RE: Saito FG-20
G'day Drcy, Sounds like you may need the new carby, apparently the hole in the throttle rotor was too small, the new carby fixed this. Also you must be sure that the hole in the back of the Pump/carby is free to breath, not just the air inlet, so you may need a bit more air flow around the carby. Cheers

RE: Saito FG-20
G'day Mate I have a simple question, If, when you held the plane up, the fuel line filled with bubbles, where did the air come from? maybe the clunk was not in the fuel, or you have a pin hole in the fuel line inside the tank. Cheers
i just added a pressure nipple to the FG-20 muffler and i had to do 1 or 2 clicks leaner, the reason behind doing it was when i held the plane up the fuel line got full of air bubbles. i have heard of someone doing this to a NGH9cc engine and it worked for him so i didn't see why not to do it the Saito
RE: I need the rpms for a 1.60fx swinging an 18x6w apc
G'day Mate, That is good RPM, but, it will over rev in the air, load it up with AT LEAST an 18x8, a 16 or 17x10 is better. The OS 160 FX has amazing torque, & will happily swing a larger higher pitch prop. Remember this is not a 46, it is a 1.60Cu in, or 26cc & 10,000RPM is flat out. I have 2 of them, & ran both of them in on an 16x14 APC prop. PS, I have the manual, if you need it PM me. Enjoy

RE: Running brushless at less than rated volts?
G'day Mate, I think it will just run slower, because you are using less voltage, It won't swing as large a prop, for the same reason. As long as the ESC will handle the current, that's the main thing. Cheers

G'day Mate, I don't know much about A123 batteries, But I would discharge them slowly, using a good quality charger/Discharger, using the correct voltages for A123 cells, then charge, again using the correct voltage, but at a slow charge rate, & again discharge, that will tell you, pretty close anyway, the capacity of the cells. RE: Should I Be Worried?
ORIGINAL: rgm762 sorry but the Past for some of this is less than two months, we had a member lose a plane about a month and a half ago due to a spektrum rx failure, and i'm sure horizon will replace it when/if the plane is ever found just like they did the other four and within the last TWO years we have had six different members lose airplanes due to the DXi6 radio problems, to me, the spektrum problems are too severe to pat them on the back and say ''good job''
G'day Mate, All I want to ask is, how can you, or anyone else for that matter, decide that it was RX failure, when the plane has not been found. Is it not just as possible, that there was a battery issue, or a switch failure, or any one of a hundred other possible faults, including pilot error, that have nothing to do with radio failure. I crashed a brand new Giles 202, on it's maiden flight, a few years ago, took off fine, made left turn fly down parrallel with the strip, right turn, going straight, & down she went, I had time to shut throttle, but that was it. Was it Rx failure, Tx failure, switch, batteries, Tx aerial, servo failure causing batteries to loose voltage. Well, it turned out to be the battery, it was a 4.8 volt 1700Mah Nicad, cycled fine, charged fine, but under the load of six analogue servos, of which none were moving when it crashed, as it was flying straight & level. The battery was stuffed, it was about 3 years old, & it just failed. My fault for not replacing it. But we live, we learn. The radio was JR, but NOT 2.4 Ghz. So it does'nt matter what you fly or what radio you use to fly it, THE BASICS MUST BE OBSERVED, battery, sufficient for the job, Insatallation, everything setup correctly, switch adequate for the current required. And so on, you get the idea. So lets forget BRAND BASHING, because there will be crashes with EVERY brand of radio, the manufacturers can't allow for dumb thumbs, or bad setups. See pix of my Giles 202, just before first & last flight. Cheers

RE: Spectrum DX7
ORIGINAL: dutchy50 Buying Spectrum DX7 Airplane from the USA, am wanting to use it in Australia. What changes would I need to make . dutchy50
G'day Mate, There would be a problem with the "C" tick, it won't be approved for use in Australia. So you won't be covered by insurance, in Australia. Also the charger will be the wrong input voltage, & you will need to specify mode 1 or 2, most sets sold in the USA are mode 2, if you fly that mode it is not a problem, but, if you fly mode 1, it can't easily be changed. I checked out the options of buying one from the USA, & it was not worth the hassles, & would not have saved enough money, so I bought mine here, made more sense to me, especially after you take freight into account, buying one in USA won't save much at all.

