RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
Make sure your glowplug is glowing. Take it out and crank it a few times 2 clear out any fuel that may be in the combustion chamber. Make sure you turn the truck over If you glowplug is working fine make sure you are getting fuel. I like 2 prime it by taking the fuel line off the exhaust pipe and blow into it til you see fuel pass thru the line. As soon as you see the fuel reach the carb stop blowing. Put the line back on the pipe and try 2 start it again. If it is still not starting, Hold you finger over the exhaust stinger and crank it a couple times and let it go. By now you should hear it wanting 2 start. This works 4 me every time on any engine.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
Well I havent been on in about a week. Finally got moved into my new apartment so I have been really busy. Im not 2 happy with the new area as far as places 2 drive the jato. Most of the lots around here are a slick kinda surface and I cant get any traction. When I get on the gas the back end just slides all over the place. I'll have 2 adjust the slipper a bit. I did find one lot about 10-15 min drive with some nice sticky surface but its on a maid road in the city. I was almost at full speed and started 2 break and turned the wheel. I must have hit a bump cuz the thing took a nasty flip or 3 and ended up on its lid right in the middle of the main road. I ran as fast as I could b4 any cars came and I was able 2 get 2 it in time. Didnt mess anything up at least.. I did find out I have a pretty nice hobby shop but its 30 mins away. I'll have 2 stop by when I can 2 get some new engine bearings cuz the air leak is really starting 2 become an issue. It hasnt made tuning any harder but I did notice the bottom end isnt as powerful as it should be. when it gets going and hits the higher RPMs the ABmodded work really screams and come 2 life. With new bearings it'll be insane.
ORIGINAL: MonsterKawi314 Right on. Thanks. As I said before, my friend has the 3.3, bone stock, and it is a MANIAC. The wheelie bar acts like its almost not even there. I have absolutely NO PROBLEM going with the TRX 3.3 Thanks why I ask you guys. You all know better than me the rigors of trial and error. Thanks for the heads up. I had just heard from a guy at the hobby shop that the O.S. was supposed to be a big power gain. Hope for his sake he knows about the gearing and what not.
Yeah the os .21 puts out a lot of torque. a little 2 much for the jato tranny 2 take. It will work but sooner then later the tranny will go. The 18TZ is pretty perfect for power torque and rpm 2 get you 2 the high speeds and you'll blow you buddies 3.3 away with the right set up.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
ORIGINAL: MonsterKawi314 Hello All!, I am proud to say I have finally gotten myself a Jato! My friend has the 3.3 and it is a beast! I was recently on Craigslist and saw a kid in my area with a Jato 2.5 for $200. I called him and set off to go check it out. When I got there, there were a few things (minor) which needed repair, (servo tray, bulkhead, and a good cleaning to get all the dog hair off it). So I offered him $150 and left with a new project. Now, I know this is a 3.3 forum so before you begin thrashing on me, let me tell you, I am in the process of converting it to the mack daddy 3.3. I am here to ask you guys, as I rebuild this thing, what parts are best for me to begin with, besides the motor, which I will be getting hopefully soon (thinking about the O.S. .21). I know Integy makes some good parts. I also wanted to know if you guys could point me in the direction of some GREEN anodized parts for it. I don't want the typical red, blue, or chrome. I have already painted a couple of killer bodies for it. I'll post pictures soon to show you guys. Any and all help is VERY appreciated. Thanks, and hope to be speaking with you all soon. -Brian
I wouldnt put the .21 engine in it if i were you. Yeah its a power gain but if you ask quitnas1 he will tell you. I think he has already blew 2 trannys on his jato cuz the gears arnt made for the power. You could make it work by adjusting your slipper clutch but you will lose preformance cuz of the clutch slipping. So it just kinda defeats the cause of what you are trying 2 do. I hope that makes sense. The TRX 3.3 is actually a pretty good engine I think but if you want try going with OS18TZ with a 3 shoe clutch set up and get the engine modded. You will have no regets. This link below is a revo that weights more then the jato and you can see the power. It would be crazy in a jato. Just check it out. Hope it helps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw6WH5DN3tY&feature=channel_page
ORIGINAL: JattoMan3.3 Oh forgot to mention, It would run if I left in the glow starter, could this mean that I need to put in a new glow plug, bearing in mind this was a brand new heavy duty traxxas one.
Sounds like it could also be set way 2 rich. What happenes when its set way 2 rich is as soon as you give it gas it soaks the glow plug and it'll lose power and most times die. Most times when you lose power on take off its cuz your low speed is 2 rich.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
ORIGINAL: rcphanatik the throttle is fine when the car isn't running, but when it's running something else may be causing the problem. of course, i really cant c if the throttle is wrking right when the car is moving....it didn't act up like this with the stock radio, but with the stock radio i didn't get good enough reception (due to me acting stupid) to test the engine out with the new head on. could it be the new head (i got the new "hourglass" RB Inovations head made for the 3.3)? i guess i'll mess around with different combinations of radios and recievers until i can figure out the problem.
