RE: 3W55I & 3w80XI Question ?
I can not compare 50-85 cc engines as I have only da50 but I have experience with 4 different engines in 100cc class, namely bme110extreme, da100 new version, 3w106 classic and 3w106TOC. For smoothness first comes the bme (runs like an electric) than da and last 3w(I can say 3w really shakes essipecially near idle). For power 3w is consirably superior to both da and bme. 3wTOC>3wclassic>da~bme.

RE: 3M Mintor engines
I had one 170 for my comp-arf impact and could not able to get a proper idle no matter what. Over 2500 rpm it was smooth and powerful as an electric motor. I could not be able to fly with it and eventually I took it out an put an OS 140rx instead. May be it was the carb. But I will no way be tring a new carb and spending some more precious weekend time. Just will leave it as a show piece on the sideboard...

RE: Ultra RC 87" Yak Build and Fly
Joe, with the given dimensions the prop hub stays a little up from the center of the mounted cowl. In other words the intersection of horizontal and vertical lines is about 3 mm up from the center of the fuse circle when you look from front. You can mount your engine 2 or 3 mm down with no problem and it will provide you more area on the firewall for safe drilling. And probably the result will be better in terms of aesthetics.

RE: FLITON EDGE 540 FREESTYLE they did it again
Sweet! That's what I was looking for. How did you join the elevator halves? and approximately where did you place the elevator and rudder servos? One more question: Did you use Dubro, or Sullivan hardware?...or does it matter? THanks in advance, Steve
I believe either dubro or sullivan will be ok. I just used nylon horns for keeping the weight down. You do not need the join the elevator halves, you should make the same setup for both halves and tie them to the same elevator servo which is placed sideways in the middle, aft of rudder servo. A picture could worth a lot but unfortunately I can not supply one. In the extra there were three servo cut outs on the servo tray ( one on the front two on the back) and the one on the front was in the middle that I used for rudder. I placed the elevator servo just behind it. As far as I see the servo tray on the edge should be modified for this setup.

RE: FLITON EDGE 540 FREESTYLE they did it again
I made a pull pull elevator set up for the extra. It is solid and and lighter than the stock setup as you can get rid of the wood dowel and wires. Just like most pattern planes you should put the elevator servo sideways for the perfect geometry. As I lost my extra because of a battery failure, I cannot get a picture of the servo. It was really a perfect flying plane. Fortunately my edge is on the way and I will make the same setup and power it with YS63s.

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
Try apc 18x6w. I had one turning it 8600 with 15% nitro. you will see a huge difference in performance.
ORIGINAL: remcl1 My Saito 180 is not up to snuff yet. I bought it off a guy who just got it back from HH. A tree came out and got in his way and broke the valve cover off, it has new push rods and tubes and some other stuff. HH went through it, fixed it, and gave it a clean bill of health. It needs a little break- in. I am only getting 8,500 RPM with a zinger 18 x 6. What do you guys think, is it the prop. Is this prop limiting my RPM or do I need to get her a little more broke in. It does not have a new ring, so it should not take long. I have about 3/4 gallon through it. Anyway what are your prop suggestions. I
RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
I have the wing all the way back with YS160, cg at 9.25" and 10.5 lbs dry. Right rudder needs %1 aileron (same direction) no elevator mix and left rudder needs %1 up elevator and no aileron. In other words almost perfect knife edge performance. At this setting allthough it needs little push when inverted it is feels a tad tail heavy IMO but I am happy with this setting.

160dz does not stop
Hi Dave, My 160DZ starts easily, has perfect transition and awesome power, however it does not stop when the carb is closed completely as if it has an air leak. I stop the engine by turning the high needle all the way in. I richened the reg a little but the transition and idle become bad so readjusted to the original position. Also the high needle is not sensitive at all. From 1 1/2 to 3 turns nothing changes. Is this normal?

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
Hi Mike T5, You had a few answers to your question before. It depends how you want to fly your plane. I think if you fly hard 3D it won't be adequate. I also think the right prop for your engine is 17*6 apc for the best performance regarding to your tach readings. For good 3D performance you should have 9 lbs at max. The new maxair 68" velox and funtana 90 can match your engine better. I agree that your engine is unique and nice.. Happy flying.

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
First of all with the weight of the engine you stated you may have balancing issues. If you fly aggressive 3D IMO the power will not be enough. I think funtana 90 will be better match for your engine. But if you fly pattern mostly or do not need very high power to weight ratio than you may go for it and put some lead on the nose if it needs.

