ORIGINAL: microdon2 afjetmech - Just noticed in Technotes that the chicken stick is to start GLOW engines. Aren't chicken sticks pretty much used for gassers?? Another strange item - packaging a transmitter and four 3004 servos. Those servos are good for small planes and trainers, but not even close this plane. Last - the "combo savings" in this package of $1,085

Their "combo" package is pretty funny. It includes a chicken stick. Who the hell is going to flip a 50cc engine with a chicken stick?! On a serious note, WOW!!!! It has finally come to be, the big Revolver. Time to start the Christmas list!!!!

RE: Larger Revolver
ORIGINAL: wjcalhoun Guys: I got the 14x12 prop on the R70/DLE20 today. Made essentially no difference in the needles. Turning 8700 at WOT at sea level for a prop speed of about 95mph, which is the same RPM i had with the Xoar 17x6. The plane flew great. Engine spool up is definitely slower with the heavier APC prop, and thrust on taxi and takeoff is noticably less; with the 17x6 Xoar, a flip of the throttle made the plane jump forward. With the 14x12 APC, not so much. In the air, it shines! Low rate rolls are quick - probably 400-420*/sec - with the faster airframe speed. WOT low passes were quick; the plane really moved. The high pitch prop did not adversely affect her knife edges, flat spins (upright and inverted), or avalanches. I did note that she pulled more to the left on uplines but am not sure whether that is a p-factor effect accentutated by higher pitch, or just bad pilot technique on my part. Predictably, she does not pull on the uplines as strongly as with the 6 and 8 pitch props. There was almost no wind at the field today so I landed long twice, and even with a 1600rpm idle, she was carrying speed. She should settle at that rpm so i probably just need more stick time with this config. In short, i like the higher pitch props!
Did you fly it with a 15x10 yet?

RE: Larger Revolver
ORIGINAL: microdon2 ahicks - I'm wondering if you could program in a mix of throttle and elevator - as you go up throttle - past 1/2 throgttle (which is the trim point, as you mention), the elevator is programeed to trim down a percentage, which increases slightly as you go towards WOT. And the inverse for less than 1/2 throttle - the elevator would trim up a percentage. Anyone ever tried this? Anyone know if this would work?
The problem with that is when you hit full throttle at a lower speed, your plane then starts to descend until the speed is to the point where it levels out. So you are having "fly" the aircraft anyway. You'll either be doing it before or after it gets up to speed.
ORIGINAL: wjcalhoun For those of you with DLE20, give a 16x8 prop a try. Next time out for me, it will be a 15x10!
Looking forward to your 15x10 results. I had an Xoar 16x8 and liked the way it flew until a nose over broke it. Replaced it with an APC 16x8 and it does seem a little slower. I also am looking to get as much speed as possible out of mine. I also had a 15x8 on it for a while (not sure what brand) but I think the DLE20 was really over reving. This was the prop on it when my crankshaft pin broke also. Was kind of afraid to put another one on after that.

I would like to see a set in carbon fiber just for the heck of it except cf is pricey when it comes to landing gear. Running the stock gear just makes me stay smooth on my landings....teaches me discipline [;)] All joking aside, the Rev 70 makes an inexperienced RC pilot like me look good [:D]
You're not the only one. I'm on my second Rev 70 and my third set of gear with a spare set in waiting. Yeah, my landings could use some work, but I'm sticking with the stock gear because they just help make the plane look so cool.

I think I'll stick another 1/4oz weight on the rudder next time out and see how it flies. I have often thought it was still a little nose heavy. The extra weight might just help me stick those landings a little better too. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

RE: Larger Revolver
Your answers all sound good to me. Was just wondering if maybe there might be something wrong with the plane or how I might have it set up. Sounds like it probably is the dihedral doing it. Now that I think about it, my little Mini Extra 300 doesn't do it and it has straight wings. I have the Rev59 also but have never tried an outside loop with it yet.
ORIGINAL: microdon2 afjetmech - are you able to do normal outside loops without trouble? As you know this plane has some dihedral, so you do need to stay on top of outside loops.
Yes, it will do a normal loop fine. Just when an ouside loop from inverted or upright it will roll out. Didn't think about the dihedral factor. Maybe I just need to learn how to fly better.

RE: Larger Revolver
Here is a general question that I'm sure someone can answer. When flyiing my Rev 70 the other day I was cruising along inverted and then pushed forward to do a half ouside loop. The aircraft rolls out whenever I try it. It tracks fine through inside loops. It needs slight to moderate down elevator to stay level when inverted. Is this a C/G thing or maybe some sort of misaligned elevator problem? I would think the latter would affect inside looping as well.

