RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
The battery should not get that hot, if it could burn you. IF so, you are over propped, but a trip to the LHS will fix that. :)

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Looks great! Are you going to spray paint it or anything? How does it balance? What kind of prop is on that?

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Just a quick note, but the Cubs I have both came with 7" props, but they were very flimsy. The APC 7x4 was much better even though it was the same size :)
ORIGINAL: GreenAce92 Ok that clears it all up. I guess i will stay with the 6x3 is that what is pretty much closest to the stock prop? Becuase if the 6x3 prop is closest then that will settle it. I dont want the engine or battery to get too hot. And about the wing loading i will just make a bigger plane so that the wing is bigger. THanks for telling me about the heat of the battery.
Let us know, I've look at that cam before, but had forgotten all about it. I bet there is some setting you can adjust to not make it so green. Either way, if you can adjust it afterwards I guess it really isn't that big of a deal.

Ahhh back from vacation :) Enric, vega is right, you should just turn off the auto focus. Anything past 15 feet or so is usually at infinity focus anyway.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
My father got one stuck at about 60 feet up one day. I am a ham radio guy, and have put up a lot of antennas with the sling shot/pull up rope/ then pull up antenna trick. So I did that, after a hour or so of shooting lines up, I got one right over the branch the plane was on, pulled up some stronger line then procceded to yank on the tree for almost thirty minutes before the plane fell out. It was really stuck into it bad, only a little bit of damage, and that was due to the long fall to the ground after it finally popped out.

Good luck Vega, I hope you have some nice long flights from it :) Get it up really high and just let it glide down, thats always fun! Yea, the 12t is a screamer, honestly I don't think it would be a good motor for the cub.. the wings may come off ;)

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Hoping to get some flights in this afternoon with my brushless cub :) What type of motor are you needing to mount a prop on? Most of the threaded ones are 3mm, most hobby shops and places that sell nuts and bolts will have 3mm nuts and nuts with nylon lock washers to mount a prop. YOu can also order prop savers or just get them at your local shop I am sure. Great Planes seems to have odds and bits in all the shops around here, and they offer a prop saver. E-Flite does as well.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Ok you lost me, or maybe I lost you ;) The motor sits in a plastic tray that is screwed to the plastic motor wall or whatever it can be called. Put washers as spacers to cant it in any direction you need to do. You can put them between the mount and the wall. I am not home to look at mine, but I am sure something along these lines would work.
ORIGINAL: enricong I thought about that but I think the cowling wouldnt fit on since that goes against the motor wall
RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
You can try using a washer or two between the mount and the motor firewall to cant it back to the right. Putting washers on both top screws would cant it down if you needed too.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
ORIGINAL: vega2614 So, the motor should be pointed to the right when looking from behind the plane? Also, you also want a slight downwards angle, right?
Yes sir!

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
The prop looks to be on correctly to me, but you definitely need to have the motor canted to the right, not the left. It has to go to the right a few degrees to cancel out the torque that makes the plane want roll to the left.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Hi Vega, I am glad you finally found your problem. I was thinking about it on and off today, trying to think of a reason you are having such a odd problem. Goes to show you the simplest things screw us up! I have done the backward prop thing once, and even worse, reversed a servo on some alierons and chucked a plane into the air without checking the control surfaces. That plane is no longer with us ;) Anyway, I hope you get that back in the air soon, I can't wait for a flight report!

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
The Harbor Freight Cub is the Shun Da cub. The cub can do any type of aerobatics a rudder and elevator plane can do. You just can't roll.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Vega, that is terrible :( Sorry to hear about your troubles, I know it can be dissapointing to order something like that, and to wait for it, only to have it arrive not working. I've been using the 2410-09 I think it is on several of my planes, and on a 8x6 prop it does great. I also have a couple of the 2409-12t motors and they absolutely scream on a 8x4 or 7x5 APC prop. I use one on my Stryker, it's a blast. Here is a youtube video of someone with same motor... http://youtube.com/watch?v=ViukrjpP__8 The one I have on it now is one of the CDRom bell type motors, but I noticed UH started carrying this one here https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4899 awhile back so I got one in to try out. I get more thrust off of the APC props. The only other slow fly props I have seen that do not have a lot of flex in them are the Eflite props that come two to a pack. However, they are very limited in there selection. I hope you get things sorted out. The magnets in the brushless motors do vary. The 2410 and hacker clone motors I have spin much more freely by hand than the 2409 12ts. I know you are using the 2s packs because you are using them in the Lama as well, but maybe you can try some 3s packs as well? Just a thought, it would give you a whole new power range to play with on whatever motor you decide to bolt in.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Try switching around the wires, the colors usually mean nothing, a lot of motors and controllers only have black wires on the motor side. It is possible to have it push, pull, or not work at all. The ESC should make beeping sounds to confirm that you are hooked up and to go into programing mode or to let you know you are using lipo or nimh batterys.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Arg, I just remembered the shun da TX does not have a trim pot on the throttle channel. Battery fully charged? I have several of the same EScs now, they all beep for times when plugged in, but I can blip the thottle any time during the start up process to get going. Tried reversing some leads on the motor?

