RE: What motor is this
Well -if the ignition runs fine - then I would fly it til it doesn't. If the included ignition is a CH unit, and you wanted to get away from the mechanical advance, you just need to figure out a way to lock your timing ring at ~27-30degrees Before top dead center. follow CH's instructions here: http://www.ch-ignitions.com/CHinst.html. You can purchase the separate Syncro spark module for about $30. Even the mechanical advance and syncrospark units aren't absolutely needed - the engine should run without it - but the advance units retard the timing at idle to help with idle characteristics and starting. Edit: And yes, walbro carbs are pretty easy to rebuild and maintain. Zama's are pretty similar. Those are the only 2 brands I'm familiar with. there will be a model # stamped on the carb somewhere, and then all you need to do is start searching for a rebuild kit - Ebay is a good source, I'm sure there are others.

RE: What motor is this
If you're paying $250, then I agree that I think you're probably getting a good deal for a 50cc engine, even if you have to rebuild the carb and ignition. the manual advance ignitions aren't all that bad, but the CH Syncro spark unit is relatively cheap if you wanted to fix your timing and let the EI do the advancing.

RE: What motor is this
well - without knowing the normal performance of those engines, the biggest question would be the displacement. For example - the Brison 2.4 would fly a 16# plane aerobatically if you managed your momentum properly - it wouldn't provide unlimited vertical, but it wouldn't be a complete dog. The Brison 3.2 would be better suited for that weight range. If that engine you're looking at is the 3.2 - then you might want to find out what carb is on it - and compare model#'s to something like the other 50cc engines on the market. Might be that you could move to a larger bore carb and et a little more power out of it. Plus if the prev owner had too big or too small of a prop on it, that could have hurt vertical performance as well. What kind of $$$ are you going to be able to pick it up for - that might help us determine if you're getting a deal or not.

RE: What motor is this
The brisons used the Sachs parts, and the sachs engines looked very similar. My guess is a sachs or some earlier variant as well. EDIT Sorry didn't see TKG's post above. Yes - your pic is of a J&A Engineering engine - here's a link to their website. http://www.j-aengineering.com/page26.html If it's a Sachs jug and internals - it's basically the same as a Brison. to my knowledge Brison and BME are not related - Brison uses sachs parts, and BME uses a lot of Echo parts. Both make nice engines - I have a Brison 2.4 and it's a great motor.

RE: Brillelli 36cc
I owed a buddy an engine for his Great Planes Super Chipmunk - so we ordered up a 36 from scott. The kit is designed for a 1.20 2 atroke, but calls for something like 16ounces of nose weight with that motor (in the manual!!) We figure theres no reason to waste nose weight with lead, and slapped the 36 in - he was running an 18x8 Master airscrew classic. We took no tach readings, but it idled down low without loading up, and turned up strong. Required minimal cowl mutilation. The engine runs like a sewing machine. Smooth. Thee are several Brillellis in our club, we all love em. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Good looking bird Jim - what size spinner is on it now? Looks like you'll almost need one 1.5" larger to fit the contour of the front of the cowling.

RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
I got 4 good flights on mine with the new Brillelli 46 today, and then that wasn't so nice - apparently I lost a lower cowl bolt, and it allowed the cowl to vibrate enough to pop the other lower cowl mounting block free of the firewall. This resulted in my cowling moving forward enough to rub the backside of the prop. I came in for a touch & go and as I turned it around to take off noticed the cowl looked jacked up in the front. The result is that now I have a symmetrical groove sanded away from the trailing edge on each blade of my of my brand new TBM 21x8 prop, and a 3" - 4" section of my cowling lip that is worn smooth down to the glass. It's intact and I plan on fixing it and repainting, but I can't seem to source anywhere that sells Ultracote #885 Midnight Blue paint? No one seems to carry any ultracote paint now. A web search did come up with PPG mixing instructions to have a PPG paint supplier mix up a quart - but other than that, I can't find anyone that is selling the stuff. It seems that there are plenty of H9 planes being sold, and plenty of other brands that use Ultracote covering - why would they discontinue their paint lines? EDIT: Ok I found one place - wholesaleplanes.com that stated they had the Midnight Blue in stock, but it was discontinued once sold out. $4.78 a can, but add a $8.95 shipping fee on that and I'm still getting screwed. If anyone was interested - here's the link to the site that had the PPG mixing instructions for Ultracote: http://www.charlesriverrc.org/articles/construction/ppgpaintmatch.htm

No offense - but that post without details is equivalent to staning outside a restuarant you don't like and yelling at the people dining there not to go in. Personally, my Yak had a cracked canopy that I didn't notice until after I had the rest of the plane assembled. I called them and was politely directed to the online warranty info form. I filled it out and faxed it in - 8 days later I had a new canopy sitting in my workshop - didn't have to return the broken canopy, no questions asked.

