RE: New 1100 mAh A123 available everywhere and no word here!
I didn't see too much success with A123 1100's being used at 22 amps continuous. I missed the 300 plus cycles data too. I'll take a deeper look. Sorry to clog the A123 thread, next time I'll start a new post or post in a more appropriate thread.
ORIGINAL: yarom I think you could assume that like everything in this hobby, people tend not to jump in until the product is available, well supported and has been tested by people who took a risk. These Konion are virtually unknown to most people and likely hard to come by.
I've heard about them quite a bit, just because something can be easily purchased at Walmart doesn't make them the best. There seems to be a lot of cells in this size and it is harder to know which are the right ones to buy when looking on US websites. We can get Konion and Saphion to make sure it's the right cell, just seems we have to order from the UK. Bummer, because I'd like something better than A123 in this size.
Yes there are other LiMangan-Cells but like with most things there is #1 / the best and then all the rest. Charles
What do you feel is better about the A123 versus Konion and Saphion2 in the 18650 size? Clearly the A123 in the 2300 version is the best in it's class, but from what I've seen this is not the case in the smaller sized cells.
ORIGINAL: mrasmm well depends on how you do it, if you're talking about the same performance with the extra weight, it might last a bit longer, maybe up to 20% or so, of course depending on what it's in. If you are talking about cutting it down to the same voltage so it draws the same amperage as the 2s lipo, it will last 50% longer.
How do you go from 2s to 3s and cut the voltage down to what the 2s had?

Thanks very much for the thorough response. I will spend some time going over it and see if I can figure things out. I think this will give me a great start. I'm surprised others haven't chimed in. I always thought threads where people express how they would choose to do a setup are alot of fun. Peace, Anthony

RE: Calling all experts to come help equip my plane!
I was looking at what you said and wondering how to find the baseline for the motor? Usually the stats are just maximums right? I would have to have it propped and measure it. I'm trying to figure this out in advance. Is there anyway to do that based on Motor, battery and pack specs? Or do I have to get motocalc?

RE: Changing Xtal
Oh ok, I didn't realize the crystal unit was just as big for the receivers as it is for the Tx. I'm used to the small parkflyer type. I would think that if there was a real concern and a need for these companies to comply with a regulation that they would make the crystal case different for the Tx than they are for the Rx and only sell the Rx version. Don't you see the flaw here? I don't think the government says, "oh, they're going to do it anyway so let's make it easy for people to break the law". It may be illegal, but clearly there isn't much of an attempt at regulation at the crystal swapping level.

RE: Changing Xtal
That's what I thought, however wasn't sure as the way articles and people have described removing the crystal. Certainly on some radios, I know the JR and Hitec, they are easily pulled out without breaking any seal or anything as referred to in your link. And Horizon carries a bunch of them as well as others. I don't think they believe that people are using them to replace the same channel in there receiver. If they wanted us to not change crystals they would make it so that the unit would need to be sent in. Still not sure what those dual crystals are on horizon, any idea? I'm not saying it's right to change crystals or not, I'm simply wanting to learn. However, you can't tell me that JR isn't turning a blind eye in the name of profit and customer convenience, but that's assuming it's even illegal in the first place. I only glanced at that link, but didn't it mention Futaba working with the FCC? Well, why isn't JR held to the same procedures? Clearly the FCC isn't too worried about it.

RE: JR Crystal change-outs
ORIGINAL: mglavin If you have a JR TX with a removable TX module such as a late model 10** series or an 8103 you can change-out the crystal without concern. These newer modules were designed for this feature. Not all of the removeable JR TX modules are capable of doing this, only modules that you can physicaly view the crystal when removed from the TX are capable of this feature... Most of the early JR modules and other equipment had the crystals soldered in place to prevent such shananagins... Other JR products are in the same boat as most other TX manufacture's regarding the need to retune once changing the crystal...
Would the Sport SX600 fall into this category of being able to change them? Not sure if it's considered a module Tx, or if when they say "Module" they mean one that can swap out the whole back and allow 72mhz and 75mhz, synthesized, etc... I've heard the term module used so loosely it's hard to tell for sure. Here's what I mean: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Stores/Products.aspx?StoreBrandId=JRP&CatId=RPX First item looks like a module to me, but what about the crystals are they the module type as well? And why do some of the crystal sets come with 2 pieces, but only one channel is signified? This is confusing as the post quoting the tech says the opposite, that they are all ok to swap as far as JR is concerned, but honestly I take that with a grain of salt. Thanks