Yes it could deffinetly be the new head you put on. even tho it says made for the jato....Being that it is not the actual company that makes the head for the jato they could have the measurments off by a tiny bit and that will effect your engine in a big way. Also it may not be the head. when you changed your head 2 the RB head did you take the shims from the old head and put them on the new one? If not that will cause a problem and if you did use the shims then maybe they are also damaged from the high heat caused from the engine over heating and you could have an airlleak from the head. The shims adjust combustion......2 many shims and you have pre-detonation............Not enough shims and you have detonation. Both are not good. for starters if you have not already go back 2 factory setting on the carb and start from there.

Thats funny. That happens 2 me as well. My daughter is 1 year and a half old and when I lose small peices of my jato and go crazy looking 4 them I never find them 4 the most part. My wife will come up and ask "is this for you toy car" ( lol she hates that thing) My daughter will find it and be playing with it and we always catch her with something.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
Oh trust me bro I know all about that. My 1st RC was a speedy tiger that cost about 150-200 bucks. I thought I was getting a steal after lookin on other sites. Then again that was way b4 I knew anything about RC cars and how true the "you get what you pay for" saying is. I ran into problem after problem with that thing and finding parts is like finding a cure for cancer and then if you do its being shipped from Tiwan and takes WEEKS. I came back from Iraq and got the jato and realized what RC really is and that speedy tiger went right in the dumpster. But now after the Jato I want something bigger that I can take off road cuz the jato doesnt do all that well off road unless you mod it and by the time i spend more money on mods for it I can just have bought the truck I want so.........

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
Well Im not sure where you can find that exact body but if you search online you can more then likely find it. Look into the crowd pleazer body. They are pretty tight and look good with your option of how you wanna place decals. You can also get some nice looking wing 2 go on it and it'll look real nice. I seen a few REAL nice custom jobs some guys have done and its like no other. I think that is best. 2 have something like no other out there and have your own style. But if you really want that blue/yellow body just google search jato 3.3 bodies and see what you can find. But anyway quitnas1 this is for you...............I took my tranny apart today after about 2 hours trying 2 remove a stripped screw I had. Finally went 2 auto zone and bought a screw extractor kit and in about 10 seconds I had it out wish I would have done that in the 1st place. But anyway......After taking it apart trying 2 figure out why it wouldnt shift into 2nd I realized it was what you said it may be. That little silver thing you talked about in the pic you posted...Well sure enought hat thing had snapped off so the clutch had nothing 2 grab and engage. The thing that sucks is that I just spent 35$ on a new diff and clutch and it turned out 2 be fine. So I just had 2 ordered a new clutch gear. I hope it gets here in time. I am moving in a week so I'll be F*C#ED if not. Gotta love RC man. Thanks for the onfo tho. After going thru all this with the tranny I could prolly take it apart with my eyes closed.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
ORIGINAL: slednut87 Ok well i am finally geting my jato tuned into where i like it. I started to play with the shifting but i can\t get it to shift into second. how many turns will it take, i went from the stock 24t to a 18t clutch bell. i turned the screw out anout a turn and a quarter and still no second.
Well as I learned the hard way..There is no factory setting for the shift point. Every truck is different. U just gotta play with it a little bit. Try 2 make ur slipper clutch a bit more tight. About 1/4 turn from all the way tight. Ur tune will also impact ur truck from shifting. A bad tune and the truck will not shift. Being that u changed ur clutch bell will also have an affect on ur shift point. The tuning window for the shift poind is really narrow and you gotta be carefull when tuning it. U wanna make small adjustments at a time and see how it will react. If you go pass that small window and it a hard time finding the right tune again. It sounds like u may have done that. If so have fun trying 2 find it again. What you can do is screw it in all the way. but be carefull not 2 much or you can damage the spring in the clutch. You should be able 2 feel when its bottomed out. From there make small adjustments and make high speed passes in between adjustments 2 take notice of it shifting. Continue doing this til u hear it shift. When you finally do.Continue 2 adjust til you are happy with the shift point. Try not 2 allow it 2 shift late and high in the RPM range cuz u will damage ur tranny. You can also check this out. http://www.traxxas.com/support/kb_search.php?action=artikel&cat=203&id=162

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
Well i just ordered a new diff and clutch. I put the TRX back on today and started tuning. The weather outside was perfect and I had such a good tune. The low end power was so snappy and it just took off. I was getting wheelies and good response. I had the radar gun out and was getting 45mph but it wouldnt shift into 2nd so damn thats all I could get outta it but not bad for 1st gear. Now I know 4 sure its not my tuning holding it back from shifting into 2nd gear. Its just my tranny is just about 2 go. I also did something crazy 2 while driving around. I have the jaco foams in the rear and I was just tearing up a little and all of a sudden the car just stopped and I could rev the hell outta it but it didnt go anywhere. I thought I blew my tranny. After getting it back inside I realized I some how stripped the inside of the wheel so one side was just spinnig freely. Im not sure if youn know what im talking about but you know the small black hexogon shaped thing that the wheel goes over 2 spin the wheel? Well that thing kinda stripped but I can still use it. The inside of the wheel however stripped so that was why the car wouldnt drive

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
ORIGINAL: quietnas1 Well the first time my tranny went out it would not shift into second either. The second time it stayed stuck in second. If you notice one of my pics you will see this little silver screw like thing. Both times that flew out and kept it from shifting. The first time it went out I didnt notice it was gone until I took the whole tranny apart. I dont know man. You might want to check the silver disk also that helps it shift. At a certain RPM it has a small peice of metal that stickd out and grabs the second gear. Check that as well and make sure it is working.
