RE: 150 meter rule.
I have used Google Earth for the same thing as it has a built in ruler. I have been at this field out at the center marker while an F3A pilot flew and gave a raised arm to the caller whenever he flew beyond me. Very interesting experience.

RE: Pipe for DLE 35 RA
I think there are very few actually in the hands of customers and perhaps none running on a pipe yet. I asked a US importer for the exhaust port dimensions and got no response. A simple sketch like the one below is all that is needed. Until the exhaust port is known it's tough to come up with a header. Most likely [link=https://www.krumscheid-metallwaren.de/neu/showarticlelist.php?action=list&lang=EN&cat=SBS_S]KS[/link] has a header part available that is a close enough fit to work with little or no modification. You just have to sort through their many variations.
ORIGINAL: skip1320 You have Part number for stub/header you modified,Thanks
The KS website is a bit confusing since there are often two part numbers listed on the same page for the same item. The number listed first seems to be what they really go by. I picked this [link=https://www.krumscheid-metallwaren.de/neu/showarticledetails.php?lang=EN&anr=1342]1342[/link] stub since I wanted to use the smallest 20mm tubing. KS lists [link=https://www.krumscheid-metallwaren.de/neu/showarticledetails.php?lang=EN&anr=1461]1461[/link] as fitting the DLE 20 but this looks totally wrong. For use with 22mm tubing [link=https://www.krumscheid-metallwaren.de/neu/showarticledetails.php?lang=EN&anr=1422]1422[/link] and [link=https://www.krumscheid-metallwaren.de/neu/showarticledetails.php?lang=EN&anr=1427]1427[/link] look like they may fit with less modification, just slot the bolt holes a bit.

RE: Home made header supplies???
I've bought unadvertised KS parts from DA but if they don't respond then that's a big roadblock. Aircraft International also stocks some stuff but probably just to support the engines they sell. Probably the same for DA. The don't list 20mm sizes for example. http://www.aircraftinternational.com/Products/Exhaust/KSCustomHeaderParts.aspx I just got this DLE 20 stuff from KS in Germany along with a bunch of other stuff. It took about 2-3 weeks to the US. Their web store never gives any kind of order confirmation or any other kind of communication like shipping cost but it does work. I was slightly surprised by the final cost being a little more than what I had thought it would be. KS covers a wide variety of engines so even if yours is not specifically covered you can usually find an exhaust stub that is close enough to your engine to work with minor dremel work. You just have to look through the dimensions they list for each one. The DLE exhaust stub in the picture is not made for a DLE 20. I wanted to use 20mm tubing so I modified a stub made for a different engine. The price of silver is sky high right now and that has raised the cost of the silver solder.
ORIGINAL: microdon2 Aerobar \ Sandy Jain - Sounds like using that diode is a good option if you already have the extra battery and swith \ charging jacks. If not, then the Ibec seems like a good - somewhat cheaper - and lighter alternative to a dedicated ignition battery. Agreed?
Depending on your choices and sources of switches and batteries the price may start be be comparable although I don't see it being cheaper. I make my own packs to get the type and number of wires/connectors I want. It also happens to be cheaper than a commerically finished pack. The price of the Ultra IBEC has dropped quite a bit since I last looked at it. If the Ultra IBEC has features that you value highly then the price may be irrelevant. Even though I look for great values I am far from penny wise and pound foolish. I have spent lavishly on RC stuff when I thought it was worth it. Having been frugal were it makes sense makes the occasional lavish purchase much easier.

On the other hand, for the $45 purchase price you could instead get about 1400 of [link=http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Fairchild-Semiconductor/1N4007/?qs=ZbYWOjW8mGpgsSEErKxdmfUH0OoFY7oB]these[/link]. That's enough to equip 700 planes with a ignition voltage reducer suitable for LIFE type batteries. If you only need enough for a few planes then your local electronics shop can set you up for a buck or two. Using these with a separate ignition battery will increase your plane's weight by a few ounces over the Ultra IBEC. If that's a problem then there are usually other, cheaper ways to save that much weight. Nothing wrong with either choice, just letting you know there are choices.

Have you ever seen a prop shatter not very cool... im not talking crap just giveing the facts
The amount of money spent is irrelevant. APC makes props in sizes and pitches that are not common in wood props, especially for pattern plane use. APC props work great on the YS engines which are in the same power neighborhood as a 35cc gas engine. The multi bolt hubs on little gas engines are there so you can get that big boy look on a little engine. They are not needed in this size engine. A single bolt hub allows the use of ANY prop so it would make more sense than the multi bolt setup which creates a pointless limitation. I have used APC since they first came out. Never had one shatter or seen anyone else shatter one. One the other hand I have seen plenty of guys break the bolts on a multi bolt hub. I don't blame the hub though, user error.

RE: Gas engine cooling and test results
Nice diagrams. Another method to accomplish the baffling on fully enclosed engines is to glue foam rubber to the inside the cowling. It is easily shaped as needed so that when the cowl is in place the foam almost touches the cooling fins, forcing air through the fins. The foam is light and handles vibration well. I used white foam from the fabric department of the local Mega Mart. A quick blast of black spray paint and it disappears inside the cowling.