Calling all experts to come help equip my plane!
You don't have to be an expert, I'm pretty new to this so the average flier is wiser than I am about the hobby. Some kind RC hobbiests are helping me build an EPS foam trainer. It's going to be full house, but probably leave off rudder control to start. The wings are 42" with a 9" cord. Some dihedral. I'm looking to learn on this and then move my equipment to something smaller, so keep in mind that I don't need the items for this plane to be absolutely ideal as I would like to be about to move them. I'm going to try and attach a pic. I need help matching Motor, prop, batteries, and ESC...and any comments about the chosen equipment are appreciated. Keep in mind this is a very budget conscious project, so if you think a part needs to be upgraded think about only 10 bucks per part to splurge on. Motor with a 10x5 APCE? https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5112 Not sure if the "Blue Wonder" 24g motor could handle this size plane? There's a 1300/1500 and 1700kv version: https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2069 Highly regarded ESC, but what version do I need? 18, 25, 30? https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4312 Do I need a UBEC with 4 servos? Supposedly as good as an HS55. These are for the ailerons and rudder: https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=663 This one for the elevator. Anyone know if this is the right replacement for the HS81MG? It looks like it might be overkill, but that's what I was recommended for the elevator. https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3609 Receiver. Mixed reviews on these which are the same, I believe as Vampower. Most of the parkflier Rx's seem to have mixed reviews, such as the GWS, FMA, and even the Berg. So I figured I'd take a shot on the cheapo: https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3825 I've seen devices such as the ones by FMA that you put in the plane to avoid discharging your lipos too far. Isn't the LVC in the ESC sufficient? As far as chargers, I'm not sure what to do as this is where the budget get's blown. The other area is the Tx, but I think I may be getting a good used deal there. I live in an apartment, so it's harder to have a safe area for Lipo's. I'd really like to go A123, but how small of a plane is feasible on those cells? Since I'll probably have to go Lipo, I need advice there as well. I was told to go 3S 2200 and at minimum 3S 1100. I don't think thos will work out for a smaller plane, but I might just have to do it and sell them when I'm done training. Could I go 2S or 3S with a lower Mah? I'm looking at Hextronic, but not too happy with what I see there concerning safety. Are there any other places that sell a good quality pack that isn't pricey like TP? So for a Lipo charger I'm going to either go CellPro or go cheap like this: http://www.aero-nuts.com/product_info.php?cPath=64_65&products_id=436 I heard that was a balance charger, but it doesn't seem to indicate that. So I would need a blinky or something like this right? https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2057 or... http://www.aero-nuts.com/index.php?cPath=64_66 Ok, I guess that turned out to be alot, but any help is appreciated, especially concerning the Prop, Motor, ESC, and batteries. Thanks so much. If I can sort this out I think it's really cool to have a brushless lipo setup starting from scratch for around 200 bucks. The plane will be almost free due to some generous fellow RC'ers. I just need to buy a CF tube for the fuse. They used a recycled fiberglass rod from an old patio umbrella for the wing spar to save me some dough, every bit helps! They're helping me equip it as well, but it's always good to get some more opinions. Also, any links that show how to do the math for motor ratings, amps, volts, C rating etc...would be helpful. Thanks! Anthony

RE: Multiplex Easy Star, construction, flight report
Thanks my man. I like that you mentioned the Zen factor as that is what I was kinda looking for, something where I can relax and not be on the sticks the whole time, since I'm new and not hardcore hobbyist, this should be a relaxing event for my spare time. If I get into it more I can get a more advanced plane and probably enjoy this one too still for it's different characteristics. With the CG moved can you get it to fly anywhere as close as the Slow Stick? I'd like to be able to fly slowly too.

