RE: improved vibration
Hi Barry, did you run your SPs already? From what I have learned from here and from my own experience I would say the following: - Use fuel with fully synthetic oil, 15% oil and not more. No Castor. - Nitro 10 -15%. - use a bulkhead that is stiff and fixed firmly to the fuselage. Regards Andi

RE: 30% nitro in a RCV120SP???
Hi, yes it will stay together. [:)] And yes, check the tightness of the screws. The oil from the joints is also normal, it will gradually decrease in the course of time as well as the oil from the front bearing (if any). I do believe there is more than 15% oil in Cool Power, right? If you use 15% it will even run smoother. ´ Cheers Andi

RE: improved vibration
Yep those engines are ingenious. [8D] Beside some small electrics I own I will buy only RCVs in the future. Concerning vibrations, have a look at the gassers. There are some models in my Club with gas engines - the whole tail gets blurred when they start hammering.[:D] For my next project I consider to rotate the engine by 45 or 90°, as you did, and to make a hatch as access for the adapter. So its good to know it works without slipping off with the starter. Cheers Andi

RE: improved vibration
I guess what could - could[;)] work is to mount the engine on the firewall, and to have the whole firewall vulkanised into the fuselage. So there would be only little way for movement, but the rubber could take some energy. Do you start your engine with the adapter, from the side? Cheers Andi

RE: improved vibration
Well its hard to tell from the distance, and even harder to compare vibration levels. Here is a pic from the installation of the 120 SP in my Chester Jeep. Its not ideal since the firewall is supported from only 3 sides due to a big hatch. Firewall is 6mm ply glassed to the fuselage. The firewall is sandwiched between motor and the alu backplate. So that works fine, its rigid enough. Cheers Andi

RE: 30% nitro in a RCV120SP???
I would assume higher vibrations and preignition with that high nitro. Nitro enlarges the ignitable range of the fuel - air mixture. If the engine idles with high nitro but does not without, the idle mix screw needs adjustment. In your case it could be too rich. Cheers Andi

RE: improved vibration
Yes, had the same trouble with the muffler.[:)] OS is better, but the pressure nippel tended to unscrew. Now its soldered. Thanks for the input with the flex pipe, I will try that. So the fuel should be fine. Have you tried playing around with the low speed needle? Even if transition and idle is fine, just a small change could be an improvement vibrationwise. I tried several props, also light wooden ones. Made no difference in vibrations, however the idle was a tad smoother. And they have to be balanced, of course. But the best advice, I guess, is to bolt the engine as firm as possible to the firewall to lead the vibrations into the fuselage. Cheers Andi

RE: improved vibration
Hi Glen, do you have an older version of the SP? On the ones sold now they changed the gear, never owned an old version but it seems to make a difference. I run an 120SP now for 3 seasons, and would not say that there is a difference regarding vibrations compared to other fourstrokes. They all shake [:)] What I do believe is a difference is the doubled torque, that tries the engine to distort on the bulkhead. If the screws are not tight enough and the engine gets some play things get rough. I had to reinforce the bulkhead, it really has to be rock solid as any weakness will result in movement and loose screws. Cheers Andi

RE: RCV 91-CD Crankcase Breather Reservoir
Hi John, I use a small tank for the oil exiting the crankcase. Ingoing line stops right after the cap of the tank, the ventilation tube starts in the exact middle of the tank as it is very unlikely that oil collects there for more than a fraction of a second even during aerobatics. Length of ingoing line is about 4 inches, outgoing line has the same length. The tube is a fuel tube, however a slightly thicker one with more inner diameter than the tube used for the carb. I empty this tank after each flight, and never had any troubles. You can connect the crankcase breather with the muffler, did not try that but I guess it will work. In that case there is no need to empty a tank, but more oil will leave the muffler and stick to your plane. regards Andi

