunnel, and again drag went down, lift went up every time. These wind tunnel models always have nice smooth surfaces and I think that they suffer from laminar separation because they are "too smooth". I have placed turbulator strips on models, but it's so hard to tell what the difference is because there are too many variables and no instrumentation.... They have so much power to weight ratio that small aerodynamic tweaks are not noticable. I'm sure that such experiments on a model glider would be noticable, but I haven't flown gliders much. So the question is, what are you going to do with this plane? Why do you need to lower the drag? is it a powered racing plane, or a glider, or an endurance contest...? What airfoil are you using? What speed do you anticipate? And finally what is the chord of the wing? If I was designing a model for some type of contest I would use all of this information to try and predict the point of natural transition, then I would locate a turbulator 5% chord before that point.