RE: Multiplex Easy Star, construction, flight report
Thanks much. So the motor isn't noisy at all? Is most of the noise from electrics from the gearbox and props? Can I use a different prop size, I'm assuming larger would be better to further reduce noise in addition to switching to the APC like you recommended. I saw a video or two of the Easy Star and it seemed quite buzzy. I'd need to reduce this quite a bit for myself to be able to fly it, especially hand launching brings it so close to the head. If it's not motor noise at least I won't have to worry about changing that out to an expensive unit, but if pusher props are inherently noiser than I may have to look into the Slow Stick some more, can that one be used direct drive? How noisy is it stock? The videos of it seem quieter, but with video, you never know how sensitve the mic is, if it's mixed differently, etc... -any inisight to the different motor designs that I mentioned and there noise levels, it would help me understand alot more about what I need to look for. thanks Anthony

RE: Multiplex Easy Star, construction, flight report
I saw this reply of yours in another thread and wondered if it applied to the Easy Star as it is an update to the Teddy. "Pretty much depends on your skill level and how much you want to push the plane. My niece has flown her Teddy (basically a powered glider) in 20mph winds, it flies, but it's a lot of work. Biggest thing to remember is to not let it get too far downwind, if it runs out of juice you won't get it back. My nieces Teddy spent 9 months in NJ's Pine Barrens because I let her get it too far out and the batteries quit and I couldn't get it back. " Mike I also thought of a couple more Q's -how slow can it fly as space is at a premium around here, anything close to the low speeds of the Slow Stick? -can anything be mounted such as an airwars system? I'm thinking not because of it being a foamie and weight issues. If not can you dogfight in a traditional manner with the streamers. Dog fighting isn't my number one priority, but it sure looks fun with a buddy. A friend of mine is going to get one too and we think it would be a blast. The Aerobird looks fun for that, but I don't like the idea of everything being proprietary, could become a quick throwaway. Sorry to bug you. I just see that you enjoyed the plane and have a practical approach. Thanks again for your time! Anthony

RE: Multiplex Easy Star, construction, flight report
I'm a newbie and have done a ton of research and pretty much feel this is the one I'll end up getting. I have a couple questions for ya if you have the time. I read through some of the huge 3 part thread, but that gets to be a bit much. I've checked into the T-52, Sky Scooter Pro2, Aerobird, T-Hawk, Graupner, Slow Stick, and many, many more. This one apeals to me the most because of the pusher and most importantly the wind handling ability. I know I should start out with no or extremely low winds, which I will, but once I get that under my belt I'll need a plane that can handle at least 5-10, it is always windy here and if I get a Slow Stick I won't ever be able to enjoy it. So here's a few questions. -I don't need a 3D plane, I'm being realistic, but I also don't want to get bored too fast if I catch on this summer. I heard this plane can do loops, can it do anything else? I've heard it compared to the Graupners, which I think can do rolls, no? The Terry or the Tipsy maybe? Is it more reliable than a Graupner, because they interest me as well. -how are my options motor wise? I probably won't use the stock motor, I have overly sensitive ears and believe it or not electrics are too loud for me too be around. What are my options for a quieter plane. I hear the AXI outrunners are quiet, but I'm unsure if that's because of direct drive, brushless or the outrunner design. I'd like something quiet, but as a newbie I don't see the need to spend big bucks on brushless. I know the brushless need a different ESC or receiver, not sure which, are those parts more than for the brushed motors as well? That could really run up the price. -I also know that not all noise would be from the motor and gearbox (if one is used), is there alot of noise caused by the wind with this plane and would I have options to use a quieter prop with this plane? Does it benefit from folding props? - I see you had some mods. I'm not the handiest, would I have to do those and if so, how tough? I'd probably want to run the 8 cell pack like you said for better wind ability and time, as long as they are compatible with my motor. -if what I have mentioned so far is a possibilty I'd say this plane is for me. My only other concern is that they don't sell seperate parts for repairs. If I really wreck it than I am out another 60 bux instead of a 15 dollar wing like with some other models. Is it easily repairable? Does Graupner sell replacemet parts as they seem to be my second choice. I think they were slightly cheaper for the ARF too. Thanks! Anthony -

Cool video. I'm new to this hobby and looking to get a setup to allow combat once I know what I'm doing. Did you guys have combat systems on the planes or were you trying to knock each other down? Are wings the best for this sort of thing and are they appropriate for a beginner? Did you have to get permision to fly there and what about people below? RE: Please help a newbie, thx!
Thanks guys. I think I'll go with another 3ch. trainer, get used to it and think about adding the airwars later or even do the streamer type of dogfighting possibly. Can most parkflyers handle the weight or have the proper room to add the system? I know the Slow Stick can take some weight, but in general I'm not sure about weight issues. I've heard about guys just trying to knock each other out of the air, wouldn't this be costly? I've heard Zagi's mentioned for this use, but don't know if it's common for other planes as well. Maybe the Zagi or wing type of planes in general are well suited to this, I don't know. If so, are they good to learn on? Flashman, please let us know how the system works. I wouldn't think IR would be a problem outside, but I'm no expert. Do other IR devices like a remote have trouble outside?

