RE: Which would you rather build on?
I like to lay a sheet of drywall (sheetrock) on top of my bench; I've had better luck with the drywall holding pins firmly vs a ceiling tile. Plus you can get big sheets & it's cheap to replace when I get globs of stuff glued to it.

RE: Eddie ..... Jalopaplane
I can tell you that Karen was extremely good to deal with in person at the Toledo Show, and promised to send me a set of Jalopaplane wheels within a couple of weeks (they had run out). That was April. I emailed Karen about a month after the show, she promised the wheels would be delivered within 2 weeks. Those 2 weeks went by, and several more, before I again tried to contact her in every way possible with no response whatsoever. I have tried several email addresses, PM, and even found her on Facebook. No replies. The phone number for Eddie A Aircraft is disconnected. Things happen and people get busy, but this is beyond the point of reason. Very disappointed; might have a kit/plans/glass (less wheels of course) for sale here soon.

15x6 APC, Saito 100 in a Great Planes Super Skybolt (arf) on built-up floats. Good combination, also flies well with this prop on wheels.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Hi everybody I just picked up a NIB P51 & DA-50 with Keleo exhaust & Sierra retracts,,,, can't wait to get it flying! Somewhere I found a step-by-step post on how to beef up the shear webbing in the landing gear area, and of course I can't find it now. Can anybody provide a link, or just a short description of the modification that needs to be made? I fly from grass & would rather do a controlled surgery now versus a more substantial repair later. Also, any thougts on Hitec 645's all over vs 5625's or 5645's? I need to order a bunch of servos for this one ASAP. thanks!

RE: Ziroli giant P-47
FINALLY finished mine! 32 pounds, 3W85-xi Robart retracts, jomar sequencer on the doors. HS-645's on flaps 5625's on ailerons 1/4 scale servos on rudder & elevator HS-81's on retract valves 425's on choke & throttle Now I'm terrified to fly it! I fly a lot of aerobatic type planes, my only warbird experience is with my top flite Corsair (60-size). Anybody have any advice on how the big Jug would compare to the little Corsair? My biggest concern is length of runway needed to land; I have about 300' of good grass at my favorite site. (plenty of approach clearance).

3W-85xi help needed.. reeds?
Hi everybody. I just finished building my Ziroli P47 with a 3W-85xi in the nose and am having some trouble… First of all, I bought this engine from a reputable guy here on RCU, even Gerhard at Aircraft International gave the seller (and this particular engine) the “thumbs up”. The engine sat for about 18 months, until today when I tried to run it. My first attempts to start the beast resulted in 9000 prop flips, without a single pop. I disassembled the carb & cleaned everything out…. No cracked diaphragms, but there was a little bit of junk in there. Put back together….and after way way too many flips, it popped, then started. Phew; got two short runs.. just enough to warm the engine up & adjust the needles a bit. It actually ran quite well, until it quit when I was messing with the idle position (got it just a bit too low). It did not burble, hestitate, idle rough, or anything along those lines. I tried to restart, and here’s where things got strange…… couldn’t get it to start without choke, with choke etc…. spark is good & yes there is fuel in the tank! I flipped a few more time and then noticed there was fuel running out the exhaust. I noticed it ‘cause it went “poof” (ignited!). The engine didn’t backfire violently, it just made a “whoosh” sound as it burnt off the fuel. I’m glad I didn’t burn the plane up or anything else. I flipped a few more times & the same thing happened. That’s where I stopped. Strangely, when I pulled the spark plug out, the plug was dry & I did not get a puddle of gas from the combustion chamber (as it would if severely flooded). So, I pulled the motor once again & dissected down to the reeds. I have no idea what I should be looking for to determine if the reeds are good/bad…. But something tells me that they should be sealing fairly well. I can see a small gap between the reeds & the cage at the very tips of the reeds…. Probably 0.010” to 0.030” depending on how things are sitting. Neither the reeds or the reed block have any obvious damage or warping; it's something very slight if anything. What should I be looking for in the reeds?? How well should the reeds be sealing against airflow toward the carb? This engine was at Aircraft International just before I bought it (no run time since inspection), can reeds go bad from just sitting around? I have no idea if this could be the culprit, but the gap just looked strange to me. Help please!

RE: top flite corsair build questions
I'm ready to re-maiden my TF corsair... last flight ended a little hard after I obliged a reqeust from the peanut gallery to "put 'er in a spin!". I couldn't get it out without the help of the ground. All rebuild & just about ready to go. Anyway, what is the concensus on balance point? (gear up or gear down?) the manual reccomends 4.25" with the gear down... just seems strange to balance it gear down knowing the cg will shift back when the gear is retracted. Double-checking before I put it in the air again.

