RE: How to slow down plane while landing?
ORIGINAL: invertmast There is no reason you can't get that model into a 100meter long strip even with tree's on either end. The problem is your technique. Your going to have to fly it different than that carbon Z yak. Take the model up high, and practice flying it around with about 1/4 stick deflection of up elevator and with just enough power to maintain altitude. When done correctly you should be maintaining altitude without speeding up or slowing down. Do this with varying degree's of stick deflection and power settings until you know what stick deflection and power setting gets you the slowest possible flying speed without a stall. Now that you know that position you want to use a slightly higher power setting and slightly lower up elevator stick deflection setting. Now start practicing approaches using the above known settings. When done correctly you should be able to hold a bit of elevator and adjust your throttle position to increase or decrease your descent rate, which will also help adjust the touchdown aiming point on the runway.
Thank you. Yes, this is what I see other experienced pilots do. I was trying to do it with Carbon-Z as a practice, but so far I didn't get a sense of this balance of up elevator and just right power to be close to the hovering mode, but still moving ahead with much reduced speed. I need a bit more practice. Thank you everyone for helpfull inputs you provided for me. I am going to try all the tips you have mentioned and will see, which one is working the best for me. Thanks again! I appreciate you help. Andrei K.

RE: How to slow down plane while landing?
ORIGINAL: dbacque AK, you didn't mention what engine/prop combination you are using. This airplane set up per the plans should slow down very nicely. If you've changed anything from the plans the above ideas are good things for you to check. But most of the time when people can't slow a plane down the problem is technique. What is your flying history? As Steve asked, is this a move up to a more advanced airplane? You have to remember, your Katana isn't going to be as draggy as a trainer or a stick so it's not going to slow down as quickly. And flaperons definitely isn't the answer. We've all played with them at one time or another and most all abandon them as not a good thing. As you have discovered they make the plane non-responsive right when you need the response the most. And if you do use them, 25 degrees is way too much. The usual answer to this problem is to slow down your plane sooner and start your descent sooner. A light, slick airframe has a much shallower approach angle than a draggy airplane. If you try to come in too high, when you force it in you will gain airspeed that you can't bleed off until you're past the runway. When I prepare to land I chop my throttle back to just about 3 clicks above idle on the downwind leg about directly in front of me. That's right, still have half a circuit to fly and I'm almost at an idle. Let the plane descend during the downwind leg. Do be careful of your turns as you're flying slower now make gentle turns and watch for stalls. Keep the nose down in the turns and you'll be bleeding off altitude. When you come out of your final turn you should be much lower than the approach you make with a stick or a trainer. If you're too low, add a little throttle to stretch the approach. As you approach the runway continue descending and cut throttle even more. That plane should be able to slow very nicely but it will require throttle and altitude management. The last thing is to practice. Get out to the field when it's not crowded and practice touch and goes. One after another. Entire flights of touch and goes. Don't be afraid to put the power back on and go around if you're coming in hot. If you do enough touch and goes you'll find the technique that works for you and your plane. Dave
Hi, My Hangar9 Katana 50 is set as electric plane with AXI 4120/14 and Tunder Power 5S 5000maH (661gr). Due to CG disbalance I have added 170gr to the motor mount. Ready to fly weight is 3550gr. Yes, it is step up from E-Flight Carbon-Z Yak-54, which I am flying for entire season. 16 batteries per weekend with 7-9min each flight. Most 3D is mastered well and I start feeling that Yak is a bit slow in the air compare with the other balsa build electric planes. The reasons for step up: 1) Would like to fly faster and do 3D at higher speed; 2) Would like to fly larger and heavier plane. You know. it feels differently in the air :-). The problem for me: Faster in general this plane is approaching relatively short landing strip with higher speed and it is bothering me and stress me every time during the landing. With Carbon-Z Yak-54 I can land on 10m strip time after time w/o problem. For 50" size Katana over 100m strip is not long enough :-) I am thinking to slow down plane before landing by turning it 360 degree around to slow down and flare on the last 90 degree of the turn and only then take direction toward the landing strip . . . Our field is surrounded by moderate size trees on approach directions, thus I have to dive down at the beginning of the landing strip and this increase the speed when plane is already close to the ground (2-3m altitude). At this altitude I am afraid to flare as I may stall the plane w/o the chance to gain the speed again at 1.5-2 m altitude. As a result of increased speed after diving down to ~3m altitude and no action to slow down plane while the final 1.5m -0m slope my plane is always hitting the end of the strip with bushes (not what I like to see :-) ). I am also planning to remove 170gr weight from the nose and put rudder servo to the centre of the plane with push/tow setting instead of tail located servo with regular pushrod. This should help with CG and 170gr weight may not needed anymore. Thank you for all your inputs and more advises are welcome

