RE: Greater Southwest 2012 Waco Texas
To Larry, Bob C. and all the other great members of HOTMAC......this event was a clear reminder of just what this hobby is all about. I consider it a distinct honor to have been invited to reunite with those I met at the very first one, 30 years ago! Renewing old acquaintances and making new friends was remarkable. Special thanks to Mike Kulczyk, Dawn Ellzey, Butch Sichels, Bill Kinney and others for making it happen. I can't believe just how many world problems we solved in our discussions! For those of you who haven't been and love jet modeling, put this one on next year's "Don't Miss" list. Thanks again, all! Rich U.

Hi Ron, I'll try to scan the original M.A.N. article and make it available to those that need it as a pdf. file. The canopy and other plastic part sourcing for the 81" version seem to be making progress. After any number of attempts at a variety of suppliers, I think I've found one that has the ability, interest and equipment to do them for me at a reasonable price. Should have samples within a week, fingers crossed. To all of you I've disappointed with delays, I apologize. Will keep you all posted. Rich

I have not discussed the molding with him but I will; perhaps it can at least get me out of the woods with the guys that need canopies right away. Thanks for the tip. Rich

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
Now I sit with a complete model probably worth $1500 with no canopy. Gaines is nice enough to work out a solution which has seemed to evade you for two years and you pull the rug out from under him. Either you intend to support your customer base or you don't. You can't keep telling us the check is in the mail. Jerry. I would suggest you read my earlier post. How is it that I "pulled the rug out from under him"? I would have thought my offer to send the aluminum mold to Fiberglass Specialties would have at least provided the small number of canopies you folks required, at least allowing me to continue my search for a source for all my other plastic parts molding requirements. After that, modelers could decide whether or not they wanted to buy them from me. I would further suggest one additional point; collect and understand all the facts before you speak to an issue and challenge someone's, anyone's, integrity. End of my input; have a happy thread. Rich

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
Gaines and the other folks, I just got off the phone with Craig at Fiberglass Specialties. We had a discussion, the net result of which he decided that he was not planning to get involved for a variety of reasons. I saw his points and I hope he saw mine; we differed on some issues with him concluding that it probably would not be worth doing. If you have specific questions regarding his position, I'm afraid only he can provide answers. I will, however, say that I offered to send him my aluminum mold for the 80" canopy which he declined. Sorry for all this unfortunate turn of events. Rich

I haven't contacted those two specifically but my guess is that if they respond at all they'll tell me that they require a large run order to make it worth their effort. All that I've contacted seem to fall into the "$3500 bricklayer" category...... Haven't given up yet though; just looking for some fresh ideas from fellow modelers!

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
Little help here, guys. The continued (and future) availability of plastic parts, including canopies, for my OV-10 is dependent purely on finding a supplier willing to produce the parts. I have production quality (read $$$) aluminum molds and they have spent more time traveling around the country than I have. Lots of companies are capable of providing the service but I'm afraid you guys would not be willing to pay the price they want in small quantities. If any of you know of companies willing to undertake the task, I'm all ears. I'm not talking about your fellow club member who just retired and has a shop vac that's not doing anything and is thinking about going into business. The level of quality I'd expect is the same that you would demand for the price you'd pay. I've been trying to secure a supplier for quite some time now and it hasn't yet been fruitful. Would love to hear from you. Rich

RE: What Color Grey?
If you intend to compete, just make certain your specific model matches your documentation. Remember though, photos and artwork (profiles) are usually the LEAST accurate sources of the actual colors. BUT, if an inaccurate color scheme depicted in a painting is the only thing you use in your documentation package, it's what the judges must use when scoring your entry. A written description with actual color chips, are the most reliable and least "challengeable". I personally feel that, in serious competition, the documentation packages submitted should be scored also. They frequently appear like rushed afterthoughts rather than having been collected before the model was even built.

RE: New Giant OV-10 Bronco
ORIGINAL: Ron101 I just wish I would get some sort of info from Rich. I've emailed him, pm'ed him, ask here and nothing at all... I've seen him logged on to this thread but won't say a word. I personally find it rude... don't understand what the secret would be it's simple..... maybe someday, never, soon, not sure....anything is better than nothing but what ever I've tried
Sorry you consider me rude, Ron, but the fact of the matter is that I would prefer to spend whatever "extra" time I have for the hobby designing, developing and building projects that have captured my interest. I rarely participate in forums as it tends to consume time I feel is better spent elsewhere in other pursuits. I am not one obsessed with the current trend of "social networking" as I prefer my friends and acquaintances to be those I can see, shake hands with, and spend quality time. Generally, I shy away from active involvement in the forums except to get a feel for what fellow modelers are doing. I have become increasingly disinterested in participation because, under the cloak of anonymity, many participants seem to continually bash people, products and companies based on their opinions, rarely on facts or repeated occurences. Equally rare is the offer of any credential or validation of experience level. I've seen "reports" where a product was severely bad-mouthed for having inadequate instructions when the basher's total exposure to R/C had been through a foamy, and one wood ARF; he then blamed the "poor" instructions for his inability to glue two sticks together and install the radio equipment. There is no "secret" to my silence; I, like most modelers, have many other interests and activities. I do not earn a living from this activity as I prefer it to remain what it is to me, an enjoyable, rewarding hobby. Want a simple answer? Someday; when I think it's ready. To all the other participants, my apologies for taking the space. Rich

I'm fairly certain it was Ultracoat or some derivative. My experience is that even with the same product from the same source, there can be significant variations in color from batch to batch. Rich

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
Sorry, guys, about the non-response to the e-mails and lack of participation here; I'll try to do better. Here's the scoop on the plastic parts for the 80" Bronco. As indicated on my web site (www.richuravitch.com), the supplier I had could no longer produce the parts and I have been on the quest for a new source. I have one set of molds out to a potential new supplier and am expecting the sample articles shortly. In any case, I do plan on continuing and do not intend to leave anyone who either has undertaken, or plans to undertake, the building of my Bronco, out in the cold. Since it isn't a full time thing with me, I sometimes get behind the power curve. Thanks for the patience and understanding. Rich

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
Hi guys, The spar material for the Bronco should be whatever makes you comfortable. The original model used hard balsa, subsequent versions, bass or spruce. More important than the type material, from a strength standpoint, is the is the importance of good wood to wood joints and strong adhesive. Think of the wing structure as a system with each element dependent on the next for integrity and overall durability. I have never had, or heard of, a wing failure of my Bronco design despite some highly aggressive power systems being used or very Chime done........... Rich

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
BadLemon, You're right about the 109" version being more scale than the previous two, smaller sizes. In fact, the 109" is a totally different airplane with scale airfoils on both the horizontal and vertical tail surfaces. The canopy was lofted in 3D CAD and the file used to MasterCam a mold from appropriate material. As I mentioned, molds were also made for the cowls, nose and rear caps from which fiberglass parts may be produced. All I really need to do now is to finalize the drawings. As far as flying similarities; the big one flies even better than the 80"! Both my electric and gas versions fly like "cruisers", very stable, predictable and with no quirks at all. As a matter of fact, I loaned my tan camo electric to Sean Curry and he really dazzled the spectators at Monster Planes; most found it hard to believe that it was electric powered. With the cost of electric motors, ESC's and batteries continuing to come down, large electric twins are becoming quite practical as R/C models. What was really cool though, was the sound......not quite turboprop but way quieter than gas. Rich