RE: RCV 91CD full throttle problem
Hi Chris, I remember one mistake I made when installing the throttle linkage (on the SP series, however): The barrel in the carb has some axial play. When the barrel rotates it moves out and in a few milimeters. A spring inside pushes the barrel outwards. What happend to my engine after throttle linkage installation was that the stiff rod pushed against the barrel axially, against the force of the spring. At certain rpms (in my case at the low end) the barrel vibrated in and out thus changing mixture uncontrollable. If the CD series have the same habit as the SPs and reach max. rpm just before the barrel rotates fully open I believe Walts posting is number 1 solution for your problem. If the problem persists, I suggest to check the throttle linkage [;)] regards Andi

RE: 90sp Vs 120sp for multi blade props
Hi, I run a Biela 18/12 (Standard blade shape) on SP120 during the last season. Prop is extremly stiff, perfectly balanced out of the package, you will be happy with the quality. The blades are broader and thicker than the APC blades. RPMs with APC are slightly higher, and I believe the top speed as well. Have you been satisfied with the Master Airscrew? I found the blades too soft and the tracking of the blades differed about 6mm, the whole thing vibrated and did not perform well. regards Andi

RE: Hudson Flier Project
Since nobody else does it, I will give it a try [:)] 1) I would not expect any troubles in rotating the engine 90°. 2) Guess that will work. Other 4-Strokes have their carbs orientated in any direction and they work fine. 3) OS mufflers will fit. Guess the 120 has the same thread as the OS90. There is some info about that on the RCV homepage. If you build your own - make the exhaust duct as long or longer than the original one. The muffler itself as big or bigger than the one provided and you should be fine. 4) That will be an issue on all glow engines. The middle of the tank should be at the height of the needle. However, there are devices who regulate the fuel pressure for such cases (pumps etc.). But to make this work you need to experiment with your particular situation. I recommend, whenever possible, to bring the tank to the correct height. All our single piston engines vibrate. Since the structure on your pics look rather fragile (by the way: great plane [8D]) make sure it will withstand the hammering. regards Andi

RE: 120sp surging
If your tank is fully enclosed I would suggest to remove air with the syringe and bring in the fuel thereafter. If your tank is visible its easy to fuel it normally, til the fuel reaches the overflow on top. Then remove the small remaining airbubble with the syringe through the overflow. Its essential to remove ALL the air. When you run your engine, and stop it again, some air might enter the bladder through the fuel line from tank to carburator - just to make you aware of this. On the good side you get rid of airbubbles in fuel line. Fuel pressure is more constant throughout the flight. Whatever maneuvres you wil fly - the fuel will reach the carburator. regards Andi

RE: 120sp surging
Yea you are right. Just a guess. The thing is, I was tempted to lean the engine out too much since rpms where low with fully open throttle. You can fill the bubbles tank without a syringe, if set the tubing as shown on the instructions. But you have to make shure that there is no air in the bladder. If you want to avoid this tank - sometimes an unbalanced prop is responsible for vibrations and bubbles. Maybe it also helps to make a somewhat "loose" installation of the tank. Let it move for 2mm and avoid direct touch with the fuselage, and try some foam inbetween, no matter how thin. regards Andi

RE: 120sp surging
Hi, well I dont consider it a problem. When you set the main needle on your RCV with the throttle on the mechanical max. open point and you throttle back, you will see that there is a increase in rpms when the throttle is a few millimeters in direction "closed". Take this point as max open on your linkage. And readjust the main needle, it might be too lean. (It was on mine thats how I found out [:)]) Bubbles are also a reason for a too lean run. One of these things (or both) might be the reason for your hot exhaust. The tettra tank will solve the bubble problem. regards Andi

RE: 120sp surging
Hello, the exhaust of every 4stroke is hot. You need a few mm and cooling between muffler and cowling. The engine does reach max rpm before the throttle is max. open, something I learned here in rcuniverse. See the post "Carburator" below. If that is not the problem and you see bubbles in the fuel line, use a Bubbless or Tettra tank. It has a bladder inside and do not allow air enter the fuel. regards Andi