RE: GSP Giles 202
RCSuperstor sold the same plane as the Cap-X under the Extreme Aircraft Cap-Xtreme name - they don't carry it anymore, but might have some leftover parts? www.tntlandinggear.com can make custom gear to your specs. I'll go out tonight and measure the gear on my Cap-X and give you the dimensions. (The Cap-X gear gives the Giles more prop clearance and a wider track that made it an awesome landing plane. The Cap-X gear was also a 1 piece gear, so you had to cut it down the middle for installation into the Giles - if memory serves I think you actually had to cut a small section out of the middle to make it fit.

Brillelli 36GT - rear exhaust would mean less cutting of the cowling. I would expect a scale looking 3 blade would be possible with that engine - something in the 17-18" range.

RE: CMP Giles
There is reportedly a slightly updated version of the CMP giles - I have seena picture of one around here somewhere that has blue where the other is green. Someone said the newer ones are a little lighter. All I can speak from is mine, and it was not Ultracote - it matches the traits of the chinacote I have gotten on other airframes, while the colors most closely match Ultracote/Oracover. It took a bit of work, and several re-ironings, but mine was staying down relatively well. I had upgraded to Cap-X gear as well on mine, and the landings were perfect - it just stuck when you put it on the ground. Unfortunately Chip Hyde is out of business (Or at least not doing ARF's anymore) Chief Aircraft might have the remaining stock of his airframes.

Mine was pretty well constructed - very good paint on the fiberglass parts. It was a tad heavy with the light 26cc gas engine I had in it. It would probably be a little batter with a OS 1.60 or a Saito 1.80 / Ys 1.40. there are huge threads on this airframe around here - here's one: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3171073/anchors_3171073/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#3171073

My Alitalia one seems decent too - even though it's possible the Alitalias were the RC Superstore Cap - it all still seems like chinacote to me. I went over everything with my iron before, during and after the build. Now if I can just get it in the air.

RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
I'm agreeing withe the others here - mine balanced nicely with the Brison, which is ~.3 lb lighter than the Brillelli 46. My servos are Futaba 3305 MG in the stock locations, although I only used one per alieron to cut a little weight. My main battery is an Expert 2700 6.0v that I mounted just under the front of the turtledeck on a tray that I built across the fuse formers. I was runnong a Vortech 3" spinner, with the engine spaced out for the prop hub to be 6.25" from the firewall (Personally I think 6 - 3/8" to 6.5" would look a little better, and I like the looks of a 3.5" spinner a little better. I read somewhere on troybuiltmodels.com that moving 1oz from the tail of a plane is the equivalent of 3 ounces at the nose. Pull that servo out and you've just saved 2.5-3 ounces in the tail, so it should 7.5 - 9 ounces at the nose of the plane.

RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
I pulled my Brison 2.4 off the Yak last night to move it over to my Cap-X. The Brillelli 46 RTF with mounts weighed 3.64lb on my scale, the Brison 2.4 weighed 3.34 without standoffs. It should still be about 15.3 - 15.5lb ready to fly - I am also upsizing my spinner to a 3.5" - the 3" I was running didn't look right, plus it fits the Cap-X. I might put the Yak on a Diet - I think I might be able to get it under 15 with carbon gear/wingtube/tailtube/carbon tailwheel/carbon spinner.

RE: 1.20 Edge Review, the beginnings
5/32" axle should work for that plane fine. I generally find that all of the common 5/32" axles (Dubro/GP) insert into a 11/32" hole in the landing gear leg. The diameter of the shaft that the wheel and collars slip onto is up to you. If you get 5/32" axles, then you need collars and wheels that fit. For that plane, 5/32" should work fine, but if you're worried about breaking one, move up to 3/16" axles, and drill your wheel hubs out to fit.

RE: Chip Hyde's Cap-X - Building & Flying
The hardware I used from mine was just the control horns - and I was short one of those so I had to install my own rudder horn. I am using the stock fuel tank as well with a dubro gas conversion stopper. I only paid $209 US for the plane though, and I was pretty much aware that I wasn't going to use much of the hardware in the kit anyway. On my 70 inch and up planes, I prefer to supply my own hardware - just for piece of mind. Lots of Giant Scale ARF's come with limited or no hardware, as most of the builders like to set them up with hardware they prefer and trust.
