RE: MT70CC TWIN
This is positively my last post on the MT70. Go to page 29 to see the history I have with this engine. After Jack, at MT engines sent my engine back to China to have the mfg repair it, Jody at Valley View sent me a new engine. The first 5 minute run was fine. After the second run I found a cylinder head bolt hanging out. The threads were stripped. I retapped it and set the engine aside for a couple of months. I decided to run it a couple of more times before mounting it in a plane. After about sixteen ounces of fuel, in two separate runs at about 1/2 throttle, the engine blew the left cylinder partially off. All runs were with gas oil at about 35:1. I removed the cylinder and found that the piston skirt had two pieces broken off. I will definately wash my hands of all MT products after this fiasco. I now have two cylinders, two mufflers. two of the 14/32 size spark plugs, one carb with reed block, one crankshaft, two connecting rods, one piston and a complete ignition system. If there is anyone out there that can use these parts, a sixty dollar money order will get them to you priority mail in the lower 48. Email me at alburman@e-isco.com. AL BURMAN

Twin motor hookup
I am not new to RC, but relatively new to electric. All my planes from 1.20 I have converted to electric and everything above are gas powered. I am finishing up on a twin otter and have questions about wiring the esc's to the receiver. 1. I can wire both receiver plugs to a Y connector and to the receiver. 2. I can cut one of the red wires and then a Y connector to the receiver. 3. I can use two receivers and connect them seperately with left side ailerons and flaps on the left esc and the other side on the right side esc with the rudder and nose wheel steering also seperated. 4. I can cut both red wires and use a seperate flight battery pack. Which would be the best way to go? Thanks in advance for your knowledge. Al Burman

Mostly as I suspected, they are sending out poorly assembled boxes of trouble. If I ever get my 70s back from China, I'll try to reassemble it myself. Whether or not I'd trust it on one of my planes is a different story. I have had pretty good luck with all of my Chinese engines before this one though. Al Burman

Hi Tom, When I ordered this engine Vally View had not as yet advertised them. I was kind of caught in the middle. I ordered it from MT Engines and they had none in stock at the time. They had Valley View mail me one. Since I didn't buy it from Valley View, I expected that MT would be responsible for the warranty. So far, not a lot of luck. Al Burman

RE: MT70CC TWIN
I guess I'm just a sucker for new and different. I'm not short of engines. At this time I have a FL52 which was on a giant Stik but I replaced it with a G-62 for more power, an XYZ 50 on a Sun Dancer, a 3MM53TOC on a Yak and an SPE26 on an Ultimate. There's also a BME 50, A G-38 and a couple of Poulon 46 conversions on other planes all of which seem to run well. Maybe the laws of averages have run out for me and I was due to get a dud, or maybe I just have too many planes. IF, I do get the MT70 back from China, I'll give it a fair test before I give up on it, but, there's no sense in throwing more good money after bad. Thanks for the replys, Al Burman

RE: MT70CC TWIN
I bought one of the MT70s a couple of months ago. I couldn't get it to spark and when I returned the ignition unit Tomy sent me a new one right away. It wouldn't spark with the new unit either and then I noticed that the gap was pretty large partly due to the magnet being recessed a couple of millimeters into the hub. I sent the engine back to MT for repair and they installed an updated crankcase. Now when I tried to run it, it would fire but would not keep running. I noticed that the left cylinder was wobbling and allowing air to enter the case. When I tried to tighten the bolts I found that two bolts on the left cylinder were stripped out and one on the right cylinder was also stripped out. Lots of locktite in evidence, but no threads. I returned the engine again and Jack sent me an email telling me that I shouldn't have removed the cylinders. Further he was going to reassemble it with more locktite. I informed him that locktite was not a solution. He then replied that since I didn't think the locktite was a good fix he was returning the engine to the manufacturer in China to repair it and get it running. I'm about ready to write off the $500 as a bad experience. If I do get it back and still have a problem with stripped bolts, I'm just going to drill out the 3mm bolt holes and tap them for 10-32 screws. So far this engine has had far more air time between here and Florida the on any of my planes. Good luck to all. Al Burman

RE: LiFe Battery
I did fly it over the past weekend with very good results. I flew a seven minute flight of various throttle settings. When I landed I could hold the slightly warm motor in my hand. The battery was only slightly warm and the esc was cool. The battery is a 4500Ma and it took 3700 Ma to recharge it at 1/2C. It had been a week since since I charged the battery before I flew it. I think that effectively proves that the first battery was defective. Thanks for all the advice. Al Burman

RE: LiFe Battery
The charger I was using is a Thunder Power 610C charger and discharger. From what I can read in the user manual it will do anything and also read you bedtime stories. My initial charge was at about 1/2 C. What I can glean from the answers is that the battery was bad from the get go. I have another that I'm going to try this weekend. I also have a couple of LiPo's of the same size and will probably try them also to see if the highter voltage boosts the performance a bit. Thanks for the input. Al