RE: Please help a newbie, thx!
Airwars system looks nice, but you don't know the score until after you get home and DL it to your computer, is that correct? The Aerobirds seem like a real fun way to dogfight. The problem I have with it is that you can't upgrade or swap electronics into a different model. If you crash real bad it's toast and you can't salvage parts. Would the 3 ch. Hobbyzone models be too hard to learn on? I'm afraid of that they might me and I'll destroy it. My other thought is to just get a pair of Fighterbirds so I can dogfight with my buds. Are they alot of fun this way or too limiting too fast since they are so easy to fly and can't do loops and rolls and such? Thanks

Not sure about any dealers in the US, maybe you could give them a call and see what they could do. I also bought a smoke system from them at the same time, the idea was to tigger the smoke when you get a kill, the airwars system can handle this but it ould require a large and expensive airplane to do it, and I was worried about mid air's with my planes. I still like the idea so once I've got use to the airwars system on a Zagi I think I'll put in on some warbirds [:D]
Thanks! How do you find it on that site.
ORIGINAL: goofup If you feel you need a Easystar or the like because of constant windy conditions, by all means go ahead and get one. Contrary to popular belief, any plane can be a "first", "beginner", or "trainer" plane. But some are a heck of a lot better than others. You'll also find out for yourself about trying to learn to fly in the wind. Of course it can be done!.... eventually.
I'm not saying I want to fly in the wind right away, I know it may be too tough for a newbie like myself, I just prefer to have the ability so when I get better I don't have to have a new plane. If an easy star is that much tougher to learn on then I'd go with an SS. It's just that from what I'm hearing I'm sure there's more than one viable option for a good beginner unit and the easy star has come up quite a bit among others, just seeking the best route for me.
ORIGINAL: FI_Flashman Hi, I would join a club, they will offer alot of advice and help. My club even has aa 40 sized trainer to learn on, so you don't even have to buy that. I did buy one and would recommend buying one because you can always fly it and know that you can fly it well. If you think that this is the hobby for you then I would buy a good computer radio, it'll save you buying one later on when you've got 4 or 5 models and have to retrim every flight :) I own the airwars system, but have only just put it on some planes (2 Zagi's) will let you know as soon as I've flown with them. It only cost £30 each in the UK and is about the size and weight of a ESC. Hope this helps, if you need anything further please ask. Also, forgot to mention, club sounds like the best way, but like I mentioned the noise level will be too much. Whatever plane I decide to get I will be buying parts to minimize noise. So far I hear the outrunner motors are the quietest. When they say "outrunner" does that refer to any design without a gearbox? I hear alot of mention about AXI, but are all these outrunner types brushless? I'm not totally apposed to brushless, but being a beginner aren't they expensive? Maybe they'll add ebough extra power to the SS to help with the wind, I dunno. I also heard something about sidemounting the motor for better wind handling, but what does this refer to? I also heard about clipping the wings and adding ailerons when I get better, are these easy mods as I'm not always handy and would be looking to buy any mods as pre-made as possible, does anyone sell mod parts for these planes? Thanks
Thanks flashman and everyone else too. Where do you get the airwars system, I can't find a website? When the SS is modified can it handle the wind much better and do rolls? I've seen then loop, but that's about it for acrobatics, I'm not trying to get ahead of myself, but prepare for the future. I'm looking into the Easystar as well, I've heard it handles the wind much better.

RE: Newbie what plane?
ORIGINAL: lift off Slow stick all the way man!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, but I've read plenty of info on the boards and obviously know that the SS is highly recommended, but I have concerns about the wind, as mentioned and need responses dealing with the info in my post.