Between the weather and buying a house, I haven't flown my Rev70 in over two months. Today I finally get to the field with multiple planes and heli's to enjoy an entire afternoon of beautiful 75 degree N.C. weather. Start to assemble the 70 and realize my wing tube is no where to be found. Not worth the drive home and back. Just thought I'd share a little frustration. Thankfully, everything else flew good, but I was soooo looking forward to hearing that DLE 20 screaming on some full throttle passes.
ORIGINAL: mach2 a few people have asked me why im building a plane ive already had. "why not get something different?" well I think the amount of guys on here who have purchased a second Rev 70 show just how much this plane is liked. Even though I killed mine after only about 7 flights, it flew so goo, I want another. Id rather buy another gorgeous plane that I know is a great flyer than get something else and not like it. Then Id be kickin myself. So how many guys are going to build a second (or third) Rev 70? 1 here...
I'm on my second. Like Microdon said, I totaled my first one in a low stall\crosswind situation. Had the new one ordered that evening. Love the plane with the DLE20. No complaints at my field yet about the noise. I hope not because I love the sound when it screams by low and fast at full throttle! If a 30 or 50 sized is ever made, I'll be one of the first to order one. And I'm primarily a heli guy.

Looks great! Can't wait to get back out to the field and fly mine. Between weather and moving into a new house, the flying has been pretty non existant. I love the growl these have with the DLE 20 as they fly by. Mine is probably the loudest plane at the field, but everyone compliments it. Now I just have to do it justice by flying better. Good luck with yours and watch those landings if you have not reinforced the gear.
ORIGINAL: mach2 cool. they must be a good plane if you got another one! ill check out your pics. what motor are you running? and what were the circumstances when your gear came off? and did you just have them mounted with no modification when it broke? Jeremy
I love the plane. The looks especially. Everyone at my field comments on how good looking it is. I'm running the DLE20. Great little engine and perfect for this airframe. Many others are using it too. It can be mounted with the stock plastic mount with some slight mods and requries some creative throttle throttle rod bending, but if its not a challenge, then its boring. I got lazy on my second Revolver and just tried using extra epoxy and a few strategically placed screws to reinforce the gear mount. Held for a while, but one hard bounce took the gear off. Usually it breaks out clean and is easily glued back in. (after some internal beefing of course)

RE: Larger Revolver
Yes I have a Rev 70. On my second one as a matter of fact. A bad cross wind destroyed my first. After ripping the gear off the second one I glued and screwed a block about an eighth of an inch above the gear mount. Screwed it solid from the firewall and former behind that. Then counter sunk screws through the gear mount and into the block inside. It is holding solid now. I put large washers (actually aluminum helicopter blade spacers) under the outside bolt heads to minimize the the gear leg twisting. I think if you search my profile you can find all my posts and any pictures I've posted. Don't have any of these current mods though.
ORIGINAL: mach2 oh, speaking of that, ive got a battery question. the guy "knockoffs" on youtube that im copying is using a 3200mah life pack for the receiver and a 2100 for the ignition. but today, a friend of mine who has a 70" extra 300 with the DLE20 is only running a 1100mah for both the ignition and the receiver and he said he has enough juice to easily do 3 flights and possibly a 4th if he wanted to push it.. so it seems that a single 3200 life would be more than enough to run both for me. what to you guys think? it would save me 35 bucks and some weight on the plane.... thanks again for ALL the help! RE: Larger Revolver
ORIGINAL: Slow and Steady Sorry, I don't remember the jumpers or making any adjustments. You can hook up a battery checker to the ignition line coming out of the IBEC to check its voltage before attaching to the ignition. I will be removing the cowl in the next couple of days and will check it out myself. I think the voltage on mine was around 5.6. I will post my findings. Todd, the owner of Syssa, is also very responsive to any email inquiries.
Well looking at the unit there are 4 pins, with two each labled A and B. The A pins are jumped and the B pins are not, with the jumper just stuck on one of them. This is giving 5.3volts output using a Life pack. I'm going to just leave it there. I assume different configurations change the voltage, just don't have any info on what does what. I hate just blindly screwing around with new electronics without proper instructions.
ORIGINAL: Slow and Steady The Syssa IBEC works with any kind of battery and has been very reliable for me. I think it is smaller than the one sold by Chief. The Chief one also requires you to move the dedicated switch twice to turn the engine off. I have the older Chief version on my Yak. It doesn't require the double throw and also works great.
Got my Syssa IBE but have a question. What are the jumpers for on the end? Do they control input and output voltages? It came with no instructions and there aren't any on the website.

RE: Larger Revolver
Well on this second Revolver I modified the firewall box a little and relocated one mount blind nut. (the one that interferes with the needles) This enabled me to get the engine back farther and centered in the cowl. Should only have about a 1/4" gap between spinner back plate and cowl. Much better than the almost half inch I had before. This has made hooking up the choke lever from the rear more difficult though, so this time I'm going to go with a manual choke setup out the cowl front and use an ignition battery eliminator for engine kill safety. So here is the question. I don't need anything mega fancy or expensive, so who makes a decent IBEC?

But, I really can't complain. It's because of a new relationship with the woman who moved into the apartment behind me.