Ok I think I see the silver thing you are talking about in your pic. I had my tranny apart 2 day and didnt see anything like that. Then again I wasnt really looking. Where exactly does that thing go? when you say silver disc...When I had the tranny apart 2 day I was looking at the disc (the one with the shift adjustment screw on it) By looking at it it looked 2 be fine 2 me but then again Im not sure how it should look but it looks fine. But where does that silver screw go that u are talking about? I will prolly just buy a new tranny cuz my diff gear isnt looking all that great and its just a matter of time b4 its gone im sure. Now I gotta look at the prices.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
Damn bro that sucks. well I guess I am not the only having problems. I was out with the jato today and I just could not get it 2 shift into 2nd gear. I was making high speed run after run giving it a chance and nothing. I have tryed everything. I know its not the tune cuz I have put the engine back 2 factory settings 2-3 times and re-tuned and the tune is good with good preformance, good sound, smoke trail and great temps. I just dont know. I made sure my slipper clutch was tight. I even took the tranny apart 2 see if anything was visably wrong. I did see a few shrapnel peices on the gears that had worn a little but nothing 2 serious yet. I have never messed with the factory settings on the tranny so I dont understand why all of a sudden it wont shift. I have done it all man. I just dont know. I was looking on another thread and a guy on there said 2 turn the shift screw all the way till it stops and then back it out 2 1/2 turns. I started doing that and realized I had never messed with the screw b4 and I had already went pass 2 1/2 turns so that could not be right and this guy does not know what he is talking about. By then I did not know how many turns I had made. I searched everywhere online and come 2 find out there is no factory settings 4 the shift point and its all done my computer and each truck is different. I did however find the the 4tec is 7 1/2 turns out and being that is the closest info I could find I went with that but still nothing. The engine is getting plenty into RPM range 2 shift it just wont do it. I just cant figure out what it could be. If you guys have anything let me know man. Thanks.
ORIGINAL: devo208 ajk- you are very right i spent alot of money on motors my most expensive motor was a novarossi .21 ricky brake street drag modded for my mugen mrx4 i spent $ close to $700.00 and i dont take it out much and when i do take it out all the fellows i run with and/or against wont f- with it i cant get a race they r scard of it we clocked it at 84mph just a month ago. And thats not the only expensive high end motor i got my o.s.12tz spec 2 thats in my jato and it has a few wins under it belt and along with the gearing its fast crazy top end but i could have made out better with a cheaper motor. Like the .18tz but most of my buddies have that in there jato's. the only jato i raced had the 3.3 in it and i didnt beat him by much. I'm thinking of getting the 21tm and take out the .12 tz and put the .12 tz in my 4 tec.
Yeah I forget exactly where I seen the thread but there was a guy that put the 12TZ in his 4tec and had great results with sick speed. The 12Tz is actually made for on road touring cars much like the 4tec so that thing will prolly be pretty sick. As far as putting the 21 in you jato......You casn run into tranny problems just like quietnas was saying he has. Its just a lot of TQ and the gears cant really handle it. You can change your gearing and adjust you slipper clutch but that is just gonna get you back 2 where u started with the previous engine and balance out the power and tq and you will kinda lose some of it in a way. If you wanna beat you buddies in the parkinglot I would just go with the 18Tz and like I was all the time but its a tryed and true method..........Just get it modded and not even tell ur buddies til u win a bunch of races LOL I know its shady but hey if you have ever street raced that is how it is on the streets of street racing. People just never know what u have under the hood u just gotta let them assume. but hey is that novarossi .21 4 sale? LOL
ORIGINAL: quietnas1 The .18 TZ is a sick motor. But you dont need a whole motor mount kit. My LHS sells an adapter that mounts to the motor mount. I will try to find out who makes it.
Well I was talking about needing a motor mount fot the 21tm. The 18TZ I believe has around the same RPM as the 21TM cost less and if you were 2 get it modded it would then have higher RPM, more TQ more HP and lots more speed and preform all around a lot better then the stock 21TM and you would still have money left over. Now if you were 2 get the 21TM modded then it would be a great preformance increase but the only thing you would have 2 worry about is your tranny. And about the 21tm and the EZ-start. I think its all personal opinion and what the person wants. I am not a big fan of the EZ-start. It has way 2 much weight so if its speed u are after then its actually gonna slow u down. Now you will need a starter box for the 18TZ or you caould get the pullstart version but I think it cost more and bump start is better anyway. But hey if price isnt an issue 4 you and you could some how figure a way not 2 blow ur tranny then go with something like this engine. good luck with that 1 tho. Im sure you will be untouchable with other jato guys. http://www.jpracing.com/en/products/fx-engines/Eagle_21_R-9s.php This messsage wasnt ment 4 you quietnas but the other guy that was asking