RE: LiFe Battery
I guess I needed to give you a little more info. The Battery is a Turnigy from Hobby King. I've heard good and bad about them, but my experience has been all good to this time. It's a six series 4500 Ma Li-Fe with a c rating of 30-40. As I said, this was my first electric and I wanted to give a try. I bought two of these batteries and on initial charge, (thunder power charger) one charged to full and the other shut off after a few minutes and gave a message that the #4 cell was going into overcharge. That was the one I flew with. The plane is a 1.20 size stick that I was previously flying with a Moki 1.35. The performance wasn't as good as with the Moki, but it was acceptable and I just wanted to see if it would fly the plane. I may be wrong but to my thinking a c rating of 30 would indicate that an amperage draw of 135 amps would be acceptable and I know it wasn't pulling it's max rating. I think it's very possible that the whole swelling problem was due to a faulty battery. Since I modified the connector I know it's not returnable. I'm just looking for some enlightenment. I'll probably fly the other battery this weekend. Thanks for any info. Al Burman

LiFe Battery
I flew my first electric this morning with a 4500Ma LiFe, 35-40 Amp Battery. After about 8 minutes of flight, mostly at about 1/2 throttle I landed and found that the motor was warm, not hot, the 60 amp speed control was cool to the touch and the battery was very warm but not hot and the battery was bulging. The battery could be squeezed and the bulge was liking squeezing a balloon. After about an hour, I pierced the plastic wrap around the battery to relieve any pressure, being careful to only cut the plastic wrap and a liquid started bubbling out. I thought this would not occur with a li-ion or li-fe battery. Can anyone out there tell me what's going on with this battery. Thanks, Al Burman

WHEN SCOTT ELLINGSON FIRST STARTED CONVERTING POULON 46 ENGINES, I BOUGHT THREE OF THEM FROM HIM. THEY RAN GREAT BUT HE FELT THAT THE MUFFLERS HE HAD MADE UP WERE TOO RESTRICTIVE, SO IN TRUE SCOTT MANNER HE SENT ME THREE OF THE NEW ONE'S HE HAD MADE UP. HE DIDN'T WANT THE OLD ONE'S BACK AND I JUST THREW THEM IN MY PARTS DRAWER. I DIDN'T LIKE THE G-38 MUFFLER SO I TRIED ONE OF SCOTT'S MUFFLERS AND IT FIT PERFECTLY. IF YOU WANT ONE, SEND ME YOUR ADDRESS AND I'LL DROP ONE IN THE MAIL FOR YOU. AL

RE: new to gas power issue
Any time you ask a question on RCU, you will get several replies based on individual personal experience. Some good, some not so good. It's true that equal displacement engines, glow and gas, the glow will always have more power. That being said, the gas engine will run about two to three times longer on the same amount of fuel and comparing the price of glow fuel to gas you can easily triple that. Just go for it with whatever engine you have. Once you try gas you will probably want more engines anyway and you can always upgrade. Good Luck! Al Burman

HAPPYPAPPY, This particular engine was in use quite often. It hadn't been in storage at all. I will try soaking the idle barrell in methanol to see if it swells the rings though. Thanks, Al

Moki 1.35 problem
I love Moki Engines. I ran into a problem though that someone might be able to help with. I had a flame out and found that the idle adjustment barrell had rotated 90 degrees off center. The barrell was so loose that it was in danger of falling out. The "O" rings appeared good, but I replaced them anyway with some rings that fit the grooves. Although they were tighter, they still wouldn't hold adjustment. I ordered some moki seals but they haven't arrived as yet. Is there some kind of a sealer that has to be used when replacing these seals? Can anyone help? Al Burman

Fasst system problem
I've been using hitec with no problems but decided to try 2.4 to eliminate any ignition noise problems. I got the 6 channel fasst system and immediately ran into a problem. I use an rcat switch to control the engine ignition and usually connect it to either channel 5 or 6. On ch 5, although I can operate a servo, it wont actuate the rcat switch. The flap switch operates nothing. I can connect the rcat switch on ch 1,2,3,or 4 and the switch will work perfectly. Any help out there? Al Burman

RE: Nitro Planes Bobcat
I also lost one that was uncontrollable immediately after take off. My mistake was that I forgot a basic rule of balancing. If the fuel tank is in front of the CG, balance with the tank empty. If the fuel tank is behind the CG as on the Bobcat, balance with the tank full. I CG'ed with an empty tank. When I fueled it, I had put about eleven ounces behind the CG making it extremely tail heavy. You know the rule, a nose heavy plane fly's poorly but a tail heavy plane flys only once. Al Burman

Great Planes Giant Aeromaster
I finally got around to flying a Giant Aeromaster ARF that I bought last year. It is one great flying bird. Probably the smoothest Bipe I own. It's powered with one of Scott Ellingson's Poulon 46 engines. On the first landing, the landing gear fabrication separated from the aluminum. I called GP and they sent me a new one. Again on the first landing it all came apart again. The Nov 2006 Model Airplane News did a test of the plane and the same thing happened to them. They fixed the problem by wrapping the gear with strapping tape. Is anyone else having this problem. I can't believe that I'm the only one. If so how did you fix it? Al Burman

RE: Nitromodels Tiger Moth Build along?
I've tried to get some info from nitro planes about securing the top wing panels to the top center section. After the second email, they referred me to this forum. I ran into the same problems as most of the posters. I glued the tail feathers as well as using the screws. I usually toss all the metric screws into a draw and use sae sockets so when it came to mounting the cabanes, I had plenty of slightly longer screws which enabled me to get the lock nuts to thread all the way through. I decided that when I can get the tubes through the top wing and center panel so that they fit well, (there's about a 1/16 gap right now) I'm going to smear some epoxy on the joints where the tubes go in and make it a one piece wing. At that poing I'll have to depend on the flying wires to hold it all together. I have an OS120 pumper in the nose. Al Burman
