Ok I see the light now. Sorry. By the way do you have large kits? I have been looking for a EU1-A ( I think thats right) for a long time.

RE: Retracts For HOB's
on all of my HOB 1/2 kits I dont use the 1/32 ply for the fus at all just adds weight. these kits are over built in the fus. lighter flies better. also I forgot to add E flight has or had some small air retracts also. http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/90-deg-main-micro-pneumatic-retract-set-EFLGP0150 these are the same ones made by Sapac or the same ones Sapac carried. I have this set and a tri gear set for the bonaza. i have used these in a Sapac Viper jet. it was 4 lbs and held up well even in a off the paved runway into the grass landing.

RE: Retracts For HOB's
you will have to run Robart 1/2A retracts. One big problem is that you need a regular 180 Degree retract servo for this. that just takes up a bunch of space and heavy. adding retracts adds a bunch of weight on these planes. I have done them and will do again on some of the HOB planes others will just be hand launch. The latest set I have gone with is to use HS 65 HB servos one for each side and get a 180 mixing board from Servo city. This helps with the space issue but the weight is still there. One other option if you want to go to a air set up is to shop around on the electric ducted fan sites as they sell the super small air retract sets. the air tank can be mounted in the aft section of the fuselage. this is good if running a 10-15 size engine anyway. the e-flight retracts are just to deep as they are 1" thick which means you need a wing thats 1 1/8 inch thick.

RE: Looking for fast engine
ORIGINAL: NikolayTT I would try the engines used in the RC-cars, some reach up to 40,000 rpm just like that. Some fellows may say that those are small displacements, but that is on my opinion good if we consider the Diameter of the Propeller and the Linear speed of its tips. Even with 6 inch propeller 30,000 rpm gets the tip beyond the Ultra-Sound speed and to ... dangrous desruction. So I would ask the Question: - Yes, Fast Engine, but with what kind of Propeller ? - Well, mabe Impeller then but that is 'a bit' strange use of combustion engine, isn't it... Cheers, Nick (also OS fan, beside the Italian SuperTigre an Rossi of 'good old times')
None of what you said will be fast in an AIRPLANE..

I never owned one and when they came out i was going to buy two of them for a twin project i have. I read a lot on here how guys were disapointed in them. maybe MTK will let us know his thoughts. He tests many engines for his pattern flying. they are 3-4 threads in here on this engine.

RE: FP or LA
ORIGINAL: aspeed I would make the choice on where you want the needle valve sticking out, front or back. They are both siimilar. Maybe the LA could get parts easier, but they will likely stay on the plane and not wear out for a while. The carbs are very small to make them easy to tune and get good suction and give ok but not spectacular performance. Just what you want for a multi engine plane.
This is dead on for a multi engine plane of this size. For you guys that think the liners still peel on the newwer OS engines they are not like the older engines. Yes enya engines are great but not as available as the OS engines. The fox engines run well also. If it was me it is a no brainer LA 46 engines 15% fuel and 10x6 props

RE: FP or LA
ORIGINAL: Sport_Pilot
In my opinion there is nothing more reliable than on OS LA.
Oh come on! It has an air bleed carb! That means that any small amount of dirt getting into the oriface will change the mixture. Any twin needle carb will be more reliable, OS makes some fine carbs. However the same cannot be said about their ABC liners. The later LA liners are better than the older liners and likely the  FP. However for the most reliable I would go elsewhere, I have seen many air bleed carbs give trouble because of dirt in the orifice.
just because you couldnt get one to run doesnt mean everyone else cant. Air bleeds dont off the best transition but i think they are more reliable than two needle carbs. for the OP the LA 46 or GP 42 engines will do just fine. i have around 20-22 engines with air bleeds and they all run just fine. for a multiengine project like this LA engines are the way to go.

that crank driven turbo really needs to spin 80-100,000 to work good enough to make worth while. would be better if belt drive with cogs in it than a oring. the carb needs to be a pull thru set up also if it isnt. i dont thinks its worth the 250 dollars they are asking for it. just learn to drive better

RE: Valve overlap on 4 strokes
those LSA's applie to NA engines. add a form of mechanical super charging and you want very little overlap. You can build a "tuned" exhaust for the engines also. a mega phone style with a 7 degree taper a good starting point. thing is they are very very loud.