How to slow down plane while landing?
Please, advise on how to slow down aerobatic plane (w/o flaps) like Hangar9 Katana-50 while approaching landing? I have aelerons set as flapperons, but on all landing approaches the plane is coming to almost crush situation while practically stalling at ~2m altiture. It is hard for me to compensate for sudden nose up while both aelerons down ~ 25 degree and still opperational as aelerons. I am looking for more simple way to slow down plane on approaching for landing. Please, share your thoughts. Thank you, AK.

RE: Trex 450 with 220g video camcorder
ORIGINAL: campcrafter what difference do you find in the 500. if i were to buy one would 500 be better considering i will use it for AP
Yes, definately 500 is much better choise for AP; As example I have flown 450 with 220gr camera up to 10 meters maximum. This 220gr is quite a load for 450 and I was really afraid to fligh higher than 10 meters up. Stability, orientation, visibility - issues. With 500 and the same camera I am flying over 60 meters with no problem, except it become very small in the sky when over 60 meters high. 220gr for 500 is almost nothing...may be even good to have extra weight for stability. Soon I will try 450gr HD camera on my 500 as I feel that 500 can carry as twice as its carrying now. 500 more stable in the wind any way and if you want to fly more time and wait for weather less time the bigger is better. If you will go with 500 then get ESP with torgue tube. On my 450 I lost belt well up in the sky and I would tell you it is bad experience. Torgue tube has one disadvantage - gears easy to brake at wild landing event, but I put foamy ball on the tip of the tail fin and I do not have problem since then. 500 is a good compromise between cost and your heli enjoiment. I wish to go 600 some day, but it is too expensive to crush. So far I stick with 2 Trex-500 (One as AP and onother one as back up or free of AP flying style). If you can afford 500 then go for it. You will not regret your choise, although if you a new to this hobby, then 450 may be better choise as crushes are unavoidable in this bussiness. Replacement cost for 450 is lower than for 500. I have flown 450 for a year before switching to 500. With such transaction (from small to big) 500 control seems to easy compare to 450. Once again you selection should be influenced by you flying skills as well.

TREX-500 with 500mm-550mm BLADES
Hi, I am using my TREX-500 mostly in hovering mode for aerial photography and I am wondering if anybody has an experience running 500mm, 515mm or 550mm blades on TREX-500 ? In a hovering mode with 430mm blades I measured power consumption as 265W (Flying weight is 1965gr) with standard setup. It is sucking only 12.3A at 24,V setup (6S 2600mAh Tunder Power v2). Look like standard setup may run 500mm blades pretty well. Anyone experience wellcome for share. Thank you, Andrew K.

HELICOMMAND 3A. Tail wagging issue.
I am looking for advice regarding tail wagging with HELICOMMAND 3A. I set up HELICOMMAND 3A on my Trex 450 SE v2 and started flying with some success, BUT... I have noticed that after taking off and hovering about 3-5 seconds the tail starts wagging. It is consistent in all my trials, but I found some way to kill wagging, by adding trottle a bit and then setting it back. Unfortunately as soon as heli coming to hovering mode in a 3-5 seconds tail wagging is happening again and it is persistent. I have reduced this wagging by reducing gyro gain, but look like I can't illuminate it at all. Please, help if somebody know or experienced with similar issue. Thank you, Andrei K.