RE: OS 160 FX
ORIGINAL: 1/4 Scale I currently put an OS 160 FX in a CMP PT-40 Warhawk with a 16x10 Master Airscrew wood prop. Instructions say 1,800-10,000 operating range. I am currently getting 9,400 rpm and thought that was perfect. I realize in the air it will be much higher. Should I go to an 18x10 and does anyone know how many rpm it will drop.
G'day Mate, I found that judicious throttle control will stop the engine over revving with a 16x10 APC, or try a 17x10 APC, the 16x10 will give more pulling power for uplines, as it won't slow down as quickly as a 17x10. Try em & decide for yourself.

RE: 4 Digital Trims Radios
ORIGINAL: doublesixes When will JR offer a high end radio with ALL 4 digital trims? In this day and age of computerized devices, it's inconceivable that a brand like JR does not offer that must have feature. Please guys, get on with the program! I almost bought the 9503 as an upgrade from my DX7 until I realized that missing feature. Many at my field are turned off by this archaic design. I'm seriously considering the A9 or even a Futaba.
G'day Mate, It's only in the USA that JR have an analogue trim on the throttle, here in Australia & Europe we have all digital trims on the Spektrum DX7 & the high end JR radios, like the DSX9, which is similar to your X9303, except it has all digital trims. So the DSX9 can be changed, easily, to any of the 4 modes.

G'day Mate, Sounds like you are overpriming the engine, & possibly your tank is too high, causing siphoning, connect glow driver, with carb set to high idle, connect glow driver & then hit it with the starter, it will fire when it has the correct fuel charge, & away you go.

RE: World Models Sky Raider Mach 1 -Balance ?
ORIGINAL: bsumrell Have a new World Models Sky Raider Mach 1 trainer arf. Pretty decent plane, went together pretty well, but the balance point is not making sense. The balance point they have listed is 80mm(3 1/8'') from the LE although the spar in the wing is about 3 3/4 from the LE. No major bashing, put the plane together pretty much as per instructions with the exceptions of 30 min epoxy being used on the tail feathers. Have all items(battery, receiver, servos etc.) placed per instructions. If I hold the plane at their recommended CG point, the plane is tail heavy. If I hold the plane at the spar like normal, the plane is balanced perfectly and sits level. It has been my little experience that most simple high wing planes such as this one should have the CG located at the spar. Am I missing something here? Do I balance at the spar or at their suggested location? Thanks for any advice. Bryan
G'day Mate, Balance it at 85mm back from leading edge, I have set up 4 of them, for my students, & that is the best balance point, it will settle into a gentle slightly nose down glide at this point. Try it. but don't over do the control throws, keep them at the suggested amounts.

RE: Engine performance with a pitts muffler
G'day Marcel, Some people mistake back pressure for muffler pressure, back pressure in a 2 stroke is a function of the exhaust, as in 2 stroke motorcycles, they have an expansion chamber muffler, that helps to suck exhaust gasses out of the combustion chamber, thus allowing a better fuel air mixture, for the next cycle. Muffler pressure generates a relatively small positive pressure in the fuel tank, to help push fuel up to the carburettor, thus allowing for aerobatics & differences in attitude of the aircraft, but, the engine should still run without muffler pressure, because the suction caused by the piston going up sucks air & fuel into the engine, if this suction is not strong enough, the engine will not run anyway. Remember 4 strokes run best without back pressure, is in a car, straight through exhaust pipes, without any back pressure work best, but of course are noisy. So any problems with Pitts style mufflers are usually because of insuffient running in, &/or bad tuning.

RE: Engine performance with a pitts muffler
G'day Marcel, I use a Bisson pitts muffler on an OS 61FX, & an OS 160FX, they don't adversely effect either engine, they both run great, BTW they are both mounted sideways, so the exhaust outlets point down.