RE: #4 ignition module of DLE20
I can update my radio and chargers over the internet with a USB cable. If Rcexl made their ignitions like that, you could pick the advance curve you wanted. Better yet, a user customizable curve with handy app to tune out the rough spots where your aircraft vibrates. Even better, program it from the transmitter. Radios now days have customizable curves for anything you want so why not ignition? Flip a switch or twist a knob to change the curve. Maybe that's a bad Idea. The "Custom advance curve" thread would reach 500 pages in about a month. The first 400 pages would explain over and over that you can't expect a custom ignition curve to fix poorly adjusted needles. The engine companies that use Rcexl would not use it since they would need double their support staff to handle all the inquiries on screwed up ignition curves. It could be an aftermarket item only. There would not be enough time to discuss oil mixes and fly too.

RE: Favorite resin for glassing?
Hey WYO, Where are you getting the MGS? I see Aircraft Spruce is charging and extra $75 ($25 hazardous + $45 box fee) to ship a quart of slow hardener for the 285. That's on top of the cost of the hardener. I prefer Spruce or Wicks rather than the hobby places. The usual hobby dealer shipped me a set of MGS with only a month to go before the expiration date. I never had a problem with it but I would prefer fresher stock. I have used the MGS 335 to save a few bucks over the 285. I like that you can combine the slow and fast hardeners to customize pot life and cure time to the task at hand. The slow with just a dash of the fast gives plenty of working time.

RE: OS-120AX cookbook
ORIGINAL: F-4 ....so maybe all have gone electric...... John
In pattern, mostly electric now. The AX works very well with tuned exhaust. The Jett tuned muffler gave about an extra 800 rpm over the stock muffler with an APC 16x8. The Jett has no adjustment so you have to stay within it's tuning range, around 9500+. Pretty loud exhaust. The carbon pipe boosted anywhere from 750 to 1000 depending on prop and nitro content. I did not try it but I would bet APC 15x10 or 16x10 would work well for pattern use with a pipe. Header length? If you have to ask..... It's best to learn how to tune it. This is another attraction of electric, it's just simpler. The pics show a Mueller header which is no longer available. Just Engines will custom make headers. Whatever exhaust works on the AX will also work on the DLE 20 with a flange change. The DLE probably outsells the AX by 10:1 these days. About the same power and weight. Pump carb is a plus over glow.

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Yours must be a top 1% engine. Ran mine yesterday and today. Got ~8050 with the Xoar 17x6 and stock muffler. Mine only has about 1/2 gallon through it so maybe more break in will improve it a little bit but I don't expect anywhere near 8800 with the stock muffler. My Globee optical tach is sensitive to lighting conditions. If everything is not just right then it reads high. I have the plug in RCXL ignition tach hooked up and just use the optical tach for double checking. Both Xoar 16x8 and 17x6 turn about the same static rpm on my 20.
ORIGINAL: mach2
ORIGINAL: raydar 8800 to 8900 is optomistic with a dle 20 on a xoar 17 6 , not saying not possible but I have a dle 20 and have had a couple of other 20cc motors and 8500 rpm seems to be impossible with perfect timing and peak tune. If I could run 8900 with a 17 6 xoar I would be fitting a 18 6,not likely.
Dunno, maybe I just have a strong runner.... I had to tear it down again because of a crash due to some type of signal loss to the Rx. This time I changed the crank and front and rear bearings. It seems tighter to turn over after I did the bearings so I may lose a few hunderd rpm this time around until it breaks in a bit. You think getting 9120 with a 16x6 is optomistic to? I know my little motor is a hell of a powerhouse. Thats why I went with the 17x6. Either way, shouldnt they be getting more than 7400 with a 16x8??? I think so....Its about 1,000 rpm less than what Id think they would get. Jeremy
RE: DLE 20 With an ES Composites Tuned Pipe

I have the ES Composites 26G pipe.
That should be fine. The 120AX pipe is just a shorter version of the 26G. The 26G is a bit too long to work with a wrap around header on 20cc. The coupler ends up right up against the last bend on the header. With a standard side exhaust header there is only one bend so the coupler has more room.
Well, I don't think the header that I was using is long enough to start with.
Well, that's easy to test. The difference from inlet to first baffle on the 120AX and 26G pipes is 2.5" so your header will have to be shorter than my AX pipe setup.
The stinger outlet diameter is a bit small on the ES Composites pipe I thought. The EVO has a 1/8'' larger diameter stinger outlet.
That's not the problem. Either pipe will work. The 26G was originally made for the guys running the MVVS/Evolution 26. It worked great for that and it's 6cc bigger than the DLE 20. Buying a different pipe may let you accidentally stumble onto a combination that works but that's not the right way to go about it. You need to follow a systematic procedure so that you can see the results approaching that point you want to be at. Even mousse can setups can give great results. Haphazard approaches can give some improvement but without following a systematic approach you would never know if you have the optimum setup.
To do testing, you must use a really short header so that you have room to change the length with the silicon tubing.
It beats guessing. I had the advantage of pulling a high rpm setup from a different 20cc engine so I knew I was already close and could add header length for lower rpm.