RE: Question About Custom Propellers
MTK some of the university's in this contest are entering differnt class's. some are limited by a STOCK OS 61 two stroke and stock muffler. this limts it to a 14-15" prop at best. we have the davis school here and i have helped them out some and so far the best thrust was achieved using a Bolly 13.5x6 prop. Some of these classes for this event will allow a gear drive units where this could be used with a larger prop but you will loose some power in a gear drive. TiptoTail i would look at using a Xoar props. look to use some of the ones below then tweak them for max thrust. I would thin the airfoil and sharpen the trailing edge and add a small tip winglet to get the most out of it. i wouldnt waste to much time on cutting your own prop and work on getting a good designed plane built early and work with your pilot to fly it well. this is where i have seen mistake made. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAPMA&P=0 13" x 5 pitch http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAPME&P=0 14" x 4 pitch if on the stock 61 rules if on the up to a 65 with a tuned exhust set up let me know and i can help there also

Valve lash to tight maybe. you can change the lash to slightly adjust when the lifter is starting to get on the "ramp" of the cam. i wouldnt worry about it as far as i know no one makes aftermarket cams. The OS 30 FS is the only engine that had two different cam profiles made for the engine.

RE: OS 120 AX Problem ?
ORIGINAL: Rocketman_
ORIGINAL: Merlin Man ... I now want to try to use a Pitts Style again and wonder if there are any that have had success with this set up ??
Yes, I am having success with two OS 1.20AX engines side mounted on a scale twin war bird using Slimline large volume Pitts style mufflers. The engines are being run with no pumps, no regulators, no check valves and no plugged exhaust pipes. They are very easy to start by hand (chicken stick). One of the engines quit during the second flight of the model while transitioning between high and mid throttle, which is a common complaint about this engine. I found that I was being too gentle with them during break in by running them too rich. I said ''enough of this rich crap'' and I leaned them out and they've run very well ever since. The pictures show the wedge shape of the muffler which allows it to fit entirely inside the cowls.
why did you buy extra mufflers when the 120 comes with a pits muffler?????

RE: OS 120 AX Problem ?
no because most of these mufflers at the time they were produced worked just fine. IE: lower power engines with smaller carbs. It is the same with these mufflers on most of the engine sizes. These mufflers are usually less power than the stock muffler so they made them have 2-3 exits to try to get some power back that the stock muffler has. doing this they lost some back pressure. Some of these also have the muffler pressure tap in the wrong spot. near the engine exhaust can have a positve and negative pressure pulse leading to the low tank pressure. You can take the muffler pressure and try a 3 dollar check valve to see if it helps.

RE: Air hole in cowling (pics)
ORIGINAL: Fleet 5 to 1 is the industry average ratio to area coming in vs. area going out. My $.02 Ray W.
wrong!!!! a few guys hit on it here. Take a little time and make a baffle that is glued to the front of the cowl and make the baffle where it is placed just inline with the cylinders. do this so that the baffle will goto the the cylinder and be in the middle of the cylinder (the direction the piston moves). Air is a fluid and think of it as water flowing through the cowl. look at your inlet holes and then look where your exit hole is. The air will enter the inlet and then go straight to the exit as best it can. this will only allow the air to touch the front lower section of the cylinders. by adding a baffle as i described it will force the air to flow through the fins on the front of the cylinder and most of the air to flow over the top and down the back side of the cylinder down to your exit. another thing about air is that it doesnt like being forced to do anthing but go in a straight line. think of how you can create a slight negative pressure at the exit. this will help pull the air where you need it. just by adding the baffles as i described you will increase your cooling of the engine by 100-200% over what you have now.

Yes the pitts mufflers do not supply enough pressure to feed the carb. three things to do if want to run the pitts muffler 1.Block off one exhaust tube or pinch both of them closed 1/2 way with pliers 2. run a 30 dollar perry pump 3. run a smaller carb all the AX engines not like to run hot. I am very well versed in the OS 120 AX engine. If you have any questions let me know. The 120 is the strongest one out there and it is also the lightest. It is even stronger than a Jett 120.

It still looks like you have injested something or something is coming apart. Look at the head with tiny nicks in the chamber area and then look at the case where the rod looks to be rubbing or the bits of metal are causing it to rub. also when your going to post pics of the inside of your engine can you clean out all the oil. This will allow us to see the engine better. thanks Take a picture of the top of the piston. it does look like you have been running it hard. some where on the piston skirt just below the pin and some blowby past the ring. I just saw that your in roseville lol close to me. I should be going to RC country next week maybe i could meet you there and look it over for you.

Sport i have some old engines also. I never use after run or even run my engines out. The one thing that has changed is the bearings are different than they were a long time ago. some engines injest more than others and some dont. To many variables to say how long bearing will last. If you look at the head in this post you will see tiny tick marks something has caused those. till he gives us a better picture or he comes on here we will never know. I would still replace the bearings and not because of the way they look.