RE: Mode 1 vs. Mode 2
ORIGINAL: Salinas Hawk The separation of aileron and elevator seems superior to me, more precise; and the rest of the world swears by it. However, if the real thing (fighters and sport planes) use a mode 2 configuration, then the argument is seemingly over. Mode 2 is King. But please consider arcade flight vs. full scale flight. Also, how do these skills cross over. I mean...I respect RC car driver skills, but let's be honest, Daytona 500 stock car drivers are not on this forum asking rc drivers for advice. Is there really a connection between rc flight and full-ized pilotingv skills? I haven't the slightesst idea; thus the post, Respectfully, Salinas Hawk
G'day Mate, Here in Australia, our most common mode is mode 1, I have been using it since 1981, & as an Instructor, I find it is easier to teach mode 1 than mode 2, reason being, we can have both people using the TX at the same time, the student starts out using the right stick, throttle & ailerons, or whatever the primary control is, & the instructor has the elevators & the rudder, even if the student gets into trouble, the instructor can still level the wings with rudder, & save the plane, without having to wrestle the TX back from the student, as long as he or she lets go of the stick. Then we swap, & the student uses the elevators. It is a good way to learn & a good way to teach. It is a lot harder with mode 2, as the student has the TX, with all the mistakes he or she will make. But we also have a course to become an instructor, & guidelines about how to teach, it has worked well here for many years, maybe it should be looked at by your governing body. One last thing, I have heard for years that mode 2 is more natural, because it is like a "real plane's controls", I have one small problem with that, in a full size aircraft, you are IN the plane, in our case we are standing outside looking up at it, so there is no real reason to use mode 2, other than, having someone able to teach you. If you stick to mode 1 you will be like some of us in the rest of the world.

RE: Inverted 4 stroke
ORIGINAL: bushong572 I have a new (2 tanks run thru it on a test stand) Thunder Tiger .91 four stroke. I've installed it on a Top Flite P47 ARF inverted. I cannot get the engine to idle reliably. It wants to load up (rich) very quickly after removing the glo driver. I can't lean the low speed needle enough to solve the problem without the idle becoming so lean it won't transition. It runs well at wide open throttle. I'm running a OS ''F'' plug (different plugs did not help). It will idle fine with the glo driver attached. The tank is 1'' higher then the needle valve...I've never had this problem with a 4 stroke. Any ideas????? Regulator?????? On board glo driver?????????????? I've thought about adding a onboard glow driver, but I've heard many won't work with a Futaba 2.4 Thanks
G'day Mate, The tank is too high, causing excessive rich running at idle, drop the tank, the centre line of thetank should be level with or no more than 10mm or 3/8" below the fuel nipple on the carby. Set it up like this then continue to run it in, I hate the term break in, after all, are you really trying to break it. It needs to run in to form a seal between the ring & the liner, this is what helps to suck fuel in & push exhaust out of the engine, 2 or 4 stroke.

RE: OS 120 FS
ORIGINAL: davisf I have an interesting problem. I bought an airplane at an auction. It had an engine in it. THe engine turned out to be a OS 120 FS. He told me that the motor was running, but smoked a lot. We started it up and tuned it and flew it without any problems.. About the 5th flight I discovered that the pushrod covers were leaking and that the o rings were GONE. So I took the head off and discovered that BOTH pushrods are bent! So here come the questions: By the way; This engine looks like a Saito with two distinct valve covers. Not a suspass. It could date back a long ways! Does anyone have a copy of the manual for this engine? Should the push rods be bent? When both are bent and the engine is runing, I have to wonder? How do I adjust the valves? The area under the valve where the gauge goes seems to be covered. Thanks Davis
G'day Mate, I have had mine since new in 1983, I have replaced the main bearing once, about 3 years ago, it runs sweet. Don't run it on castor, use coolpower oil @ 18%, 10% nitro, & either a 16x8 or 16x6 prop, I have run a 17x6 APC, but the plane it is on flew best with a 16x8, don't be tempted to use a smaller prop or it will over rev, & DIE. It is the first OS 120 size 4 stroke & as such produces much less power than today's 120's, but it has lots of torque, & should be propped accordingly. The "O" rings can be bought easily from a bearing supplier, as well as the bearings, should you need them. As far as the pushrods go, I would be VERY careful when trying to straighten them, they probably got bent from over revving. It's a common user error, with 4 strokes.