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Try using full throttle, with the trim all the way up. Sometimes the futaba like TXs have trouble with some BL escs.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
You should consider a Corona receiver, they work great, and are compatible with both positive and negative shift TXs. They usually can be had for under 20 bucks with a Crystal. UH sells them but they are always back ordered. www.bidproduct.com sells them as well, and you can find them at a few US venders. I use them and Berq receivers only, and I really can not tell the difference. If I were to spend 40 bucks on a receiver, it would only be a Berg though, nothing out there is better. It maybe what you are looking at already. If not, consider it, and also consider the Corona, they are excellent as well, I can spec out my planes with either and I have no trouble. I have a F27 Stryker with a Corona receiver, I fly it straight up till I can hardly see it then glide it back down, never have had one glitch at ranges that I can only guess at. Replacing the electronics with a BL motor, lipo battery, speed controller and new receiver puts you in a entirely new ballpark on the cub. I only flew one of mine a couple of times on the stock motor and speed controller, it is junk, and if I had to buy it all again, I wouldn't even pay 50 bucks for a new in the box model with everything. It is a horrible plane for a beginner. I think I paid around 120 for two planes shipped from a friend of mine. I wish I had put that money towards something that works out of the box like the HobbyZone Super Cub does. My father has one and it flys right out of his hand and goes for 15 minutes on a 1000mah nimh pack. I bought a Parkzone Spitfire for something to keep in my truck to fly when I can, I don't think I could ever go back to flying something that is direct drive with a speed 380 motor after seeing how well the Spit does on a geared 480. It just needs a light toss, and its off, goes fast at full throttle, and floats like a bird when glided. The roll rate is pretty low, so I think anyone that has had a plane up in the air for a few months can fly it. The GWS planes I have put together also fly much easier than the cub. My last venture to the hobby store got me a GWS 262 twin ducted fan model, that one scares me a bit, but I havn't even put it together. I reckon my point is... if you can fly a stock cub, you can probably fly the space shuttle ;) Don't make it so hard messing with the speed 380 motor, just put a cheap brushless in it and be amazed at the power and flight times you get. Just decide if you want to go fast with a small prop, or slow with a lot of torque with a bigger prop, and buy a motor and battery that matches the prop. UH makes it easy with the combo BL kits I linked.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Recently I have been buying everything from United. The LIPOs are excellent, you can't go wrong with them. I have 6 of the 2200 3s packs, and a few 1000mah and 1700 mah packs, they are usually barely warm to the touch after flights. They are getting slower at shipping out, due to growing popularity. It may take them over a week to ship your order, but you will get it. Just make sure not to order anything that is back ordered, otherwise you could be in for the duration. I have placed ten orders since christmas, and have received them all, including orders for back ordered product. The higher capacity lipos seem to almost always be back ordered, but they do get them in and ship your order when the factory ships them a batch.

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
Outside loops on a plane like this are going to be hard no matter what due to the fact that the wing has so much lift. A plane with a symmetrical or at least a semi symmetrical wing would be much easier :)

RE: Shun Da Piper Cub J3
So you are in Southport? I bet you have to deal with a lot of wind :) The 400xt and 2cell pack can swing a bigger prop than what you have now. I you upgraded to a 3 cell pack, I would think the 8x4 prop would be perfect. I have been buying all my Lipos from United Hobbies. Unfortunately, they are out of most of them now, but should be back in stock soon. The Hextronics packs they carry are excellent packs. I would go with a 3cell 1300mah they carry. It has a 20c constant discharge and a 30c+ burst. The balance plugs are the same plugs the dualsky, aligne and Parkzone lipos use. I put in two 9gram servos in one of my cubs and it really helped the CG a lot. Maybe if you went with a 1700mah pack it would help the CG even more, but I would think it would be pushing it. The hextronic packs are not as light as some of the more expensive brands out there. https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/comersus_listCategoriesAndProducts.asp?idCategory=86&curPage=2 I also got my servos from the same place, HXT900s, 9grams, 3.95 each I think. I have them in all my planes, and even in my Parkzone Spitfire RTF due to the fact that one of the servos in it striped it's gears. I can't wait to fly my cub again, I have been putting it off due to 15mph winds on a daily basis here. The field I fly at usually has higher winds than the actual forecast, so I have been flying the Parkzone Spitfire, GWS ME109, and a Parkzone Stryker that I built from replacement parts.