RE: Are there any 'Vintage' hobby shops in your area ?
Sad to say, but my primary source for anything RC is mail order these days. I'm primarily into larger scale warbirds (ziroli, etc) and nitro helis. I feel bad for the hobby shop folks based on my observations that the wisdom and advice they have, which was once rare to find, is now readily available via the web, and the building expertise they have & help create has been replaced & obsoleted with "almost ready to fly/crash/replace" kits. I probably don't offically qualfiy as an "older" rc pilot (33 years old... in the hobby for almost all of 'em?)... but can say that there aren't any of the sort of stores you mention within 75 miles of Manitou Beach, MI anymore. (includes Toledo, OH, jackson, Lansing, Ann Arbor, most of Detroit, etc). When I was a pup & building my first Eagle 63, Hobby Stop West in Toledo was the kind of place you described... "Lester" was like an RC grandpa to me, & there was the regular crowd there just hanging out, buying some stuff, and having a good time. They have since changed hands, changed locations, and (along with the rest of the RC retail community) changed product offering from kits & supplies to ARF's. the "experience" of going to the store has changed correspondingly (hobby stop and everywhere else). The new Hobby Stop West location leaves me not wanting to venture into there neighborhood after dark without protection (literally)... And I'm not at all squeamish (nor looking for trouble).... Bad part of town. There is a HobbyTown USA in the Toledo area ( a joke for true RC'rs), and there used to be a Riders Hobby (gone). TNT landing gear, near the Toledo airport, has a small, friendly, and supportive retail presence, but is fairly limited in selection. I buy whatever I can from them (and it's a good motorcycle ride!), but odds are they won't have what I need.

RE: more servo questions
you're correct in thinking that a standard y-harness will not change the direction of one servo... there are reversing y's which do this; but for this case, you don't need/want one.

RE: more servo questions
You should be ablt to mount the servos without powering them up.. Just be sure to mount them so you're using a servo horn position on the inboard (toward the fuselage) or outboard (toward the wingtip) on BOTH servos...That way you're getting "push" from one servo & "pull" from the other when you move the aileron stick. When you do get the crystal, just remove the horns from the servos, then power up the system, then put the horns back on with the aileron stick and trim in the neutral position. hope this helps.

RE: Hostetler Decathlon and DA-85
I've got the 30% kit which will end up on floats... I'll likely use a 3w-80 on this one. Overkill, but I'm afraid my other option (G62) might not be enough for unlimited vertical with the floats

RE: SAITO 182 TWIN - POST PICTURES OF YOUR PLANE
I had my 182T in a Great Planes Gee Bee; and it's now destined for a Pica Waco when I get around ro building it. I thought about putting it in a 1/4 cub on floats, but the carbs might stick through the top of the cowl (same problem on a spacewalker?). Another thought I've had for this engine would be a Top Flite Sea Fury, as it reportedly needs lots of nose weight.

paint & rivet question
I’m ready to put the rivets on my ziroli P47 & had a question for the finishing gurus out there…. I’ve got the plane all glassed & primed with PPG shopline primer/surfacer; and have the panel lines in using the usual chart tape/primer method. The plane now has the typical mottled, sanded primer look. I’m planning to use various brands of aluminum spray paint to achieve a paneled look without the tedious (but beautiful) use of flite-metal. I wondered if I should spray a base coat of black before the aluminum paint, and if this base coat is a good idea should I spray it before or after I add the rivets? I know it’s not 100% scale, but I’m going to burn the rivets in with a soldering iron & brass tube. I’ve heard that a coat of paint prior to burning the rivets can give a sharper line.

RE: CONVERTING KADET TO ELECTRIC
Another standoff option is plastic pipe; one piece which fits just inside the three or four mounting bolts. I use pcs of 4-40 full threaded rod if I can't get screws/bolts long enough. I have found the plastic tailpipe for sink drains to be a handy size for motors like AXI 2820 or so & it's the right wall thickness too.

Well, the tamiya mini-cva shocks are on & they fit fine! Tamiya supplies two lengths of lower ball ends with these shocks... using the longer ones makes the mini-cva shocks the same length as stock shocks. They come with the ball studs as well. (part number 50746) Have fun!

I've just been eyeballing the unassembled parts vs the stock shocks... They are the shocks listed on Tower's website for WW2. good thought on the longer lower ball end; I think I'd like the distance as I do venture into the grass to terrorize the neighbor kids on occasion! roll on primer instead of spray?
I have my usual dilemma in the middle of a Michigan winter.... I'm ready for primer on my latest fiberglassed project, but don't have a heated spraybooth handy. Has anyone rolled on the primer instead of spraying it? I'm using a 2-part primer (PPG shopline primer/surfacer). I could roll the primer on in my basement workshop, but I am curious about 1) it's behavior of the primer when rolled, and 2) if the cat & I will end up dead as a result of the fumes. I know this stuff is really nasty on the 'ol respiratory system, but I'm not sure if it's the fumes of the paint itself or the vapor/mist created when spraying. Any thoughts?

RE: Futaba Rx install coverup?
I'm one of probably many who is itching to buy the 12FG while they're cheap.... But can't stomach the though of losing a big warbird to a seemingly recurrring problem!! I have been searching for hours regarding the R6014 heat issue.. Nothing I've read so far makes me feel good about the potential risk. I even thought of buying a 72mhz 12FG system & swithcing it to 2.4 later... But with just a little research I've found that there are some questions about the G3 PCM as well?? Maybe I'll just continue with my 9CS, which has been bulletproof, and wait 'till next winter for a 12/14 channel 2.4 system. ugh! If we knew of a new rec coming out, AND Futaba would exchange R6014's for the "rumored" new rec; I'd buy. Frustrating.

If Hobby Lobby still carried the Atlas 2815 motors, I would have gotten those... but they dont. The atlas setups were quite a bit less $$ than axi setups.. if money were no object I would have picked Axi 2814's. I can always throttle back/prop down with the bigger motors... at least that's what I was thinking.