HELICOMMAND 3A => Setup problems for TRex450
Hi, I am flying TRex450SE v2 for about 10 months and recently decided to instal HELICOMMAND 3A. I am practicing hovering with video camera on board and would like to get more stable conditions for video shooting. My recent video here: http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/HeliSept1st2008-wmv I have installed HELICOMMAND 3A, but I am struggling to set it right (swash-plate movement). As I mentioned I have TRex450 with Futaba 7C (2.4GHz) transmitter. What I did: 1) Set my Futaba 7C in H1 mode (each servo is acting from it's own stick as recommended according to HELICOMMAND manual); 2) I connected HELICOMMAND 3A according to manual; My problem: 1) When I am checking swashplate movement I am not getting right bechaviour. 2) I re-connected servos in all possible ways and tried out inverting them in all possible combinations. 3) If I am looking at helicopter from the front , then swashplate bechaive as: - Left servo as back one; - Back servo as right one; - Right servo as left one; 4) It looks like swashplate turned around 120 degree cntr-clockwise. 5) Any attempts to invert servos or re-arrang connections didn't help so far. I'D LIKE SOMEONE WITH HELICOMMAND SETUP EXPERIENCE (for TRex type of heli) TO GIVE ME AN ADVICE REGARDING HELICOMMAND 3A SETUP on TRex450. I am looking forward to receive some help. When LEARING 3D => heli fly almost "out of control" :-) I dropped 3D lessons after over $400 investment in repair :-) :-) Scale hovering is my way. TRex 500 => I / V / W / Weight => reference
Just want to share reference parameters I obtained for TRex-500. Settings: Motor: Align 500L (origional); Battery: Tunder Power eXtreme v2 (6S / 2600 mAh / 25C / 425 gram); Flying Weight: 1995 gram; Hovering mode: ========== Current=11.6A; Voltage under load= ~22.35V (after 2 minutes); Power consumption= 262W; You will be surprise to know that my TRex 450 SE v2 is consuming 11.4A in a hovering mode (power consumption ~ 125W); TRex 450 video clip with PANASONIC video camera: http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/HeliSept1st2008-wmv As we see additional power for TRex 500 is coming from doubled voltage (6S instead of 3S). I was able to hover my TRex 500 for 10.5 minutes in close proximity from the ground. Quite impressive setup for just hovering mode. Of course Tunder Pover eXtreme v2 (6S 2600 mAh 25C) have more juice than is stated for 3D flights. I feel it is arround 3000 mAh for 20C scale or probably 3300 for 15C scale. RE: Experience with "FlyCamOne2" Micro Video Camera
Once you opened camera there are 2 wires coming from the battery to the board (red one => +) and (black one => -). You have to un-solder them (ONLY ONE AT THE TIME TO PREVENT BATTERY SHORTAGE). Remove Li-Po battery and then solder two wires to the board (TIP: use servo wires with connector). Lead wires out through the hole (TIP: You have to make hole before soldering and lead new wires through the whole before soldering). Onece you close camera back you will have 2 wires coming out of the hole. TIP: put 1-2 drops of silicon culk on the hole to prevent wires from damaging. Once you have this setup you can use any Li-Po battery from ANY of your OLD CELL PHONE (as example). They all have 3.6V per single cell (there is only 1 cell any way). Solder another 2 wires to your Li-Po battery (from cell phone). TIP: Use servo adapter wire with opposite connector (Red color => + and black => -). TIP: When you soldering wires to the battery MAKE SURE it can be inserted in your cell phone (w/o cover). WHY ? You will need to charge your battery in your old cell phone. Once it is done remove Li-Po battery from cell phone and connect your servo connector to the wires coming out of camera with servo connector as well => SIMPLE as 1,2,3... I am using Li-Po Battery from my old NOKIA-232. It is about 6 months as I charge it and it is still working in my camera (about 1000mAh capacity). Origional Li-Po battery discard as useless equipment (very weak one). I hope my comments will help you. NOTE: I have sealed camera with silicon and this is the reason I can't show you camera guts :-). Good luck! Be honest I have moved to another camera with decent quality. RE: Experience with "FlyCamOne2" Micro Video Camera
I am using 2GB Transcend and 2GB Panasonic. These SD cards are working w/o any problem with my the very first version of FlyCamOne2 (newer upgraded firmware). It is possible that you have a problem with very weak LiPo battery inside the camera.