RE: Lanier Yak
Just measure the inside diameter of your cowl when you get it. BME110 cap to cap distance is about 10.5". I believe this thing is bigger than we think... Really excited about it. If the weight figures comes out good, it will be the airframe for my DA50.
Oh... and the cowl is way too narrow... otherwise I mighta done it...
In the pictures on the Lanier site DA50 plug cap sticks out the cowl very slightly.. In BME the distance from the center to the plug cap is about 0.5" shorter and DA. I think you can hide the engine in the cowl if you really want to...[;)]

If you will break the bank why don't you consider bme110 extreme? if it is power it beats 60-80cc, if it is weight it beats again at 64oz bare. [:)]

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
After waiting for a long time for the weather I did the madien flight at last. My configuration is as follows.. YS 160 with gator soft mount prop biela 20*6 6975 on elevators and ailerons 5955 on rudder 85bb on throttle apogee 830 lipo with 6V reg for the reciever dry weight 10.5lbs (Did some mods on the engine box, and under the fuse for the graphtech F90 landing gear) CG is at 9.25" from LE at the root. What I was expecting from this bird was a better overall performance than my funtana 90 (8.6lbs with YS110 17*6apc). My first impression is it is far better on pattern flight. Needs very little push when inverted but does not seem it would be better with a more aft cg. This thing flies like a pattern ship. I did not notice any need for mixings for the KE at first glance. When it comes to slow flight and 3D maneuvers, I should admit it has pros and cons compared to funtana. First the cons.. It can do all the tricks for sure but it does not fly lighter and harier flight is easier with funtana (both upright and inverted). It is more challenging to stay the wings level when making rudder turns. Also the ailerons should be a little bigger for my liking. When hovering if you are on the sweet spot it was impossible to stop rolling with right aileron inputs ( I have 45 degrees on ailerons). The pros.. All the other stuff but my favorites was high apha KE, power KE spins and waterfalls. In oder to make nice flat spins I think you should need less throws. After the short test of slow flight I decided to trim for the pattern flight and noticed the elevator flutter on KE flight. Immediately cut the throttle and landed. It was really fun to land this bird. I can say that it is the easiest landing plane I have ever flown. When I checked the elevtors I noticed that the horns was not firm and the skin was moving as if there was no hard points installed beneath. I removed the horns and cut the skin and there were no hardwood as expected. I prepared two hardwood pieces and epoiexed them in the junction of rib, leading edge and upper skin. Then I put a little monocote trim sheet and installed the horn. It is solid as rock now. I think you should check your horns also. Now looking forward a nice whether for the trim flight.

RE: Fliton Extra 330 Freestyle Who's Got One?
I used one servo with pull pull setup on the elevators. Very light and solid setup with 45 degrees of throw. I also have it with saito 82. With cf lg and mini servos all around (225) and 640lipo it came out 5.5 lbs. Superb performance. You can see the photo for the exits on the first pages.

RE: Saito 125 anybody? Finnaly coming are way
Of course you can overpower anything if you're willing to accept the weight penalty of that larger case, but that also means you will have a different sweet spot for wing areas and loadings than the lighter installations. The 125 is 4 oz heaver than the 100, remember, and that can make a difference for many installations (4 oz in the nose is 12 oz in the tail -- so you're talking about a 1 lb difference between what I would call "happy" 100 vs 125 installations).
You should check your calculation. It is just the opposite. 4 oz on the nose is 4/3 oz on the tail. And if you change your battery placement most probably you won't need the extra weight for the tail. So one can say the weight penalty is 4 oz, not 1lb. BTW it seems the advertised (from the chief site) weight difference is 2.5 lbs not 4.

RE: Lanier Yak
I wish I would have mounted a ZDZ 50 on the Patty. It's a lot more powerful than the 40, and I should have not ended adding 12 oz. of weight in the nose to balance. The Lanier Yak will probably fly great with the ZDZ 50 if you shave a pound or so off the total weight. I think the Evolution 58 is about the same weight as the ZDZ 50, with 3.5 more H.P. . 3W 75 cc engines are about 1/2 H.P. less than the Evo, and over a pound heavier. The ZDZ Super 80 is about the same weight as the Evo, have 1 more H.P., but will set you back $825.
Patty can be balanced even with 160 fx on the front. You can use one rudder servo or go for a pull pull or put the battery in the engine box and get rid of the 12 oz. This will change the performance drastically. The evo58 is not the same weight with zdz50 it is about 1 lb heavier. I think it is the better choice for power with 1 lb weight penalty however one should see the flight performances with a both for a sound comparison. BTW do you get 8.5 hp with a tuned pipe? Which prop do you use? My friend have a zdz80 on a comp-arf 2.3 extra and he can not get 8 hp with 26x10 bolly wood and pitts mufflers. If this engine is that powerfull with stock mufflers than it would be a the first choice for all airframes designed for 75-80 cc engines on the market.

RE: Lanier Yak
Sorry to hear that the engine is heavier than advertised. I was really waiting for this engine for some time. What is the bare weight w/o ignition? FYI advertised weight figures for DA50 are right. One of my friends has a ZDZ 80 and it was also heavier than advertised. So you can compare the bare weight of your engine to DA50 also, which is 3lbs bare and 3.2 with stand offs. BME is coming with a 55 which weighs 2.1 lbs bare but unfortunately it will be available by april.

RE: Lanier Yak
With all the servos being used in the Lanier Yak 87" what is the best way to provide servo power and matching to the dual srface servos? Dual receivers with matchboxes? A powerbox and matchboxes? Using just Y connectors to each pair of servos on the different control surfaces? I'm just looking for general feedback based on previous experience with similar set ups.
If you are using Hitec digitals all you need is the programmer. Very easy and straight forward. You won't be adding extra equipments on the plane and you won't be paying for that stuff each time you build a plane.
